“There is no essscape… the harvessst will be bountiful. The harvessst will be pure.”

There is nothing better than a strange planet where the dark side is running rampant when things are already a bit on the alarming side. This was, naturally, incredibly fun and slightly more enlightening than the previous issues had been.

Sskeer is one of my favorite aspects of this particular part of the story for all that he represents as a Trandoshan Jedi and the trauma that he went through, and has yet to disappoint me in any way. He is complicated and that is wonderful.

Aside from that, the mystery of the planet is intriguing and far more far-reaching than anything I was expecting it to turn out to be.

One of the best parts has to be the fact that we get to see the amazing Avar Kriss in action. That has gotta be one of the best moments for me so far in this collection of stories that form The High Republic Era. Only made better because she was alongside Keev Trennis who is fast becoming another favorite.

Things were definitely left of in a sensitive and heart-stopping cliffhanger that will be cool to get to see deeper next time.

“Usually I’d go to the masters, but the masters… well, they’re occupied… so I guess it’s up to me.”

Oooh, this is INTENSE in all its forms and I'm loving and living for it with all I can.

Can I just say that Avar Kriss is the ultimate badass? I'm so in love with her.

This issue is both fantastic and slightly horrifying. The Bacta storyline is taking a step back to shine light on the immanent danger of the Drengir, and the shift from action to horror elements is executed nicely. The new side characters aren't particularly interesing and only appear to fulfill their role as informants but that doesn't change the fact that this issue is extremely exciting and makes me want to know more!

If you have been thirsting for a comic that is the intersection of horror and Star Wars, the current plotline in Star Wars: The High Republic is exactly that. Sure, we’ve seen allusions to horror in the past, but there is something downright terrifying about Terec’s worsening condition. Paired with stories about missing children among cornfield-like fauna (Vratixian Barley), the ominous feelings are all there. READ MORE: https://yourmoneygeek.com/review-star...

For anyone who has read my past reviews about the new-released High Republic novels (or anyone who follows me on Twitter) then you will know my somewhat controversial opinions about the colonialism undertones being employed in the characterization of the Jedi, the Republic, and the Nihil in The High Republic era. These subtle allusions, whether intentional or unintended, come back into play yet again in “Down Below” and I’m going to talk about them again at the end of this review.

While Avar Kriss and Sskeer discuss Terec’s declining condition, Keeve sets out to investigate rumors of local children going missing. She is accompanied by Bartol, a local child, who is looking for his missing friend. I loved the way Keeve reflected on her journey and her experience as a Jedi. It’s refreshing to see characters who have internalized conflict.

The pair discover a sinkhole and something even more sinister during their investigation. Keeve and Bartol stumble into the clutches of the terrifying Drengir that have Killed Bartol’s friend Julus and nearly killed Ceret, who is slowly succumbing to the sentient and carnivorous plant.

While Avar Kriss believes that Terec succumbed to the lure of the Dark Side, Sskeer learns the hard way that Terec has actually been taken over by the Drengir. Star Wars: The High Republic ends on an ominous panel revealing that Sskeer may have been taken over by the Drengir.

Now onto the colonizer allusions utilized in the comic. At the start of the issue, Zeeve is greeted by Sedri Minor’s locals who have arrived to greet the Jedi with offerings of food (it’s mostly just a lot of bread) which, as a historian, evoked a lot of historical imagery. While some inhabitants seem excited about the Jedi’s arrival, others seem resistant to the idea of them getting involved with their local issues.

Back aboard the ship, Avar Kriss is greeted with some hostility from Speaker Sulman. The exchange was quite illuminating about how the two groups view themselves. The Jedi see themselves as protectors and residents see them as unwanted visitors that can’t even keep track of their own. This tells me that when the Jedi arrive on a new planet, they haven’t been invited by the locals, but have invited themselves to “do good works.” I think it’s a fascinating angle to approach these stories and I’m excited to see where these threads go as we see more of The High Republic.

On the farming planet of Sedri Minor, an ancient evil life form called the Drengir has steadily been growing. Its use of the Dark Side of the Force has called Jedi master Sskeer to the planet. His initiate, Keeve, stumbles upon Drengir’s lair, where the creature has been kidnapping farmers for food. Master Sskeer is under the mind control of the creature.

