Sir David Ramon Hawkins, M.D, Ph.D. was a nationally renowned psychiatrist, physician, researcher, spiritual teacher and lecturer.

Founding Director of the Institute for Spiritual Research, Inc. (1983) and Founder of the Path of Devotional Nonduality (2003), Dr. Hawkins lectured widely at such places as Westminster Abbey; Oxford Forum; Universities of Notre Dame, Michigan, Argentina, Fordham and Harvard; University of California (SF) Medical School; Institute of Noetic Sciences; and Agape Spiritual Center (Los Angeles). In addition, he has been an advisor to Catholic, Protestant, and Buddhist monasteries. He conferred with foreign governments on international diplomacy and has been instrumental in resolving long–standing conflicts that were major threats to world peace.

He is featured in recent documentary films, magazines, and radio interviews (e.g., Oprah Radio and Institute of Noetic Sciences) for his work in the areas of health, healing, recovery, spirituality in modern life, consciousness research, and meditation.

Dr. Hawkins entered the field of medicine to alleviate human pain and distress, and his work as a physician was pioneering. As Medical Director of the North Nassau Mental Health Center (1956–1980) and Director of Research at Brunswick Hospital (1968–1979) on Long Island, his clinic was the largest practice in the United States, including a suite of twenty–five offices, two thousand outpatients, and several research laboratories. In 1973, he co–authored the ground–breaking work, Orthomolecular Psychiatry with Nobel Laureate chemist Linus Pauling, initiating a new field within psychiatry.

His clinical breakthroughs brought appearances on The Today Show, The Barbara Walters Show and The Mcneil/Leher News Hour. In the 1970s, he co–founded several psychiatric organizations, including the Editorial Board of the Journal of Schizophrenia and the Attitudinal Healing Center in New York.

Many awards followed, such as The Huxley Award for the "Inestimable Contribution to the Alleviation of Human Suffering," Physicians Recognition Award by the American Medical Association, 50–Year Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association, the Orthomolecular Medicine Hall of Fame, and a nomination for the prestigious Templeton Prize that honors progress in Science and Religion. In 1995, in a ceremony officiated by the H.H. Prince Valdemar of Schaumburg–Lippe at the San Anselmo Theological Seminary, he became a knight of the Sovereign Order of the Hospitaliers of St. John of Jerusalem (founded in 1077) in recognition of his contributions to humanity.

I am no book reviewer (and have never been moved to write about any book before) but rather an enthusiastic reader who has become a big fan of Dr. Hawkins and his work.
What follows are some of my thoughts.

I am currently re-reading this book for the fifth time
Each time I finish I begin it again immediately.
With each reading I become aware that things I thought I'd grasped strike my consciousness in a different way opening up a more thorough understanding of the material.

In my opinion Hawkins has more credibility than a lot of authors who attempt to write on the subject of consciousness.
His list of awards and accomplishments is impressive to say the least. For one example, he co-authored "Orthomolecular Psychiatry" with Nobel Laureate chemist Linus Pauling, initiating a new field within psychiatry.

I find the book so compelling due to my personal philosophy gained after years of reading quite a lot on the subject of "the search for truth", which has led me in many directions... religion, science, philosophy, metaphysics, etc.

It especially resonates with me since I have become a student of A Course In Miracles with which Hawkins' explanation of the human condition dovetails nicely.

His personal story of recovery from many ailments too numerous to mention, along with a number of stories from fifty plus years as a M.D. and psychiatrist, are excellent examples of what we can accomplish in our own lives.
Simply reading excerpts from the book I believe many will find his work as fascinating as I did.

The ideas presented here (and also in ACIM) are rather foreign to the majority's way of thinking and I would urge a temporary suspension of one's personal beliefs - aka: an open mind, to allow these ideas serious consideration.

