The book focuses on a new strata of life viz death. It tells us about the two types of people, those who understand life and suicide, yet don't cross it. The other talks about the people who take their own lives.

There is a story about a farmer who is about to commit suicide, he meets a girl on the tracks.

There are many people like that who feel that they have lost everything in life, yet a small incident can make them change their decision.
This ensures that there is a lot of positivity in our lives and in the story.

Overall, this book will sheds light in those virtues which socities usually neglect, that is to teach the importance of life.

“Suicide, a thin line between life and death
One who sees it, doesn’t cross it
One who doesn’t see it, cross it”

I am still wondering why is this book not yet made into a movie!
This is a gripping story a farmer , Subodh, who is so debt trapped that he finds no meaning to life and want to rescue himself by suiciding . He is a farmer in Maharastra. Just few minutes before he meets a little girl ‘Vaani’ whose sweet talks awakens his wisdom . Moreover, her magical lunchbox is like a Eureka moment for him. This story has addressed the National issue of farmers committing suicide. Read this gripping tale of a suicide survivor !
I felt that every big movement is result of hope, determination and action of One person. Rest all join to make it a movement and help to accomplish someone’s dream for common good. Also, I feel we are too quick to blame God, we never know what he has planned for us. Moreover, Universe is trying to help us if we can pick up the signals it is giving. Even hard work and determination can change destiny. Opportunities are everywhere if we are willing look with open hearts and minds. Wisdom has nothing to do with age. It is also a story of Patience and persistence.
The language and writing style are so gripping. Glossary is enriched. The story is a complete page turner. Among many, one thing I really liked was the use of analogy at places. Like in one of the scenes both protagonists stepped out of a building and were disheartened, there the author has beautifully used the weather condition to demonstrate the same condition.

The cover page send chills through my body. I was lost for a moment and was staring at the cover for a minute. I was not sure if I was ready to read a suicide story as recently I have heard about so many people committing it. But , when I read the blurb I had an urge to understand the mental condition of someone just before suicide and also what made Subodh overcome all adversities. The Title gives a ray of hope and is in stark contrast to the hanging rope from the tree.

This book reminded me two superhit movies: Lagaan and Manjhi, the mountain man

If you are looking for motivation in life and you feel your hopes are hopeless, this book is perfect read for you to instill positiviness and hope In you . Yes initially keep tissues handy, as this may churn your soul in initial pages!

This paragraph has spoilers . So, Kindly skip it if you are not looking for spoilers:
Author has depicted the story from many point of views . Like what happens to life of widowed women and children after the farmer commits suicide. Also, how can banks and its employees help the farmers.
Also, it shows the guilt of a landlord because of whom two farmers committed suicide. The use of right resources at right place and time can be very fruitful.

This is the book where cover and blurb says alot. A great, important lot.

Hang On : A Second Wind is a important book. It should be published in many different languages to reach every bit and pieces of India.
Book address the most important and alarming issue, 'farmer's suicide in India'.
India is a country where 50% of population is dependent on agriculture and every day 28 people dependent on farming die by suicide in India.

This is a story of Subodh, poor farmer who is drown in bank debt tries to commit suicide but saved by a little girl, Vanhi and that's when Subodh realize his mistake and his new journey to help farmer's begin. In this journey he received a great deal of support from Stephan Noronha.

In one conversation Stephan explains Subodh reason for so many farmer's suicide,

'The reason are many financial stress, bad debts, poverty and drought like what we are facing now'

'At the same time, depression, mental illness, alcohol and drug abuse are also some of the factors responsible for their dreams'.

'The most important one for such death, is ofcourse the literacy level which is often ignored'.

Through Subodh the book also tries to give a solution to the drought.

The book is written in a fast paced manner. Language is easy and simple. The storyline engages you within few pages. It's a must read.

Hang On
A second wind
Author Name Eshwarmurthy G Pillai
This book contains a story based on a topic of great contemporary relevance. The central character is a farmer named Subodh. He is a farmer. He also attempts suicide when he is unable to repay his bank loan. The railway track was selected for this purpose. There he meets Vanhi, a schoolgirl, and the boy's behavior deter him from committing suicide.
He lives forgetting his sorrows. The presence of Stephen Norona and the little boy boosted his confidence. Then incredible changes happen. Spreading the message to other farmers.Suicide is not a solution to anything and when a life is lost it gives loss and burden to the family who lived in that person’s hope. Such messages are exemplary for others.

This issue is also a topic of thought today. Let this be a message to all the farming community in this age of increasing farmer suicides. The glory of the author's presentation is evident. The simplicity of the language should be emphasized. The activities for the advancement of the farmers are very exciting. And enlightens them. Good ideas and well written. Nice cover design I recommended.

