*this is for the whole series from my old blog*

Mizuki is amazing, but that might just might be my boner speaking. I'm a total hoe for small boobies and ecchi done good. I like my ecchi being provocative without being porn outright. Though let me tell you Boku Girl actually has some chapters that are very porny, though they censor the D and V sadly 😭💔

Let me not mistake you, this is heavily and about Mizuki's turmoil and gender, but also very sexualized. Though it is very sexual, very ecchi, and has some very common stereotypes of a gender bender (like how do girls pee), it's actually an interesting one.

I can't say if it's respectful of transgender because I'm not one and so I can't say what they'd think or feel while reading this manga. Not going to defend this manga one way or another, I just take it for the funny and ecchi scenes. But I'd like to emphasize that this isn't about being transgender.

Mizuki fights with both wanting to turn into a male again because he likes Fujiwara, but also coming to terms that he's always liked more feminine things that got repressed and come out when he gets turned into a girl. If anything, Mizuki is very gender neutral and can pass for both genders whichever way they go hehe 👌

First of all, I must say there's some very sexual harassment towards Mizuki even as a male, more so as a female, but it's not done in a serious way. It's all taken in a comedy way. Let it not mistake you, this is 80% comedy, 20% ecchi... Okay maybe more, more like half ecchi, half comedy. The point being, this is hilarious and made me laugh so much. Most of the funny moments come from Takeru, Mizuki's best friend, having the dokis now that Mizuki is a female and is constantly around him ungarded. Also from jealously when males start coming to Mizuki.

I must say that 90% of the cast is either bisexual or pansexual, they're fine with whichever gender Mizuki actually is, and don't care. Though they're mostly used for funny/gag moments, it still shows a really accepting world, especially when Mizuki being a girl now comes out to school. There's never anyone bullying or in disgusted, just acceptance and Mizuki being desired by males and females.

This might be why I like this manga a lot, there's all kind of sexualities, without ever feeling like they're putting down anyone. A rather mature thing that I enjoy, because sure this is a mature almost R18 manga, but a lot of mature mangas aren't as mature in their stories and characters. Which is not the case here. And you know, it feels good, having a mature manga with mature themes that have maturity in their thinking.

No one is gonna give Boku Girl accolades for a brilliant plot or anything, but I give it all the accolades when it comes to gender, sexual attraction, diversity of sexes and overall presentation.

And hey, I'm not saying this just because it gave me one of the biggest non-existential boners ever. I spent a week or so thinking and remembering this, and just being overall horny 😹👌 But hey, how can I not when Mizuki is cute and sexy?

There's a lot of scenes of Mizuki growing into a now female body and discovering what it's capable of, in a sexual sense, that are never pervy just sexy and niiiceee. Mostly helped by Takeru, and his elephant dick 😂😂😂👌, because while Takeru only ever saw Mizuki as a male, despite Mizuki being mistaken as a girl, once Mizuki turns female Takeru's boner is ever present.

Takeru is actually a really good friend, and is always supporting Mizuki, trying to help turn Mizuki male because that's what Mizuki want. In case you can't see, my ship is Mizuki x Takeru. This manga is finally completely translated (by fans thank you so much!!!), but I won't tell you who is the winning partner, if Takeru or Fujiwara, or if Mizuki returns to being male or female 😳

This is super highly regarded by me, I have high standards for ecchi, I don't know if it's because I'm female but lots of ecchi done for males don't work for me, so I was pleasantly surprised this did. Might also be because I'm a huge comedy fan, and this hits all the home runs with just comedy alone! 👌👌

So if you like ecchi or/and gender bender, or want to try one, this might just be the one for you~

So far as ecchi gender-bender manga goes, Boku Girl is about as funny and thoughtful an exploration of gender as you're likely to find. It's that thoughtfulness that makes this series special.

Mizuki's endless gauntlet of comedic scrapes and erotic near-misses are all fairly par for the course, but there's something about the attention paid to their internal struggle that sets Boku Girl apart. Mizuki is not just a random unlucky sap, we gradually learn; Loki seems to have picked a target that already struggled with their gender identity as an androgynous boy and the expectations and constraints attached to their manhood. As such, Mizuki is not the average gender-bender protagonist. Rather than only desperately wanting to return to being male, they also eventually begin to see the appeal of life as a woman, which opens up a whole new can of worms for them to contend with.

Another of the most interesting choices Sugito makes is taking the magical chaos that animates the plot and personifying it as the pint-sized Loki, who comes down to Earth to better torment her prey in person. It's a fun twist that adds an extra main character and cleverly gives Sugito a way to pull levers in the story in a seamless, winking way. But Loki is not just a simple plot device and at times seemingly struggles to justify her trickster impulses against Mizuki's caring, empathetic nature. Ultimately this leads to the most disappointing element of the series: just as we're given more hints that she might be approaching some character development regarding her treatment of Mizuki, the series rushes to a close before anything can come of it. Loki is suddenly whisked away to end the story and the impish little scamp we've come to know and love is reduced down to a simple plot device after all. But we have to assume Sugito and his team weren't given much notice before the series ended and it's maybe not fair to fault Boku Girl too hard for not quite sticking the landing.

Sadly, Boku Girl has never received an official translation to English. So to avoid detouring into a critique of the hodgepodge of fan translations that cover its eleven volumes, I feel like I can only comment on the broad strokes: The art is competently funny and sexy and the overarching storyline is entertaining, character-focused, and generally well-paced (the last volume aside). And for an erotic comedy series published nearly a decade ago in Japan it does a commendable job of treating Mizuki's fluid gender and sexual identity with respect. Definitely worth a read if you're a fan of the genre. Manga fans in search of a more nuanced, realistic exploration of transgender topics may want to try other titles, such as The Bride Was a Boy or Wandering Son, Vol. 1.

People say there is no such thing as fate. Then explain this to me: how I, off all people, had happened to randomly find this manga online? It's like it was written specifically for me. And how random it was? Just imagine you are watching a random funny video with farting horse, and 10 minutes later, this video leads you to the best World War II book you ever read. That's how random it was.
And what about the manga, is it good?
Well, when i read the synopsis, I expected a fan fic or something like that. It surprised me how good the art is and how funny and relatable the story was. So why only 4 out of 5? I knew this manga covered controversial topic and I expected to see some hardcore stuff and yet a few times I couldn't belive wtf is going on. It's like when you reading book like Game of Thrones. You expecting Magic, dragons and sex and from time to time you're getting slapped by unexpected incest. But still i was enjoying myself, so probably I will return to this in some time.

Breaks zero gender boundaries tbh (literally the storyline is, will he stay male to date a woman or become female to date a man?) but a fun read and a cute one. I enjoyed the art.