That being said I find I do not agree with everything Hawkins has written and I have read all of his books - a number of them more than once - starting with the trilogy, "Power vs Force: The Hidden Determinants of Human Behavior", "The Eye of the I: From Which Nothing Is Hidden" and "I: Reality and Subjectivity", continuing through "Healing and Recovery".

I judge all these book to be groundbreaking in their subject matter and clear in their presentation and highly recommend them to any who finds their curiosity even slightly aroused.

I am presently awaiting, with great anticipation, shipment of Hawkins' newest book, "Letting Go: The Pathway to Surrender", in which he details the method used for his own healing and recovery.

This was a transformational point in my healing.
Each chapter is a segment from seminars. There are segments of information that are repetitive. For me, I needed that. It was like a little nudge to incorporate that piece into my life.
Like all of Dr Hawkins books, there are segments I pulled out and wrote down in a notebook. I meditate on each one daily, sometimes twice daily. Once the opportunity manifests into my life that allows me to incorporate it, I saw thank you and move to the next segment.
If this is the first book someone reads of Dr Hawkins, it is important to note that it is not like his other books.
His other books are page after page of brillant applicable material that is rarely redundant. Most of the time I would have at least 12 pages of notes (front and back) of information from one book alone to incorporate into my consciouness.
He is a profound teacher.
I once saw him at a seminar and I could not believe the aura that surrounded him. It was beautiful.

This man does not cease to offer immense depth and insight into the the power of consciousness and how it pervades all initiatives regarding healing and the willingness to heal. His work is profoundly enlightening and beyond our present times. This particular book really reveals the foundations to what is required for any healing process to unfold. It is true to principles in eastern spirituality and yet maintains substantial clinical evidence to support his propositions and beliefs. For anyone looking to explore their own healing mechanism , or is in the healing arts this book is a manual and a must on your shelf. I never tire of his wisdom and profound sensitivity to the truth. The best in health always. Piera B

This has proved to be an extremely important book for me personally, since David Hawkins has with his information set me on a palpable path of self-healing. More about this later.

Hawkins continues to refer to his map of consciousness, where the various states of mind have been allocated values ranging from 0-1000. All those calibrated as having values below 200 are negative states and regarded as levels of falsehood, while those above 200 are levels of truth. Above level 200 one is no longer a victim. Enlightenment calibrates between 700 and 1000.

The various states are calibrated through kinesiology or muscle-testing.

Hawkins has previously suffered from innumerable life-threatening conditions. He healed himself by letting go of resisting the pain and various symptoms of the conditions and cancelling the mental label. He affirmed: “I am an infinite being, and I am not subject to that. I am only subject to what I hold in mind.”

I already knew about this precept of affirming that one is an infinite being and thus not subject to illness, poverty or other calamities from the late Japanese master Taniguchi. I have read and reviewed several of his – valuable - books in the Truth of Life series. This assertion/belief forms the basis of the Seicho-No-Ie movement, thousands of members of which have healed themselves of innumerable otherwise incurable diseases. Though I greatly appreciated these teachings I was apparently not at the time ready to be healed.

What was illuminating for me in Hawkins’ book was his instruction that we let go of resisting “the sensory experience”. Again, this was not new to me, since Abraham (as channeled by Esther Hicks) also tells us that we can easily heal ourselves of all diseases simply by letting go of resistance. However, I found it difficult to do this and did not feel anything while trying to do so. Until reading this book, that is.

The author explained that he had healed himself of all his diseases within time periods of a few months up to two years (for one disease) by using this technique. When I tried it I felt immediate relief from my pains. They were still there, just as before, but it just didn’t matter. This was just as Hawkins had stated would be the case. Not only that but each time I let go of resistance to the pain a wave of energy flowed through me, activating various detox/chemicalization reactions in the form of a gentle itching and various minor symptoms throughout my body, so I knew healing was occurring (I experience these symptoms each time I receive some sort of healing). This wave of energy was accompanied by a strong feeling of well-being, at times ecstatic/blissful, together with the sensation of a hand being placed on the top of my head.

