What do you get when the galaxy's greatest evil escapes confinement on its home world and possesses the body of a discarded teddy bear here on Earth? An adorably evil teddy bear that eats cats, chases skirts and torments children. Book Of Deady Volume 1 collects the first three sell-out issues of Deady by Voltaire, the creative genius behind Oh My Goth, What Is Goth, Painted Black and Chi-Chian. All of the deadly plush doll's hilarious and offensive adventures are together in this one complete edition, featuring all of the famous and infamous guest creators including Clive Barker, Neil Gaiman, James O'Barr, Dan Brereton, Roman Dirge, Ted Naifeh, Junko Mizuno, Gris Grimly, and many, many others.
(First of all this is the collected vol 1-3... not just vol 1 like it says) Normally I like Voltaire and his cultural skewering. And I was excited to see all the collaborators and crossovers he was working with: Neil Gaiman, Gris Grimly, Ruby Gloom, Roman Dirge, Che Gilson, Clive Barker. But this just fell flat. It's just... mean. And stupid. There's no real story development and very little to make you laugh. You just roll your eyes and think "whatever." Maybe I'm jaded, but most of this was just... dumb.
Not for those faint of heart. Deady is not what he seems, a homicidal maniac from outer space with a great love of women trapped in a bears shape. No wait... he is exactly what he seems.
A great collection of short strips about the life of Deady pre and post arriving on Earth. Multiple styles but also with a number from the uber talented Voltaire. A great Gothic set of strips that really show the way that things can change and be different if you see yourself differently. From the inside is where the changes come.
