[Professional Body Double]

Rate this book
ZhouXiang didn’t know if God was giving him a second chance to live because he wanted to give him extra loving care or was it because he hasn’t messed with him enough.

Otherwise, how could it be that both in and out of his entertainment career, whether it was in his past life or his current life, YanMingXiu would consider him as the substitute for the same person.

He also didn’t know, between him and Young Master Yan, who was actually more pitiful; the one who could only be treated as a substitute or the one could only find a substitute.

In his past life, ZhouXiang was the stuntman for the big star WangYudong.

But not just as his martial art stuntman…..

Even within his deeply ill-fated relationship with YanMingXiu, he was also undeniably a complete substitute.

Disheartened, ZhouXiang went with a group of documentary film crew into the deep valleys of the treacherous mountains. Unexpectedly, he lost his footing and fell off a cliff .

When he awakened again, it was already two years later. Nevertheless, he awakened in another person’s body.

What is even more tragic is that he still couldn’t escape the fate of being a substitute…

T/N: 替身: Tishen is a person who replaces another; a substitute, in filming the tishen is a stuntman/body-double.

My first SQC (Shui Qian Cheng/水千丞) 188 novel and I’m intrigued! If you’ve never heard of the 188 series (I hadn’t) here’s a great link that explains everything. https://www.reddit.com/r/DanmeiNovels.... Basically 11 books in the same universe with the all the same tropes.

Okay, I loved this book. I don’t typically seek out this type of novel but now that I have read this I will definitely continue the series. It’s not a perfect novel (it’s got a lot of bad reviews 😬) dogblood in every sense but at the time exactly what I wanted.

What to expect:
✔️Reincarnation/rebirth
✔️Entertainment industry
✔️Wife chasing-crematorium-dogblood-misunderstandings
✔️Some non-con (really only once but a few dub-con)
✔️Age gap 10+ years
✔️Shou is not delicate, pretty, or feminine
✔️Younger scummy gong (188 cm 😉) that will drive you crazy
✔️Angst/heartbreak
✔️The BEST best friend ever. Might be my favorite best friend in danmei
✔️Family is a big part of the story
✔️MC and ML both gay from the beginning but ML is not out to his family
✔️Homophobia from family members
✔️🌶️🌶️🌶️
✔️Hard earned HE

*There are two ML POV chapters that the translators decided to put first but I decided to read them after the flashback was finished. Not sure when the author wrote those chapters or when they were intended to be read but it felt spoilery to read them first so I waited. I feel like that was the better way to read it but maybe not?

I thought there would be a bit of angst, but I didn't expect this to HURT SO MUCH!!!

I'm unsure how this novel made me feel, but I don't think I can read anything like this again. They were hurting each other unknowingly or not from beginning to end! Their guilt and regrets were especially well portrayed, so I really felt their pain. I don't regret it though. I cried and suffered like never before, but it's the kind of pain that you end up enjoying. (I'm not okay, send help 😖)

My 4-star rating is mainly for the unnecessary (in my opinion) family drama when everything was finally taking the right path. I was left waiting for some cute and couplely moments after all that suffering, and I only got two chapters 😭 of them being together without obstacles.

Initially, I was intrigued by Yang Mingxiu's story after his cameo in Alpha Predator. However, unlike my usual approach of diving in blindly, I read the novel's description and was surprised to see that it involved transmigration - a departure from SQC's usual genres, though still with a familiar plot present in almost all 188 of her novels.

Unfortunately, my high expectations for Professional Body Double may have led to my disappointment with the story. I found it dragged on and many of the characters and their actions were frustrating. The MC's self-pity was particularly exasperating to read, and I couldn't stand Lan Xirong's tactlessness and selfishness - I wanted him out of the picture as soon as possible. Additionally, I disliked Lan Xirong’s and Cai Wei’s actions as the MC’s friends at one point. Though I know they only care about him but they didn't have the right to do so as non-parties involved.

