English title is Sammy’s Children’s Day/Chusan’s Liuyi Children’s Day, 111 chapters and 19 extras. Hong Kong 80’s triad/gangster novel that is somehow cute, sweet, funny and violent. If you enjoy mafia/noir/crime/corruption novels like Gold Class Fighter 金牌打手 I cannot shove this in your face any faster. This novel did not let me breathe and I’m excited to watch the drama now (MC/ML are perfectly cast IMO). I think Rosmei has licensed it?

He Chusan 21, incredibly smart college student, trying to get out of Kowloon Walled City which is ungoverned and run by gangs, not as passive as you think, matches Xia Liu Yi wit for wit, doesn’t understand his attraction towards him, wants to protect him as someone who isn’t in the position to protect him, can see right through XLY, knows exactly what kind of person he is through the façade, dramatic, and can put on an act

Xia Liu Yi 24/25, triad leader, vicious but loyal, fierce, intense, in complete denial about his feelings, bullies HC like a boy bullying his crush in middle school, really tough on the outside but once he falls, he is completely in love, needlessly violent but that’s all he’s known, does not have a domestic bone in his body

⚔️Opposites attract-chemistry is incredible and I laughed way more than I thought I would in a triad novel-mostly at XLY’s reactions. HC fell so quickly and then XLY fell so freaking hard
⚔️ Realistic for the most part. It does have a HE but there are consequences and it almost makes it bittersweet. But definitely a HE
⚔️ Complicated pain/jealousy of competing with memory of someone who has already died (reminds me of Given, Rebecca and another one I cannot think of right now!)
⚔️ Gangs and territory wars. A lot of violence, mentions of SA, suicide, and of course all the stuff that comes with triads- prostitution, murder, drug trafficking, gambling, torture, etc
⚔️ Fantastic writing. I was really able to visualize the fights with this author‘s writing, loved the foreshadowing, the character development, and mostly realistic plot. The translation I read was amazing IMO (although I’ve seen some gripes about it so take my opinion with a grain of salt)
⚔️ Humor- author did a wonderful job weaving funny moments throughout the brutality of gang violence and death
⚔️ Foreshadowing had me so stressed about betrayal!
⚔️ So.Many.Couples. FIVE couples and I loved them all. Vers couples too
⚔️ Lesbian and trans rep but LOTS of homophobia and transphobia (takes place in 80’s Hong Kong)

-HS was nothing like I thought he was going to be! The top! So refreshing that he knows what he wants, smart, willing to sacrifice, puts in all the effort and does not give up.
-XLY: He was hard to love at first but I ended up crying over him the most. His disconnect with how to love or be loved was so endearing and cute- watching him navigate his way in love and having a home life for the first time was everything. Finding out why he avoided relationships and sex was heartbreaking. Seeing him give everything to HC is just so special. And his subordinates were so supportive. I just loved their mafia family
-Xie Jia Hua and Lu Guang Ming: I LOVED THEM BOTH SO MUCH

I started reading this only because I wanted context for the adaptation. After all, the book is so long, and the adaptation has only 9 episodes, but I ended up absolutely loving it.

Both their development over the course of the book, especially Chusan's was crazy. I did not expect the last 40 or so chapters to be the way they did. I was completely taken aback by everything that happened.

The second couple was pretty irrelevant to me, and I do not care about them in the book any more than I do in the show. I loved Dongdong, Xiao Ma, and Chusan's family, though.

If I were not juggling this book with a thousand other things, I would probably finish this in half the time it took me to read it.

I liked the first 20 chapters or so, but eventually, the length of the book caught up to me. It felt so long that I started skimming and crazy things kept happening nonstop 😵‍💫 At that point, I realized I just didn't have the stamina to actually read it all the way through 😂 I still enjoyed the ride, though as short as it was 😅 and I saw another review from a friend having similar thoughts so I guess I’m not alone maybe the pacing was just too slow 🤷‍♀️but the humor and characters were really up to my alley ♥️

i Finally finished the ~1300 pages and 111 chapters that is 初三的六一儿童节 (Sammy’s Children’s Day) and i can now truly say this is one of my favourite stories ever.

on surface a romance set in 1990s Kowloon between triad boss Liuyi and the university student Chusan he captures to help him do business, the story also captures a developing Hong Kong struggling to clamp down on gang violence and internal corruption, with a volatile financial market susceptible to foreign manipulation. and with so many big players with their own motives, you can never tell which way the wind is going to blow.

despite the high tension, 蛇蝎点点 (SXDD, the author) brightens the mood with a lively cast of strong, fiercely loyal characters that make this book hilarious yet incredibly touching.