Hang On: A Second Wind by Eshwarmurthy G Pillai is a work of fiction that depicts the plight of poor and debt-ridden farmers of India that are committing suicide due to various reasons.

The novel features the story of one such farmer named Subodh from Rajgad of Maharashtra. When he goes to commit suicide, he is accosted by a small girl who calls him Aaba (means father). When Subodh listens to her sad story his thinking changes immediately and he goes back to fight off the evils of poverty and bad loans. It is an inspiring story and I think it should be circulated among farmers so that we can stop ‘mass farmer suicide’.

The novel's strong message is that one should not commit suicide rather fight the adverse situations. Well-written and well-edited, it’s a simple story with a powerful characters and message. I liked the story and I finished reading the book in some days and was able to grasp each and every thing that I came across. I recommend this novel to the farmer population of my country. All in all, a good novel!

Recently,I finished this amazing book.I can say this book is fictional as well as nonfictional.

The characters of the book are powerful and relatable. The message and the morals from the book felt very good.

The main thing which I loved is the narration. Author has beautifully narrated this whole story.

Suicide is something which every human at some point thinks. But at those times one needs to get a different perspective.

I loved how the author has mentioned everything. It made me feel good while reading it.

The language in which its written is simple and lucid.
So anyone can read this book easily.

I felt a thrill after reading this book.

📍 it beautifully covered such a serious issues, which is being ignored from an outer perspective.

📍Suicide, is such an issue which is need to be dealt with a very seriousness, I mean, even talking about it. It's not like any common general issue.

📍Moreover, I was extra conscious about the manner in which the story is told, the story telling part is good. But, if there would be more details, it would be awesome.

📍Overall, its a good read especially when you need something like perspective reading.

Fiction is the genre which i don't usually read but when books like this comes, there is no debate. There are not many books which are 132 pages long.So as I read the blurb my eagerness increased.

And my eagerness was not in vain.Reading this book was quite a good decision. After finishing this book I had an insight.

🍀 The book intelligently covers a great aspect of life. The aspect is death itself. Somewhere from the book it is said that one who can see the difference between life and suicide does not cross it, one who does crosses it.

🍀 Story about a farmer, who happens to kill himself because he siffered tremendous loss in his field. The farmer when attempted suicide, he happens to notice a young girl who was also there near the railway track.

🍀 Without giving anymore spoilers, I would say, what a wonderful book that revolves around the story of the man who thinks he can win over his mental state of suicide. And at the end, not only he won his life, he also taught the readers the importance of positive perspective in our lives.

🍀 Overall, A book that will shed light in those virtues which socities usually neglect, that is to teach the importance of life.

My review -
In a current scenario , reading such mindful book left me speechless. A pain of farmer who had no intention to keep the loan on their head however due to natural calamity they all had to face such disaster where they are helpless. And thats the point when they left me with choice except Suicide in their mind.
Our protagonist Subodh is a farmer Who was shattered after piling up huge debt on his head when drought ruined almost all farmers life in his vicinity. In distress he decided to end up his life by committing suicide.
A small SchoolGirl Vanhi impresses me a lot,who changed his thought and turned him back to fight and live .
And yes I totally agreed by the author that "Committing Suicide is not the ultimate solution ."
This one step might ease the farmer but his family will suffer more without him .
This problem has to discuss widely to come up with concrete solution. So that in future none of our farmer with take such brutal step.
A must read to all, which will enlighten your thoughts to give back to this society and lead a meaningful life.

