The Bluestocking War #2

The Beast's Bluestocking

Rate this book
From USA Today Bestselling author Eva Devon, writing as Maire Claremont, comes a brand new series that will sweep you away to the drama and angst of Regency England. Glittering ballrooms, wild moors, and brooding lords waiting to be tamed by bluestockings await...

Lady Phillipa's heart is on the verge of being broken. The man she has exchanged letters with, for months now, refuses to answer her missives. That man, after the death of his older brother, is now the Duke of Grey, one of the most powerful lords in the land. When his sister invites Phillipa to the country, she jumps at the chance to discover why the duke forsook their love. But when she arrives, she finds a broken, brooding man who insists keeping her away is for her own protection. But in his beautiful face, marred by scars, she sees the soul of the man she loves. Nothing will stop her fighting for their love. Not even his quest for vengeance.

Brutally wounded at the battle of Waterloo, Anthony, Duke of Grey, knows he can never allow Phillipa into his life. It matters not that he treasured every letter she wrote him. Or that those letters sustained him under the brutal command of Captain Adams. But now a duke, even though his body is irreparably scarred, he is determined to bring Adams to justice for his horrible cruelty towards the youngest members of his crew. Grey will stop at nothing to keep Phillipa safe and away from his war torn heart. After all, he is not the young man he once was. No, he will not allow Phillipa into his tortured world, even as he longs for her body and soul. But when she arrives at his castle, can he turn her away or will love tame the beast?

terrific Historical Romance

This takes place after the British Naval battle of trafalgar in 1805. The H who was seriously injured in the battle finds out that he is now a Duke ahis elder brother has died. The h and the H had been corresponding with each other and the h is the guest of the H’s sister. Because he is Wounded and doesn’t feel worthy the H tries to get the h to leave, but she is having none of that. There is some 🔥 scenes and then finally there is a HEA and they are getting married. Recommended.

Eh - Ok

I found the first in this series a solid romance, but this one I barely finished. First there were the annoying editing errors - repeated or extra words and such. Then I didn’t understand the heroine’s actions and / or found her actions unbelievable. Why say she isn’t going to stay where she’s not wanted, to only stay 5 more minutes and then storm out, and come back the next day? And doesn’t she end up doing the exact thing she says she would never do at the end of the first book? Also isn’t she a bit of a schemer according to the first book, but she doesn’t seem to have a scheme to get her own man? Couldn’t buy in to this one at all.

Page skipper - ridiculous and tedious

I've enjoyed other books in this series, but this one is a 2 or 2.5 star. The storyline is thin and poorly supported. The relationship between the leading man and a boy upon a ship lacks any depth or real connection yet dominates 50% of the story. It's like he's obsessed with an acquaintance. And the pages and pages of contemplation over a number of repetitive and uninteresting topics makes this a page skipper.

Spoiler alert:

Add to that the *highly* out of character and unconventional affair the heroine proposes and pursues. And the fact she ends up saying she is "delighted" to have killed someone. The book is a bit ridiculous.

Poignant

Anthony and Phillipa's story is amazing. They go through so much and love triumphs in the end.
Eva Devon writes an exceptional story.

Enjoyed the story, but there were several things that didn't make sense. The wealthy duke couldn't afford a rug or slippers to prevent his leg paining him, due to a cold floor? There were more plot points that didn't make sense, but I don't want to add spoilers. It really detracted from the story, though.

I was looking forward to reading this but couldn’t get beyond Chapter 4. The interaction between Philippa and Anthony was awkward, the writing became rather maudlin, and I was not in the least bit engaged. I really had no interest in following the romance of these two characters.
Such a shame. 😢

Dialogue bleh, how is philippa a blue stocking too? She’s not a nerd just stubborn? But at least she wasn’t martyring herself like tbh kinda felt like Augusta did

