India Song

Enrique Vila-Matas, PARIS NUNCA SE ACABA
«V.CÔNSUL - Esta ária [Índia Song] dá-me vontade de amar. Nunca amei.»

It would have been perfect to read this play by the sea. The sea sound would accompany the story. From time to time one could raise the head and look at the sea and contemplate... remember... wonder...
This is the story of a love affair which takes place in India in the thirties, in an overpopulated city on the banks of the Ganges. Two days in this love story are presented. It is the season of the summer monsoon.
Four voices—faceless—speak of the story. Two of the voices are those of young women, two are men's. The voices do not address the spectator or reader. They are totally independent. They speak among themselves, and do not know they are being heard.
The voices have known or read of this love story long ago. Some of them remember it better than others. But none of them remembers it completely. And none of them has completely forgotten it.
We never know who the voices are. But just by the way each of them has forgotten or remembers, we get to know them more deeply than through their identity.
The story is a love story immobilized in the culmination of passion. Around it is another story, a story of horror—famine and leprosy mingled in the pestilential humidity of the monsoon—which is also immobilized, in a daily paroxysm.

Lola Valérie Stein; Michael Richardson; The Ambassador; Anne-Marie Stretter (née Guardi); the Beggar Woman; a shit ton of lepers; two Female Voices; two Male Voices; overuse of ellipsis; the French Residence; the gaudy hotel on the nearby island; fashionably dressed young people dancing incessantly to India Song; Beethoven's Sixteenth Variation On a Theme of Diabelli (motif); lack of narrative coherence (complete); love; death; death; love; yearning; sobbing; pining; A.M. Stretter's red bicycle; a fan moving at nightmare slowness (?); a fan moving with nightmare unreality (?); the imaginary cool of drawing rooms; a black wrap; emphasis on A.M.'s pallor; emphasis on how she must be naked under that black wrap; death; emotional pain; jilted nineteen-year-old brides; seductive older Italian woman (stringing along > 3 men); A.M., Michael, and The Man In White on the floor of the drawing room; they are taking turns watching her sleep (?); Michael touches her face to the extent that I feel uneasy; Michael caresses her sleeping body; Michael gets up; Man In White caresses the hell out of that sleeping body (but is she really sleeping???); death; pain; love; yearning; sobbing; the Beggar Woman's bald head; the Lovers On the Ganges (?); A.M.'s mysterious death; the brief summary; love; death; yearning; the void.
Duras can be great, but this was such a chore to get through (several readings). Convoluted, incoherent mess of a play.

Comparable to The Vice-Consul. Intrigued to see if watching the movies with these characters (India Song, Her Venetian Name in Deserted Calcutta, and La Femme du Gange?) will change my opinion.

A musical variation on 'The Vice Consul', now a sort of ghost story. By turns blindingly original, obtuse, beautiful, atmospheric, volcanic.

i love the way she combines mediums so much like i didn’t even know this was a play script i thought it would be a film script as the film is like a literal masterpiece but i loved this, her writing style is unreal

This references characters from other works of Duras', Lol Stein and The Vice-Consul, but despite not having read those I was still intrigued.

It was the beautiful song of Jeanne Moreau that brought me to this book, and I’m not sure if this was written inspired by the song or the song was written for the play (there's a lot about music in this play). I liked the strange atmosphere she’s created in this book, and "Heat and Dust" by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala comes to mind as well.
I don’t know if it’s intentional, but the staging instructions were actually written beautifully as if a part of the prose. Writing a whole book of those instructions could be such an interesting exercise.

Yes indeed, Marguerite Duras is a French literary Lars Von Trier, willingly dropping the reader into a state of doubt and unease. 'India Song' continues upon the story of The Ravishing of Lol Stein and is equally vague and disturbing.
In 'India Song', the story of Michael Richardson and Anne-Marie Stretter is elaborated upon. (Hey, at least Richardson is consistent in his choice of women. Stretter is a nutcase as well!). In true Duras style, nothing is really clear in this book. In fact, the story (if there is any to be told) is delivered by a variety of voices that have their own interests at heart. They are far from omniscient, trustworthy or consistent and this, of course, has its repercussions for the general experience of the book as well.
'India Song', in the end, is an intriguing little book/play, which succeeds in describing some very visceral scenes, but which is also very empty. There's nothing to describe, really. I'm out of words.

I hate to give anything by Duras lower than a 4, but her playwriting isn't my favorite. I ended up reading it not so much as a play but a filmscript, imagining how brilliant it could be on screen had she directed it (had she? I don't know..). In that sense it reminded me of the dialogue in Hiroshima.. but presented as a play, I'm not really sure what one would do with it-- no montage, etc. I'm sure there could be and have been some brilliant renderings of it, but my rating is based on how it stands alone.

I have finished this book a couple of days ago but i couldn't bring myself to write a review...
I still don't know what to say about this one.
It's beautiful, just like the movie, but there's more to imagine than to understand. Marguerite Duras was a madwoman!

Oh no, it's a play, based on her novel Le Vice-Consul, which has been translated - someone should send me a copy. Sounds like an unusual play, so I watched the unusual movie she made afterwards - a hundred times better than reading the play, though they're both so elliptical that I'm afraid I missed how they're meant to be savage attacks on colonialism.

Understood this less than any other play, but the atmosphere was phenomenal. This would be a wonderful and transforming performance because of all the stage directions, but as a play text it is very difficult to experience wholly.
