An invigorating introduction to Spanish translation for advanced learners—now in its third edition
En otras palabras provides advanced learners of Spanish with hands-on manipulation of grammatical, lexical, and cultural detail through the practice of translation (traducción). This challenging and enjoyable textbook—now in its third edition with updated texts, new exercises that reinforce concepts found in previous chapters, and additional partner and group activities—presents students with incisive grammar explanation, relevant lexical information, and a wide variety of translation texts and exercises in order to increase mastery of the Spanish language.
The two-part structure of the book allows students to work with grammatical concepts, the building blocks of texts, in the first half before moving on to a series of chapters on specialized usage, from sports and advertising to medicine. En otras palabras contains texts for Spanish-to-English translation as well as English-to-Spanish translation. Learning how to translate also provides students with invaluable experience of the inseparability of language and culture. Featured texts include authentic materials such as folktales, news articles, and legal documents that allow students to wrestle with the challenges of translation and learn to correct common errors.
Designed for a semester-long course, En otras palabras will provide advanced students with an invigorating linguistic workout and serve as an effective introduction to the practice of translation.
An online Instructor’s Manual is provided free of charge to those who adopt the text in their classrooms.
This was the textbook we used for a college practicum of translation from English to Spanish. This book is presented in clear language. I found it fairly easy to read as a learner of Spanish. The grammar explanations are practical and easy to follow. The exercises work well in a classroom setting or for individual practice. The text gives an overview of translation practices and the challenges of translation, without pretending to be an exhaustive preparatory manual. In fact, this is a great text for someone who may be thinking of entering English-Spanish or Spanish-English translation, since it gives a basic introduction while also alerting the reader to how complex the work of translation really is, so that the practices in the book are merely something of a starting point. Great resource for an anglophone interested in refining their Spanish usage.