The Beast’s Bluestocking, Book 2 of The Bluestocking War series, was about Lady Phillipa Penworthy, the second oldest daughter of the Earl of Harrowton, and His Grace Anthony, the new Duke of Grey.
Phillipa, having exchanged letters with her friend's brother, Anthony, for months while he was in the Royal Navy fighting in the war, was worried when those letters were no longer being answered. Knowing he had been injured during the Battle of Trafalgar, and that upon the death of their elder brother, he had inherited the ducal title, she thought perhaps he now thought her beneath him, what with all the scandal surrounding her family because of her wastrel father.
When her friend, Clara, had requested she visit her in the country, Phillipa took her up on the offer...partly to spend time with her friend but mostly to see if she could find out why Anthony had stopped writing to her. However, ever since she had arrived, the Duke would not see her and, since she had never seen him before, she did not know what he looked like should she ever encounter him outside his home. After all, there weren't any portraits of him anywhere in his home.
Anthony, due to his multiple injuries from war, did not believe he could have a future with Phillipa, even though they had grown close in their exchange of letters. As a second son, he had nothing to offer her, but as an invalid duke, he didn't want her pity either. So when she visited his sister in their home, he hid from her until, during a chance encounter due to a sudden storm, she happened upon him staying in a cottage on his vast estate. After he told her who he was and that he was staying in the cottage to avoid her, he was determined to send her away.
The more Phillipa tried to be his friend, the harsher Anthony treated her, hurting her at every turn. He treated her like a whipping post every time she was in his presence and, although he believed he was right to turn her away so badly, it stung him to do so.
The title of the book did not suit the storyline. Nowhere in the story did it point to Phillipa being a bluestocking. If anything she was a pushy and thoughtless young lady who got her way more often than not. However, she didn't do anything that normal bluestockings would have done. She wasn't always with a book in her hand, she didn't delve too far into studying sciences or maths. She wasn't a young lady who found herself outdoors more than indoors. She was more into the normal things a normal society chit would do.
There was too much fluff in this book...almost as if the author ran out of ideas and just decided to do some introspection on the part of the characters. The angst and drama, though not out of proportion to the book, did not altogether make sense either. Some of the things that occurred in the story were not completely explained or finished. There were a few gaping holes that left the reader asking questions to which there were no answers. The chemistry was present, but the passion was somewhat hollow.
Phillipa's character was too modern for the time to be an acceptable Heroine. Her thoughts and actions were not those of a woman of the early 1800s. Anthony was also perhaps not the best for a Hero either. He was a considerable dunce, to be honest. While it was understandable that his injuries messed with his thought patterns, for him to take the stance he did where Phillipa was concerned didn't make an iota of sense whatsoever.
The book seemed a bit rushed in certain areas and made the book less enjoyable. For all that, it didn't earn a five-star rating, unfortunately, nor did it merit a place with the Keeper for the Shelves collection.

In the beginning, we find Anthony is a sailor who has received catastrophic injuries to his leg & back in the final moments of the Battle of Trafalgar. His friend informs him that the boy, Joe, serving on the ship died in the melee & to top it off, his brother has died, so Anthony is the new Duke of Grey. His friend returns Grey home to his younger sister, Lady Clara, to heal his outward cuts & bruises, to strengthen his leg which will always leave him with a limp & try to bring relief of all the mental anguish he has suffered - not only the war but the horrible Captain Adams who mistreated so many of the young boys - including Joe, who he love & tried to protect had died but he couldn't see him buried & put to rest because they could not find the body.

Lady Phillipa was one of three daughters of the debauched Earl of Harrowton & is best friends with Clara, the Duke of Grey's sister. Phillipa has managed to help get her sister married to a duke, her other sister has been saved from a bounder & is spending time away from London to avoid scandal and with the help of her sister's husband, her father has been sent to Italy and cannot come back to cause her problems.

Anthony & Phillipa wrote to each other & fell in love through letters over the months he was gone - then suddenly there were no more letters from him. She knew from the gossip pages & from Clara that he was home - he was a hero in society's eyes, but Clara told her of his wounds, both physical & mental & that he didn't want to see her. She goes to visit Clara in hopes of seeing Anthony - he turns on her, but she will not give up. The journey is a rough one with a hero feeling he is not deserving of happiness, not wanting ruin Phillipa's future with a whole man & a heroin who is stronger than "goat's breath" & will not give up. I highly recommend this book - it has friendship, love of family & friends, romance, danger, some spice, some tender moments that need tissues & a HEA.

