Star Legend #3

The Gallant

Rate this book
A gallant war. A deadly fate.

The Britannic Alliance is clawing its way back from annihilation with the help of King Arthur, revived from a three-thousand-year sleep, and former Royal Marine, Taylan Ellis.

Newly discharged, all Taylan wants to do is find her children and keep them safe.

If only life were that simple.

The Alliance is a long way from recouping its lost territories, and deranged cult leader, Dwyr Kala Orr, continues to prey upon Earth's inhabitants.

Orr has discovered Taylan is a threat to her existence, and she's after her blood. To lay low and avoid detection, Taylan joins the Britannic Isles' Resistance, but she soon finds herself roped into the Arthur saga again.

Her fate and that of the Britannic Alliance are irretrievably entwined. The BA need her help to defeat Dwyr Orr. If she fails, she may never see her children again.

J.J. Green is a British-Australian science fiction author with a lifelong love of distant landscapes, intriguing cultures and fascinating places. She was born within the sound of the bells of Mary-le-Bow church in Cheapside, London, making her a bona fide Cockney, and she lived in Australia, Laos and Taiwan before returning to the UK to settle down in Cambridge.

Green’s novels weave science-based speculation with richly personal stories. Her works explore themes of environmental degradation, political conflict, mythical resonance, human resilience, and the ethics of technology and expansion. Her characters—often strong women—navigate future worlds grounded in both scientific plausibility and mythic imagination.

Complex blend of future and past war between three groups for earth territory - 3.5 stars

BA (Britannic Alliance), EAC (Earth Awareness Coalition) and Resistance each have a part to play. Only the Resistance, descendants of the original inhabitants, have a historical claim to the Caribbean lands with a link to British colonialism. We are also given the return of the long-ago dead King Arthur and his famous sword plus Merlin who, in this rendition, is an alien.

If that is not enough, there is a second alien who is trying to take over the natives in some kind of cult worshipping queendom. I found the competing factions difficult to keep track of.

In this King Artur story, we have a trek through Welsh (English) countryside. Some people used automobiles, others horses while most of the poor people just walked. Technology was a mixture of space-faring and primitive people. One space=faring group was planning to emigrate and start a human colony somewhere in the vastness of space.

There was plenty to consider, mostly at a cursory level. The interactions between characters were clearly human with distrust, greed, hate, awe and a lot of scheming to acquire or maintain power.

The tale is similar to a role-playing game in which you are merely an observer, with no controls other than turning the pages. The commonly used energy weapons incapacitate or kill people instantly except when they didn't. Arthur was immune to them. Knife fighting was effective at close range apparently because the energy weapons were awkward to use in close combat. Arthur's sword skills were amazing.

Occasionally there was sympathy for the oppressed and slaughter was averted. There is another book in the sequence if you care to find out how the antagonists resolve the next stages of conflict and adventure.

This is book three in the Star Legend series and I was given a copy of by the author.

This story begins where the last on left off with Wright having given Taylan Ellis her discharge from the marines, which by the way he had no authority to do. How much trouble will this land him in will be explained in this book.

The battles between the three forces continue in West BI, Jamaica and of course, out in space.

The forces which the humans cannot understand i.e. Arthur, Merlin and Morgan, come more to the forefront of this story.

Taylan continues to search for her missing children but is compelled by military forces to return to being a marine for one last mission.

Will this be Taylans last mission? Will she find her children?

Will Arthur and Merlin succeed in their plans to get rid of Morgan and the Dwyr? Is that what their plan truly is?

Will humans leave the Earth to travel through space to find another planet to colonise? Will Iolani Hale have managed to convince Ua Talman to change his ways for the good of humanity?

Only Jenny Green knows the answers to these and all the other questions that arise. The rest of us will have to wait for the next instalment of this gripping series. I can hardly wait.

THE GALLANT by J.J. Green is the third installment in the epic space fantasy adventure, Star Legend series. This is a complex and gripping story of different factions fighting to control Earth, the remaining resources and the political structure. There is a lot a of military fighting, but no sexual content or swearing. I recommend for all ages that enjoy Space Colony and battle stories.