Rather than feeling angst, I mostly felt frustrated. The story seemed like an endless guessing game, filled with assumptions and misunderstandings. I'm sorry to those who like Zhou Xiang, but he's currently my least favorite shou out of all of SQC's 188 novels.

Of all the characters in the novel, my favorite was Yan Mingsu - yes, Yan Mingsu instead of Yan Mingxiu. I liked the latter as well, but I was more drawn to his brother, who won the Best Brother award in this book! If SQC ever wrote a story for him in the future, even if it wasn't danmei, I would be happy to read it.

Overall, while SQC's foray into transmigration wasn't her best work in my opinion, it's still worth checking out. Unfortunately, it just didn't quite click with me as I had hoped. Would have been better if readers got to see Yan Mingxiu’s pov instead of just hearing about it from the mouth of others. That would definitely be angsty.

Professional Body Double

3.5 stars. Shui Qian Cheng is THE best at writing angst, melodrama and toxic but very compelling relationships. The pair is very similar to 无常劫 Wu Chang Jie Impermanence Calamity . As with her other two books, she really excels at writing the feelings, motivations and emotional states of the two main characters so that even when the tragedy starts and they act in toxic and possessive ways with each other, it makes sense. I really enjoyed reading the drama that happens between these two characters. I did feel that the crazy plot twists kind of stretch the limit of believability for a contemporary novel. The angst worked better with Wu Chang Jie and Blood Crown.

"Professional Body Double" by Shui Qian Cheng is a captivating and emotionally resonant novel that delves into the complexities of identity, relationships, and the human psyche. The story is well-crafted, engaging, and brimming with tension and intrigue, making it a compelling read from start to finish.

The novel centers around Zhou Xiang, a man who is given a second chance at life under mysterious circumstances. In both his past and current lives, Zhou Xiang finds himself constantly being used as a substitute. Previously, he was a stuntman for the big star Wang Yudong, and even in his deeply ill-fated relationship with Yan Ming Xiu, he was treated as nothing more than a replacement. Disheartened by his life, Zhou Xiang joins a documentary film crew on a journey into the treacherous mountains, where he tragically falls off a cliff. When he awakens two years later, he finds himself in another person's body, yet he cannot escape the fate of being a substitute.

One of the standout aspects of "Professional Body Double" is its richly developed characters. Shui Qian Cheng excels at creating multi-dimensional characters who are both relatable and compelling. Zhou Xiang’s journey is one of self-discovery, grappling with the ethical dilemmas and emotional toll of living multiple lives. His character is richly developed, portrayed with nuance and sensitivity, making his journey deeply engaging.

Opposite Zhou Xiang is the enigmatic and complex Yan Ming Xiu, who initially hires Zhou Xiang for his services. Yan Ming Xiu is a character shrouded in mystery, with motivations that are slowly unraveled as the story progresses. His interactions with Zhou Xiang are charged with tension and intrigue, and their evolving relationship adds depth and complexity to the narrative. Yan Ming Xiu's character is multi-dimensional, revealing layers of vulnerability and strength that make him a compelling counterpart to Zhou Xiang.

The supporting characters are equally well-fleshed out, each adding depth and richness to the narrative, contributing to the story in meaningful ways. Their interactions and relationships create a vibrant and interconnected world that is thoroughly enjoyable to explore.

The book's pacing is excellent, maintaining a perfect balance between moments of intense action and quieter, reflective scenes. This keeps the reader engaged throughout, as the story unfolds with a mix of suspense and emotional depth. The writing is elegant and evocative, with Shui Qian Cheng's prose bringing the characters and their world vividly to life.

Themes of identity and the search for self are central to the narrative. Zhou Xiang’s role as a body double forces him to confront questions about his own identity and what it means to be true to oneself. This exploration is handled with great skill, offering readers a thought-provoking and emotionally charged reading experience.

Additionally, the novel touches on themes of love, loyalty, and betrayal. The relationships in "Professional Body Double" are complex and multifaceted, adding further depth to the story. The romantic elements are beautifully woven into the narrative, providing moments of tenderness and passion that contrast with the more intense and suspenseful aspects of the plot.

