Meet Ellie in this first installment of the Magical Mane Mystery Series!
Stella Bixby is a native Coloradan who loves to snowboard, pluck at the guitar, and play board games with her family. She was once a volunteer firefighter and a park ranger, but now spends most of her time making up stories and trying to figure out what to cook for dinner.
As Ellie Vanderwick headed toward Cliff Haven, Iowa, in her VW Microbus, Mona, with her pet pig, Penelope by her side, she wondered if the grandmother she'd never met would be still alive. The letter she'd received had taken awhile to arrive, but as Ellie had always thought herself completely alone in the world (apart from Penelope and Mona) she was surprised to hear she had a grandmother. Ellie's arrival in Cliff Haven saw her the new owner of a beautiful big home, and yes, unfortunately her grandmother had died. It wasn't long after she'd arrived that Ellie discovered a dead body in the corn field she now owned. Horrified, she called 911 which saw the police on scene pretty quickly.
Ellie had a problem with her hair in that it changed colour depending on her moods. She tried to keep it covered so no one would notice, but the chaos that descended on Cliff Haven caused major hair issues. It was when some of the townsfolk decided Ellie was the murderer that her determination to solve the mystery came alive. But could she do it? There was so much happening in the town, she wondered what she'd let herself in for...
Downward Death is the 1st in the Magical Mane Mystery series by Stella Bixby and it was lots of fun. I really enjoyed the plotline, the characters - Ellie and Penelope were great - and the whole set up! I'll be looking at book 2 asap. Highly recommended.
I loved Stella Bixby's Reilly Cooper series....so when I finished the latest book in the series I decided to give this one a try.....and I'm not disappointed. I love all the characters and can't wait to read more.
Downward Death Magical Mane Mystery, Book #1 Stella Bixby 5 Stars

Meet Ellie in this first installment of the Magical Mane Mystery Series! (Goodreads)
Review:
The characters are well rounded and well developed. Ellie has had a hard life but she is a survivor and she is getting by. She has her pet pig, Penelope and her VW Microbus, Mona. When she inherits a farm from her grandmother, whom she has never met, things are beginning to look up. Until she finds a dead body in a field on the farm and she becomes a suspect. Now she has to figure out the murderer before she gets put away for life.
The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story from the very beginning. I liked the way that Ellie’s hair changed colors and textures depending on her mood, it lent a bit of paranormal to this book. The mystery was well plotted and had enough suspects to consider and clues to sift through.
This book was pleasantly different from the other cozies that I read. I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys a well crafted cozy. I am looking forward to reading more about Ellie’s adventures.
The cute title and cover art caught my eye and I was sold when I read the blurb! Stella Bixby has created a very unique heroine in Ellie Vanderwick whose hair magically changes color and texture along with her emotions. Unfortunately, this power has been more of a curse than a blessing to Ellie and she feels she must keep it a secret at all costs. When she learns that a grandmother she never knew has died and left a farm in Iowa to her, Ellie heads straight there, hoping to learn more about her family and why her hair misbehaves the way it does!
I don't think I've ever read a book set in Iowa before and I really enjoyed that aspect of Downward Death! Cliff Haven is a small community full of an interesting variety of characters--some who immediately take Ellie under their wing and others who'd like to see the backside of her. Ellie, along with her very animated pet pig, Penelope (love her!), are starting to feel at home when the unthinkable happens--a dead body is found in the Vanderwick cornfield! Although Ellie didn't even know the victim, she's immediately suspected and ostracized by some residents. What's a girl to do but seek out the truth herself so that she can clear her name?
There were some great twists and turns in this story and I applaud the author for making this mystery very unpredictable! As the body count added up, I wasn't sure who Ellie could trust or who the bad guy (or girl) was. The suspenseful, last few chapters of this book had me biting my fingernails and sitting on the edge of my seat! I'm excited to read more of this series and see what happens to Ellie (and Penelope!) next. And I can't wait to find out more about Ellie's family--Is her mother still alive and why did she abandon her baby? Who's her father? And what the heck is going on with her hair? I have to find out the answers to these questions and more, so I've already pre-ordered Book 2!
Easy to digest cozy mystery taking place in the cornfields of Iowa. Rolling-stone Ellie is gifted a farm from family she’s never met. Soon, she needs to save the neighboring farms from a developer in this new town that doesn’t yet accept her into their fold. There’s a potential love triangle that never gets off the ground. All the while, Ellie and her pig Penelope finally found the family they’ve been missing from the neighbors.
