Le ragazze di Aboke. Adolescenti rapite e bambini soldati nella tragedia dell'Uganda

Rate this book

You can never be able to understand the suffering, pain, sorrow, anger, emptiness, fear among other things that the people in the north suffered because of the LRA. The abductions, killings and many nights out in the cold not knowing what will happen to you. Northern Uganda is still recovering from this war.

It still surprises me that while Uganda was getting praise from the international community for its effort surrounding human rights and development, the entire northern region was engulfed in a decades-long war. This book didn’t give me any new information about the war that I haven’t heard through word of mouth, but it did highlight the work of a few incredible people. Having been to the very school where the 139 girls were abducted, I’ve tried to put myself in the situation of Sister Rachele and the parents… what would I do?

I was also surprised at how political and global the Aboke girls story was, especially at the time. They were pawns in diplomatic relations between Sudan and Uganda, both of whom were funding each others rebel movements.

After reading a few books and hearing oral accounts of the LRA, I still don’t have a grasp on how formidable and large they were. They had spokespeople all over the world, including the UK and the US, in an effort to be seen as a legitimate political movement rather than a rag-tag, cultish militia. However, it’s clear their Draconian methods and rhetoric prevented that from happening. Along with the war in Uganda, they played a role in the Second Congo War and the South Sudanese Civil War. It’s hard to imagine this malnourished and ill-equipped fighting force of mostly abducted child soldiers impacted so much of the regional conflicts and geopolitics.

A major question I’m left with is should it really have taken 20+ years to end the reign of the LRA in northern Uganda? Many people believe they were purposely allowed to exist to subjugate northerners so the region would remain unstable, and unable to launch a legitimate opposition to Museveni’s government.

This is complicated to review because the story is so important to know and I could tell the author truly cared. The writing just was not very good.

Ik vond dit boek zeer aangrijpend. Zeer goed geschreven.

Gruesome, but this is how life is for children in parts of the world I am sheltered from and I wanted to read about it. This world needs so much love. Well written book though I wouldn't let my son read it until he is old enough.

This wasn't the most scholarly book but its horrific descriptions of the state of Northern Uganda were gripping and kept me glued to the book. After reading 20+ books on Uganda this book still managed to make my stomach turn at the descriptions of the atrocities that have been going on. This book had a lot more Joseph Kony in it than other books on Uganda that I have read. It is a fascinating subject to study, as the country has been among the worlds most troubled since the British gave Uganda back to the Ugandans.

Amazing story. I was in Gulu, Uganda last year and look forward to going back this year to bring some much needed relief and service to the area. This book is about survival. Very good.

This is almost more sentimental to me than anything because it one of the first books that introduced me to the atrocities of Northern Uganda.
