Breviario de mitología clásica #1-3

Rate this book

Those gods were a mischievous bunch of buggers. Sensous and promiscuous with a few notable exceptions. And what about those titans. They lost a legendary battle against the gods but still one of them, Prometheus, acted as the demiurge creating us from ashes, bringing us the needed fire. Not to mention that you couldn't do a step in ancient Greece without stumbling across a demigod or a larger than life hero. A time even more bloody than the old testament.

Lots of recurring patterns in those myths. Mixing with gods will not end good. Choosing one will anger the others. Prophecies will come true, especially those involving to not father a son. He will be born and devastate his father. Multiple most beautiful women in the world, a certain recipe for dead kings and suitors. Greece must have been full of monsters, to be slain by some hero to fulfill a task.

Köhlmeier retells the well-known tales from Greek mythology. Oedipus, the battle of Troy, the life and death of the heroes Herakles and Theseus, the odyssey. He doesn't stop there. Myths are told of which I didn't know much more than the title (Tantalos, Aeneas, Pan). Also myths I never heard of before (Zagreus?).

Sometimes Köhlmeier mentions variants. More often, he chooses one most to his liking and retells it in his own moody interpretation. Not always the most conventional one as comparisons with the myths on Wikipedia show. He firmly sticks with Iason being a swaggerer only excelling in charm. He changes the Roman Amor back to Eros in Amor and Psyche. Other Roman sources are used for Aeneas and with Ovid.

He ends with Dionysos to whom he attributes the role of the saviour in Greek mythology. When he joins in with Apoll in managing the oracle of Delphi, the combined traits of both layed a foundation for another saviour, Jesus Christ. An interesting thought.

I didn't really like Köhlmeier's style. He's acting like a cozy old fairytale teller. It is obvious by reappearing repetitions that each tale was written to stand on its own but with a view to the whole project when he references to tales to be told another time. But this book isn't about style. I read it to refresh and structure my fragmentary knowledge of Greek mythology. Köhlmeier did a great job aggregating countless deviating sources and relieving the reader from the task to extract the most important ones. I enjoy his personal assessments of gods and when he puts myths into context; with the bible, the Nibelungen or later revisions and variants. These strengths are the benefit of this book compared to merely researching sagas on Wikipedia.

I doubt that I will reach my goal of having a better command of Greek mythology in the long run. Too many difficult names, too many similarities, too confusing relations, too bad memory. I found myself turning back to previous stories often when someone reappears. What was it again that Bellerophon did? Who fathered whom? Weren't they relatives? But hopefully, a small percentage of knowledge will remain in the long-term.

Let me close with Köhlmeier's closing dedication: "Im Ganzen gesehen, war's für meine Familie". Funny for a cynic like me who interprets this as a job to earn money which his other books didn't do sufficiently.

Mixed feelings about it. The stories are told in an engaging way, with some touches of humor here and there. But the humor, or his opinions, I felt were sometimes completely out of place (especially when he talks about rape lightly). And for the stories themselves, the order was a bit off sometimes. It was hard to keep up with who was who, especially at the beginning.