Questa novel è stata droga pura. Non riuscivo a staccarmi!
Mi è piaciuta davvero tanto, mi rendo conto che non è perfetta ma sinceramente non importa, i pregi per me sono tanti. I due protagonisti mi sono entrati nel cuore e soprattutto ho trovato scritto molto bene la loro relazione e la loro evoluzione, cambiano molto in confronto l’inizio e in positivo. Vederli crescere e vedere il loro amore intensificarsi è stato stupendo e verso la fine mi è scappata anche una lacrimuccia. In generale ci sono tanti personaggi interessanti, forse avrei voluto però qualcosina in più sulla seconda coppia ma va bene così. Bellissima l’atmosfera di kowloon negli anni 80/90. Mi è piaciuto vedere il punto di vista non solo dei criminali ma anche della polizia. Un bel mafia romance con anche un finale a mio parere coerente e soddisfacente! Assolutamente una delle letture più belle di quest’anno, la consiglio soprattutto se amate il genere.

I am obsessed with this novel. This one was not on my radar. I just learned that a live-action of this novel is out, and it is supposed to be a gangster romance set in Hong Kong. I was browsing through GR after finishing ‘Four Faced Buddha ’, and this novel showed up again and again. It had a completely different vibe than FFB, and I thought, why not give it a try? Thankfully, I found an excellent translation online Sammy's Children's day and from the very first chapter, I was hooked.

The story starts with He Chu San, our gentle-faced, studious and pure-hearted top, who gets kidnapped by the big bad wolf, i.e. Xia Liu Yi, a gangster, to write a screenplay for a movie that his gang was producing for money laundering. A turbulent start that should not have gone any further, but a heart wants what it wants, and thus starts our underworld romance saga with numerous ups and downs that just thrilled me to my core.

This novel cannot be categorised as just one thing. It had everything: romance, heartbreak, action, betrayal, smut, suspense, humour, friendship, the never-ending sort of love- you name it, and this novel has it. It was such a rush reading this story. I started with very few expectations, but the chapters just flew by, and I could not put it down.

This is a slow-burn romance, so you need to be patient. Taming the ultimate boss of the Xiao Qi Hall required patience, brains and wiles, which our A san had in droves. He Chu San uses all the weapons in his arsenal to lure in the big bad wolf and then claims him for eternity. I loved the whole pursuing part as A San reels in his prey and steadily but surely makes Liu Yi his. It was a masterclass in how to make the prickly gangster turn into a fluffy kitty who will only purr under him.

Not all was fun and games though, coz there were numerous scares as Liu Yi’s dangerous life as a gang boss threatened to tear the lovers apart. The police are dead set to bring the illegal gang down, whereas there are also shadowy, sinister powers who want to harm the people close to Liu Yi. There is an undercurrent of suspense here as Liu Yi actively looks into the murder of his previous boss and his sister’s death. So, interspersed with steamy and heart-melting romance, we have a lot of scheming, action and near brushes with death that had my adrenaline pumping. The whole novel was like a movie going on in front of my eyes, vivid and breathing.

The characters here are all very well written. All of them, however small their role, added a unique flair to the story and made it more engaging. Especially Azure Dragon, Liu Yi’s former boss, who dies pretty early on but had a strong impact throughout the novel, especially on the MCs. The extras later give his character better closure but still a character you can’t help but feel for.

This is a very big novel with a huge amount of extras, so be prepared for that. Given the length and the span of the timeline, there are numerous characters here who make a significant impact on the story and were a treat to read outside the main characters’ arc. We have a total of 4 different couples other than the leads here whose relationship develops along with theirs, but it never takes the focus away from the main story. Everything fit together perfectly. The character development to the plot development was all brilliantly handled. There is trauma/pain but equal amounts of healing and love, so it made me cry but also swoon and laugh out loud too.

For smut lovers out there, this book is your golden manna from heaven. The author did not skimp on the smexy parts. There are explicit scenes sprinkled heavily throughout the main story and the extras, so do not skip any part of this book. He Chu San, the gentle scholar, is actually a beast when it comes to his man, so watch out for all the heavy-handed steaminess that the author gifted us here.

Overall, this novel is going on the shelf as my topmost favourite MM novels of all time. A huge thanks to all the translators on the website for their hard work in bringing this book to life for international readers. Please keep up the good work.

This really fleshed out the drama and made a whole lot of things more clear. I did enjoy most of the extras, except for maybe the last AU. It went a bit long and I kept getting the characters mixed up in my head.

This is scene seriously the epitome of their relationship!

