Francesca Simon grew up in California and attended both Yale and Oxford Universities, where she specialised in Medieval Studies. How this prepared her to write children’s books she cannot imagine, but it did give her a thorough grounding in alliteration.

She then threw away a lucrative career as a medievalist and worked as a freelance journalist, writing for the Sunday Times, Guardian, Mail on Sunday, Telegraph, and Vogue (US). After her son Joshua was born in 1989, she started writing children’s books full time. One of the UK’s best-selling children’s writers, Francesca has published over 50 books, including the immensely popular HORRID HENRY series, which has now sold over twelve million copies.

Francesca won the Children’s Book of the Year in 2008 at the British Book Awards for Horrid Henry and the Abominable Snowman. HORRID HENRY is published in 24 countries and is also an animated CITV series. She lives in London with her husband, son, and Tibetan Spaniel, Shanti.

This is one of a large series of books, yet I have chosen this story as it is definitely something all children school going age can relate to. In this book, as in all the series, it is about a little boy with quite unpleasant tendencies and ideas who lives with his brother “Perfect Peter” and his Mum and Dad. It tells the rather hilarious story of Henry coming home with head lice and going under the rigorous treatment of his mum attempting to get rid of them, yet Horrid Henry has other plans! After the battle with his mum is won, Nitty Nora Bug Explorer Again comes to the rescue much to Henry’s disappointment, but not before he gets the chance to pass them to all his friends in his own attempt to get rid of them!
This setting is great for children’s perspective on family life as I think we can all relate to the characters whether we were/are considered “horrid” and hence have to deal with living in the shadow of the apparently “perfect” sibling, or of course being the “good” child and having to entertain the antics of your brother or sister less inclined to do what is asked of them. It is amusingly told with fitting illustrations, great for engaging the reader.

A great series of books that can be enjoyed by all ages. This is a perfect series to read to any class. The chapters are short , engaging and the children absolutely love them. They can also be used within Drama where on placement the children liked to act out the scenes as i was reading them each short chapter. This book is particulary one of my favourites. It tells a a very funny story of a little boy who happens to get every parents nightmare a head full of nits . The book also includes some very funny animations. A definite recommend!

Horrid Henry’s Nits, written by Francesca Simon is one of a series of books about the mischief of a boy called Henry gets up to. The book contains four stories. This book is useful for guided reading and encouraging reluctant readers. It is a benefit because it is quicker to finish and therefore can help maintain a child’s attention long enough for them to be excited about reading the whole thing. The ability to complete a novel whilst allowing for a shorter concentration time span can help encourage a child to enjoy reading.
Like the rest of the series, Henry lives with his Mum, Dad and brother, ‘perfect’ Peter.
The first story consists of Horrid Henry having a nit problem and having the worry of the nit-nurse coming to check once again, however he figures out how to solve the problem by transferring them to all his classmates. The second story consists of Henry scamming his brother and classmates in order to get a toy he desperately wants. His deceit however backfires and he gets both a fright and loses the money himself. The third story is about Henry going on a school trip. What initially Henry thought to be an exciting trip turns into a trip to the museum. Nevertheless, Henry still gets up to his usual misbehaviour through swapping various ingredients from other pupils’ lunchboxes until he had the lunchbox he desired as well as breaking exhibits and getting his brother Peter into trouble. The final story is about how Henry ruins His Parent’s dinner party. He exchanges the crisps and nuts for the rotten ones he had made with his new toy. Afterwards he did a noisy and awful show injuring both the dinner guests in the process. As a result of Henry, the meal was ruined. It ends with what Henry desired, getting a pizza takeaway.
It is written from the child’s perspective and can be great for getting children involved in reading as they can relate to one or more aspects or characters in the story. Issues such as nits, sibling rivalry, being sent to bed over are all things children have most likely experienced. The characters all are rather extreme personifications of their names and the stories themselves do not pertain to morality as Henry generally gets away with the trouble he causes. Nevertheless it is a useful series to encourage reluctant readers due to the amusement of Henry and his mischief; it is only in one of the stories that Henry gets any kind of punishment. The way it is written makes it an enjoyable book for all ages, but especially six to 10 year olds.
Horrid Henry books, due to their amusing stories can be great for drama. The short stories enable group discussions and are useful for drama. Children in groups can discuss and then act out the short stories, emphasising the emotions of Henry, his family and classmates. This would be a useful tool to make sure all children understood and enjoyed the ‘Horrid Henry’ series.

