Rate this book

Frida Kahlo

Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón was a Mexican painter, who has achieved great international popularity. She painted using vibrant colors in a style that was influenced by indigenous cultures of México as well as by European influences that include Realism, Symbolism, and Surrealism. Many of her works are self-portraits that symbolically express her own pain and sexuality.

In 1929 Kahlo married the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera. They shared political views, and he encouraged her artistic endeavors. Although she has long been recognized as an important painter, public awareness of her work has become more widespread since the 1970. Her "Blue" house in Coyoacán, México City is a museum, donated by Diego Rivera upon his death in 1957.

This book centers on the imagiary friend Frida Kahlo had as a small girl. A very interesting glimpse into the mind of a creative child who grew up to become a global icon. Even as a child Frida saw the world in a way that most of us could not understand; she had a mature and centered outlook on the totality of perception - allowing her to see below the surface of existence. Wonderful book for a young child interested in art. The art goes well with the story.

Though the art is occasionally more eerie than some children will be on board with, Foli's creative representation of excerpts from Kahlo's diary is overall a fascinating exploration of imaginary friendship.

I loved this! Delightfully colorful, surreal, and a bit creepy, like so much of the artist's work, this is a little slice-of-life story about young Frida's imaginative play with an invisible friend in a made-up land.

“I don’t remember what she looked like or what color she was, but I do know that she was happy.”

Such a gorgeous glimpse of a recollection from Frida’s childhood where she meets her other self to cope with her challenging experiences.

I am so happy to add this book to my collection. The series of images handcrafted by Gianluca Foli alone is remarkable. They incredibly pair SO SO beautifully with Frida’s story 😭 A masterpiece in its own right. 😍🥰

Do yourself a favor in grab a copy of this book if you love art and your childlike sense of wonder. ❤️ Suitable for all ages!

Lovely short narrative by Frida re: her imaginary friend. The illustrations are a nice play on her artistic style with a slightly creepy-cute quality. Will definitely look for more of the illustrator's works now.

Lovely illustrations to accompany words from Frida Kahlo’s diary. There is a short educational section at the end of the book with some background on Frida & her art.
