This is book nine of the Kitten Witch Cozy Mystery series and sees tavern owner and witch Ember McNair suddenly dragged into another dimension by her younger sister Ash, who is a little high on some deadly mushrooms after being held captive in Ember’s last case. Ash has led them to this dimension, telling Ember that this is where Ember’s husband Cedric’s lost memories have been hidden. Cedric is a werewolf shifter, but also their town sheriff, and has been left with big gaps in his memory after all his memories of Ember were taken from him and he doesn’t even remember marrying her, which has been making their relationship very difficult over the last few weeks since it happened. This strange dimension they have dropped into, has hordes of dragons attacking them from above and then a group of human looking soldiers come to their aid. The officer in charge leads them towards an odd looking settlement in the midst of a deserted looking plain and told to go meet the mayor of this strange looking town. Just before they get to the town itself, a trio of men accost them and ask for their entry fee! The lead man introduces himself as D.B. Cooper, the bank robber who jumped out of an aeroplane and who was never found and neither was the money he took.
This is an introduction to the sort of people they are going to meet in this town of refugees, from all times and places around the world. They meet Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid next, who come to their aid and tell D.B. Cooper and his henchmen to leave the ladies alone. The town is named Driftwood and is full of famous people who just disappeared from their last known locations on Earth and their places in history. They come across the town’s mayor who is Amelia Earhart, Jimmy Hoffa the mob boss who now runs the still with D.B., and even Emperor Romulus the First and his modern day soldiers. But being Ember, death always seems to happen around her and the two are accused of the murder of D.B. Cooper, who has just been found with a Roman style sword in his back! Since Ember and Ash are the latest newcomers, they became the easiest suspects for the murder! When news of a large dog is commented on, in the growing fields just outside town, Ember reckons she knows who it may be. It turns out the portal to this dimension also pulled in Cedric, April the young girl they are fostering, and Ember’s familiar Kali.
The group need to solve the murder in this odd town, if they have any hope of following Ash’s lead to Cedric’s memories, before they lose the connection. Their investigation is suddenly waylaid when a mob turns up at the doors of the latest suspect they are questioning, with a man leading them and inciting them to carry out frontier style justice on the two women. It seems that this dimension is giving them more than just a normal murder to solve, with dragons, really strong magical lay lines which are affecting all of them in some strange ways, sudden and dangerous magical storms and now political shenanigans in a power struggle in the town. Never mind having to leave April in the care of someone in the town, as they have to escape the mob, but at least she has the demon Munkilok to keep her safe, however extremely he may react to the situation. A journey will soon be needed to find an escaped suspect and the witness to the murder, bringing about more surprises in this strange dimension. One of the town’s people will end up taking them across the huge sea, to the place of Cedric’s memories, but nothing ever goes as smoothly as expected and the story ends in yet another cliffhanger. A wild mixture of odd characters taken from history and some you may not even know about, in a wild west frontier town, where barter is the only way to live and food is basic. Strange tale, far disassociated from the previous storyline, and a bit off the charts in terms of reality or fantasy. An odd read, with a murder and a fair bit of magic. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
Ember McNair is a witch recently married to Sheriff Cedric Jamison, a wolf shifter who can no longer remember his wife. Now she is trying to find her amnesiac husband’s missing memories as Ember and her sister Ash enter the dimension where Aetrix hid Cedric’s memories. Ash also has a divining rod that should lead them straight to Cedric’s memories. But dragons were coming toward them and there was no place to hide. Ash and Ember joined hands and combined their power to get rid of the dragons. Power surged into them from the abundant ley lines. But there were still a dozen remaining and they came after Ember and Ash again. Then soldiers arrived and shot down a couple more and walked them to Driftwood.
Here they find a large assortment of missing people who vanished from Earth and could not return, many of them familiar names. The frontier town of Driftwood, the settlement made by the people who wind up there through no fault of their own, isn’t always welcoming and they have some crazy adventures. Thank goodness they have the talisman necklace when they are ready to go home.
When D. B. Cooper (yes, that one) is killed, Ember and Ash become suspects and must solve the murder mystery to clear their name if they have any hope of completing their quest. Can they do this in a timely manner and also find Cedric’s missing memories? Will they be able to get back home, assuming the talisman works as it is supposed to?
This was a fun approach to the story, very clever and satisfying as it sparked recognition in the reader of who the various people were. Grab your copy and see if our sleuths are successful with their quest and can return Cedric’s memories. Or will they perhaps be trapped in Driftwood forever?
Since the first one having read by this author, good go to for a mystery. Ember is still looking to retrieve the memories of the hubby among other things. Her sister Ash is helping with us being the recipients of this goody. What they come across is a biggie with Driftwood in the picture also. Oh does this have character pun the word. Who is in here makes for interesting escapades to follow. They also have to clear their names but not the norm happening in here of course. Oh what a story this was with the ones in here that made for some hilarious reading for me since I knew whom half of them were. outside of the book realm.
This book immediately starts where PERILOUS PAWS ends, so if you have not read that book yet, please read that first. The book begins with Ash taking Ember to a dimension, where she believes, Cedric's stolen memories are hidden. After an attack by dragons they are taken to a town called Driftwood, where people live, who have been sucked into this dimension by accident. Just after they have arrived there is a murder and people believe Ember and Ash are the killers. An unusual setting, the usual murder investigation. An interesting story, familiar, but with a new twist. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Ember and Ash were sucked into the dimension that Cedric’s memories were stached. Were attacked by creatures but an army saved them, then someone tried to take their stuff that was with them. Cedric, April and Kali were sucked into the portal also. They had to solve a murder before they could go back home with the memories and they made it back with the killer from the other dimension. Hopefully they get the memories back into Cedric. Great book but any book by Corrine Winters is definitely worth reading!
Extraordinarily entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series
This is an extraordinarily entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters with a unique and entertaining storyline. Amber is a witch who owns a little pub in a small town in Louisiana. Her husband is a wolf shifter and a local sheriff. Her best friend is a bat shifter and she recently was reunited with her sister. After the wedding I’ll hell broke loose in the story goes out of this world. Read on and find out what happens.
This was such a unique way of explaining where people go when they disappear on Earth. It’s crazy how even in another dimension Ember still has to investigate a murder before she can go looking for Cedric’s memories. So many obstacles to overcome! This was a fun and exciting journey to go on with Ember and the gang.

Ember is back a it again with a new adventure. With the help of her sister Ash she sets of into another dimension to find her husbands memories. There they find many things from missing people to creatures an accusations of murder. As always her stories keep you wondering till the end. Ash, Ember's sister has found where Cedric's memories are hidden and the duo take their chances, stepping through the portal into a different dimension to look for them. They didn't bargain for Cedric, Kali and April to be sucked in through the vortex as well, into a strange new world.
A bit different from the previous offerings from Winters, but a credit to the imagination of the author. This brave new world is inhabited by people who have disappeared from our world over time; who live and create a township, with governance and laws. Interesting idea! Good read , which leaves you wanting more as it ends on a cliff hanger
