Search the Word is a six-week study and workbook that takes an in-depth look at how to study the Bible. It is full of instruction, examples, and hands-on workbook pages to help you develop skills like understanding the context of a passage of Scripture, annotating the text, interpreting and applying the Bible to your life, and seeing Christ in all of Scripture. The Bible is the Word of God that He has given us to know and love Him as we grow in godliness; and Search the Word helps give you the tools and confidence to approach Scripture rightly.
One of the best books on studying the Bible! It breaks down a process that seems overwhelming into very small and tangible steps. Even as someone who has read the Bible for over a decade, there were fundamental things I learned that have enriched my daily approach to the text. Would be great for new believers too!
The author described this book in a podcast as "seminary in a workbook" and they weren't lying! This is a workbook of how to intentionally study the bible in the most accessible and biblical way. If you are a Christian, you are a theologian! Get this book and study the Word!
Great Bible study on how to study the Bible! Going through it with some of my junior high and high school girls and watching them learn how to study the Bible is so valuable! Praying they grow in a love for His word they will not depart from!
4.0 - I've done Kay Arthur's Precept Upon Precept a few times (not at my own church) and enjoyed it. When Covid hit, the group stopped meeting in person, and I haven't gone back to PUP study. I've done some of one of Kay Arthur's books in The New Inductive Study Series on my own.
In January I joined two friends from my church to do bible study, and Search the Word was chosen first because it was recommended to one of the friends and would teach us how to study the bible inductively (of course, I was already familiar with that type of study). It's quite thorough. I compiled into a Word document all of the study tips, questions, things to mark in the bible text, etc. that were taught, printed the document, and put it in page protectors to use whenever I study the bible.
I liked a lot of the content! It reminded me to slow down when reading scripture to look for themes, original audience, and Christ before applying it to our current context. Goes through alternative ways to study as well as theological terms. My only complaint is that some days the assignment would take 5 minutes, and others it would be to read and annotate the book of Ruth. I like a more consistent study if it’s going to be laid out in a scheduled manner.