Big green plant-monsters proliferate plentifully in this, the third issue of the Star Wars: High Republic comic book series. I am enjoying this series profusely.

This comic was ok. In this issue we meet the Drengir which made their debut in the Claudia Grey YA novel, Into the Dark. The real issue I have is the with this new pronoun thing going on with some of the characters. The twin Jedi characters are each referred to as a they. It’s confusing because these twins have a telepathic connection and each one is referred to in the plural... this is the nonsense that makes me not enjoy current Star Wars material.

This installment in Cavan Scott's ongoing high republic series was very good. As the issues release they have consistently gotten better and better, with this one being the best so far.

I'm still not a fan of Keeve Trennis's internal monologues and that takes away from my enjoyment of her character- but in this one the extent of that lost enjoyment isn't quite as much, and there was even a moment where I thought the monologuing was framed well- actually used to convey information that couldn't have been easily conveyed through visuals alone.

Stay tuned as I do quickie reviews for the individual issues as they release, and I will do a more detailed review of this comic when issue #6 is released.

NICE!

This series is incredible, with all the awesomeness of the first two issues now we get horror elements to the story (i'm not a fan of horror but but i like how they implemented it in the story). A mysterious planet with a mysterious threat linked to the dark side, oh boy!

Sskeer is still the one character in this new era that i really like, but Trennis is growing on me. She's super cool, strong and intenligent. I also like her hair style.

Overall, superb series so far, each issue better than the previous one.

Another dive into the practices of the High Republic by the one and only Cavan Scott. Heroism, insight, and darkness. I don't know how we are supposed to wait for the next one after this...

Okay, I am done. Three issues in and this series has yet to rise above "bleh". I hope the High Republic books are better than the comic series.

Its still way too meh for my taste.
Its not insulting, dumb or anything, its just... dunno, the characters are boring and the story, so far, feels like a fan fiction. I know its Star Wars, but it doesnt feel like it.

Issue #3 of The High Republic delivers one of the series’ most pivotal turns as the true threat lurking in the shadows finally reveals itself: the Drengir. These dark-side-fueled, sentient plant creatures emerge from myth into terrifying reality, and the result is an issue that’s part Jedi mystery, part Lovecraftian horror—and fully engaging.

Keeve Trennis continues to grow as a central character. Her courage, intuition, and empathy are put to the test as she confronts not just physical threats, but moral uncertainty—particularly regarding her former Master, Sskeer. His increasingly unstable behavior reaches a breaking point here, culminating in a jaw-dropping final page where Sskeer appears to lose control in a brutal and unexpected way.

Cavan Scott continues to write Jedi in a way that humanizes them without undermining their mythic role. Keeve’s uncertainty, Avar Kriss’s leadership, and Sskeer’s pain all serve to show the Jedi as complex and fallible—making their struggles far more compelling. There’s a real sense of tension as the characters confront something they don’t fully understand, and the slow unveiling of the Drengir creates a mood that’s more horror-thriller than typical Star Wars fare.

The dialogue remains crisp, with moments of humor, warmth, and fear woven naturally into the action. Keeve’s inner monologue continues to be a highlight, grounding the cosmic-scale story in personal stakes.

Artist Ario Anindito, along with inker Mark Morales and colorist Annalisa Leoni, absolutely delivers on the horror aesthetic. The Drengir are grotesque and otherworldly, their twisted vines and gaping maws contrasting beautifully with the luminous Jedi and clean architecture. The layout choices heighten the suspense, especially during the slow build toward the creature’s reveal.

Verdict:
The High Republic #3 raises the stakes with the full introduction of the Drengir and deepens the emotional complexity of the Jedi facing them. It’s a standout issue in the arc—atmospheric, character-driven, and bold in its horror-tinged tone. With Keeve Trennis continuing to prove herself as a standout new Jedi, the series solidifies its place as essential High Republic storytelling.

”It’s not supposed to be like this. I’m a Jedi Knight. I’m supposed to help. I’m supposed to know what to do. And yet I’m out here standing guard while my former Master loses his mind…”

Another wonderful issue! Ceret has gone mysteriously missing, and the rest of the Jedi, including Masters Sskeer and Avar Kriss, and Knights Keeve and Terec, are doing their best to find their friend, and investigate the dark, terrifying threat that is lurking on Sedris Minor.

