Mid-Season-One Zuko is held ransom by Chief Hakoda. Ozai's replies to the Water Tribe's demands are A+ Parenting. Hakoda is… deeply concerned, for this son that isn't his, and who might be safer among enemies than with his own father.
I started reading this fic a couple nights ago on the recommendation of a friend. I figured I'd read a bit before bed and keep going in the morning if it was any good. I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down. Until 2:30 in the morning when I finally forced myself to get some sleep. Then I spent all of yesterday finishing it.
I really like how the author writes Zuko. The walking on eggshells, the trying to figure out the rules and punishments and anticipating Hakoda's reactions really well done. It's what you'd expect from a kid who grew up in an abusive home but didn't really get explored in the show. And the way he discounts all these subtle, controlled uses of fire bending as just tricks, not real bending.
The crew's trust and acceptance were slow building and felt believable. Lots of fun characters too, it's hard to name a favorite.
I also really liked how the author expanded on the cultures of the fire nation and different water tribes and villages. Favorites were Zuko sitting vigil to guide souls to reincarnation and the way Hakoda made Chief decisions with input from the whole crew, sometimes in formal meetings, sometimes with them dropping in one at a time to give their thoughts.
And I'm glad to know Toph is out there living her best life.
The ending with Azula may have wrapped up a bit quickly, but I thoroughly enjoyed this fic. A fantastic AU for any ATLA fan.
Reread 2026, an excellent comfort read to return to.
I struggle to think of a single thing I didn’t like, except the fact that it ends, and I wish it was longer. The characters are written so incredibly well, and Zuko’s whole journey tugged at my heartstrings several times. The prose is phenomenal in every way, and the dialogue feels natural and flows beautifully.
