Zachariah Williams isn’t just the darkest, most gothically gorgeous member of my new academy monster hunting squad…he’s broken in a way I deeply understand. The son of a small-town preacher with a big-time skillset, he’s faced down monsters his whole life, a natural-born demon hunter whose deep empathy and shattered soul makes me crave his glance, his smile, and, okay…his hands all over me.
Trouble is, he’s also got one killer of a family secret: right after he falls in love, Hell on earth breaks out. The only way to stop it? Sacrifice whoever’s captured his heart.
Talk about a second-date buzzkill.
Of course, I haven’t been fighting monsters practically since the cradle to back down now. Zach and the entire Wellington Academy monster hunter squad are becoming my stand-in family, and that means more to me than I ever expected.
And if someone’s gotta take out a bunch of fire-breathing demons without getting hot under the collar, I’m still the right girl for the job.
**THE HUNTER'S CURSE is book 2 in the Monster Hunter Academy series, a slow-burn urban fantasy romance with a fast-talking, sharp-witted heroine, four hunters-in-training hot enough to make your palms sweat, and way too many monsters to hide in a closet. Keep your blades at the ready and dive in!**
D.D. Chance’s The Hunter’s Curse is book 2 in the authors Monster Academy Series. The series features Nina Cross, a 24-year-old woman who traveled to Boston from her home in Asheville, North Carolina to find out if she has any family left. Nina is a virtual monster magnet. They follow her wherever she goes. She's found herself as a student at Wellington Academy where demon hunting is considered a minor degree, and the leader of the school is a real loser.
“The Hunter’s Curse”, the second installment in D.D. Chance the “Monster Hunter Academy” by D.D. Chance, a UF academy paranormal romance series whose FMC (Nina Cross) is a young woman with a proven tendency to attract monsters wherever she goes, and the “Wellington Academy” is surely not exception, so let us just call it… ‘Monster Academy’ 😉 but it has the added bonus of four very appealing hunters-in-training. “Monster Hunter Academy” is fun, witty, populated with hunters, monsters, inscrutable teachers and... monsters, because going to school, does not turns Nina’s magnet out, it just makes things a little complexer. And then, there is ‘the boys’ (Tyler, Liam, Frost, Zach), who make sure that Nina doesn’t get a break 😊
After dealing with the leader of the squad (Tyler Perkins) in the previous book, Nina has anew in trouble, one she loves to be in by the way, a devilish, dark, goth kind of trouble called Zachariah Williams. An empathic preacher’s son 😉 he is more than accustomed to face monsters on a daily basis, but the experience has taken its toll and let an aura of mystery, grief, and darkness. Nina knows she shouldn’t, after all Tyler is her guy, but she cannot help it.
Zach cannot help it either and he really knows he has to, because he doesn’t need to read minds (yes, he can!) to see that any approach can have deadly consequences, no not hyperbole, deadly as in decease, gone, cold… you get the gist. Mind you, fate has other plans, Nina and Zach attraction can be the catalyst that can exorcise Zach demons and get Nina a step nearer to her mom family.
A very well written and interesting story, that has it all; adventure in spades, romance, very carefully done steamy moments, and above all very good drafted characters. Nina is sassy, witty, intense even angry in some situation, using her rough angles as an armor to protect her soft nature, with a wonderful dry-humored intern dialogue, that could be confounded with cynicism by a passing observer. The interaction between Nina and any/all of the guys, are credible, enjoyable, and fun. The plot develops nicely with enough twists and unexpected turns to keep the reader invested from start to finish and already looking forward to the next installment. I have been following D.D. Chance and all her alter egos from Vegas to Boston, and all around the world, and still keep asking myself, how does she do it? More, more, more
And...she's done it again. We're back in the world of Boston's paranormal population and the academies that train those with supernatural/paranormal capabilities. In the Monster Hunter Academy, they have begun spreading out the subjects being taught, relegating the monster hunters to the "poor relations" table. But this is the speciality that is needed the most right now.
Zachariah Williams, the groups answer to goth, and the only one capable of reading minds has much to learn and has no problem admitting that. Nina scares him, but the reasons for that are not what you would think. All he knows for certain is if he grows to care for her, she dies. So why is he suddenly drawn to her?
Nina has been feeling the unwanted attraction to Zach for a while now and is completely thrown by it. She belongs to Tyler, so why is she thinking about another guy? That is so morally wrong...right? Truth is, she's become very uncertain about everything. Feelings are interfering with her academic endeavors towards becoming an expert monster hunter. The darn things just keep getting in the way.
Zach's family has its own special brand of crazy they have to deal with, and this time the whole school ends up involved. And Nina is destined to be the one to help him fight his demons. So, the Collective grows, tightening its bonds, and Nina may never find out about her mother's family.
DD Chance has done it again, bringing us a fast-paced, exciting Academy series that has sucked me in and has me already on the edge of my seat waiting for the next one. I love the way she builds it up, higher and higher with each book. The suspense within each book, and with each character's background bringing something new to the mix there's no way this series will ever be boring.
So Excellently Done, DD Chance (my favorite author for academy books...and tarot reads :-D) So Excellently Done Indeed! I love how this series is shaping up, and as usual, I'm anxious for the next one already!
