A quick disclaimer: M.L. Klasky and I are good friends. We go on writing retreats together to a cabin in the woods and write twice a year (pre-covid). She sparked on the idea for this book during the drive home from one of our retreats. The story is about two authors who go on writing retreats together and one is murdered. Should I be worried? LOL! The initial idea, like all novel ideas, changed as the book was written (I hope!) and doesn't match reality (I hope!).
Regardless of our relationship, I enjoyed this thriller very much. I was on the edge of my seat to find out who is murdered and the ending...unexpected! This is also a new genre for M.L. and I think she nailed it.
This is a very twisted story about two broken and desperate women in a very needy relationship that cumulates into a murder. I thank Librarything for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I received an ARC of The Woman Who Lied in exchange.for an honest review. Psychological thrillers aren't usually my cup of tea, but as I'm a big fan of M.L. Klasky, I figured I'd give it a try. The book kept me turning the pages because I wanted to know the conclusion. I didn't really like any of the characters, though, and I felt like some of the consequences they faced were too harsh. There's also a subplot that doesn't really get resolved. Regardless, if you like thrillers or mysteries, I recommend it!
Mindy Klasky’s latest novel The Woman Who Lied is a departure from her typical paranormal romance style.
It is told primarily from the perspectives of the two protagonists Jess and Rachel (That is until one of them turns up dead after a writing retreat). Klasky develops suspense from the first chapter as the reader is provided with the description of an unknown female corpse.
The story draws you in as we meet aspiring author Jess and successful author Rachel and see how their relationship as mentor/mentee forms. As the story unfolds towards its bloody conclusion, we learn both women harbour long buried secrets and aren’t all they appear on the surface. It is interesting knowing one of these women will not survive the story and questioning which one you want to live. The secondary characters are filled with dimension as well. Klasky keeps the reader engaged through to the end and the killer’s identity is revealed. There are also some nods to her background as a romance writer throughout.
A book I would recommend if you like mysteries. Aside from the suspense, it gives insight to the writing process and publishing world which I found interesting as someone who has aspired to be a writer.
It is a well-done genre change, not unlike JK Rowling and her Cormoran Strike crime novels written under the name Robert Galbraith. If I have one complaint, it is that the story’s ending felt a little abrupt, and I wanted more. That being said, while this book may not by the jumping off point for a series, but I hope Klasky continues to write more novels in this genre
This is a story that is labelled as psycho thriller. The first half of the book deals mainly with the writing retreats of two very different writers where one has engineered the mentoring relationship. I found Rachel, the main character, very unappealing- self centered and unaware of what is happening for other people. She is very judgmental of Jess’s writing subject and sexual behavior. The second half is a ‘who dunnit’ to solve the murder and every character is considered as a possible murderer, bit like a Poirot reveal in an Agatha Christie novel. There are some chapters where BDSM sexual activity is described but these are essential parts of the plot and character development. An easy read, interesting enough to keep you wanting to just finish a few more pages but the end seemed to fizzle out compared to the energy at the start. I downloaded this book as an ARC in order to review it.
Okay. Let me start off by saying I did enjoy this book. I don’t want it misconstrued in the remainder of this review. The plot lines follows two authors (interesting), one who is successful in the big scheme of things and one who rights “underground” (think Wattpad but dirtier). Jess, one of the two main characters, is very intriguing from the beginning and her strangeness leads to a pretty good character. However, Rachel on the other hand, is not my favorite character. She feels incomplete. Also cannot stand Maddy. And not because she’s such a good character but completely the opposite. She is a nuisance to the story and irritated me the entire time. I will also say the sub plot goes COMPLETELY unresolved. Abruptly at that. There are quite a few “extras” that just clutter up the storyline. With all that said, the ending is a little bit of a twist. So that made up for some frustration. I appreciate a thriller with the main characters not being FBI or Cops so that’s another bonus.
I love a good who thriller and this one ticks all the boxes, characters you are drawn to but know there are secrets hidden within them, a slow build up to the main event that has you wondering what exactly will happen, twists you don't see coming and not knowing who the real culprit it right up until it is finally revealed! This is the first book in a genre quiet different to the authors other books and it was an absolute pager turner right up until the end and can't wait to read more!!!!
Wow! Just wow! I've always enjoyed Mindy's books, and this one is no exception. It's such a different genre for her and so unexpected. Rather dark and twisty. I thought I had it figured out, but no, she threw in more twists. Kept me in anticipation and I had a hard time putting it down. Cannot say more as I don't want to give anything away. I enthusiastically recommend this book!
I was hooked from the first paragraph! A different genre than I’m used to with this author, but she hit it out of the park! I was guessing right until the last page! I loved this book and hope she writes more in this genre!
This story was great! I had no idea how the ending would be! I thought I 'might' of had it figured out, boy I was so wrong!!!! An excellent mystery story!!! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. I will look for more from this author.
Found it a bit confusing the way it jumped backwards and forward, but kept going. Thought I had kind of worked out who the culprit was, then there was another twist, and another. Intrrrsting.
I'm not going to lie, this book was difficult to read. That being said, it was beautifully written and kept bringing me back to see where it was going. I was actually so interested in the mystery that I read the majority of it while standing in lines at Walt Disney World this past week!
The story follows two authors who are unknowingly using each other to advance their own careers. Jess Fox is a young author looking to become a best-seller while RJ Hanley is a well known author suffering from medical issues that have given her a major case of writer's block. They are both looking to help themselves but end up creating a huge mess of their relationships with those around them.
Please be warned before reading this that there are a lot of triggers and some scenes can be difficult to read. One chapter in particular was extremely difficult for me to read and I had to put it down several times but it was so well done that I couldn't help myself to keep picking it back up after only a few minutes.