I am continuing to experience this ecstatic wave of healing throughout my body and am deeply grateful to Hawkins.

I’m not saying that everyone carrying out this process on him/herself will experience this reaction. Hawkins himself does not mention it. I have been working on myself in various ways during the past years and now everything seems to be coming together. It is like a miracle for me, and it was this book that triggered the healing.

I found this to be a fantastic, illuminating book, since the author is so open about his personal experiences and because of the way he explains how he personally was successful in healing himself, we are enabled to believe that we can heal ourselves too.

There are chapters about how to cope with fear, losing weight, depression, alcoholism, cancer, etc, etc. The process of letting go of resistance can be used for everything, indeed one can let go of resistance to life itself. It has transformed my life.

A valuable section of the book is the final one entitled “About the author”, where Hawkins describes his life and his wonderful spiritual experiences/higher states of consciousness. I personally experience the ecstatic/blissful wave of healing just by reading a page or two of the book, or even a few lines for that matter. He refers to “a sweet, delicious band of energy continuously flowing up the spine and into the brain”. This resembles what I experience when reading the book.

Again, I certainly can’t promise that everyone or even anyone else will have this experience, but, particularly if you have severe health problems, I would absolutely recommend that you read the book and try out the letting go of resistance technique.

The author, who is an extremely intelligent and gifted man, has experienced so many serious health issues and calamities in his life that it is as if he has experienced these things precisely so he would have to work out how to deal with them (which in view of his giftedness he was uniquely qualified to do), just so he could through his writings subsequently inform us of the solutions he found, thus contributing to our healing and development.

Now I’m going to work my way through all David Hawkins’ books, since I’ve now become addicted to his work!

Read the book!

P.S. I’ve just discovered that I previously reviewed a book by Howard Raphael Cushnir entitled “Unconditional Bliss”, where I chose the title for the review as “Let go of resistance, accept everything and eventually experience bliss”. I now see that this is true.

I gave this five stars in spite of the author’s terrible writing style, because it is a treasure trove of valuable information, not only about psychospiritual healing, but also about the whole process of spiritual awakening.

I liked this book much better than the other volume I read by this author, Letting Go: The Pathway to Surrender, because this book has plenty of actionable healing techniques along with tons of insight into the various conditions it discusses, where I found Letting Go: The Pathway to Surrender to be light on usable techniques.

I think this is a collection of material from the author’s many lectures on healing.

Be forewarned that this is not an easy or light read. In fact, it was a bit of a slog (but so worth reading for the content). The content is so intense I had to take frequent breaks. Plus, I’ve already mentioned the author’s poor writing skills.

I started reading this while I was at home recovering from hip replacement surgery. I’m now out and about, still recovering, but doing very well. This book helped, although I wish I’d read the chapter on Pain and Suffering before the surgery.

I’ve already used several of the suggested techniques. One for emotional healing and clearing has been especially helpful and goes deeper, faster, then many of the other tools I already have in my toolbox for processing emotions.

The book deals with all kinds of healing. Subjects covered include stress, handling major crises, pain and suffering, worry and anxiety, cancer, weight loss, alcoholism and addictions, and death and dying.

The author emphasizes a few major principles. One is that the cause of our suffering is never an external event like a divorce, but rather our emotional response to the event. Another principle the author highlights is that consciousness/spirit controls the mind which in turn controls the emotions and the body. Therefore, a disease in the body is simply an expression of long held emotions.

The “About the Author” note at the end details the author’s extraordinary journey to enlightenment.

David R. Hawkins was clearly a spiritual master, as the power of his energy radiates throughout the book. He was a very successful psychiatrist and medical doctor who wrote a work entitled Orthomolecular Psychiatry and then went in a more spiritual direction.

As for his writing style: well, it isn’t great. He is constantly appending “ness” onto many words. He’s fond of constructions like “beingness”, “doingness” and “lovingness”. Still, the content is such pure gold that it doesn’t matter.