Taylan Ellis back in Ireland actively looking for her children. Soon she's working with the resistance.

Merlin and Arthur are helping with plans to destroy the Dwyr and her empire. The Dwyr's mysterious companion has plans of her own that don't match with the Dwyr's.

Hans Jonte still has hopes of uniting the Resistance and Alliance in Jamaica and rising back into a position of power.

Lorcan continues to develop plans to leave earth with his Colony ships.

So much is happening with battles on earth and in space that you will shake your head wondering what next.

I did receive a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Read as an ARC (no ISBN)

The plot thickens... After her discharge from the Royal Marines Taylan Ellis returns to the BI in search of her children. Things prove complicated - as there is a hunt for her: the Dwyr has learned that she is a threat. Major Wright is under a cloud - and involved in retaking Jamaica from the EAC. Morgan increases her influence with the EAC by seducing Perran away from his mother. Meanwhile Arthur and Merlin are involved in countering her threat. The balance of power in the Antarctic Project seems to be shifting, too...

There are a number of plot threads, including one not mentioned above; it is slowly becoming clearer how they are entwined. I'm looking forward to the next release!

Get ready for a super ride! You're dropped immediately into the action in the first chapter, as Major Wright is pinned down in Jamaica. (I assume that if you're reading book 3 you are familiar with the characters and plot so far.) We catch up with other characters, and each chapter brings new action, among them: Kala is trying to play queen bee to Morgan (ha!), Tayla meets up with the Welsh resistance, and Arthur and Merlin haven't yet convinced everyone that they're not pursuing their own agenda. The threads start to intertwine, and while this book isn't the last, the action and results are very satisfying. Can't wait for the next to find out what happens!

Another exciting chapter of this modern Arthurian legend. Taylan and Wright are back, and they are starting to wonder about the path they are on. But do they have a choice? What are Merlin's intentions? Can they save humanity from Morgan's dark magic?
The author has once again brought her characters to life for us and woven them into a bright tapestry of pain, joy, and intrigue, set in a futuristic world that is still very relatable to today's reader. And yet again, it has a character-driven story that is ever-so-hard to put down!

J.J. Green’s insanely wonderful mashup of alternative history, the return of the legendary Arthur, sci-fi and space-fantasy continues with The Gallant (Star Legend Book 3) and boy is this book ever terrific. Action, suspense thrills and a fantastic rollercoaster of twists and turns with a wonderfully broad cast of perfectly crafted characters, another superbly executed plot advancing a heck of a great story arc and totally fun world-building. I totally enjoyed this book and am happy to highly recommend it.

The appearance of Morgan on the scene once again confirmed to me that the existing Star Legend series are skirting towards some interesting new events that may very well be parallel in occurrence to events that happened 3000 years in the past. Sneaky. Taylan gets roped backed into action with Wright, Arthur and Merlin.
Of course, with Merlin a confirmed alien, his role is rather suspect as action once again abounds.

I'm loving this series.

World politics gets complicated when there are aliens (Merlin and Morgan) doing their bit for the combatants.

Taylan is still looking for her kids but the Britannic Alliance wants her back.

Kala isn't sure whether she still trusts Morgan - Has she learnt too late?

With characters like Taylan, Arthur, Merlin, Morgan, Major TJ Wright and many others both courageous and evil, The Gallant will inspire readers to follow this series. Add in great battles, space travel, and the pain of a mother searching for her lost children and you have a truly exciting reading experience. I loved every word!

Great read

Well another great episode although I did find it difficult to understand why you have Taylan a conscience to killing at the festival at the end of the day they are still the enemy and Yes I agree about the children being innocent but in time s of war innocents do get hurt and killed.. Great story and well worth 5 stars

Another good one

This is another great book in this series. Even though King Arthur, Merlin, an Morgan le Fay are in the book, the author has made 2 of them to be nonhuman aliens, and Arthur is a complete riddle. So though it sounds trite or kitschy, these characters actually work in the story.
