Anne Mather is the pseudonym used by Mildred Grieveson, a popular British author of over 160 romance novels. She also signed novels as Caroline Fleming and Cardine Fleming. Mildred Grieveson began to write down stories in her childhood years. The first novel that she actually finished, Caroline (1965), was also her first book to be published. Her novel, Leopard in the Snow (1974), was developed into a 1978 film.
Fun old skool. She was 18 years younger than him. The author did a good job writing the heroine as younger and the hero as pretty helplessly falling in love with her. She did seem to be able to mostly get her way with him. And he wasn't unnecessarily cruel to her. All in all just a fun jaunt.
I just loved the heroine Alex! A breath of fresh air. This was funny book at times and her pursuit of Jason was really something! Great chemistry between her and Jason, this is May/December. Cute story and loved the Spanish ranch descriptions. It was mesmerising to read. Definitely a favourite! Will read again.
Alex has spent her whole life in a convent while her father goes on archaeological expeditions. She starves for a taste of freedom and love, something which leads her to desperately trick her father's friend Jason on the former's deathbed into being her guardian! Jason never expects the "Alex" his partner rarely mentioned to be a girl, much less a 17 year old one. Soon she is thrust into his world, and unable to tolerate her fierce thirst for independence, he hires a nanny and takes her to his ranch. What follows is 100 some pages of the the heroine being treated like a kid by everyone- her nanny, Jason, the OW/the housekeeper, the farm hands and chided and berated for everything. She on the other hand has a zest for life, and expresses this by rebelling and occasionally throwing tantrums. The hero is hot and cold, the age difference is a big issue, the OW is evil, the pushing away is massive and resolution is unsatisfying. I felt bad for the heroine tbh, but she really needed to grow up a little, especially to "suit" the 36 year old moody hero- she came off as too vulnerable.
The book all together was pretty well done. It upset me at times because how could a father neglect his daughter so much? I just didn't understand, no matter what reason, why someone could do that. I love when the hero arrived as a white knight and it was kind of ironic and hilarious that the heroine could manipulate him so well. Great read.
Wow what a great find! He wanted her from the first and she was just hungry for love. That is what romance is all about not major sex but some sexy bits to keep it real. Awesome
Mildly disgusting because of the fact that the hero is 19 years older than the 17 year old heroine. My own father is only 20 years older than myself and I can't imagine being attracted to any of his friends, especially when I was 17!!
The heroine Alexandra is spunky and vivacious, although she does swing from extremes of emotion, but hay, she is a teenager! At some point I actually felt sympathy for the hero since he was so obviously fighting against the attraction, and even he knew it was wrong. But it made for good sexual tension. It would have been an all around better story if the age gap was not so extreme and if he did give her a few years to grow up before coming for her.
These May-December Harlequins can be fun if you don't go into it expecting too much. The heroine is 17 and the hero is 36. Now, while I could appreciate good-looking way older men when I was 18 (Brad Pitt at the time), I didn't want to date them. Of course, the heroine is looking for a father figure and lover wrapped into one, so maybe it works for her.
Nowadays, it's popular for authors to make teenage characters ultra-mature (old souls) which I find kinda boring. I mean, who wants to read about a personality-deficient teenager who has the mentality of a senior citizen? Not so with these old harlequins. The heroine was immature and impulsive (I dunno, like a 17 year old should be?)
And why oh why when a book is set in Latin countries do heroes' mistresses have to also be the damn housekeeper half the time? It's kind of insulting.
And what's up with the dude on the cover looking 56 and not 36? Something was just wrong in the 70s. Their standard for attraction usually involved people who looked way older than they were. Even the way they dressed and styled their hair made people in their 20s and 30s look middle-aged at first glance.
I wanted to like this one, I really did; but somehow this Lolita style romance didn't appeal to me. I'm usually Ok with a sizeable age gap between the h and the H, but it didn't work for me within this story. Probably because the h was not even 18. And the H was well into his 30s. It was a little too much. I honestly did think she could have waited a couple of years before she decided to throw herself at a man who was so many years senior. The plot itself wasn't as gripping as some of the others Ive read from Anne Mather. This was an ok read.
MY THOUGHTS: I guess readability was fine but I wasn't too enamoured of the heroine, Alex. When I first read her, she definitely seemed TOO immature, girly and naive. I just don't think she is ready to be in a serious relationship. As for Jason, well, he is definitely way older than her. Alex is 17 and Jason is 36. I don't really see how and why Jason is attracted/loves her. She just seems too immature for him. Yeah, I do think Jason should be ashamed of himself. I don't have any problems with the guy being waay older than heroine - only if the heroine is mature minded. But in this case, Alex just seemed so Eehhh... Also, Jason does seem a little crude in this book. Anyway, I don't really see any re-read value for me - expect to see if I can understand how and why Jason falls in love with her -_-
Once upon a time there was a little girl named Alex, whose mother died in childbirth and whose father, wishing for a boy, sent her away to be raised in a convent. It wasn’t until her father was ill and dying that he sent for her to live with him.