Also, there is a lot of repetition. But this was deliberate and actually helpful. The content of the author’s famous “Map of the Scale of Consciousness”, which ranks different emotions for their spiritual energy, with shame being the lowest and enlightenment the highest, was repeated many times. This helped the content sink in, but didn’t make it any easier to read.

There are just so many good points in this book. I will be back to put more on my review.
Page 3 "A basic principle of recovery is that we are subject to what we hold in mind, which may, however, be unconscious."
Page 37 "Research by Princeton University showed that self-fulfilling prophecy is just that, and what we actively believe tends to manifest in our behavior and in that of others. This is what they call a 'creative social reality', a serious issue that affects everything from stock prices to the arms race, not to mention everyday interactions and additionally the details of one's personal health" Is this what we are living out today with the virus?
Page 39 "On the calibrated scale, Love occurs at 500 and Healing appears at 540. What kind of lovingness brings about an almost automatic healing within the body? It is unconditional love, that which is nonjudgmental, forgiving and aligned with understanding and compassion. Love sees, nurtures and supports all of life and honors its sacredness, and of itself creates a healing energy field that calibrates at 540." So far so good. Next is one to really think about. pg 39 "We cancel (illiness)) by affirming, 'I no longer believe in that. I am an infinite being, and I am not subject to that. I am only subject to what I hold in my mind". "When we muscle test that statement we find it to be true (the arm becomes strong). Pg 40 "We find that we have to let go of criticism, attack thoughts, critical thoughts, and judgmental thoughts" What that tells me is that you have to believe in that sickness to stay sick. If the mind truly controls the body then the body cannot have something the mind doesn't believe in. Pg 41 "To put oneself in an energy field of 540 is to automatically heal oneself. A loving thought then heals, and a negative thought creates illness". That's all for now. Let me know what you think of these ideas.
pg 47 "All the healings resulted from the willingness to let go of the condemnation of self and others, to let go of criticalness, self-pity, resentment, and all the negative energies at the levels below 200 including regret, worry, anxiety, grievances, self-contempt, and self hatred. It was the letting go of those things that shifted the energy field to one that brought about the healing. I kept working with it, canceling the belief systems of hypoglycemia and gout. As each belief system would come up I would cancel it and say "I no longer believe in that. I am no longer subject to that. It is the result of a belief system and I have the power to cancel it". Thus, we begin to own that we have the power to refuse, reject, and deny. I have the power to power to refuse that. I don't have to buy into that."
I'll leave you to read the rest of the good advice.

This is an amazing book on how to heal and recover from any known ailment to man. It is tackled through the mind, body and spirit. One learns how to heal through consciousness itself where one experiences all illnesses. By merely reading this book, one's outlook is transformed as with all Dr. Hawkins' books.

The writings of Dr. Hawkins simply flow on the page. In this book of the series, he goes into more practical information on healing from different ailments. Most of the practices consist of detaching from the body while understanding that the soul and mind are beyond the body. Then we have to let go of resistance to any resistance and simple experience the experience without judgment. This goes a long way.

I especially like the last chapter on Death and Dying where Dr. Hawkins gives personal examples on his experience with the deaths of close ones.

The only negative aspect of this book is the repetitions, especially at the beginnings of every chapter.

David R. Hawkins has many credentials, both as a clinician and as a spiritual teacher. He's world renowned and all information I've found on him credit his work and his advancement in spiritual practices. One thing I felt was lacking in his book, albeit aiming to be empiric and measurable, were scientific citations, palpable references to hard data. I would've expected this due to his background in psychiatry. He's mentioning the Map of Consciousness many times, and he does mention the arm test of resistance in the presence of truth, but I feel that it has many asterisks and preconditions to be taken into account. Perhaps it's too much to ask for a subject of study as elusive and personal as consciousness.

