J.J. Green is a British-Australian science fiction author with a lifelong love of distant landscapes, intriguing cultures and fascinating places. She was born within the sound of the bells of Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside, London, making her a bona fide Cockney, and she lived in Australia, Laos and Taiwan before returning to the UK to settle down in Cambridge.

Green’s novels weave science-based speculation with richly personal stories. Her works explore themes of environmental degradation, political conflict, mythical resonance, human resilience, and the ethics of technology and expansion. Her characters—often strong women—navigate future worlds grounded in both scientific plausibility and mythic imagination.

Space Fantasy With Arthur, Merlin and Morgan now working with spacefarers to remove evil - 3.5 stars

A long and difficult to follow saga in which two space-faring groups (BA and EAC) have tried to deal with the remnants of the British Empire long after it collapsed.

The natives have a resistance group trying to survive without the space-faring groups and a queen-like "Dwyr". As the book progresses, people from King Arthur's time are liberated from stasis after more than 1000 years. Arthur is strong and heroic but speaks an old English that hasn't been spoken in at least 800 years. Merlin is an "alien". While Arthur seems to breathe, neither Merlin nor Morgan need food or air, which may explain how they could survive for hundreds of years. Arthur's chain mail is still useful after all the intervening centuries.

Relatively speaking, the BA troops slowly are the good guys and the EAC are the bad guys. The natives have learned to hate the British white supremacy rule, BA or EAC. The Dwyr is striving to embellish her power and control before the Arthurian era people appear.

I found it difficult to follow the story as different groups get focus.

The Space ships have some fancy technology like weapons that cause molecular disintegration as well as the old standbys of rail guns and beams. An unforgettable dark cloud associated with Merlin was able to stop space ships and incapacitate humans by overriding their thought processes.

This book is for fantasy enthusiasts and should have a special appeal to followers of the King Arthur legends. There were a few short interludes of people caring about each other. For the most part, the characters are fighting or just merely expressing hate; joy and happiness are rare. A BA commanding officer (Major Wright) and a marine (Taylan Ellis) are the only people who listen to each other in a burgeoning relationship.

The story is really growing!
I am loving this series with its unusual mix of science fiction and Arthurian legend. It seems like an odd juxtaposition but, somehow, it really works. For me, it speaks of a cyclical nature to the world where the problems we have created in our striving for technological advancement have damaged the world to an extent that it drives us backwards. An almost dystopian future where we have seriously impacted our environment and yet still retain some of the advances we have made whilst also forced to adopt some more basic survival methods.
Here, we are enveloped in a world where groups seek dominance largely through violence (as is and always has been the case with us humans) in a fight for both resources and minds. The different ideologies of the groups is really interesting and I love how they match so well with current ideologies, even if exaggerated.
'The Fearless' isn't a stand-alone. As with most of JJ Green's book series, you really do need to read in order so definitely grab book 1 first. You'd be a bit lost starting here although it's possible.
I read this book cover to cover in one morning-afternoon (lunch got forgotten) as I was totally absorbed in the story. I am never worried that JJ Green won't have mastered her characters as this is something that she always excels in. Every one of the main characters has a solid identity complete with understandable emotions and motivations. Because of this, it's easy to become invested in the outcomes.
I absolutely don't hesitate to recommend this book (and the Star Legend series in general). It's science fiction but it's new and different and, as a result, intriguing. I can't wait for Book 3.

I'm really enjoying this series so far!! We've got a few more familiar names as well as possible [redacted] 😅 at some point I started imagining Arthur as Thor (you know, whichever Chris that actor is) and now I can't unsee it 😂 not only are these books pretty short, but they also read really fast for me! Probably not a writing style that will click with readers who love slow, in depth character studies. I'm not one of those readers, so onto the next for me!!

I forget if I mentioned in my review of the valiant, but I'm definitely not someone who is absolutely in love with one version of Arthurian legend as the absolute authority. I've always taken legends as... exactly that. Many versions of a story that might not have an original because, again, legend. I do like seeing the inspiration in the notes at the end, th ugh (LOVE an author's note = ).

