What do you get when you cross a snarky vampire, feral werewolf, and an Aztec god?

Two years have passed since John the vampire did the impossible and returned from the edge of oblivion, and he didn’t even get a novelty t-shirt for his troubles. You know the ones: I went to Sheol and all I got was this stupid shirt. Now, our “hero”, Warden Broadway, and Ludvig the Hunter are finally ready to carry out their mission of eliminating all warlocks on Earth—which was tasked to them by Hecate herself.

Locke descends into the political nightmare that is the High Council and discovers there is more than meets the eye with the Elders. What could possibly be more important than preventing the apocalypse?!

Depweg takes a much needed vacay in Faerie where he learns to be at peace with the raging monster inside his mind. That is until his R&R is cut short by new orders that’ll send him into a warzone. Neat!

And most importantly, John continues his quest of replacing his prized collection of Battlefield Earth cups.

“Those Wonderful Toys” returns to the fast paced, oftentimes comical style of action that makes John the lovable anti-hero that he is. Cake and puppies for all*.

* The cake is a lie, and you can rescue your own Lilith-damn puppy.

My name is Hunter, and I’m a wordaholic. I’m also about to break the fourth wall…of your mindhole. Because there is a true story behind this…well…story.

It begins with two best friends who grew up together, breaking rules and raising hell as they shaped each other’s personalities into the shameless assholes they are today. Well, at least for one of them, but I’ll get to that in a moment. These two boys—let’s call them Hunter and John—were all but inseparable. John excelled at creating music powerful enough to make angels weep and being the funniest asshole in Texas while Hunter dabbled—poorly, I might add—in his humble writings. Because they were self-declared brothers from other mothers, John respected Hunter’s humble writings as much as I—I mean Hunter (stupid third person perspective)—respected John’s musical magic. John’s tunes could have changed the world, one day…

One fine day, after reading one of Hunter’s horrifically detailed short stories about a serial killer, John asked Hunter to write a story about him.

“Hell yeah, dude! What do you want to be?” Hunter asked, brimming with honor and biting back a very manly squee.

“A vampire,” John responded with a mischievous gleam in his eye. “But not one of those sparkly ones. A true bad ass!”

“Done!” Hunter crowed with a smile and an accompanying high five.

“No, dude. Promise. Promise you’ll write and finish a book about me. You are the most prolific writer of our generation!” John said. (Something like that. I might be paraphrasing a little, but you get the gist of it). “I would consider it an honor to live on for eternity with your words as my life’s blood.”

Hunter agreed, never to realize the weight of that promise until one Sunday morning when John’s mother called, crying incoherently.

John…had died.

Hunter was left in a cold world without his best friend and doppelgänger. Hunter still thinks about that moment to this day. How the morning light crept through the bedroom window while Hunter stared at the ceiling, noticing how the popcorn texture created cruel, jagged shadows. How everything started to blur as his chest was crushed beneath the weight of what he was hearing, each word stacking heavily upon the other until only fitful, ragged gasps of air could escape his throat. Only fiery tears existed, especially after the horrific realization that Hunter now had to make some of the hardest phone calls of his life to the circle of friends who orbited around John’s solar pull.

Their star was no more, leaving their universe a colder and darker place.

John not only left Hunter, but a friend named Valenta as well. There was also Nathanial and Depweg. The friends were each stricken numb with the loss of such a beloved flare of life. But…

When the three found out that Hunter was keeping his promise to write the greatest story ever told—starring their dear friend, John—they demanded to be a part of the adventure. Each of them immediately knew what type of supernatural character they wanted to play in this urban fantasy eulogy. It would be a funeral pyre of words, and their fictional personas would be John’s pallbearers.

So please, as you read the following pages, feel free to laugh. Laugh at the situations John is placed in and his dickish dialogue to those around him, because John is 100% in this story without alteration (albeit he is a vampire). Laugh and let his memory live on inside the theater of your mind. Like he does in ours.

Thank you, sincerely, from the bottom of my beating heart, for giving my best friend the chance to live again. You are part of this magical ritual, and that would make him the happiest man in the…well, wherever the hell he is.

To give you an example of just how much I adore this series since this is currently the last book written, I set a time limit each day for how much of it I was allowed to read. I didn't want to fly through it and just read the whole thing in a day or two and then have to wait forever for the next book.

As usual, Blain has done a great job of grabbing and keeping my attention. Which is no easy feat these days now that I'm a jaded old lady. The action just keeps on rolling with minor breaks in between for story and pesky little details. But I love every crazy minute of it. I've flown through this series faster than most just because it made me actually feel something for the characters that I haven't felt in quite a while. Before I started this series, I was in a major reading slump. The Preternatural Chronicles laughed in the face of my slump, grabbed me, and pulled me along like one of my kids spotting a free candy store. Except I didn't resist like I would have if it were my kids.

I really like how Blain has the angelic, demonic, and everything in between all rolled into one super-funny series. I think I've only figured out a couple of minor details before he was ready for me to, and that is something I love. I don't like to figure out who is behind the mask before it's time, so when it happens its usually a disappointment, but that is something that I rarely worry about with these books.