I look forward to the next book, though it seems her career is irrelevant to the story progression thus far. I look forward to seeing if any of the hints at paranormal renderings come to fruition.

Downward Death is first in the Magical Mane series, which mixes cozy mystery with a hint of paranormal.
Ellie finds out she had inherited a farm from a grandmother she never knew. So she packs up her van Mona and heads to Cliff Haven, Iowa. When she arrives some locals are less than friendly and when one of her neighbours ends up dead in her corn field Ellie is suspect number one. She decides to try and get to the bottom of things, with the help of her pet pig Penelope.
I loved Ellie's magical hair. It gave the story an element of fun without overdoing the supernatural element. I don't know how many times I've thought to myself that my hair has a mind of its own, yes, okay mine doesn't turn from white to bright red when I'm angry but you get what I mean.
Ellie was a likable character. Moved around foster care after she was abandoned as a baby, she often got into trouble due to her changing hair. She's the kind of character you just want to be happy, and I hope she finds it in Cliff Haven. She did, however, give up a bit too easily on occasion, which for a determined amateur detective was a bit of a worry.
The mystery was a bit of a head scratcher, and I didn't have the culprit entirely pegged down until near the end.
As this is the first in the series, there was a lot of getting to know the characters, which slowed the pace a little, but that's to be expected.
Downward Death is a solid start to this series and an enjoyable read that I'd recommend for any cozy mystery lovers out there.
I absolutely loved this book. I have actually re-read it three times already just because it works so well as a tonic for current stresses. This got me through a PICU stay, many ER trips, and more than a few drs appts in the last couple of weeks. Despite serious subject matters it is light in tone, has quite a few laugh out loud moments of humor, and is really the first thing to spark my interest in quite a while. I am deeply appreciative, and now have found a new author that I must read more from! THANK YOU.
Another fun series by Stella Bixby. Love Ellie, her changing hair color, and Penelope! Great new cast of characters and a town I’d like to know more about. I’m hoping Ellie gets the answers she’s looking for. I know I can’t wait to find out!!
I received an ARC of Downward Death by Stella Bixby, below is my review and as always the opinions are mine!
Ellie Vanderwick is a bit of a loner. She was raised in foster homes and has lived off and on in her converted VW Bus since she was 17. Her dream is to help people to be pain-free and more flexible through yoga. This story begins with Ellie being bequeathed a farm in Iowa courtesy of the grandmother she never knew. So far so good right? Ellie will be the outsider coming to a new town. We've all read that before right?
But wait! Ellie has a secret, her hair is a mood ring. Yes, it changes color and texture based on her mood and feelings. I thought this was a unique and fun way to add a little magic to a fairly standard cozy. She also has a pet pig as her cozy companion!
At the beginning of the book, there is some major corn confusion that made me say out loud-- "Is anyone going to tell her?" I don't know if I got it because I am a Midwesterner or if it's common knowledge. (you'll have to read to know what I am talking about, I don't want to spoil you).
Within the first three chapters of this book, I was already invested in Ellie V's life. I wanted good things for her and her Penelope, and I was ready to fight a couple people in the town on her behalf and hug others. Stella Bixby has done a wonderful job in this book of really pulling the reader into the story. The mysteries of Ellie's hair, who her parents were, and how will Ellie support herself were enough to keep me turning the pages, even before the murder occurred.
I read the second half of Downward Death in one sitting, The mystery keeps you guessing and you aren't sure which of these characters is terrible enough to be a killer. As I have said before, I prefer it when a cozy mystery killer is just an awful person motivated by...well I better not say this killer's motivation- that might help you guess who done it!
When the book ends, some of the mystery of Ellie's background is solved, but much of who she is is left as an overarching mystery for future books. I really enjoyed this series and can't wait to read the next book. I am hoping that Ellie's mother is alive and well and will show up in a future book! I also hope Katie & Earl's daughter features in a future story!
Quick, fun read with a quite a few mysteries to be solved.