This was given to me as an advanced reader's copy asking only for an honest review. This review is in my own words and given of my own volition, as always.
Nina is still finding her footing in this Collective, her group of guys. It was Zach’s book, meaning he was the next to bond with her. The focal point of this book was to eliminate the curse on Zach’s bloodline. A loved one would have to sacrifice themselves to save the rest of the family until the next generations loved one would sacrifice themselves again and again. We only got one point of view from Zach, at the beginning of the book like the previous one. Zach tried to push Nina away several times without telling her about the curse, but that ship saled after they kissed. Going to Zach’s house from a Summons that came in, she could borrow his power, seeing and hearing ghosts. That’s when Zach’s father demanded he solve who is trying to undermine their bloodline by the series of arracks on the family. It was eye opening and a little heartbreaking to read a 6 year old growing up with such a scary power at that age. Nina is perfect for him, she pushes gently at the right times and Zach just wanted to be with her without the curse. I’m so glad they killed the Demon who cursed them. I can just imagine the sigh of relief his dad felt. I wish we got to read that conversation instead of them just mentioning it happened. I believe Liam will be the next man Nina bonds with. I don’t feel I know as much about him as I do the other 3. Grim stands out due to his abrasive personality. Arseholes like Grim are always last according to Jennifer Chances series. It should be good though, because the arsehole in question has been written tough, gruff and rough, non committal, independant, quiet and extremely smart. He isn’t exactly welcoming but he’s not rude either. Out of all the guys, his point of views would be the most welcome. I don’t know much about his background as well, if it was said somewhere in the book, I don’t remember it. Either way, I look forward to reading the next book.
The Hunter's Curse is the second book in The Monster Academy Series and we find Nina still adjusting to being part of the collective with the four guys. This book’s focus is on Zach and Nina and we learn a lot more about Zach's childhood as the son of a demon hunting Reverend. He and Nina are kindred spirits since the both grew up fighting their respective monsters, but he’s reluctant to get close to her because of a family curse. Their story begins with a demon demonstration that goes awry and as the demons get more aggressive it's up to the collective to defeat them.
I enjoyed this story, we learned a lot about Zach, but it's obvious that there's a lot going on behind the scenes that will play out in future books. We still don't know much about Nina's mom's history, but there's indication that we will learn more in the next story. There's also something going on with the local magical community as well, but we get only hints in this book. I'm really enjoying the series and am looking forward to the next story.
Finally, I received an ARC of the book and am voluntarily leaving this review. It in no way influenced my opinion.
The 2nd book in the series picks up in full swing with Zach the next in the quint to come into sharp focus. Demons have literally haunted Zach most of his life and Nina could be his savior or downfall. This is personal but Zach will not have to battle alone.
The team learns more of what true bounding brings and school politics come into play; major, minor, minnie moe should Monster Hunters stay or go? The character building continues with more background and entanglements to keep the story flowing and entertaining.
While the premise is laid out clearly in the first book the growth of the story as the series progresses keeps me wanting more. Oh yeah this is adult oriented fantasy at it’s best! Too bad I have to wait patiently, well impatiently, for the next installment!
The Hunter's Curse is book 2 in the Monster Hunter Academy series by D.D. Chance, following on from The Hunter's Call and taking up pretty much where the last book stopped. The monsters are still more active than usual and this time we have demons too. As the story progresses, the tension amps up and the team have plenty to overcome, including demon infestations, Zach's curse, and academy politics. Nina learns her role in the collective, and the team find support in unexpected places.
This is a really entertaining book, which I was looking forward to, and that exceeded my expectations. I can't wait for book 3 now. I highly recommend this series.
“The Hunter’s Curse” is D.D.’s second book in this series. Nina and the Monster Hunter Academy are facing dire times. New monsters are attacking from the outside and unknow forces from the inside. Nina must now step up and face this onslaught. She aligns herself with the member of her collection, Zach, who is predestined to face this incursion. D.D. weaves a tale full of suspense. Nina must grow to the challenge and Zach must withstand and defeat the curse which fell upon is family generations ago. The characters in this story grow in intensity and depth. D.D. transfixes her readers with a story that begs not to be ended.
In this second book Nora Cross finds herself inexplicably drawn to team member Zach Williams despite being uncomfortable with his capability to read minds, and, it turns out, fight demons. And he so wants to return the heat though knowing to do so could bring her death because of a family curse. A little more background into this preacher's son from the south is revealed and the team unites to fight a new sort of challenge to their existence and that of the Academy. Nora also learns more about what her position brings to the Collective. Another good read from D.D.Chance. Looking forward to the next book.
Picking up right where book 1 left off, this time the story is focused on the dynamic between Nina and Zach and we also get a bit more of the back story into Nina and her family. Whilst we had Monster mayhem in book 1, now we get to add Demon's to the mix and a curse that threatens the relationship. Can they all team together to fight the demons, break the curse and also unravel the growing relationship between each other? you'll have to read to find out! This books hits the ground running, sees some good actions has some breath-taking romantic build up and ends with a bang. Really looking forward to book 3.
