The Canterbury Press Lent book for 2021 focuses on the significance of the story at the very centre of the crucifixion. Samuel Wells writes as a theologian and pastor to explore the cross in the purposes of God and how this act brings about salvation.Three sections, each with six short chapters, explore the cross the Old Testament (Covenant, Test, Passover, Atonement, Servant, Sacrifice)- the Epistles (Forgiveness, Obedience, Foolishness, Example, Reconciliation, Boast)- the Gospels (Finished, Judged, Betrayed, Pierced, Forsaken, Mocked)Written with characteristic clarity and wearing its considerable learning lightly, A Cross at the Heart of God will give readers a comprehensive understanding of the story at the heart of scripture, the central event in history and a core tenet of the Christian faith.A study guide with questions and prayers makes this ideal for Lent groups as well as individual reading.
Samuel Wells (PhD, University of Durham) is vicar of St. Martin-in-the-Fields Anglican Church at Trafalgar Square in London. He previously served as dean of the chapel and research professor of Christian ethics at Duke University. Wells is the author of several books, including Be Not Afraid, Improvisation: The Drama of Christian Ethics, and Transforming Fate into Destiny: The Theological Ethics of Stanley Hauerwas. He also coedited, with Stanley Hauerwas, The Blackwell Companion to Christian Ethics.
A stunningly challenging book for Lent. However, it has left me constantly mulling the interpretations Sam Wells puts on events and needing to re-read it. I read it whilst struggling through Christ the Heart of Creation by Rowan Williams and I found myself looking again at the love of God, the reality of the Trinity and my whole faith. Tremendous.
While not offering the last word on the cross, this able guide for Lenten study provides an unflinching look at the astounding love revealed as the Holy Trinity has to choose between being with one another or with us and Jesus chooses us.
Wow. Just wow. And reading this alongside Alicia Britt Chole’s 40 Days of Decrease made for some deep and meaningful Lent reading. Beautiful dovetailing.