Notorious Horrid Henry is always up to his usual tricks and causing mischief. His brother, Perfect Peter, on the other hand keeps himself out of trouble. Henry is very envious of his brother.
A break out of nits broke out at Henry's School. Knowing he was the cause of it, Henry decided to discreetly spread them to his fellow class friends. Scratch, Scratch, Scratch to Mum, Dad and even Perfect Peter. Scratch, scratch, scratch to all the children as well as Miss Battle - Axe.
Later Horrid Henry is yet again up to usual tricks where he starts to make up some of his favourite concoctions, such as Rotten Crispies, Nasty Nuts and Dungeon Drink, only to find that later on Mum and Dad have visitors.

Francesca Simon writes in a naughty, but humorous way. She uses alliteration, repetition and descriptive language. I thought this book was a great easy - read book. I particularly enjoyed the wittiness and mischievousness. The grammar and basic language indicate to me this book would be aimed at year 2/year 3 children.

Honestly, Henry is a child who needs a good hide-spanking, but in his world there is nothing salvageable, therefore you actually end up liking him more than the other characters, since he is the one to whose reactions we can relate. And he is the one who keeps the action going, obviously.

I do not like the parents, who can't do anything aside from admonishing Henry in the same old way, therefore being unfit to raise and give a child proper education.

I do not like Henry's classmates who are almost all as capricious as Henry, but can't be as mischievous (except for Moody Margaret) and then there's that one kid that cries over anything.

I do not like the Town's Museum, which is a waste of space, since it can't offer proper cultural material to its visitors. I can't blame Henry for not wanting to go there, it is certainly a waste of time and memory space.

And I do not like his brother, Perfect Peter, who acts so perfectly sometimes it actually feels imperfect to me, like there is something seriously wrong with him and he lacks personality, seeing as he is an adult-pleaser and he even said he doesn't like ice cream. He needs a doctor right now. Or a mechanic seeing as he must be an AI.

This is one of the books in the Horrid Henry Series, and one of my personal favourites. As with all the other books, it’s about a boy, Henry who lives with his mum and dad and his perfect brother Peter. Henry dislikes Peter simply because he is perfect in every way and receives praised and is recognised for this. Henry, if you haven’t read the books, is quite the opposite. Henry's rather eccentric bad behaviour causes a stir on a regular basis!

This book is about Henry getting nits from school.
This particular story is quite relevant, as most children go through this at least once during their school life!

After going through the treatment of head lice by his mum, Henry hatches a plan of his own in an attempt to get rid of the head lice himself. This plan involves Henry transferring his head lice to all his friends.

Nitty Nora Bug Explorer comes to the rescue in the end.
It’s cleverly written, very amusing and engaging. It also enlightens children about Nits in a roundabout way and how nits can be treated! Some children can isolate children who have nits but this book touches on the very fact that Nits are easily "transferred" through no one's fault!

Me reading this to one of my younger cousin, was delightful. This book was absolutely hilarious and kids would love this series. And, the drawing made it vivid for them as well...
I think the one thing I would say, is that it was full of naughty stuff that some kids might follow the path of Henry's tricks! I would recommend this series to one of age 6+ and they would seriously love it.
And the nicknames are just so, genius to capture the kids mind!

Amazing! In all honestly Francesca Simon and Tony Ross are the best together as teamwork they produce excellent content for young viewer's to read. Horrid Henry is all about a horrid boy who comes up with horrid antics and always ends up doing things he doesn't like. With Tony Ross's illustrations and Word play by Francesca. I honestly can say together they'll make.