Just when you think you know what's coming next, Hunter Blain laughs in your face and throws something new and unexpected right in your eye holes. I love the personalities of each character, and I seriously hate hate the villains.

If you haven't started this series, don't start with this book. Go back to the beginning and start there. And be sure to read the novellas too. They give a bit more insight into the world of John the Vampire and friends.

If you like goofy urban fantasy humor and epic battles between good versus evil then this is the perfect series for you. John Cook's story is also revealed by the writer to be far more personal than we ever let on. I was touched by the tribute and am looking forward to the next installment.

Another amazing entry!

Ah where to start. This morning I was driving home and got stuck in front of a train passing. As it passed, I was hit with the most terrible force I could've been hit with in that moment. Let's just say Chipotle is even more unforgiving than taco bell. I caused a bunch of cars behind me to wail on their horns as I peeled outta the line to go find the nearest toilet, while pinching my second prettiest cheeks together. Thank Lilith I found a gas station nearby. I ran in and sat down on the John(HeHe) and not a second later filled it. With nothing to do while I did my business, I started reading. I became so engrossed in the picture Hunter so masterfully painted that I ended up spending much more time than I should have and both my legs fell asleep before I realized it. So once I finished my business, and got feeling back in my legs, I set out to finish driving home. I was sorely tempted to pull over and finish multiple times(the book not my uh emergency brown time)! I enjoyed the book far more than I thought I would and can happily say that not only did it live up to the hype, it IS THE HYPE!

Hey another enjoyable read from Hunter Blain

As a reader of Shayne Silver, Hunter Blain was recommended on my Kindle. I'm always a bit wary of jumping into another urban fantasy/young adult fantasy series (I'm 55) but I'm very pleased I did. Tre heureux, indeed! That's French for very pleased, BTW.

I'm completed hooked on the story arc and it always pays off, not entirely at the  conclusion, but enough that your sated but hanging by a fingernail on the cliff edge ender! It's a guilty pleasure to chuckle with Mr Blain's characters and roll my eyes in duality with them as well as leak a tear and Brian in frustration but I do enjoy his writing style.

I'm a life long disciple of the master Stephen King and in recent years started dipping my toes into this adjacent genre of urban fantasy. It began with Bella Forrest in all honesty, then I discovered Shayne,  Robert J Crane, and others and now Hunter!

Throughout this series of epic good Vs evil, redemption, forgiveness, love, loss, friendship and more, your emotions do take a wild ride.

Please try this series and the writer,I don't think you'll be disappointed at alli site haven't been!

Those Wonderful Words! Hunter Blain entertains again!

Y’all. John Cook has returned in Book 7 of The Preternatural Chronicles and WOW does Hunter Blain bring it!

Book 7, Those Wonderful Toys, is on a whole other level! Classic John snark and humor and pop culture comments! The movie and book references alone will have you laughing in among the what-the-hell and NO-HE-DIDN’T moments. Nonstop action that bounces through various dimensions as well as different character points-of-view. There are new wereanimals, wizards & warlocks, faeries, gods of various pantheons, angels, demons, and of course, a trying-to-be good versus definitively-evil fight to stave off triggering the end of the world and all humanity. This is one crazy roller-coaster full of humor, deep emotion, and some twisty revelations!

If you haven’t read novella 3.5, Moonlight Equilibrium, you might (really definitely) want to do that before reading this one.

I’m continuing to really enjoy this series and the way the size and scale is ratcheting up. Ulric continues to be a thorn in John’s side and there’s more than a couple of threads to keep the story moving along.

I think the one slight niggle I had is the amount of distracted thoughts the main character, John, gets. His thought process has always got sidetracked but this book took it to a new level and it got distracting.

I think one thing that I do love is the author’s relationship to his fan base. There’s lots of nods to running jokes, conversation threads and people in his Facebook fan group... which he shamelessly mentions in the book.

I don’t think this was the best in the series, IMO, my fav to date is Holey Sheoly (book 6) but I’m certainly look forward to the next one.

How do you beat a super charged were-pire from Hell?

John, Ludvig, and Hailey have there hands full. Taking out the last of the warlocks takes everything they have to give. And then more. Depweg is learning to conquer the feral beast within with King Taylor's help. Magni has fallen in love and someone is making illegal portals in Fairie.
For poor John life is nothing but a constant battle. Fighting Ulric leaves him broken in body and spirit. Who will live and who will die? Samael is fighting dirty to take everyone down so he can open the Gates of Hell.
In this book Hunter Blain keeps you on your toes. Madly reading from one page to the next. Waiting to see where the plot goes next. You need to get your copy now. John On!!

Another cracking installment of the wild ride that is the Preternatural Chronicles.

Hunter has taken a different approach with the narrative of this story and in my opinion it has paid off. The character development is fresh, which is fantastic to see as we're nearly half way through the series. There is always a danger of things going stale and The Wonderful Toys is as fresh as baked bread.