I'm loving the direction this story is going and how it's incorporating aspects from the novels (in this issue there are some heavy connections to Into the Dark) and exploring them further. The characters continue to be engaging - I'm especially fond of Keeve (I loved her team up with the little kid, Bartol, in this issue and seeing her interact with a non-Jedi character, trying her best to remain calm and supportive and someone the kid can rely on, despite her own doubts about herself and her skills) and Avar Kriss. Sskeer continues to be a mystery, and I can't wait to see where the story takes him. This issue definitely ended with a bang for his character - I need the next issue, now! I also loved the creepy vibes and horror elements of this issue - the threat the Jedi are investigating is very cool and the atmosphere of the spooky moments were on point.

So, yeah, really enjoyed this chapter of this story! Can't wait for the fourth issue next month!

I'm really enjoying the creeping sense of doom and horror in this comic.

The introduction of the Drengir, a species of sentient, carnivorous plants, provides a threat unlike anything we've ever seen in Star Wars before (although, I'm sure if I scoured Wookiepedia I'd find that the Drengir aren't the first sentient, carnivorous plants in the Star Wars universe). They seem to have some kind of connection with the Dark Side of the Force and an ability to possess Jedi. It's creepy stuff.

I'm currently reading Light of the Jedi, so it's a bit weird reading about some of the Jedi in that novel at a later point on the timeline when I haven't finished reading it yet. Do other people really read so quickly that they've finished all the other High Republic books already? I haven't even got a copy of High Republic Adventures yet (I've ordered one, it just hasn't arrived...because it's not actually available in the UK). Anyway, that's not really relevant to this review...

I think I'm enjoying this more than anything else I've read by Cavan Scott so far, and the art, by Ario Anindito and Mark Morales is superb. The Marvel Star Wars comics continue to be a cut above the old Dark Horse comics, artistically speaking.

It's still early days for the High Republic but I'm very much enjoying what I've read so far!

What in the world am I reading? I don't like any of these characters, lol, none of them. This little kid Bartol seems to know more about the Jedi than Keeve. And are these Hydra-like Swamp thing monsters supposed to be scary of something? I love Star Wars and I'm a big fan of all the KOTOR Dark Horse stuff and because I liked the early core Star Wars/Vader stuff I read when Marvel took over in the beginning I assumed High Republic would be good as well but it's one of those cases where I wish I would have gotten around to reading the first issue before the following ones came out so I would have saved my money. 3 issues in and nothing I like about this so far, smh.

"I liked it." - 3 out of 5 star rating.

Outside of Light of the Jedi (amazing book), these comics might be the most enjoyable High Republic (HR) experience I've been exposed to thus far.

These comics are pretty good! Which for HR says a lot, as there are many books that are just hard misses for me. With that, mid-tier aka slightly above average HR content comes across as gold.

The situation continues to unfold for our heroes on this new alien world that have landed on, along with for me personally, the first introduction of the Drengir in visual form outside of my own mind. Super cool. They did a good job thus far.

Looking forward to what will happen next.

It's Coming Together

Here we have Issue # 3 by Cavan Scott and he is holding true to his method of story over agenda. The plot thickens as we explore this new world searching for a missing companion. Keeve has joined Sskeer and brought along Avar Kriss. The pieces are on the board and the game begins. The author does not disappoint, shoring up a few concerns from the previous issue while inspiring some fan theory at the same time. We're off and running and I hope the author keeps it up.

Now this is a 5 star issue. We see a dark mental battle with the dark side occuring here with our new Jedi protagonists and how some of them are stronger than others. I wonder if this lack of strength is from not having to normally face the dark side in this way? And the new enemy introduced while perhaps not being a large overall threat is in no way weak or uninteresting. This is only issue 3 and the plot is getting sufficiently thick!

That was good

I wasn't expecting that to happen at the end! Master Skeet is really having a hard time! You literally have to read Light of the Jedi to read any of the other books and comics to understand what's going on with certain characters!

Meh

It was meh. Interesting dark side opponent, I suppose. Less alien and more fantasy-ish. A shame the main commanding good guy is some blue eyed aryan looking white girl. At least the protagonist is interesting and diverse.

I enjoyed the horror vibe of Issue #3 even if the story is the smallest so far in terms of both complexity and scale. The Drengir is a bit of a generic antagonist that have potential but are just getting started here.