Ellie Vanderwick goes to Cliff Haven Iowa to claim an inheritance from her deceased grandmother Esme who she never met. She and her pet piglet Penelope (say that 3 times fast, lol) are almost immediately the center of attention in the small town, both for their long-anticipated arrival and a recent murder on her grandmother's land. As she gets to know the townsfolk and clear her name, she tries her best to keep her most quirky feature literally under wraps...her colorful and psychic mane - kinda wish I had hair like that 😁 She makes friends and some enemies, whilst sleuthing to uncover the murderer and find her long-lost mother. Can't wait to see what she uncovers in the future!!
I really enjoyed this book and devoured it in a day. I can't wait to find out more about Ellie and the Vanderwicks and this hair. Definitely look forward to continuing the series.
Ellie Vanderwick is just a normal girl who mainly lives in her van. Except she has a pet pig, and her hair does weird things. Like change color when she gets emotional, or mad. It also tends to warn her if something is fixing to happen to her. She is leaving her boyfriend to move on in her search to find her family, when she receives a letter from her unknown grandmother letting her know she has a home if she wants one.
Good characterization, quirky characters, a nice plotline, and a few twists to keep you guessing.
This is a decent first story in a series that while I did find entertaining, I will definitely need to read at least one more to see if it is one that I'd like to continue with.
Aw man, I really enjoyed the novella based on this story, but the first instalment fell so flat for me.
First of all, I despised the main character. I often love reading about women that are different from me, but I couldn’t stand Ellie. Maybe some information about her is missing, but I just couldn’t understand why she insisted on sleeping in a van when she just got a beautiful house with stunning rooms and huge beds. Also, it’s not clear why she has no money at all, what kind of life was she leading? We are told she’s moving out after her boyfriend found out about her hair, but was she not working at the time? Why is she so poor? Did the grandma leave her nothing at all?
We know that one of her issues is that she never met her mother and is hoping to find her father in the small town. So when she meets Jake, who is either an officer or detective, and sees that they have the same eye colour, she thinks maybe he is her father and like, come on that is the most far fetched thing! Eye colour?? One of the most variable things there are??? Could've been the shape of the nose or a chin dimple or literally so many other things. And later he goes into the restaurant she works for and she says "I wrote both orders down and made my way to the kitchen. First, we had the same eyes, and now we both like the crunchy bits on the pancakes?" Oh my god that is really not an inheritable trait what the fuck? Who doesn't like he crunchy bits on the pancakes???
But then he mentions how he didn’t know her mum, so we, the readers, should be a little disappointed. But alas, Ellie sees something in his expression, so we are left wondering if he maybe lied. This is something that should keep us hooked and want to continue, if only there wasn’t a stupid character list at the start that described Jake as her mother’s high school sweetheart like MAN COME ON! You just gave it away, at this point just write who the murderer is so every bit of intrigue in the book is gone.
But maybe I could’ve pushed through if it wasn’t for how they HAD to introduce the hit guy’s girlfriend as irrationally catty and jealous and crazy. I had to dnf this book because it was so grating, I don’t get what people see that I don’t but I hate when in books they create a woman whose only purpose is to be bitchy, jealous and a slut like come on this is so 2000, we are so past that.
In the hope that I won’t have to ever read about a girl being considered a slut just cause she dresses up nice all the time, I give up on this book.
This one had me completely breathless! PERFECTION in every way!

When Ellie inherits her grandmother’s farm in Cliff Haven Iowa, she expects to find farmland, quaint friendly residents and a warm welcoming atmosphere. What she didn’t expect was to be greeted with mistrust … but then she also didn’t expect to find a body in her cornfield … or to be suspected of putting it there! Oh Ellie, it looks like wild, unruly, color changing hair isn’t your biggest problem after all! Aided by yoga, an adorably charming piglet and fate, Ellie must pull out every trick … plus a few she didn’t know she had … if she’s going to outwit the nefarious in “Downward Death”, a truly engaging and enthralling mystery thriller! This plot is LOADED! I lost count of the times I had a “wait, WHAT!!!” moment as a nugget was revealed that I didn’t see coming, AND each and every nugget enticed me deeper and deeper into the world of Ellie and these fabulously drawn and developed characters! Their world became so completely real to me, the characters so human as I found myself beginning to identify with some, sympathize with others, and with a few, feeling a rage that was palatable, so palatable I actually had to pause so I could get a grip on my emotions! I won’t be going into plot details - I don’t want to spoil any of these absolutely perfectly plotted surprises for future listeners, but suffice to say that when added to the whole, and combined with the author’s flair ongoing character development, the result is truly stunning and makes for a cohesive, truly captivating and enthralling story! What makes the total effect even more astounding is the narration! One word - PERFECTION! The timing, the voicing choices, the emotion, EVERYTHING is perfect, truly bringing the story, the authors VISION to brilliant, beautiful LIFE! I LOVED it, I loved everything about this truly wonderful production. Five fantastic stars!