Also since it was mentioned in book one's note, I'm going to assume the arm thing was a Monty Python reference. It's just a flesh wound 😂

This is an Arthurian tale with a difference - spaceships and pulse rifles! And although the round table is long gone, there are plenty of knights willing to take the fight to the invading dictator to free the British from oppression again! One thing that I do find odd reading this book, is that it is about the British "empire" fighting the Europeans and another mega-corporation, but it is written in Americanised English! Otherwise, it's a cracking read, with fun characters and a well-paced story. If you know Jenny's books, you probably won't mind the settings being a little sketchy and thin on the ground either.
Good fun!

I received a copy of this book from the author.

This story just gets better as it continues in this the second book in the Star Legend series.

Taylan is still a Marine on board a space ship and getting to know more about the mysterious legendary character that they brought aboard and she has befriended.

Things become more confusing as the ship Fearless, that was lost in the first book, is found. Great but a man is found to be clinging on to the ship’s hull without wearing an EVA suit. Impossible!

As with all good science fiction stories you have to suspend your belief in what’s possible and what’s not.

The mixing of science fiction with legend is inspired and really makes for a great read. I am really looking forward to the next instalment.

The second book in the series gives you a lot of action! The starship Fearless, as we learn at the end of book one, has turned up after disappearing in a mysterious cloud. The people from book one continue with their plans – Jamaicans are revolting against everybody, an old crony of King Arthur turns up, Kala gets a surprise (not necessarily a good one), there's a space battle too – these are just some of the exciting and puzzling things which await you. Just when everything seems to go smoothly along, the plot jinks and you're off in another direction with another surprise. Buckle up, folks, and enjoy the ride!
I received an advance copy and freely leave this honest review.

As always, great story and great characters. The best thing about JJ Green writing is her ability to write the characters so real that you feel as though you know them. You can feel their pain and struggle right along with them. I highly recommend any of her books and this series promises to be just as good or better than the others. I don't do spoilers but the premise of the book is very believable and interesting so sit back and enjoy.

just as good as the first

The story is developing nicely. Merlin and Morgan have turned up as I expected. And the story is so well thought through that their presence is perfectly rational. I shall be interested in seeing how their two characters develop. Taylan’s and Wright’s relationship is getting more interesting. There are plenty of ancillary characters that generate interest too. On to book 3.

I loved this continuation of the mix of space and earth and the past and future king Arthur! It seems impossible that it would even mix into a plausible plot, yet somehow it works beautifully. Taylon, the Major, and Arthur are the main focus in the story as well as trying to stop the Dwyr. I don't want to give away too much but I definitely want you to read this!

Continuing from Book 1 - the revived Arthur gains a new (old) companion and a new (old) enemy; Taylan continues the search for her children; the factions on Earth continue their fighting and escape plans...

A mix of science fantasy and miltary sf shouldn't work but here it does. Familiarity with some of the plot elements makes it fun to work out who the characters are - and who might yet appear... More to come!

Merlin and Arthur.. in space

The future is unclear but this tale brings us into possibilities. 2nd in this series, to find three battles have increased as have the mysteries surrounding characters. Taylan's children are still missing. Arthur and Merlin are as mysterious as ever Anna everything is coming apart... Or together depending on your point of view

I am enjoying the combination of fantasy and scifi. It is very well done. The legend of Arthur develops and increases whilst other fantasy figures surface to make the story even more interesting. There are land and space battles whilst the situation in the islands is changing. All in all a good read.

6/10: Good light-weight read, well done.

You could train Marines to keep on fighting against hopeless odds, to put their lives on the line every day, but you couldn’t train them out of being superstitious.

Great second book

I enjoyed this second book as much as the first. The addition of more Arthurian characters (and their suggested alien origins) made it even more fun.