While "Professional Body Double" is a largely gripping and satisfying read, there are a few minor quibbles that prevent it from being a perfect five-star book. Some readers might find certain plot twists predictable, and there are moments where the story's pacing slows down a bit too much. However, these are minor issues in an otherwise outstanding novel.

Overall, "Professional Body Double" by Shui Qian Cheng is a remarkable work of fiction that offers a deeply engaging and thought-provoking reading experience. With its well-developed characters, intriguing plot, and elegant prose, it is a novel that will resonate with readers long after they have turned the last page. It earns a well-deserved 4.5-star rating and is highly recommended for those who enjoy emotionally rich and intellectually stimulating stories.

the dog blood coagulated. the husband chasing crematorium was really going for the gold in the beijing olympics. what a ride.

went in ready to be a bit annoyed because melodrama & misunderstandings drive me up a wall, but the pacing throughout this never actually had that be a problem. affection & rivalries (and combinations therein) all ebbed’n’flowed in ways that felt true to the characters without being drawn out or needlessly obtuse just to wring the most angst possible from the plot.

(( i am Very excited for ตัวนาย ตัวแทน to see how thailand regionalizes the story (กูรอคอยจะเห็นอัพภูมีจูบกัน) ))

Si no definitivamente sería 3⭐

No, bueno ahora enserio... me gustó mucho!! (3,5/5).

i can't believe i read a book that's angsty like this. it was actually super interesting so that's why i kept with it. the only thing i hated were the flashbacks so i skipped over them to go to the present time and then i went back. the chapters leading up to the current timeline was super angsty. so painful. PAIN.

overall, really liked this book!

I didn’t expect a rebirth it didn’t like how it was thrust in the middle of the plot but It was ok. If you read svss this rebirth here is slightly similar to what happened in svss. Overall, the main characters are both pitiful, the story was entertaining enough for me to finish it. I’d recommend it to those who like reading about showbiz, second chance, rebirth and possessive ml.

Rating: 4/5- Angsty, messed up but a huge page turner. I was captivated.

I put this book off for quite some time as it was marked as a heavily angsty read. In my opinion, it wasn’t as terrible as some angst ridden novels I’ve read prior. I didn’t shed any tears for the characters. I think they were both complex and silly in their own ways and all the consequences they faced were because of their own decisions. These are two characters who are just destined for misery and they are both all too willing to accept that fact.

The author portrayed this quite well without it feeling exhaustive. I did feel bad for the MC to repeat the same mistakes from his previous life, but I also think that sometimes rebirth isn’t all it’s made out to be. In the MCs case we get to see how no matter how much he wishes things could be different, his choices still led him to repeat history which proves that perhaps you can’t escape your fate.

Overall the relationship was unhealthy from the start and in all honesty I don’t think the realism stuck to the end, which was the only disappointment for me, having such a strong premise with complex and frustrating characters- the ending fell flat with a very forced fluff type relationship. Maybe I’ll just being fussy but it felt really off tone after reading such struggles for over 100 chapters.

The ML has serious psychological issues that will affect their relationship not just from their first interaction but all the built up emotion from the 3 years of grief. The MC has serious self-esteem issues and trust issues that will always show itself in their relationship. I think the author set herself up with fantastic characters but even she was out of her league when it came to closing off their characters.

I really liked the MLs brother, definitely a favorite character of mine. All the other characters were suitable and well rounded. I’d have liked to see more punishment for the brother in law but I guess he got his ending.

Overall not as angsty as some have made it out to be. I feel like the characters are complex and realistic and the story played out as most likely as it could with their past interactions.

Very captivating overall so worth the read if you’re into relationship centred plots with heavy emphasis on emotional turmoil and bad choices.

I've read a few of the other 188 books and once I heard this one was going to be getting a thai drama adaptation, I decided it was time to read it. I feel a bit disappointed by it? I was expecting a bunch of angst like her other novels and I think this one is the least angsty I've read from this author so far. Overall, still enjoyed it but it might be my least favorite novel from her so far.

