Trauma doesn’t discriminate. It can happen to anyone, anytime. And in all likelihood, Covid-19 has traumatized each and every one of us to some degree. Everybody hits a low point once in a while, and ultimately, the quality of our lives depends on our ability to process heartbreaks and catastrophes successfully. So how do we do that?

In Post-Traumatic The Art, Science & Stories of Resilience, world-renowned expert on disasters and trauma Dr. Randall Bell interweaves science and academic research with stories of people who have not just survived, but have used their trauma as their fuel to thrive.

Dr. Bell sits down with many survivors,

Holocaust survivors. Families of murder victims. Crime victims. Suicide survivors. And those who’ve experienced homelessness, disasters, addictions, depression, death, divorce, disabilities, defeats, and disease. Dr. Bell seeks to explore the rare mindset of the post-traumatic thriver.

Post traumatic thriving

The good
A lot of information on how to deal with trauma of all types: battle, personal loss, disaster, crimes, etc. Mr. Bell does an excellent job in laying out different techniques in dealing with each individual’s type of trauma. There is no clear-cut cookie-cutter resolution for all. The most effective technique is breathing exercises and taking ten to fifteen minutes out of each day, especially in the morning to clear your mind and prepare for the day. I whole heartedly support those techniques as I used to apply them daily. Amazing how clear the mind is when you turn off the tube and the social media noise and focus on yourself.

The in between
In most of the chapters and sub-sections, he highly encourages the reader to seek out professional help. While that is a good and sound idea, what of those that don’t have the resources to pay these professionals for we all know, they aren’t cheap. Perhaps a little more insight could be provided.

The bad
1) I understand the refresher the reader is given at the end of each chapter chronicling the paths of the eleven patients he treated along with himself. I enjoyed how they were inter connected with the topic, but at times, it became over-bearing in the constant recap of their lives and his.
2) This book has three editors listed. Well, they need to go back to he drawing board, that also includes whoever, loaded up this work. The copy editor was poor at best. I identified over twenty unique issues: spelling, missing words and a host of words run together making reading a chore at times.

Overall, I’m always looking to improve and learn from those who have run the race, for that, I’m thankful. But when the topic is not presented in a clean and crisp manner, it dilutes the points being mad and has the reader wondering, if one is such an expert, why didn’t they take the time to put together an error free work?

Three and-a-half stars.

My husband and I sat down last night and watched A Man Called Otto and we both had a rather strong reaction to the movie which speaks to trauma and healing.

I recognize many of us have faced traumas and we may all handle them differently. Some of us may appear to sail through them while others revisit the emotions of trauma. I can only stress in these circumstances self-care is extremely important and part of self-care is reaching out and seeking help to process.

Recently, I have been reading the book Post-Traumatic Thriving by Dr, Randall Bell whose nickname is “The Master of Disaster”.

Dr. Bell analyzes a thrivers mindset and tells us, “This is a life skill we all need because, by college age, 66 to 85 percent of us have been impacted by a trauma.”

In this read, Dr. Bell weaves science and academic research with true stories from survivors of the Holocaust, crime, disasters, addictions, depression, death, and other tragedies to explore the rare thriver’s mindset and proven healing strategies.

I received a copy of this book from Catherine Kennedy, Senior Publicist, Ascot Media Group, Inc.

Randall Bell has written an information book with his release of Post Traumatic Thriving: The Art, Science, & Stories of Resilience. As someone who has experienced trauma myself, I was looking forward to reading this book. It was interesting to read other people’s stories and learning about their healing. Though it was inspiring to read their stories, it could be a little repetitive and excessive at times and found myself wanting to skim over them and move past them. The author gives some helpful ways to thrive and learn the power of healing. There were variety of graphics that helped me to get a visual as to what the author is trying to convey in his writing. It was not an easy read for me as there were sections that were triggering for me and I had to take my time reading it all thoroughly. Overall, I thought it was a great book to read and found it to be very helpful to me.

I am giving Post Traumatic Thriving: The Art, Science, & Stories of Resilience four stars. I recommend it for readers who have experienced trauma in their lives and looking for a way to heal.

I received a hard cover copy of Post Traumatic Thriving: The Art, Science, & Stories of Resilience from the publisher, but was not required to write a review, nor a positive one. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
