This was a solid rejected mate story with a twist at the end. Definitely a cliffhanger, and I’ll most likely read book 2.
The story started out solid, explaining a bit of the world Mairin lives in, as it doesn’t appear to be the regular world. There are walls up and different packs took different territories in the UK and Ireland. We do later find out that there is a regular human world with amenities like Netflix, so I didn’t totally understand the walls and treaty. When Mairin is tossed in the sea by the alpha rejecting her, she end ups in the Fallen pack territory (i think Ireland).
So this pack has 4 alphas, which is unheard of elsewhere, and we quickly come to find out they know and have been searching for Mai since she was lost at 12, with her memories also disappearing. This is where the story fell short for me.
So the guys obviously all know her, but they don’t tell her that. They don’t seem to bother to find out much more about her background, what’s happened to her in the past 5 years. Also, this story starts when she’s 18, and the guys are supposedly 1 year older than her. It felt like they were years older than her, especially since they had taken over this pack, so that part was just confusing. And with Trey, one of the guys considers him a son (instead of a little brother), and he had been a rejected baby from the other pack and was now 11, so?
I also didn’t like that they kept all information from her. She was kept inside the house, didn’t explore the pack outside, and we don’t see that much interaction with her and the guys. It seemed like missed opportunities, maybe with how short this book is, with a little more there could’ve been a bit more meaningful interactions between the characters.
I’m not too sure where the angel thing she read about is going, but when one of the guys mentioned the whole 4 parts of a soul thing, I guess he was talking about them. Again, not sure where this is going, but I’m intrigued to find out the meaning behind it all. Especially with how the mate who rejected her is still after her death. I will say I was glad that there wasn’t any magical feelings between them just because they were chosen to be mates, and she’s left pining for him. Definitely a fresh take that I appreciated.