{He Chu San shuffled back into place and shoved a huge bouquet of brilliant red roses into Xia Liu Yi's arms. "They're for you."

It was the first time anyone had ever given Boss Xia flowers. He held the bouquet as though it were an explosive package, his face instantly growing hot. "What the hell is this? Isn't this disgusting?"

"How is it disgusting?" He Chu San looked deeply aggrieved. "Roses represent my heart."

"Sappy. Shut up," Xia Liu Yi snapped irritably.

He Chu San glanced sideways. Boss Xia's face was as red as an apple.

"Pfft...."

"..."

"Ow, ow, ow! I was wrong! I won't laugh anymore! Stop kicking me or we're going to crash..."}

{He Chu San laughed quietly to himself. His Brother Liu Yi was like gray wolf that normally bared its fangs and claws at everyone, yet the moment Father He, that old sheep, raised his dental drill and went baa-aa, he tucked his tail between his legs and fled.}

💛HOW is this book so underrated?!

I’m 27. I’ve been reading since I was 9, and I’ve been reading gay fiction for around 7 years. In all that time, whenever I saw someone call a book “underrated,” I almost always knew it already. I’d seen it recommended somewhere, come across it on Goodreads, heard people talk about it, etc.

This is the first time I’ve genuinely finished a book and thought: wait… WHY does nobody talk about this?! 💎

And I’m not saying that lightly.

There are 5 couples in this book—1 lesbian couple and the rest gay/bi—and somehow every single relationship has its own chemistry and development.
But here's the thing:
This isn't just a romance book with a plot attached to it.
The plot is actually GOOD.

It's long. Really long. And somehow I never once felt like it was too long. The story takes its time, but it doesn't waste that time. The slow burn actually feels like a slow burn rather than two characters staring at each other for 700 pages while nothing happens.

There’s crime, justice, morality, trauma, abuse, revenge, loss, second chances, determination, patience, self-awareness, personal growth, sacrifice, and obviously love.
And the best part? The romance never has to sacrifice the actual story.

❤️💛And then there's the thing I loved MOST about this book.🩵🩷

It doesn't rely on sexual or gender stereotypes.

At all.

I honestly can't remember another book I've read in this genre that handles this so naturally.
There's no subtle “bottom = weaker/less masculine/less dominant” nonsense. No implication that someone's sexual preference determines their personality or worth. No weird misogynistic ideas about sex hiding underneath the surface.
The book treats sexuality and sexual preferences with a level of openness and acceptance that I really appreciated.
And it doesn't need to constantly remind you how progressive it is, either. It just… lets people be people.
Also, THANK GOD, the intimate scenes don't take over the book. There are plenty of them, especially in the second half and extras, but they don't feel repetitive or like they're there just to pad the word count.

🟡The characters???

10/10.

Believable. Memorable. Likeable. Well-developed.

And the character development is genuinely one of my favourite things about this book. These aren't characters who exist solely to fall in love. They have their own issues, motivations, flaws, trauma, growth, etc.

Which makes the relationships feel SO much more satisfying.

🔴The romance

10/10.

Five couples.
Five different dynamics.
And somehow five times the chemistry.

The relationships actually develop. They feel earned. And the emotional payoff is chef's kiss.

🟤Pacing — 9/10

It's a realistic slow burn, and I mean that as a compliment.

The book is long enough to let things develop naturally without becoming boring. I never got that “okay, we get it, can we PLEASE move on?” feeling.

🔵Writing — 9/10

Beautiful, immersive, and easy to read.

My main complaint is actually about the English translation, not the writing itself.

The character names—especially in the extras—became REALLY confusing. As a non-native English reader, I genuinely needed a character list at some points 😭.

There were also some censored parts in the translation, which annoyed me quite a bit.

There's a LOT going on here: crime, justice, morality, trauma, abuse, revenge, loss, sacrifice, second chances, patience, determination, self-awareness, self-development, first love, love in general…

And somehow it doesn't feel like the author is throwing random themes at the wall.

This book managed to give me:

excitement → happiness → sadness → anger → determination → hope → love

So yeah. It got me.

Satisfying. A little shocking. And most importantly, realistic.

After 15 years of reading, this is currently my favourite book.

And honestly, I don't think I expected it to be.
I went into it without expecting much and came out wondering why the hell I hadn't heard about it years ago.
I'm now actively looking for a complete, uncensored translation because I want to buy the physical version—and I already know I'm going to reread this multiple times.
If you're looking for a mature queer romance where the romance isn't the entire story, the characters actually develop, the plot can stand on its own, and the relationships aren't built around the same recycled sexual/gender stereotypes…

Before I begin my review I want to shed light to future readers that this book uses a slur pertaining to Indian individuals. While it appears about 3 to 4 times and the translators make a note of identifying the slur the first time it pops up, I still believe the reader should be aware before going in to prevent a shock while reading.

