Reflections: Personal Insights from Shaykh Dr Yasir Qadhi

Rate this book
Life is a journey. Every one of us is gifted a set amount of time on this earth, and we all must make the best of it before that time is up. While none of us knows exactly how long we have, what is amazing is that per unit time, we all get the same amount every unit. We all get different total amounts, but no one's hour is discernably different from another person's hour. Yet, that is the only similarity, as some people simply waste entire decades away, while others perform deeds in a few hours or even minutes that last for all eternity!
This book is meant to inspire us all on this journey of life so that we make the best use of our time. Each topic is chosen to be a quick, easy read with a message that is useful to people at any stage of this journey. These topics were all chosen and selected from khutbahs and talks that I've given over the last almost three decades of public speaking, with extensive editing for content, along with the necessary stylistic editing and footnotes that a written work deserves.

Dr. Yasir Qadhi is a prolific author and Islamic teacher who has written several books about Islam. He is a popular speaker in many Muslim circles in the United States, Canada, England and Australia. His lectures at different locations can be found on YouTube. He is one of the few people who has combined an Islamic seminary training (from Islamic University of Madinah) with Western education (from universities of Houston and Yale).

Dr. Qadhi was born in Houston, Texas, to Pakistani parents, in 1975, went to high school in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, graduating valedictorian of his class, and completed a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Houston. After working for Dow Chemical for a short stint, he decided to pursue an education in Islamic studies, and left for the Islamic University of Madinah. There, he completed a second bachelor's degree, specializing in hadith studies, and then went on to complete an M.A. in Theology. Presently, he is in the final stages of completing his Ph.D in Religious Studies from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.

He is the Dean of Academic Affairs and an Instructor in the AlMaghrib Institute. He appears on a number of Islamic satellite channels (Islam Channel in England; Al-Huda Channel in Egypt; Al-Fajr Channel in Egypt; and Peace TV in India, U.K and U.S), where he teaches theology, Seerah, Tajweed, and other topics. He gives regular sermons and lectures. He also blogs at MuslimMatters.org, where he is the group-blog's lead specialist.

This book presents to us contents from chosen khutbahs (lectures) that Dr Yasir Qadhi has given throughout the past 30 years. What is amazing about this book is that it is edited to the extent that we could not hear Dr Yasir speaking anymore; it is edited to make the lectures readable.

The book is written with simple language, yet still able to make us reflect deeply on its contents. It is easy to read, one could simply spend a few hours to finish it. However, that would not be beneficial. Books like this need to be pondered upon, digested and practiced. Personally I read one chapter per day, with a maximum two chapters. Even then, I feel the need to read this book all over again.

The book covers many aspects of Islam. It starts with the basics of the religion such as our pillars of faith, worship, prayer and the Quran. There’s a chapter on the love of Prophet Muhammad SAW. The latter half of the book talked about our current issues and how we’re supposed to face them, that is with searching for knowledge, checking our hearts, and service for mankind in the name of Allah.

My favourite chapters are Crisis of Knowledge, The State We’re In, Our Times Our Challenges, Scholarship, and the final chapter, Legacy. The chapter Legacy contains so much drive and encouragement to do as much good as possible. I was in bed, feeling extremely tired from the day’s events, but could still experience the energy and motivation contained in the article.

This is the kind of book that you'd want to keep for future reference. It is succinct enough to start our journey towards religious knowledge, and to encourage us to be a better khalifah on this earth.

A beautiful collection of reflections. The content of the book were taken from Syeikh previous talk and khutbah. But reading this doesn’t make me feel like reading someone speech but truly it’s like having a personal conversation and reflecting together.

It’s very easy to understand and the topic reflected is a very crucial topic to reflect on.

Alhamdulillah 5 star from me. This is the second book of Dr Yasir Qadhi that I read. The content are divided by topics that are relevant to life. The topics on spouse and next generation are my favourite. Apt reflections that touch and soothe one's heart.

"Mawadda implies a love that is gentle and full of compassion. This type of love that Allah has placed in the hearts of spouses is different from the romantic love which is temporary in nature. ... A love that causes us to care so deeply about our spouse that we are prepared to sacrifice our happiness for theirs. ...a love that develops throughout marriage and remains strong year after year."

wrapping up my 2023 #ramadhanreads with reflections by shaykh dr yasir qadhi, that comes with a lot of heartfelt reminders. :') various topics are covered in here to inspire us to make the best of time on this earth before that time is up. ⁣⁣

life isnt always beautiful but the journey is. there are times where we fail to stop and be grateful for where we are. 🌱 have yall ever have moments when you will naturally, right then and there, feel a certain calmness and gratefulness??? 🥹 i went on a cruise for the first time recently & took the time to pause, notice and absorb that true feeling. it has been so long since i have ever felt that way and i told myself that i would need to have more healing moments like these to renew my intentions and take everyday as a chance to become a better muslim. ⁣⁣🌊
⁣⁣
i love how this book encourages us to do so; to self-reflect on life and ourselves. its really great if youre looking for a boost of motivation to better your day/yourself as it also feels like youre not reflecting on your own, but with the author himself. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
i personally spent quite a long time reading this one, not because it was diffcult to understand or absorb, but just felt like the reading experience is best read slowly & also to make room in between for some deep reflection. 🌱 so glad that i get to read the last few chapters of this book on the last day of ramadhan, it was very apt 💫

Reflections
Personal insights from Shaykh Dr Yasir Qadhi.

What I love the most about this book is that it is giving the chance to truly reflect on the verses in the Quran. I read it with the Mushaf by my side and saying azkar all the time.

Quran was revealed for prudence, consideration and reflection.
It is not only about knowing the meaning of the verse or why it was revealed, it is feeling each and every word, relate to it and reflect ❤️

Thankful to Dr. Yasir for this book and definitely will look for more of his books.

Easy to understand, and I love it that ustaz yasir qadhi shared so many things but as simple as can be. This book helps me to reflect upon every single thing we go through every day. Each chapter covers one topic and he shared number of verses of Quran related to each issue.

I love the final topic the most. I finished this book within few weeks only, but I hope I can find time to do my own reflections afterwards and do some note taking to improve my understanding. In shaa Allah

An easy read. There were a few parts that I couldn’t really relate as the author and I live in different environments. Nonetheless, the language is easy for me to understand and reflect.
