A passenger train ran from Portland to Coos Bay, but given my family, it was cheaper to catch one of our steamers headed south. The ships didn't usually put in on the route from Gray's Harbor to San Francisco, but for my brother, they made an exception. That's how it was when you were a Vogel. There were bigger ship-builders and richer lumber companies, but my family did well enough.
