Five years ago, my practice partner Dr. Amy Cianciolo and I started down the magical road of direct primary care (DPC) leading away from a frustrating and inadequate healthcare system. This model of care was the closest thing to achieving the healthcare quadruple aim of lowering costs, improving health, and increasing both patient and physician satisfaction. After a year or so, employers large and small started asking for our high access, low costs direct care. This book is the culmination of years of experience working with employers (small and large), the magic and the mistakes. The book is written from the DPC physician perspective and the DPC physician is the main focus to learn how to approach employers, work with them and their benefits advisors. In addition, there are specific sections for employers and benefits advisors to learn about DPC and how, together, all three groups can work to achieve some magic and miracles. Dr. Shane Purcell runs a Direct Primary Care medical practice in Andersen, SC. This book is about how DPC doctors can serve employers in their areas, adding many patients to their panels all at once. There are challenges, and Purcell walks you through them, using his hurdles, mistakes, and successes as a guide. I am an enormous advocate of DPC doctors, as I think they are the answer to the health care problems in this country. They restore the sacred doctor/patient relationship that has been corrupted by third party payers, such as employers, insurance companies, and government. DPC are the pioneers who will take the arrows, but they are growing in number--1700 practices across the USA--and the demand for them will continue to grow. Why? Because it allows the doctor to do what they became a physician to do--help people. Doing that unencumbered by third parties is the only way for our healthcare system to be truly patient-centric. Magic, indeed. Thank you, Dr. Purcell!

It's a great book for DPC doctors who want to work with employers and gives incredible insight into that process and where the pitfalls are. It does cover some basics about DPC but not a lot. It might be the title that threw me off - still a great read. I would give it a 5-star if the title was "How to negotiate DPC contracts employers" though I may likely not have read it since it wouldn't pertain to my own DPC practice.