Summary: ZW is a stuntman for WYD. YMX has been in love with WYD for a long time but WYD is engaged to his sister so he can't chase after him. YMX meets ZW by mistaking him for WYD from the back and soon they get together, all without ZW knowing that YMX likes WYD. ZW tries for a year to get YMX to love him and one night YMX gets drunk and ZW finds out that he's been a substitute all along. He wants to break up, YMX says no then YMX prevents him from taking WYD's role in a movie causing ZW to take a role in the mountains where he dies.

I read this back in 2018, yet I still remember everything (I plan on rereading soon)

If you want drama, angst, miscommunication, and just a whole lot of chaos and hurt yet in the end it’s all worth it. Than this is the Chinese novel for you. It was such a page turner, highly entertaining, highly toxic but so good, you couldn’t stop reading.

It’s long, I remember I read a translation of this on Wattpad and I would spend nights just awake and reading this, I didn’t care if I would loss sleep as long as I got to read this. This was the first Chinese novel I actually read and finished and I loved every second of it. It was so dramatic, overly dramatic in fact, sometimes I wanted to rip the hair outta my scalp at how eye rolling this novel was, but in the end it was all worth it, I don’t care what anyone else says, this was such a great novel, highly entertaining, and will highly recommend.

So this was a book I picked up after starting watching the adaption (My Stand In starring Poom and Up). This is one hell of a red flag relationship at its beginning (it gets sweet and so much better in the second half) but wowza our main guy needs a hug and someone to banish all the heapings of bad everything that is happening in his life. It was fun, like a lot of danmei it can get bogged down a bit and there is the required 11th hour dramatics. Overall though, the story had me smiling (after yelling for a day straight at the colossal bad luck)

The translation I have is very good, but I have a complaint for the author and I find this is true in a lot of romance I read. Can we please stop with the overly creative euphemisms used? “Meat hole”, “baby stick”, “middle piece” are some of the few off the top of my head that just stopped me mid read. I do know some are a direct translation of a slang word many are not though.

The book was kinda draggy for me... Like the misunderstandings/ angsts seems to be repeated? I mean, there's transmigration involved but other than that, it's written in the style of slice-of-life in the entertainment industry. Not much foray into acting/ modelling but more on the stunt double aspect I guess? It wasn't really written in depth so we don't even get the names/ plot of the productions.

The arguments between MC and ML seems quite illogical, but then when people are in love their brain don't work. I'll give that a pass. BUTTT ML was violent towards MC, I mean.. it's just a phone but still... Kinda give me the irks. I find MC to be a bit too whiny for his personality when arguing with ML. 2nd ML was annoying AF, other than being sticky he didn't really pursue/ treat MC well tbh.

3 stars, but for the smut and occasional angst I'll give an extra star.

Not the first 188 novels I read... but still very draining emotionally, body and soul.
Need something sweet after this!

Professional Body Double 职业替身 by Shui Qian Cheng is:
+ danmei novel
+ 21 +++
+ C-Entertainment scene
+ Reincarnation? or a second chance
+ The young ML who asked to be slapped for his toxic behavior. Arrogant and red flags!
+ Older MCs who work and have a steady income. Good at talking and enjoyed life before meeting ML.
+ Stories about substitute roles being substitutes for substitutes
+ Angst and karma from another 188 series

My favorite 188 Scum gong group book ranking so far:
1. Sissy
2. Winner Takes All
3. Professional Body Double
4. Additional Inheritance
5. In Love With an Idiot

I really love this one because I love it when the ML suffers and he basically thought that the MC was dead for 2-3 years and he was in shambles the entire time. I enjoy seeing that! I would say that this is more angsty compared to the other novels as well because death is involved.

It’s good… not like Alpha predator good but still good… pretty entertaining…I guess I just missed the extreme painful emotions that you can find in her other book.. this one hurts but not as intense as AP

Many people are not happy with the ending but a heart wants what it wants.
A really well-written book. I wanted to punch the ML as well but he suffered enough for me.
So I'll recommend it to everyone who like angst.
