With a second chance ahead of them and the moonshiner’s compound in the rear-view mirror, Ben and his crew can resume their cross-country trek to Colorado. Or can they?
Three newly rescued acquaintances and another canine companion complicate their life on the road. And the addition of two more vehicles to their west bound convoy only adds to Ben’s responsibilities.
Making matters worse, the open road quickly proves more hostile than they remember. Scarce supplies, extreme weather and desperate miscreants have made the landscape a living hell. They soon find themselves fighting for survival once again.
Ben’s mettle and army training are put to the test in more ways than one, and he realizes it will take greater determination and cunning than ever before to stay on course. All while learning that help sometimes comes from the most unlikely places.
It’s okay I’m still having a hard time believing the world went to hell within 2-3 weeks!
There are now 9 of them and 3 dogs between 4 vehicles and every time they stop they put their life at risk.
The amount of people the dad has had to kill in the past couple days is crazy because he’s averaging a person per day!
As a mom I thought it was stupid no one took it more seriously that in the blistering heat his 12 year old daughter basically slept the day away underneath a blanket. They are lucky she didn’t have a seizure from the fever getting so high! She could have died!
Also if they just cleared out everything the moonshine people had they should have come across some antibiotics! They had their compound running efficiently having sprung their trap to many other people based on the vehicles left behind. Plus they traded with the other moonshine community’s, so this just seems a little unlikely. Even the old man’s hidden trove or treasures he 💯 would have had 1 bottle of antibiotics!
Oh well I understand it meant to stir up more drama in the series.
I’m also annoyed that they pulled over and camped so close to the border of a very unsavoury gang that looks to have taken over the area. I think that’s going to bite them in the ass!

Nine books seems like a lot, but these are all very short. There were a few editing issues:"Been kept the conversation" instead of Ben, but nothing really too bad. The story was just an ongoing everyone-is-bad and the people-I'm-with are too old/don't communicate/are too slow. With all of his caution and worry about looters, even while watching them from the hotel, Ben figures they are all OK to just finish breakfast and hope the bad guys don't notice. Not a good plan when you have dogs and kids. He also treats us to a lengthy lament as to how the country was going downhill before the EMP. How do you feel about things now, Ben? The struggle with gas and roads got kind of monotonous but at least we have a new destination for Book 10.
*Note: out of an abundance of caution I will warn you that this review may contain light spoilers in a general sense but nothing that should spoil any particular part of the book. I'm honestly not even sure that I should click the "spoilers" box below, but I will just to be safe. Trust me, I hate spoilers, too.*
Review: I'm enjoying this series for the most part but I do have to keep reminding myself not to get annoyed at the rather obviously contrived scenarios. The characters keep making incredibly stupid mistakes, the majority of which they really should know how to avoid by now, especially with Ben's Army Ranger training and experience plus everything else they've already been through. The result is that it's painfully obvious at times that the author is adding these contrived scenarios not only to set up for a future scene, but also to bulk out the story and make the series longer. It's kind of funny that the books are still so short even after all of this finagling.
There is one thing in particular that really, REALLY annoys me, though: if your dog is not obedient enough or well trained enough to obey voice commands the first time you give them, it shouldn't be off leash outside of a fenced in area. Especially if you're in a dangerous, unpredictable, post-apocalyptic world. If these people could just figure out this basic tenet of responsible dog ownership, they could already have avoided some really dangerous scenarios. They could also keep the dogs from drinking (much of) the obviously polluted rainwater that Ben was worried about them drinking. Water that could very well be contaminated by radioactive fallout. And yet, I'm not sure that I've heard them even mention the word "leash" at any point in this series. Surely they could have found or looted a few leashes and collars by this point, especially after the last place they were in.

A very nice read I was impressed and how this book is going it didn't take me long read it as the plot was really good impress with the writing skills of this author it has everything that a book should have Adventure problems that would be in a world that has went South I am looking forward to the next book with anticipation of the last I'm impressed that that's there is not so much blood and gore and that what has happened would happen in the way this author describes it like I said a very nice read I could hardly put the book
Now traveling as a convoy with the core group, three dogs, and the freed captives—Carlos, Rita, and Martin—Ben and the others face the added strain of resources and the challenges of adjusting their routines to accommodate the newcomers. Much of the journey highlights these difficulties, with the story culminating in a relentless lightning storm that forces the group to take shelter in an abandoned hotel for the night.
I have enjoyed the journey with Ben and his family as they battle their way home to Colorado. After the USA is attacked and every thing is down, Ben has his children together and heads home. But nothing good comes easy as literally fight for every mile. Highly recommend.
Excellent continuation of the series. You can help but like the characters in this series. Their "quick" trip across the country and back again is filled with dangerous situations, very bad people, and extremely desperate people. So far they've managed to stay alive but who knows what the next moment will bring.
Glad to finally have more conversation outside of Ben’s head. I’m really waiting for their luck to run out. Yes, they’ve come across trouble but there hasn’t been anything majorly “bad” happening to them yet. The way home is taking both longer and shorter than expected and the end leads us to another detour. Could this be the major set back?
This series is so good, I just wish they were twice as long! The whole storyline has been incredibly good reading! Can't wait for the next one to get here!
I thoroughly enjoy this series. My only complaint is that I want longer books. When this latest book ended I was disappointed. I wanted to continue reading to see what happens on their quest to get back to CO. These characters are engaging and you want them to succeed.

I have loved this series from the beginning. The storyline is good. Keeps wondering. The only dislike I have so far is that they aren't longer. I'll be disappointed when this wraps up, but that just means it was a great story.
Eh, this was fine. Not good, not bad. Just fine. I don’t mind the books being too short, but it’s starting to drag way too much. I’m just ready for them to catch a break and get to where they want to be.
This was another great read in the series. Things in the country are only getting worse as Ben, his family, and others travel together. I like that it doesn’t have swearing.
Another great book by Bruno Miller. I love these characters. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. I would recommend this book and all of Bruno’s books.
I really enjoy this series it’s slower than some but still has enough action. It’s more paced and has a realistic feel to some books in this genre don’t
