*JAW IS COMPLETELY UNHINGED.* I just....
How did we get here?
The tension between the characters is at an all time high. We've reached the end of the first story arc and I'm not sure how many more curveballs Ando can through at readers. Between the ex-fiance and the bat shit crazy mother, I'm not sure what to expect going forward. There were a lot of hard conclusions reached at the end of this one and my heart broke for Nao. While I'm glad that we got this time jump, I'm extremely nervous to discover what will become of our main characters. CW: miscarriage

I'm mentally exhausted reading this. But I love the game-changing cliffhanger—and the time skip!! Also, I knew it! The baby wouldn't be kept on the plot, I just couldn't imagine how that would play out in the middle of the story lol. Also, lol I felt so emotional seeing the pained expression in Tsubaki's face when he found out the truth! And, I swear the angst in this volume is killing me!

Content note for the SERIES: murder, death of a parent, violence, unfair loss of job/firing, domestic violence, abuse, involuntary confinement, attempted murder
Okay, I don’t wanna spoil anything, so I’m only going to give a vague-ish review of the first couple of books in the series! First, let me assure any of you who might not be interested in NSFW material (or disappoint those of you who are lol)– this isn’t that spicy of a comic. There are a few panels in each book so far that include very brief allusions to sex but don’t show anything outright.
Y’all. This series had me in a VISE GRIP!! It’s SO GOOD. It’s incredibly well written, and the art is just so beautiful and elegant, matching the subject matter perfectly. The number of kimono and wagashi illustrated in here alone is so satisfying.
This series is the kind that gets better and better with each volume, and that’s not something I can usually say about much these days, so I was so, so happy to read this. It unfolds throughout and never lets you rest on your laurels, thinking you know for sure what’s going to happen or who will be unveiled to be involved with the main plot or any number of subplots going on at the same time. Beautiful!
I love the characters, and I love how the creator develops their relationships across so many volumes. I felt so fulfilled watching these characters’ arcs unfold the way they did. I want to say more, but I would be spoiling SO MUCH if I did! Just, trust me, you need to go give this series a read, it’s fantastic. It’s no wonder they got a tv adaptation!
I disagree a bit with the jacket copy on this series, describing it as spine chilling. Maybe I’m desensitized by all the horror movies I watch (lol jk it’s a lifetime’s worth of trauma 😂), but this was actually much more of a wagashi-centric drama, romance, thriller for me than a spine chiller. And that is not a bad thing at all! I think this series is so successful in part because of how fluidly it combined so many genres into a seamless and engaging story.
My point is, the jacket copy doesn’t quite do it justice. If you like comics that introduce you to artisan crafts and what goes into making them, this is a comic you want to read. If you like enemies to lovers and/or enemies to friends, this is your comic. If you like mystery and thrillers, this is a comic for you. If you like attention to detail and well designed plots and other aspects of writing as a craft, this is definitely your comic! Odds are very good you’ll like this comic, my friend!
Now, lemme give you a couple warnings, though: there is a lot of showing of abuse, violence, and manipulative, if not gaslighting, behavior in here. There is murder, attempted murder, child neglect, the loss of parents, etc. There are some topics I wish the creator had addressed better, such as the domestic abuse aspects, especially earlier in the series. But I promise you, the story is worth it.
Overall, I love this series so much! I’m in pain waiting in line for books 17-19 from my library right now, and I can’t wait to see how it continues. Please read it so we can talk about it!

Read vol. 7-13.
My GOODNESS, the DRAMA. And I am EATING IT UP.
I would seriously love to see this as an anime. All the confections' colors would look amazing animated, as well as all the scenery and regalia.
Do not read further, unless you genuinely want all the big plot points spoiled:

CW for miscarriage.
The creepiness of Tsubaki's mother is still very much unsettling in this volume.
I like the tension that is happening with Nao, confused on whether to keep her love with Tsubaki or bring the truth to life. But of course, the mother of Tsubaki has to be creepy and conniving. Do I feel bad for her being in love with a man that is instead seeing a woman on the side? Kinda. But for her to freaking almost murder the head of the family, her father-in-law, for his will? Damn creepy lady.
And her creepiness had Nao lowering her guard and revealing that she is "Sakura", all with Tsubaki RIGHT THERE.
I'm glad Nao left in the end, and that we get a time-jump for the characters.

Well that escalated quickly. Tsubaki now knows Nao and Sakura are the same person, though he never did get to know she was pregnant before she apparently miscarries during the fire. His mother may have finally gotten her wish with Nao disappearing, and coincidentally his ex-fiancé Shiori is now back in the picture. Nao seems to be making her move to attempt some form of freedom however now that Tsubaki has no idea where is, indicating she's out to take end Kogetsuan, or at least as it currently stands.

Wow, this volume was so worth the wait! The drama was really there this go around and finally the big questioned has been answered, at least I hope so. I still say this series reminds me of a dramatic Korean Drama. I know it’s Japanese but it just gives me the over the top antics, plot twist, old person with a will and questionable air vibes that Korean Dramas have. Unfortunately, I’ll have to impatiently wait a bit for the next volume.

It was nice for some things to be revealed in this book while the tension and scheming continue. I still enjoyed reading this one but found myself feeling like the series is getting a bit repetitive and also predictable at times. I took a big break between books 6 and 7 and that might have impacted me. I'm excited to check out 8 and hope that the story grabs me as much as it had in the previous volumes.

This is unputdownable!!
RECAP: ex fiancée shows to ask about still being a patron, Nao inquires with first volume guy about leaving and working elsewhere, Grandpa writes a new will, tea ceremony, mom and grandpa struggle and she knocks him out and burns the main house. Nao collapses and wakes in the hospital. Ends with a time skip three years forward and she’s working as a confectionist rivaling Tsubaki.

Secrets have come out, , and there's an intriguing to cap off this first major arc of the series. I found myself feeling almost sympathetic with the proprietress, of all people. You'd think that the young master .

Oh goddamn! Had me on the edge of my seat the whole volume! I can’t wait to start “part 2”! I am sad about how things ended up between Nao and Tsubaki. I’m rooting for them to come back to each other though. They were victims in this whole situation. They don’t deserve all of this.

Wow. That was so intense. So many questions left unanswered in Part I; but knowing there’s a Part II is so exciting 😶 this series has layers and layers that just keep unraveling as well as piling up 🤣

😶 I'm a little speechless. The pacing and suspense kept me turning the pages faster and faster. I got mad and sad and sadder and then boom! What just happened? And now we get a part two? I didn't see that coming. I was expecting a wind down, but this is a total wind up!