I was excited to get to dive into Book 2 of the Monster Hunter Academy Series. I was not disappointed with Zachariah's story. We got to see what makes him tick, and how well he pairs with our Heroine. I am really enjoying watching the dynamic unfold with the Collective. I am interested to find out more about Nina's family. I am expecting a big line to pop up there! Maybe one that crosses over with Twyst? I am thoroughly enjoying this Series!
I am sharing an honest review of the ARC I received.
I love paranormal reverse harems and this one hits all the right marks for me. Courageous powerful flawed heroine and flawed powerful men, how can you go wrong? As always, I enjoy each book's focus on the relationship growth between the heroine with one of her guys. If you want a series with the perfect blend of action and love, this series is the one for you. I would label it as a slow burn and that works for me. I look forward to the next (two?) books in the series. As always a 5 star is reserved for those books I plan to enjoy for future re-reads.
I am thoroughly enjoying learning more about Nina and Zach in this continuing story of the Monster Hunter Academy series. Zach both interested me - son of a preacher, demon magnet, mind reader - and repelled me - Nina must die - so I was particularly curious to see where this book took us. I have to say, it didn't disappoint! Learning more about Nina as a harbinger, too, and how the other guys in her collective interact - it's a hot, wild ride! Grab it, you'll enjoy it!
This is a great series and I am enjoying the journey.
Zach is an interesting character and I enjoyed getting to know him better. The dynamic between them was intriguing and the chemistry intense.
I am enjoying the direction the story is going. There is still a lot of mysteries to solve and I look forward to seeing how it all ties together and the other relationships build.
Zach has known of his families curse but has never shared it with his collective. As he and Nina grow closer, demons arise and try to claim their sacrifice. Forces work in the shadows and the collective fights a many fronted battle that shows no signs of ending and risks the destruction of Wellington Academy. Non stop action, a tentative new romance with side effects and more secrets found than answers. Can’t wait for book 3!
Book 2 of the Monster Hunter Academy focuses on Zach and Nina. The book picks up right after book 1 and is just as imaginative. I love the way the story is progressing and cannot wait until we find out who is Nina’s family and why she was hidden with her mother all her life. The team is growing stronger and they find out a little more about what it means to the group by bringing Nina into the fold. I definitely recommend this book as well as the Twyst Academy series.
D. D. Chance's second installment of the Monster Academy Series sizzles as much as the first book. It takes a new angle and develops the characters more fully, giving a more in-depth insight into what makes up Nina Cross' world and loves. This book is full of action, heat, and just plain good old gotta love to read it vibes.
A roller-coater of a ride, both in terms of adventure and romantically! A really excellent sequel to book 1 of the Wellington Academy - Hunters Call. I love the way the author weaves her web of mystery, monsters and intrigue with odd twists and turns that keep you wanting more! This truly is THE BEST YET, and so much fun to read! I am waiting for book 3 with bated breath!
Oh man I loved Zach and could definitely feel the anguish of his curse. Talk about your own literal demons. My interest is piqued with the interruption of some of the magical elite families getting involved and what their engage. Magical? ✅ Monsters? ✅ Mystery? ✅✅✅ I can’t wait for Liam’s book!
I was looking forward to this second book in the series, and it didn’t disappoint. I’m always a fan of a strong female lead character and I really enjoyed how Zach”s character unfolded. I didn’t think I’d love him as much as I did Tyler (for the first book in the series) but I was definitely proved wrong. This book was perfect escapism and I can’t wait to read the third.
A page turner of a mystery that leaves you wishing for more. The Monster Hunters Academy book 2 is filled with action, magic, monsters and....scars. So much mystery, Grim, Liam, Janet, something lurking in the future. Shivers, I tell ya. Shivers. Recommend highly, great writing.
This new installment from D.D. Chance was packed with action and romance and left this reader eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Nina and Zach’s journey was a treat to experience as it was heartfelt and intense. Excellent read!
I cannot get enough of the monster books! I’m completely drawn in and just loving this venture into paranormal that I haven’t seen from other authors. Well written and captivating. Can’t wait for the next one.
An exciting follow up to the Hunter's Call! Always a creative blend of the traditional supernatural with new and unique ideas connecting them to the modern world. Funny, relatable and fantastical that offers a fun break from adulting. I highly recommend this book and this series.
A great continuation from the first book. Full of action, adventure, surprises and demon fighting. More things are exposed in this story about everything and some puzzle pieces are finally fitting together. Cannot wait for the next one.
I really like this author and always look out for her new books. I can happily report that this book did not disappoint. This instalment has it all, romance, hot guys, adventure and strong well written characters.
Nina and her crew were trying to save all of the students, who was going to save them? There's always a new bunch of monsters and demons and there is only 4 of them. What will it take to save them and their school?
A great book. The second in the series. It tells the story between NIna and Zack. How the power of working together breaks the curse that has haunted Zack's family for many years.
This book continues the series right where it left off. It was just as awesome as the first if not better. I love the group changes that occurred and I can't wait to see what's next.
This was a great continuation of the Monster Hunter Academy with a great story with plenty of surprises, action and fighting demons. I cannot wait to read the next book and see what will happen next.