When Premchand was writing the classics of Indian writing, his primary focus was to depict the social conditions prevalent in those times and bring the atrocities faced by the people to light. They became classics because of the subjects that they explored more than anything else. “Hang On a Second Wind” by Eshwarmurthy G Pillai is one of the pioneering books that explore the burning issues of contemporary India and how the common man, who is less common and more of a hero in some sense, faces the situations. These situations form the heart of the matter in the present-day Indian media and top story highlights.
Pillai’s “Hang On a Second Wind” talks about the central issue of farmers and their conditions, which reach the headlines when farmers end their lives but otherwise not even close to it. In this sense, the short novel becomes a social commentary on the social divide and discrimination, which results in farmers being in debt, which seems like an unending spiral of woes and worries. The aspects of the social relevance of Pillai’s text are unignorable and can not be undermined. It also opens the eyes of the readers to the serious issue that challenges society at large and yet remains unnoticed due to a variety of reasons. By bringing different lives together on one canvas of “Hang On a Second Wind,” Pillai not only touches the different corners of one world but also shows the different lives people lead and how each of them have their share of atrocities.
From another perspective, Subodh’s life is also symbolic of the fates of many farmers, but not all (probably none) are lucky to find a Vahni to give them their moments of epiphany and inspire them to set on an altogether different path filled with grit and determination. Subodh breaks the ground with his newfound self and wins the reader’s hearts with his resilience and hope to achieve what he has dreamt of all along. At the same time, “Hang On a Second Wind” may become a study of motivation and optimism for many readers and the ones who are interested in reading the genre. But on closer reading, examining the facts which had led to Subodh’s ultimate decision while lying to his family are more significant and worth noting. They show the dark side of the Indian mainland, which is hardly mentioned in any kind of media these days. Pillai does monumental work with his “Hang On a Second Wind” and makes the difference by striking the chord and making the readers ponder.
Pillai follows a different plot concept where he brings the probable end in the beginning and takes the plot in a different direction. This makes his book unpredictable, and the short chapters ensure that the readers enjoy every bit of the story while they think along. Through this work, they also go on a journey into the depths of the Indian system and how things work in the remotest corners of the country, which are yet to experience the effects of the digital revolution.
Alongside, “Hang On a Second Wind” also raises critical issues of the social divide, education and literacy, worth and significance of human life, the fact that inspiration can be found in anyone or anywhere, the delicate nature and power of human emotions, hope and the effects it can have on lives as a whole, the potent result of unity and teamwork and how people become victims due to the games of fate. Pillai also gives the silent message that everyone is responsible for their fate through the decisions they make. He tells the readers that it is not entirely the game of fate, but also what one chooses that casts the difference. Hence, the short novel opens to different perspectives to be examined.
As the central character, Subodh comes across as the representative of his farmer class and mirrors the problems the farmers of any corner of the world would be facing. He incarnates the worries, stress, and tensions that pervade as routine in their lives. His changed situation from the earlier generations to his present condition speaks volumes of the changed state of farmers from being prosperous to paupers. This is eye-opening and disturbing for both the readers and society. Through Vanhi, Pillai in his “Hang On a Second Wind” shows the fact that hope and inspiration do not need special corners to appear from. They can appear in front of a person from anywhere at any time. It is the person’s prudence to understand the gravity of the situation and make use of the opportunity they have.
Eshwarmurthy G Pillai’s “Hang On a Second Wind” is a book that should be read by all readers, whether they read fiction or non-fiction, not just to understand the criticality of the situation but also to set their brain in the direction which is solution-oriented.

The author has touched on a delicate and sensitive topic of suicide and narrated in simple and lucid language for easy reading. Using the template of the farmer, the author attempts to bring to the fore the silent killer..Suicide..an under reported malaise which ails not only the farmers but a wide swath of population across the globe..it gnaws at the psyche of a desperate father trying to send off his kids and wife away on a dinghy on rough seas from war torn Syria..to the blue collar workers in Coal mines in an environmentally conscious America..it preys on the minds of an isolated society shut off from human interactions and spiritual moorings, ravaged by the pandemic. The mind is a marvelous and complex machine..it can color a persons consciousness depending on the people around you, the self beliefs, reinforcing self talks and projects an imagery which could be rosy or outright suicidal.. Despite the morbid front title page of the book, the ensuing chapters takes us on a journey of hope, grit, comradery and importance of family, supporting friends and a social net.. I have personally experienced how close one can get to the fine line that the author dwells on.. a very fulfilling and good read...Congratulations Eshwar and Thank you for choosing this topic and providing hope and toolkits through the story!!

It’s not hidden from the world that every year India loses many of its farmers due to bad conditions and mainly because of agricultural loans. Farmers take loan to perform better with their crop but many a time unwanted rain or draught plays the spoilsport. Finding no option of paying the loan back, many commit suicide.

E. Pillai’s novel “Hang On A Second Wind” brings a similar fate story for us. It features Subodh Kadale from Maharashtra. Due to no rains, his agricultural loan turns into bad debts. Finding no option and bereaved of hope, he opts to commit suicide by running into a railway track. However, fate plays its role, a small girl interrupts him. She was the victim of similar fate. Her father committed suicide, which caused a lot of problem to her family.

Taking the life in right direction from here onwards, Subodh bows not to die but instead work hard to recover from his bad debt. Rest of the novel is about his struggle with the society and himself. Some people help him to go ahead in life but mainly it was his struggle that shines in the end. Subodh sets example for others and begins a sort of awareness campaign.

Subodh’s story is incredible, I have heard of similar stories in news and social media. This book brought me close to one such story and I felt motivated on one side and felt sad for the farmers suffering under the bad loans. This book is written in that direction to support them. You must try it once.