This is the first book I've read by this author, but it won't be the last! It was an entertaining book with a wild mystery and many dead or injured bodies! Ellie's family history still has a lot for her to unravel but she got a good start on it. Many of the characters were wonderful and some of them were not - but it took a while to sort them out. Penelope the little pig was delightful and very smart. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
Amazon synopsis: Ellie Vanderwick has hair-raising problems, and we're not just talking about her unruly locks! Yoga may ease the tension, but when it comes to dead bodies, she needs more than just a downward dog.
Her life may seem imperfect without friends, family, or a stable job, but she's got her trusty VW Microbus named Mona and her loyal piggy companion, Penelope. Unfortunately, her hair is a different story. It's like magic, but not the kind she likes! Her hair can go berserk at any moment, transforming into curls, bright purple, or even limp strands.
But when Ellie inherits a farm from her late grandmother, she knows it's time to tame the wild strands and uncover the secrets of her past, including why her mother left her at a fire station years ago.
Cliff Haven, Iowa, is a quaint and friendly town, but Ellie's arrival brings more than just her wild hair. When a dead body turns up in her cornfield, the town starts pointing fingers, suspecting Ellie is the culprit. Can she solve the mystery and clear her name before it's too late?
Join Ellie on this magical journey in the first book of the "Magical Mane Mystery" series. Will she untangle the clues, or will her big hairy secret come out? One thing's for sure; you'll be rooting for Ellie from start to finish!
I loved this author's Reilly Cooper series and thought I would give this one who too. It is a very different type of book but still entertaining, although I didn't love it as much. The supernatural aspect is very subtly done with no spell casting from the young witch(?) Instead her hair changes to show her emotions and a possible healing touch, not sure about that as it was never explored. This made it interesting, especially as she has to hide her secret but not sure what it means. The main case does get solved but there are a lot of mystery surrounding her family background, which I think is going to be revealed as the series unfolds. I did know who the killer was but that was mainly because I wanted a better out come for Ellie. I loved her pig, Penelope, who I think could have solved the case on her own. The rest of the characters were likeable and I look forward to jumping into the next mystery. A letter from her grandmother informing her she is the soul heir to her farm , comes at the perfect time for Ellie. Sad about the passing of a grandmother she never knew, having grown up in the foster system, Ellie is excited to see what small town living is like. However the first night there she stumbles over a dead man in her corn field and in the process becomes a possible suspect. Ellie will have to uncover the secret behind the death, while trying to keep her own. However she turns out to be a lot a like the grandmother she never knew and the town's people either love her or hate her. Can she find the killer and make the town and her grandmother's farm her own? Or will she have to runaway again?

I was surprised with who the murderer was. I hope there is more to come. 5*.
BOOK REPORT At some point earlier this year, I downloaded a bunch of paranormal cozies for free, knowing there would be times when I wanted to ingest some brain fluff for whatever reason.
Today’s reason was wanting to be able to read and watch The Egg Bowl at the same time. The score of which at halftime, as I write this, has Ole Miss leading Mississippi State by an unsettlingly (if you’re Lane Kiffin) close three points. As I told my husband, I don’t really have a dog in this hunt—I’m just cheering for good football today. I also told him that I find it quite odd to be watching a State game without hearing any cowbell. Because you know……
You always need more cowbell.
Oh, the book!
It was big fun. I loved the hair having a mind of its own, and the pet pig with ESP (or, as my cousin Ruthie refers to it when we text/call each other at the same time, ESPN). Liked the supporting characters, liked the setting, mostly liked the main character. Enough so that I seriously considered signing up for a Kindle Unlimited trial offer and getting a few months of such cozies for free…..
Which I probably will do come January and the rainy/cold/non-social season. Just too much going on right now to give into a binge on these sweet little things.