The past comes calling

Anthony and Phillipa know each well very well and they have no idea what each looked like! Phillipa has written letters about the war with her father in her own household and Anthony has written about true war and his survival in it! When Anthony is gravely injured he has focused on revenge and not a possible future with the woman he has grown to care for!
Adams an awful hideously brutal captain from the war is the focus of Anthony revenge! Phillipa accepts an invitation from Clara Anthony's sister to come to Cornwall! Phillipa sees this as an opportunity to confront and meet Anthony and get answers! Anthony is in constant agonizing pain due to his injuries.
Danger is afoot at Anthonys home since he has poked the bear that is Captain Adams!
I was ashamed of Anthony and then Phillpa! Anthony nor thinking he deserved happiness and Phillipa for entertaining their actions didn't have repercussions! When danger finds Phillipa Anthony realizes he deserved happiness for all the hell he has endured but is it too late!???

Men can be frustrating....

Lady Philippa had always known her own mind, but things had become very complicated and she found herself unsure of how to proceed. She was not used to floundering. She knows her heart, but is confused by the actions of Anthony, the now Duke of Grey.

Anthony, Duke of Grey, has wounds both seen and not. Like a lot of men, he has made decisions for, and regarding, Philippa, with no thought to include her in those decisions. In doing so, he has become dictatorial and a bit manipulative, much like her father. His decisions were not for her benefit, but his. His belief that he was no longer of value for her was really selfish because he was scared of his own weaknesses.

I adored Philippa's strength and determination. She was not going to back down. She was going to fight for the right to have a choice. She was the perfect tonic for what was ailing Anthony.

This was a perfect read by the fire after a day of holiday preparations. Thank you Ms. Devon for a lovely read.

4 1/2*STARS *
A letter delivered by mistake to a Lieutenant Anthony, in the Royal Navy, becomes a lifeline from despair and loneliness. The letter was originally meant for her best friend, Clara, but Lady Phillipa response to Anthony's letters over several months. Writing of their hopes and dreams, they think of a life together The Battle of Trafalgar changes everything. Anthony doesn't write to Phillipa anymore. She decides to travel to Cornwall for answers. Anthony is now the Earl of Grey and a broken man severely wounded and full of revenge against the Captain who tormented his crew, especially a nine year old boy named Joe. Phillipa refuses to leave, even though Anthony pushes her away. Not after that kiss she won't. As Phillipa proves she's strong enough to face any challenge, Anthony realizes it's fate for them to be together. I love wounded heroes and the women who aren't afraid to stand up to them and can handle any situation.

This story was just ok for me. Frankly, I felt that Phillipa's character in this book (tone, actions, thoughts) was basically Augusta from the first book but with less depth. Also, I felt I connected more with the side character, Merrill, than I did with the hero. Lastly, I HATE it when the heroine has sex before marriage in this era with no thoughts to her reputation, what if she gets pregnant etc and with seemingly no promise of them ever legitimizing their relationship. I know the author was trying to make her seem brave and independent (she can have a love affair just like a man), but sadly in this era - she can't. And I really felt like she was settling.

I did like how Phillipa saved herself in the end. I'm not sure whether I'll read the third book. What I saw of Felicity in Book 1 made me not like her at all - a selfish, spoiled brat - but maybe she'll redeem herself in her own story.

Loved this story,

I read the first story in the series but am not sure what happened to the story of the second sister Felicity. Philappa is the youngest of the three sisters and we learned a bit about her in the first book. All three sisters had a miserable life growing up with a overbearing self centered careless father and we see in the books how they attempt to seek their happiness. This story is a love story that began through letters exchanged at first by accident but grew into love. Anthony was an officer in the Navy and was greatly wounded in a stole and found out before returning that his brother passed nd he was now the Duke of Grey. Due to his broken body and mind he decided to cut Philippa out of his life, but she had other plans nd that is where the story takes us. It is not a long read but very enjoyable with great character insight. Enjoy....

It was just okay. Phillipa and Anthony became acquainted when he accidently received a letter from her while he was at war (don't know how that happened) while she was writing his sister. He responded and a friendship developed. She told him of her family trouble and they developed feelings. As a second son, he was not in a position to marry her. His commander was mean. Anthony gets hurt badly. He is scarred and consumed with pain. His brother dies making him the duke. He returns home and becomes a recluse. His sister invites Phillipa to visit. Anthony hides and avoid Phillipa. Phillipa finds him and confront him. He tries to push her away. She says she love him and let sleep together. His former commander is out to punish him because he feels that Anthony his ruined his reputation. Of course he targets Phillipa. The book in a nutshell. Parts were too modern for me.