While I am no poet and cannot give you a flowery review for this book, I hope this review still shows how important this book, the characters and the storyline has come to mean to me.

Wow. This book is emotional heavy and so worth the investment in reading it. This book took me through the ringer with these characters, their relationships and the concepts of the future and how our action or lack thereof causes more impact than we might think.

During this read you'll find yourself feeling for the broad range of characters this book introduces. Whether it's travelling through Liuyi's emotional and at time detrimental relationship with his sister and brother-in-law or travelling through Chusan's growing feeling for Liuyi and at times battling for his care and affection. Even the side characters you begin to root for and hope they also reach a happy ending.

Liuyi:

For Liuyi's character you see him constantly change and explore a version of life he wasn't aware was possible for him. Liuyi's is deathly loyal to his family and the people around him so much that it at times holds him back from believing in Chusan as well as himself. Finding love within himself and in turn letting someone else love him was a constant challenge Liuyi faces even with the main story ending and side stories starting.

Chusan:

Chusan's character held a kind of depth I wasn't truly prepared to see. While he certainly battled with Right, Wrong and Liuyi, he never for a second denied his feelings for him and that one day he would be as important to Liuyi as Liuyi was to him. Even early on in the story you can see Chusan change to better fit Liuyi's world while trying to take him out of it. Chusan constantly fighting for the love between him and Liuyi to stand the test of time is a admirable feat not many characters have been able to accomplish for a long time (whether they should or not isn't up for concern here).

While their love story is the main plot of this story, it surely doesn't fall flat in it's side characters and storylines. The crime aspect of this story was beautifully thought out and tied together and a well written ending. For every step of this story the crime aspect directly impacts the relationships between all the characters and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Chusan and Liuyi are characters that will stay me for the rest of my life. Their ability to want change and seek it for themselves, their families and most of all each other is only something I hope to achieve in any lifetime.

I started this book after watching the first season of the drama and fell in love with the beautiful gangster, Xia Liuyi.😭
What can I say?
I love miserable -beautiful- gay men in denial.🤭
Throughout the story, I slowly started to like Chusan as well, but as much of a black flag as he is, I couldn't completely open up to him.
The plot twist is that between the mafia boss and this nerd, the nerd, He Chusan, is the most terrifying one.❤️‍🔥

I enjoyed the book very much, there was such good character development in every single one of them that i'm in awe.
but I must say the amount of happenings in every chapter overwhelmed me, which is the main reason reading this book took months.
I connected with the characters too deeply, and every incident was so grave for me as if it happened to me; this was all because of the background knowledge I had of them from watching the drama.💞
They had already been envisioned in my mind, and I could see every move, every injury, and hear everything in their own voices, which intensified the experience for me.✨

Given the 2175 pages this book has, the story is very detailed and well-written.✨
The story spans 20 years and is narrated perfectly throughout.

Although it is a romance book, the author did not lessen the cruelty or scariness of the mafia world and shows it exactly as it is, and there is no sugar-coating the mafia world, not even a little.⛓️🗡

I cried the last 50 pages of the main story (i actually cried 90% of time reading this), NO JOKE.
but then again, the extras were so much fun and I giggled so much and kicked the air, so we can call it even🙂‍↕️🤭

I might be biased because Chusan’s Liuyi accompanied me through a turbulent phase at work, but I have nothing but positive things to say about this novel. The story is full of emotions: comedy, tragedy, romance, and plenty of plot twists, all of them deeply intense. The narrative is also remarkably tight and gives proper closure to the characters, even the secondary ones.
However, the best part for me isn't even the plot itself (as great as it is), but the characters. It's the kind of characters that, once you finish the novel, makes you feel like you're saying goodbye to real friends. I can't quite explain this attachment; they are simply captivating (Chusan is my little king).
Finally, I didn't even need to go to AO3 in a panic to wean myself off the characters through fanfiction, the author herself wrote an AU in the extras, saving me the trouble. Literally a fanfic written by the author, love it! R3X61 FOREVER

The complex story lines, and the good vs evil twists were pretty well written. Even the side couples are very well written and provided a lot of the funny moment in the book. Very interesting to see how the TV adaptation will play out, and how may side couples will came out. I am so looking forward to see Jade Goddess, that most interesting character in the book. Their story line stands out the most for me.
