Orkney: Romance, Magic and Murder on the Scottish Isles

Rate this book
Lizzie Tulloch drinks, smokes and swears. She is as fierce as the islands themselves. She isn’t going to let her own death stand in the way of love. Or revenge. A naughty book of innuendo and suspense and a lot of strong language used, don’t read if you blush easily. Romance, zest for life, characters you will adore, full of outrageous Scottish humour and plot twists galore. But the true stars are the Isles of Orkney themselves and the rich folk lore.

Nestled away in the North sea are the Isles of Orkney. Home to myths and legends from Picts, Vikings and others who called them home, dating back into ancient times.A dreamy location that can turn unforgiving in an instant, and home to legends and lore not found elsewhere. In the wrath of a storm, there is a murder, the dead seem to walk and creatures roam from the sea. Strange music seems to play in the hills and from the ground itself.

Old stories clash with the modern age in this full novel that combines folk lore, romance, suspense and with wonderful characters and juicy plot twists, this book will be a thrilling read. Mature content and themes.

It has been an absolute pleasure to write this book. Here are the links to the paperback versions.

A real hoot!

How can murder be a hoot? Murder is a serious matter . . . but mix it with a little magic, a little superstition, and a touch of romance in a combination that really becomes a hoot. Loved the characters, loved the location, loved the story line, and especially loved the tale told in a dialect I’ve never practiced before. (Did I tell you that I read in whatever language the story is written in? And, the words sound so much better when I do it this way!) What a great idea to write the story in this manner. Makes me wish I was a Selkie . . . noo Ah must return to me peedie life on me peedie town an this bag island. But you keep reading!

This was a fantastic book! My goal was to read Orkney:: Romance, Magic and Murder on the Scottish Isles within a week, but really it only took me two days. This book by Yaakov C Lui-Hyden pulls you in and won’t really release its talons until long after you have finished reading. This book is abrasive and filled with adult language and themes, but so very enjoyable.

This is one of those books that immerses you in each strand of the story, like the lonely school teacher, or the older couple who have a whole hydroponic grow room in their secret basement. The reader becomes comfortable and familiar with each strand and can easily see the parallels as they live together in this rural coastal area. A little magic, myth, and superstition are the loose loom on which all these strands are held together. Then suddenly all the strands are pulled together in a twisted knot. Your heartbeat races and adrenaline carries you through the next bit.

For anyone who enjoys a touch of supernatural with their mystery and isn’t offended by rough language, I happily recommend this book for its intrigue and masterful weave of the local mythology.

This book captivates you from start to finish. The characters are so relatable that you become a part of the story. Reading this took me to the islands so vividly in my mind! Not only was it entertaining, but it gave me insight and desire to learn more about Orkney and its myths and legends. Perfect blend of mystery, romance, intrigue and horror. This book has a little something for every genre. Awesome insights intro the human psyche, and how easy the descent from normalcy can be. I highly recommend this book

THe romance itself is limited in this book but the magic and murder make up for it. Written as an Orcadian would speak, some might find it a challenge but I thought it lent itself to the supernatural mystic of the story. The auld stories of Norse and Scottish folklore come to life here. Well worth the read!
There were times in this book that I laughed out loud, and then times that I shook my head, thinking..why?! The characters are very relatable. Strong language, sexual content and reference

Magical Realism at its Best!

Orkney is the best piece of magical realism any hands could hold.
It's a heartwarming story of maddening romance struck by the magic and superstitious culture of the Scottish Islands.
It's as many times sweet as wine, embellished with true-to-life characters and palpable humour!
I can't recommend it enough.

Loved how the book was written in their dialect. It brings more character and charm as you read about Lizzie. Enjoyed how they were very up to date in the world but still living in their own world.

I enjoyed several things about this book, the setting, the folklore, and the mystery. Unfortunately, even though I’m no prude, I was bored by the writing about sex, and the attempt to convey the accent of Orkney grated on me. I rushed through the final pages to learn the fate of the main characters.

Fairytale-like murder mystery!

Scottish accented story located in the Orkney Isles! It is funny, charming, sordid, lascivious, violent and wild! Fun to read!
