If you are anything like me, you haven't done any traveling in the last year thanks to the pandemic. I've dreamed of places to visit and seeing new things and trying new foods.
Imagine my surprise when I received this book as part of Abrams Dinner Party. Flipping through the pages was like taking a trip to various locations with the colorful images, the mouth watering recipes, and even the drinks that highlighted each country or location.
This book is more than just a cookbook, it is an adventure with the author and her experiences, thoughts about the food, and so much more. I had to chuckle when I read a section where she considered making the book all about chips because she loves them so much.
There are so many different dishes to make from appetizers to main courses. There is also an abundance of adult beverage recipes and I plan to whip out my supplies and create a few of these refreshing cocktails. The author weaves stories about her time in the various locales and her life and why every recipe or location is special to her.
This is definitely a book to savor and imagine yourself in Baja, London, Paris, or even Seattle.
This is the perfect book for easing into cooking for company—and eating and drinking in sunshine on the deck—after a year in isolation. I have marked about 30 recipes and searched online for vintage cocktail glasses worthy of these concoctions. It's cheering me up.
Beautiful photographs, some sloppily written recipes. I only cooked three things from this book, but after struggling with two of them, I'm not planning to make more.
Probably recipe errors or vague instructions don't actually matter when making a lot of the happy hour snacks or cocktails that constitute a majority of the book, so if that's your plan, you likely won't have an issue. However, they're quite frustrating when cooking something with less room for error. One recipe I made, a butter-sauteed fish, was simple enough to be virtually impossible to mess up, and delicious as well. Two others--gougeres and focaccia--had vague or inconsistent instructions or measurements, which matter quite a lot in baking.
A better book to look at than cook from; as a big fan of Renee Erickson (both her restaurants and her other book), I was hugely disappointed.
This book is beautiful with gorgeous photography. I was interested in the recipes but agree with another reviewer that they seem to be missing some information and/or they include ingredients not readily available. This would be hard to recreate recipes if you don’t have access to premium ingredients. Some wonderful worldwide drink recipes included.
I found very few recipes I’d enjoy making or eating. I was also off put by some of the writing that seemed a bit condescending. I don’t eat salmon that often and I prefer wild anyway but there is no need to lecture someone repeatedly about eating farmed.
I love Renee’s restaurants and I love her cookbooks. She makes the food I want to eat, and strikes the tone I aspire to when cooking for myself and others. I learned so much about cocktails! And I cried unashamedly with nostalgia and homesickness when I got to the Seattle section.
Travel the world with cocktails and yummy eats. Prunes with goat cheese and bacon based on those from Leila’s Shop in London are going to be served soon at our house.
I haven't finished with this book yet but love what I've read so far!! I didn't want to hold out on a great review. This would make a wonderful Christmas gift for anyone who loves to cook and travel.
Everything looks delicious, but frankly it's "restaurant food." I wasn't sufficiently stirred to make anything at home in the few weeks I had this from the library.
All the delicious stars to Getaway: Food & Drink to Transport You by Renee Erickson; one of the prettiest cookbooks I have ever seen or read. • This cookbook transports you to six of the authors favourite cities/areas for food: Rome, Paris, Normandy, London, Baja and Seattle. Each section contains short essays, amazing sounding food and drink recipes and gorgeous photos. There is definitely an emphasis on seafood recipes and lots of seasonal/fresh ingredients. • I have missed travelling these past couple of years and this book definitely helped scratch that itch a bit. I can’t wait until summer when I have fresh produce and herbs to try many of these recipes (especially many of the cocktail ones!) • If I ever get a chance to travel to Seattle I will definitely be trying out one of Renee’s restaurants as I would love to try her cooking. Also-the blue page edges literally had me going like this: 😍🥰. • I highly recommend this gorgeous cookbook, it has fun recipes, interesting essays and lovely pictures. A little getaway in a book!