A nice read about second chance love.
Anthony was a second son that enlisted for the navy. There, he learned that he was now the Duke of Grey after the death of his brother and had to return to Cornwall to take his seat. Scarred and with a bad leg, he did everything to avoid Phillipa, a friend of his sister that he had exchanged letters with. Both in love but without a meeting, after his accident, grey decided to end their friendship.
Phillipa knows that she needs to meet Anthony after all those letters, but he doesn't want to saddle her with an invalid. She takes her life into her own hands and compromises Grey, they get their HEA once she takes care of Grey's revenge.
It was a quick read and the storyline is within a week or so.

Sad and Tender

Horribly disfigured during the battle of Trafalgar, Anthony, the Duke of Grey is no longer just the second son who wrote the romantic letters to Pippa. He is afraid he has nothing left to offer her, and tries to send her away.

Pippa, the daughter of an impoverished Earl feels she no longer owes her father anything, and has gone to the Cornish coast to meet her love. She has been corresponding with Anthony, now a Duke during his entire time at sea, and now he acts as if they had never had hopes for each other. Pippa refuses to give up so easily, and all but throws herself at him.

Their happiness is short lived when danger from Anthony’s past comes stalking him. Can they have happiness with so much darkness?

Read it through in one sitting and definitely worth a read.

While Anthony was a sailor during the war, Phillipa’s letters gave him something to look forward to. They built a bond without having met, but once tragedy strikes everything changes. Anthony and Phillipa’s story is not an easy path to a HEA. There is sadness, pining, and some action. Oh - there is definitely some steam. But all in all, it was a quick, engaging read and the ending made me smile.

CW: mention of war, abuse (mentioned), gun violence, violence, death (mentioned in the past and also described toward the end).

Second chance romance

in the Beast’s Bluestocking we find a second son off in war. A letter from the daughter of an impoverished Earl mistakenly makes its way to him and it’s the lifeline he needed. They exchanges correspondences over several months. Then, he’s badly injured, he becomes a duke, and his outlook and demeanor change. He abandons their friendship. Thankfully, his lady is made of sterner stuff. She fights for him and them. Her strength saves both their lives. It’s a great read!

Just… ugh. He’s been writing to her for years, they’re wonderful together. So then he gets his legs smushed by a runaway cannon on a boat. He wakes up, looks at his legs, and decides right then and there that he’s a monster, useless to all, a disgrace to women, and that he can’t possibly ever have the future he wanted. Yep, that’s the entire book premise, he thinks he’s too ugly and crippled to be worth love or worth anything. So he just cuts off the letters and hides from her. What an asshole. This book made me mad because it’s stupid.

Having corresponded. with a naval officer and second son, Phillipa had formed a attachment to Anthony. After a fierce battle which left him severely wounded, he also discovered his elder brother had died. He was now a Duke and would have to return to Cornwall his home. He had to protect his younger sister and his tenants. He was desperate to find a young boy who was believed lost in battle to bring his body back for proper burial. He also wanted revenge on his cruel Captain Adams who was abusive to everyone.
This was not the same tired story line and I thank you for a strong female

incredibly well written

This is an intelligently mature story. The author uses common sense in her arguments against irrational emotional decisions which Anthony in his physical and emotional pain makes. Phillippa is mature, self assured, intelligent and rational. She makes decisions based on what she fells is the right course of action and she weighs out her choices. Anthony’s best friend Merrill is also the voice of reason. The ending is a little surprising but very satisfying and the book ends tying up loose ends in a satisfying way. It’s an excellent read.

GLORY!!

It sings. Lyrically, rising to a crescendo, then rapidly tapering to a splendid end.
Here, we are presented with a wounded man and a strong woman who loves him.
He, being male, is convinced wounds make him not just undesirable, but even, unworthy of any affection.
She, being herself, knows a logical fallacy when she encounters it.
The characters are splendidly woven, the descriptions lyrical, the dialogue gentle but passionate (when appropriate)...

Surviving and Finding each other

I absolutely loved Anthony and Phillipas story. She fell in love with Anthony from his long letters to him and he the same. But when he is severely injured trying to save Joe he knows he must push Phillipa away. Phillipa will not stand for it, she loves Anthony and will be anything to help him heal in mind, body and soul. A beautifully written story with a wonderful ending.
