Reconquista Chronicles #3

The Lord of Valencia

Rate this book
Sent into exile once more Don Rodrigo de Vivar has just Will Redbeard and two warriors for companions. Over the next years, he creates the legend of El Cid defeating enemy after enemy. Fighting overwhelming odds, he succeeds every time until, at last, he has his fiefdom of Valencia. This is the final chronicle in the series and details the last eighteen years of the life of the man known as El Cid. Although this is the last in the series it is a stand-alone book. Forget the film and read the reality of the man who was the greatest knight of his age; some would say, any age!

I was born in 1950 in Lancashire and attended a boy’s grammar school. After qualifying as an English and Drama teacher in 1972, I worked in the North East of England for the next 35 years. During that time I did write, mainly plays, pantos and musicals for the students at the three schools in which I worked.

When I stopped teaching I set up my own consultancy firm and worked as an adviser in schools and colleges in the North East of England. The new Conservative Government ended that avenue of work and in 2010 I found that I had time on my hands; having started work at the age of 15 I found the lack of work not to my liking and used the time to research the Roman invasion of Britain and begin to create a novel. The result was The Sword of Cartimandua.

My decision to begin writing was one of the best I have ever taken.

El Cid and Will Redbeard

This was the third and final book in this series, El Cid gets his fiefdom and becomes an equal with the Christian kings. El Cid and Will Redbeard honorable men, brothers to the end.

This series is historical fiction and you know some of it is made up, but you can see how the life and times of El Cid might have played out from his right hand, Will Redbeard, and how he became the hero of a nation.

There are also a couple of maps, historical references, a glossary and authors notes in the back of the book.

If you have read the other two books in this series than finish it with this one, you won't be disappointed.

I loved it. A fitting conclusion to the 3 book series “Reconquista Chronicles”. Being American I grew up reading of the knights of England and France but walking the Camino de Santiago steered me toward learning more Spanish history. This book and the precious two weave the story of El Cid from a small boy to his death. The story was enhanced by the inclusion of Muslim Moors coming from the south challenging the various feudal Christian kingdoms who at the time in 1100’s were also fighting themselves.

Warlord

A fitting tribute to a great. Knight, El Cid. William Redbeard, brings him to light with his excellent narration and description of the battle scenes over 3 chronicles and ultimately El Cids Final chapter with the consequent outcome of the final battle for Valencia. As well as an excellent read a fitting tribute to a hero

El Cid

Once again a book that I really enjoyed reading. While the real history of Rodrigo may never be known, this was a very good story about the actual person and believable.

A different but acceptable ending compared to the movie.

Fabulous series

A great set of three books creating in the page the life of the CID. Full of human weakness and greatness, great characters, well described battles. A fabulous read.

An excellent descriptive account of the Moor invasion of Iberia which brought about the unification of Spain after the death of Rodrigo de Vivar. . The fightback will follow as the Moors return to the Holy Land as a result of the Crusades and the orders of Pope Urban.

The final installment of the trilogy was surprisingly much better than the first two books. It felt like the author was searching for things to make up a trilogy when the story could've been more appropriately told in one novel.