He told her wonderful tales of his friend, a hero named Jason. On his deathbed, her father asked her to write a letter to his lawyers requesting that she be sent back to the convent after his death. But Alex was tricky. She didn’t want to go back to the convent so she wrote a letter saying her father wanted Jason to be her guardian.
When Jason came to London to collect his ward he assumed he was going to take care of a young boy. What he found was a beautiful, seventeen year old girl. Unsure of what to do, Jason found a companion for the girl and took them back to his estancia in South America.
The housekeeper of the estancia was a wicked witch named Estrelia. She wanted the hero Jason and his money all to her self. She was not happy that Alex had come to love with them. She was mean and nasty to Alex. But Alex didn’t care, she loved Jason and would be strong and brave if it kept her near him.
The hero Jason was attracted to Alex, but she was eighteen years younger than him. He tried to keep his distance, but Alex was a little Lolita and made it very hard for him to do so. She also got herself in lots of scrapes. One day she went riding by herself and ended up in lost and injured. After rescuing her, Jason told her he was sending her back to London. She didn’t want to go, but Estrelia blackmailed her and forced her to leave.
She and her companion travelled back to London and she swore she would never return to Jason. But Jason had other plans. He waited a for a few months to pass and he went to London to let Alex know how he truly felt about her. Alex was ecstatic and she told him she loved him.
I'm really not sure how to rate this. Read it right after a re-read of Chase a Green Shadow where the h/H age diff is the same (a year more actually) so I kept comparing. Unfavourably I must admit.
Alexandra:
a. Didn't like her much. She comes off as a petulant child. Though I love it when 17 year olds are written as seventeen year olds, Alexandra is so immature I just couldn't see her as a romantic lead.
b. Umm... well... no moral judgement here but a dumb 17 year old all but grabbing a 36 year old man's *hem hem* was... weird? Silly? Unbelievable? Dunno! Just off! Seriously his pants were the only place she didn't go.
Jason:
Get a restraining order? Send the crazy little nymphomaniac to college somewhere across the globe? How did you fall in love with her? What exactly attracted you to her? The sexy air between her ears?
It was a fast paced and fun book, very well written and quite intense at times. I just wasn't sold on the romance. Maybe as I mentioned before I was comparing to Tamsyn and Hywel from Chase a Green Shadow, where I respected the characters and thought their HEA might work.
sweet one! jason seemed cold at times but he wished 2 protect alex from himself. he nearly made love 2 her on multiple occasions but was suitably interrupted. i found the story really endearing. yet i'm apprehensive of their HEA bcoz i dunt think alex has grown up yet. she displays a large degree of immaturity n i'm sure the marriage will face lots of downs n she will not be satisfied wid married life so easily. she had her wings clipped 4 too long. she's like a bird just set free n got her 1st taste of sexual awareness through jason. the oldies usually set an example of a much older H than h. in this one, it does not bode well 4 their future. he's too old 4 her n by her reckless ways, i dare say in 10years time, she will be bored wid him. oh 4 god's sake, he's 20 years her senior!!
Good potential at the beginning, but it got boring, really boring …. Just in case anyone was wondering there is not sex scenes in this book, maybe due to the h age (17)
Gidget goes manipulative as a nubile, recently orphaned teenage girl schemes outrageously to become the ward of a standard issue leading man. Staying true to the Harlequin Presents formula, our “hero” engages in some inappropriate behavior with his underaged charge and seems constantly irritated with her… because he loves her. Natch!
Actually this had the potential to become a fun (and not eye-rollingly icky) romance as the South American setting could’ve allowed the dowdy governess, Miss Holland, to blossom and catch the eye of the leading man while the heroine, Alex, would have been better suited to the age-appropriate Manuel.
I find Anne Mather's romances like this one disturbing. They are definitely in the unethical category. And leave a bad after taste, even if the romantic content is OK to read.
The premise of a 36 year old man falling for his 17 year old ward is attempted by other authors too. But this one makes the relationship too physical and unpalatable.
The girl is a wilful brat. The guy is a push over.
The heroine is so bratty, immature and childish that this so-called romance was nauseating. I was hoping that the shameless Lolita would be killed off and he'd fall for the governess, but no such luck.
Adorei!!!
Alex yearned for freedom! Brought up in a French convent, Alex had been sadly neglected by her archaeologist father. He died leaving her starved for affection, desperate to love and be loved - desperate enough to trick her father's friend, Jason Tarrant, into becoming her guardian. Jason knew the dangerous involved in taking a beautiful young girl to his isolated South American ranch, but he couldn't resist her wistful appeal. And Alex soon discovered that she couldn't resist his disturbing male magnetism, or her own awakening desires.
Lonely, convent raised heroine (17) with father issues convinces new guardian (36, divorced) that he cannot live without her (her body) by tempting him at every opportunity whilst living on his South American ranch. She is very dumb, but earnest and driven, and he gives in pretty quickly every time she leans into him. I think there is a lot of chemistry, and she'll probably be happy as he feels that he's lucky to have her and give her everything she never had (and lots of sex which is what she wants).
Good potential at the beginning, but it got boring, really boring …. Just in case anyone was wondering there is not sex scenes in this book, maybe due to the h age (17) .
