The Monarch
After a barren mating that had lasted just shy of two years, Avery is hell bond on living a life away from power-hungry bastards. And if she can help someone along the way, she would gladly make that extra effort. Finally managing to be in charge of her own life, she reaches out to help others overcome the difficulties of losing a mate, no matter the consequences. It doesn't come as a surprise, when she finds herself running a shelter for recently widowed or battered she-wolves. Only one thing remains a hardship: raising so many pups without the strong, tough, manly supervision. The small group of she-wolves and pups increases in numbers and becomes a movement that no longer can be underestimated or constricted in the limits of her childhood home.
In times of uncertainty and opposition, with Alphas threatening to overrun their little establishment, Avery has no choice but to venture out of her comfort zone in the search of the combat instructor who could teach basic survival skills to the cubs. If what she fears ever becomes a reality, she would be glad that they would stand a chance in the power struggle, where Enforces is nothing but a brute force to achieve the goals of power-hungry Alphas. Naively planning to secure the perfect combat instructor, Avery does not leave room to account for nature that comes at her with a full swing. This one started out great. I loved Jon's & Avery's interactions and how their relationship grew. However, about halfway, it started to deviate away from them and including all the characters from the first book picking up where that one left off. It was good to see where they were all at and what was going on with the Monarchy however, it took away from Jon and Avery. Which didn't make sense as it was their book and their story. We got to see Nessa's and Marcus' relationship bloom and bear fruit but only a fast paced epilogue giving Avery closure with her parents and siblings. No fruit bearing for them was shown or a glimpse of them settled in the future.
The ending didn't feel like one, it was kind of left up in the air. I guess it makes sense since the author started the 3rd book which I'm guessing will pick up from there. I just wish it was a better ending. Then, not to mention, the constant changes of points of views - 4+ in each chapter - that took place from the middle point forward made for a choppy read (I kept losing who was speaking). I waited years for this book to be finished so I could read it. I guess I billed up my expectations because of it. Sorry!