Ellie lives in Mona. That's right, IN Mona. Mona being her VW van. But she's not complaining. She's happy, she loves helping people feel better with her yoga. She and her pet pig Penelope are doing just fine.
When Ellie finds out about an inheritance, there's nothing holding her back, and off she goes to find out all about this long lost grandmother. Except she finds a body instead. A dead body in her cornfield!
Bixby never disappoints and this new series - Magical Mane Mysteries - is no exception. Lots of engaging characters. A few baddies - of course, what would a whodunnit be without them? And more twists and turns than a roller coaster, it kept me on the edge of my seat and made sure I read this in ONE SITTING. It totally threw me for a loop when the real culprit was unveiled!
Great start to a new series, I am really looking forward to the next Ellie Escapade! I highly recommend!
[I was fortunate to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of the book from the author, with no obligation to review. The opinions expressed herein are given freely and are entirely my own.]
About all Ellie has going for her is her pet pig, Penelope, and her VW bus, Mona. She's between jobs and on the verge of living out of Mona again when she receives a letter from a grandmother she never knew. Esme has died, leaving her farm in Iowa to Ellie. With no other choice, Ellie travels to Cliff Haven. It's a delightful small town, and Ellie hopes to make a fresh new start. However, when a dead man is found in her cornfield everyone suspects Ellie, the newcomer, of committing the crime. Ellie is determined to clear her name. If only she can keep her hair under control.
This was a fun story, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. But...(Spoilers!!) why did so many people act so suspiciously and/or foolishly? One murder would have been plenty for a small farming community, but by the time all was said and done several people had been murdered. Why did one character take the fall for another? How was Ellie so utterly duped by multiple characters? What I liked most were the characterizations, the fact that the love interest isn't in law enforcement, Ellie's tenacity, and the quick pace.
The story had plenty of drawbacks, but I found it entertaining. Four stars.

Charming first book in the Magical Mane Mystery Series.
I really enjoyed Downward Death by Stella Bixby. The protagonist has hair that changes colors as her moods change and quite a bit of naivety, considering she had been on her own for years. She owns a pet pig named Penelope, who seems to have a bit of magic herself. The other characters in the small town of Cliff Haven, Iowa were interesting and the small town atmosphere was about what you would expect. The author’s writing style was quick and easy to read and the plot was interesting enough to keep your attention. I will admit, that towards the end of the story, it felt like the author was throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the reader and taking the easy way out. That’s the difference between my 4 star review and what could have been a 5 star review. I still enjoyed reading this book immensely, and would read another book in the series.
Thank you to Stella Bixby for the opportunity to read and review this 4 star book.
It's a wonderful book. I loved it. Ellie Vanderwick gets a letter from her deceased grandmother Esme who leaves behind a big house in Cliff Haven, Iowa. Ellie comes back to her hometown to claim her inheritance and meets Ty who is the caretaker of the house. She takes a waitressing job at Katie's cafe. One day, she comes across the dead body of Percy, Ty's uncle. Ellie calls the police. She is stunned to find Detective Jake's resemblance to her. Sally, Ty's girlfriend, is jealous of Ellie and blames her for the murder. Ellie decides to investigate the case to clear her name. Suspicion falls on Percy's wife Helen who gets murdered later along with PJ, Percy's illegitimate son. Ellie, guided by her intuition as well as her Pet pig's feelings discovers Sally holding Ty's parents as hostages and about to murder them. Ellie foils her attempt and gets her arrested. However, Ellie visits her grandmother's home, where she gets some startling revelation. Would she nab the culprit? It's a must read for cozy mystery lovers.
Our MC Ellie Vanderwick, is an orphan raised in foster care, with wild, magical, mood changing hair. At the start of the book, she has just discovered that she's inherited a farm in Iowa from a Grandmother she has never met. Ellie arrives in town with Penelope, her sweet piggy companion, and everyone comments on her similarities to her Mother and Grandmother. The next morning, Ellie finds a body in her cornfield and she sets about trying to find the killer.
I really enjoyed this. Ellie seems smart, about all things other than reading the documents she's given from her Grandmother, and her pig is an utter delight. There isn't magic in this book per se, it's more her wild, color changing hair and that people think she has other abilities (no spoilers).
Excellent, and fun cozy mystery and while I thought I knew who did it right away, I changed my mind multiple times throughout the book. Definitely recommend for fans of animal sidekicks, cozy mysteries and a little magic.