It's got ups and down, laughter and some truly heart wrenching moments but I loved every second of it. Can't wait for book 8

OH John that was epic need cake

I loved the new chapter layout with a bit more depth on the side characters and how their stories intertwine with John Could not put this down and final battle was full of action and left new questions that will hopefully be answered in future books.
New characters introduce and all the gang back together in this book , another rollercoaster of emotions felt throughout reading, full of movie, book quotes made me laugh plus a shout out to fans of this series . This book will not disappoint on an already additive series .

Hunter Blain is at the top of his game with Those Wonderful Toys. Any time an author can make me want to hurl, or hurl my Kindle, or hate a character as much as I hate Ulric, s/he's doin' it right.
I'm not going to say anything at all about the plot. I don't want to spoil even the smallest joke, pun or event. Some things just need to be experienced. So, get reading - you'll love it! And probably hate yourself in the morning.

My words won't do this justice

Things heat up and then blow up all through this one! I don't think there is a single page that didn't have my heart racing and my mind stutter stepping. Crazy battles and an even crazier story. Honestly, my heart was in my throat at some points. John and the gang go through so much in this book, and it makes me a little nervous for what comes next, but I can't wait to find out!

Oh my gosh!!!

John has always given us a wild ride. His character has grown big time along with his friends. You need to start at the beginning to be able to track the changes to John and his friends. But do it!! This book had a lot of laugh out loud crazy and then tears and WTH was Blaine (our crazy author person) thinking!! Oh and what a cliff hanger!!! I love this series and you will too!

Best yet?

Is this the best so far in the roller coaster ride that is John's unlife? Nope. It certainly does the job of setting the stage for the next loop the loop though. You gotta ' have the short safe parts to enjoy the eye popping stuff ahead, right? Of course nothing Hunter writes is safe for any of his characters. You have been warned. Mayhem and tragedy await on these pages but I'm sure it's all necessary for the future of our hero.

I have read the whole series and have enjoyed the journey. My only issue with John is I think his irreverent attitude is taken to extreme at times. I do appreciate his sense of humor during dire events. I found it helpful to laugh at myself during Viet Nam under duress. Others couldn't comprehend why I was laughing during a firefight - it was that voice in my mind talking to me much like John's. I look forward to the next book.

Just when you think you understand stuff….

John is John doing good while thinking he’s never going to feel good dewpeg and the nerd wizard are in faerie training and falling in love then there’s were-pires who have god like ability s then there’s lilly(ith) is she totally helpless with the life debt she owes the devil and some other really interesting twists and turns and if it’s not the gates of hell that has everyone else ( in the shadows) is worried about what is it?

Not nearly as enjoyable as the other books in the series

While the main story arc was definitely on the downturn, the previous books had managed to insert way more humor, even around the most brutal points in the story. With this book, it feels like the author is getting series fatigue. I really hope that’s not the case, and the next book is better, because it’s been a fun series to read until this one.

WOW

I've been a fan of this series since the beginning. Every book delivers on a massive scale with humor, action, and extraordinary characters. I have to say this one had me cringe and audibly yell " no" on a few parts. But that is why I love it! In my opinion, when a book makes you feel this way it's more than just your average book. Can't wait for the next one!

John On!

I can’t say enough good things about this series. I can just feel the love that has gone into crafting this tale. I must admit, this was a particularly difficult book to get through. No spoilers. It was an emotionally taxing journey but I’m drumming my fingers waiting impatiently for the next installment.

Another soiled entry into the John-A-Verse by Mr Blain. I’m not 100 % sure where the series will ultimately end up going, but I’ve definitely got a feeling it’s barreling towards its final destination… where ever that is??? I look forward to seeing to seeing what kind of twists & turns it takes & where we end up at the end.

outstanding as always!

What to say! I love this series! The humor, mixed with action, and twists and turns of a fantasy epic, are brilliantly written. Hunter is an absolutely amazing author! John On to book 8 and I can’t get enough! Why the holy sheoly has this series not been picked up by Netflix (I mean HuFlix) yet????

Some interesting developments

I enjoyed this one overall, and there were some very intriguing elements. I do feel like John gets beat up bad A LOT for someone so powerful, and that is getting a bit old. I didn't appreciate what happened in chapter 32, but that is a personal thing for me. There was a lot of action and humor, which I enjoyed very much.

So Freaking Good!

One of the best series I've ever read! It's completely insane, in a good way. The characters have a depth to them that is hard to find. The series is intense, well-written, and uniquely funny. You really need to read the whole series!

Disappointed and tiring

I'm so disappointed in this book, especially the ending. The battle went on and on with no kind of satisfied conclusion. The cliffhanger was the worst I have ever read. I feel ripped off. Don't waste your time.

All I can say is that I spent that day reading. I had things to do but once I started the book, I could not put it down. If you are a fan of Hunter Blaine’s work, you will love this book. If you are not a fan, why not?!