Other than that, a great book on getting closer to the Self. He repeats the various levels in the Map of Consciousness almost obsessively, always mentioning that a particular experience is tied to the consciousness level it's experienced from (shame, guilt, apathy, fear, anger, courage, neutrality, acceptance, love and so on). He encourgages welcoming all emotion. He explains body ilnesses as a consequence of the mind, its thoughts and negative programming (past experience). He encourages rising above the ego and the small self and immersing oneself in the overall consciousness, the greater Self - an equivalent of God that's not tied to a particular religion. He explains this path can be pursued through meditation, conscious awareness and self love. Hence, many good things this book has to offer, some of them I've experienced myself a while ago - back in a time when I wasn't all 'crippled by fear'. This is one of the steps I've taken to go back to that blissful place, and I can say it was a solid one.

Changed my life (:

This book is pretty wordy and repetitive, but the ideas conveyed are clear and simple and reading even just a few chapters can really fundamentally shift the way you look at the world. I feel like the concepts covered should be more widely distributed, and wish I'd come across these ideas earlier in my life. I 100% recommend everyone read this ALTHOUGH caveat being that the format isn't the best because of how repetitive and hard to understand it can be at first.

tldr: everyone needs to know the ideas covered in this book. The book itself is a little hard to read BUT if you don't worry too hard about understanding everything the first time you see it, the concepts are actually quite simple and life changing.

Read 20% of the book, found it to provide ideas that are too metaphysical as grounded in “science”. Still there were some nice sentiments on the power of our mind/consciousness to influence our bodies and state of being

I think this author has an interesting way of looking at life, and that there is wisdom in this book. Or at least something good the reader can come away with. That you have your own power within / your true, peaceful and accepting Self is what I came away with.

I do have a few criticisms, and that's mostly with the number system or "Map of Consciousness".
Basically Hawkins says the Map can't be disputed as proven by the strength test, which I find a bit fishy. He also draws mostly from anecdotes to make his claims, but will need to call something "clinical" out of the blue as "proof". He also really really wants me to Believe in God, but if we're dropping beliefs here--this is another belief that causes confusion and sometimes pain for people. Yes, I've had spiritual experience in my life and I'm not saying it can't work for everyone, or that I know everything (I'd be crazy to say that) but those are just some of the main problems I have with this work.

I guess according to him I'm just a big ol' skeptic still lead by my ego in certain ways, probably "below the 200 level" (or something) and I'm just fine with that for now.

Despite those things this book is worth reading if you're new to spiritual concepts.

I decided to stop drinking alcohol 12/21/22, and I wanted to find a book to support my decision. I found this book and have thoroughly enjoyed listening to it many times since first getting it that same day. There is only one chapter out of 15 that he talks about alcoholism. The other 14 chapters are wonderful also and deal with different subjects as: Stress, Health, Sexuality, Losing weight and Depression, among others. I feel that this book has been helpful to my well being.

What an amazing book and author!

This is the first I have read in the series although this is book 8. As I already have an understanding of the energetic resonances, levels of emotions and healing abilities of the mind, body and spirit, I did not find it too complicated, especially as the author helpfully repeats concepts and stories which help to solidify the knowledge that is emparted in this book. However I presume starting at book 1 would be more beneficial for those starting out on a spriritual journey or new to consciousness studies.

This isn't just for those seeking wisdom around healing from alcohol and depression as it gives an indepth understanding of how recovery from anything physical or emotional is attainable through letting go, releasing resistance and through being conscious of your internal state in order to transform yourself through an understanding of your level of consciousness against the map.

I especially liked the inclusion of tools for reprogramming your subconscious mind, the many examples of transformation and how to move upwards through each levels of consciousness from survival up to illumination and the qualties/mindset that one displays when living at these levels. If you have studied the charkas and energy systems of eastern traditions this book compliments those concepts and the journey and expansion of the spirit towards enlightenment but doesn't have one esoteric or religious language or terms which is perfect for those who like me have an integral or holistic approach to spirituality.

I have already ordered the other books in the series after this read!