Ellie’s hair acts like a mood ring; it changes colour and texture depending on her feelings. It’s also the reason Ellie and her pet pig Penelope keep on the move. When Ellie suddenly gets a notification in the mail, telling her that the grandmother she never knew existed had died, and that Ellie had inherited her farm, she knows that finally she has found a place to call home! Unfortunately, home comes with its own set of problems, including a body in Ellie’s cornfield…
A fun paranormal cosy, in which the paranormal part is fairly light. The main character, Ellie, is intriguing, with a history we’ve only just begun to uncover. The supporting cast are just as interesting, especially the lovely Penelope! An enjoyable, quirky, paranormal cosy mystery for mystery lovers.
This was my first Stella Bixby's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Magical Mane Mystery Series, a magical cozy mystery! I liked it! The characters are well developed, and interesting. Ellie is such a wonderful character, strong, smart, caring, and sunshine. She has a cute pig named Penelope. The plot is well crafted, entertaining, and intriguing, filled with humor, intrigue, murders, and twists and turns. The cast of supporting characters is impressive. I liked the small town vibes. I loved to follow Ellie is her investigation. Shannon Nicole Locke did an excellent job bringing this story to life. She has a beautiful voice, and a great range of voices (impressive). I enjoyed it, and I highly recommend it. Looking forward to listening to Bowling Blunder, the next book in the series.
If Hallmark wrote or sponsored paranormal murder mystery books, this would be one of them. Stella did a wonderful job. Honestly, Hallmark should contact Stella and get it produced for TV.
Overall, if you’re looking for a cleanly written, “who-did-it” type mystery, with a bit of humor, some relationship drama, witchy vibes, small town/farm living and an adorable pig for a best friend... I believe you found the perfect book!
I love a good book that keeps me on edge but also gives me a laugh. I also liked not being able to guess who did what. I didn’t feel like there was a cliffhanger and it was set up for a second book. If it’s anything like this one, definitely worth a read!
*I was given an Advanced Reader Copy complimentary in exchange for an honest review*
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review.
Ellie inherits her unknown grandmother’s farm and moves to Iowa in her van, Mona. What I liked: I loved Ellie’s magical hair that both provides premonitions and acts as a kind of mood ring (should be helpful to future love interests). Her pig Penelope is delightful and does appear in the story quite a bit which I enjoy. The plot does have several fun twists, making it a guessing game. I also enjoyed the hanging mystery around her father.
What I didn’t like: The pace slowed in the middle which does tend to plague authors Overall, this was quite an entertaining book and will definitely be reading the next in this series.
I grabbed this book as a part of the Romance Bookworms highlighting various free books. I don't love the cover but it was actually a pretty fun book. Told in the first person, we learn about Elle Vanderwick. She doesn't know much about her family but she is ecstatic to learn about her grandmother. Too bad she died right before Elle gets into town. It seems that she might have been able to tell Elle a bit more about herself, including who her father was and why her hair changes with her emotions. She also might have been able to tell Elle more about the man who is dead in her cornfield. This book follows some familiar beats but I enjoyed the way Bixby subverted the usual love triangle between Elle's ex and the handsome man who used to help her grandmother around the house.
Okay, so I need hair like Ellie's, I need a Mona but instead I have a moaner (me) and I would love a Penelope but I'm happy to be satisfied with my two giggly pigs and other animals.
At first I was worried this was going to be a twee, sugar-coated story, but there was blood and guts - not necessarily guts but definitely blood- a tale of homecoming, a tale of many murders most foul and a house I would love to live in...with a Stannah to take me round all the rooms as I'm disabled 😁
I am very much pleased I read this as it took me away from day to day dramas, was well written and some fabulous characters. I am definitely looking forward to the next one in the series.
A new series that is totally fun to read. Who was Ellie’s mother and grandmother? She did not know either of them, yet her grandmother finally found out about her and left her the farm. Were there secrets Ellie had to uncover about the farm? Several mysteries emerged from the story. Was Ellie’s mother alive? Who was Ellie’s father? Is Ellie a witch? Several mysteries will be revealed in later books and I cannot wait to read them. Love the hair color changes, it is fun to read about. Penelope the pig steals the show throughout the story. Plus, Mona the van almost seems alive. Highly recommend to all mystery lovers.