Sucide burning question

Farmers and their problems a burning question since ages. The author has taken a tremendous effort in showing their pain, a story of being N thinking positive. Sucide a momentary action of thoughts. In that moment if someone intervenes , it all goes away. You should read because one learns good lesson from it. The toll it takes in the persons and others. The love and care neededto tend that heart

“Suicide, a thin line between life and death. One who sees it, doesn’t cross it. One who doesn’t see it, crosses it.”
Have you ever wondered what goes down in the lives of those who provide us with one of our biggest survival requirements- food? India- a country where a gamut of people are employed in the agriculture sector, is also a country with surprisingly high suicide rates of farmers.
“HANG ON- A Second Wind” by Eshwarmurthy Pillai talks about many such issues that the farmers residing in our country have been facing continually since a long time. Unlike the most of us, who turn on the television, watch disturbing news, and then turn it off thinking bleh! What can we do about this, the author actually did. When asked how he got the idea of writing this book, the author shared that the journey began in 2015, wherein he use to hear and read a lot about farmers committing suicide nationwide. The situation was pathetic and deteriorating day by day, year after year. When he digged more, it was quite surprising to know that the farmers suicide was happening for many years and in big numbers. Farmers from all the Indian states had committed suicide. As he dived deeper into the data, he came across surprising revelations related to debts, droughts, and depression. In order to get practical experience, the author visited many villages and remote places in drought affected regions and gathered ample evidence. He aimed at making a short film with a sad ending (just like the reality) but with proper guidance from his friends and well- wishers, he settled on writing it in the form of a book with an inspirational ending. This inspiring, ground-breaking read is there to make everyone realize just how beautiful life is. And that suicide is never an option. According to the author, “HANG ON – A Second Wind” will feature in various Indian languages very soon. The author also intends to launch a series of the book with the Title – HANG ON, which will be launched in the next 2 years. The book has recently been nominated for Litfest 2021 by the NE8x competition globally. It is fragile, empathetic, bold with finely drawn details and the truth about the situation of farmers in the country. We applaud the writer’s writing style for bringing the book out in such a fervent manner.

The language is simple and easy to understand.

This book is recommended to each and every person. A book of full of hopes and courage. A motivating kind of read. There is a ray of hope in each and every situation of life.

My perspective:
The author has done an amazing work for writing this book. This is a very serious and yet the most ignored topic. The characters and the story are perfectly narrated. I would like to see this book in a form of a movie too in the upcoming years.

▶ A tale of HOPE: Battling Farmer Suicides

• Insights: God works in mysterious ways. This story is about a farmer named Subodh who is carrying along the heavy burden of debts and is contemplating an escape, a permanent one from life. As he treads in that direction, he is stopped midway for a school girl Vanhi who brings about a massive transformation in his perspective with a simple prop of that of a lunchbox. He inspires in a way that he starts thinking that he is at the helm of a key change- he can save so many farmers from the drought by helping them store water during the rains. He understands that he succumbs to the tussle of ending his life- it would mean the death of not just him but also that of the Indian farmer community. Narrated in a simple planner, the story is not only a fight with failure but also with one's own self.

• REVIEW: Farmer suicides is a subject well debated in our country. When written through a fiction read, it not only becomes easier to consume, understand and deliberate. Even while dealing with such a delicate issue, the author has made sure that there is a constant suggestion of hope, family love, support and camaraderie that surrounds suicide. The author has displayed multiple points of view as that of the wives and children of men who commit suicide, the banking fraternity and how they can help this community and also of landlords. A powerful headline breaker that successfully 'unfictions' the tale it tells, is how one could summarize this mesmerizing story of grit and determination.

• STRENGTH: The language is simple and suited for beginners, for an issue so serious as farmer suicides. The book is a quick read consisting of only 130 pages. The cover page is extremely gripping and might be disturbing for some

• Drawbacks: The chapter names could have been better thought through

• TARGET READERS: Fiction lovers/Book lovers

• AGE GROUP: Young Adults

• GENRE: Contemporary issued-based fiction

• RATING: 4.4/5

The book HANG ON: A Second Wind is written by the author Eshwarmurthy G Pillai.

We all know that farmers dependent on too much on nature so whenever there is a failure of monsoons, there is a failure of crops even irrigation facilities are not so developed in India and because of this, they have to take heavy loans for growing crops and later they kill themselves due to their inability to repay loans mostly taken from landlords and banks. Book - Hang on - a second wind
Author - Eshwarmurthy G Pillai

Wow such a great concept, everyone should keep in mind this thing that “Suicide, a thin line between life and death, One who sees it, doesn’t cross it. One who doesn’t see it, cross it.”
It is a fictional story which inspires us in a very positive way. The story shows a true picture of farmers suicide in India.
The story is about Subodh, he is a poor farmer and also has huge burden of loans on his head and then due to drought, almost all the farmers around him gets ruined. Being troubled in such a crisis, he decides to end his life by committing suicide. Their near the tracks he met a little girl Vanhi who calls him abba. They had a conversation and
their conversation makes him feel good and in no time the grief disappears due to his innocence and simplicity. After seeing that how she preserves water he got very much impressed. By knowing that her father also committed suicide and Vanhi and her mother to face the world, he thought about his family and changed his mind.
Their comes the second wind in his life. He faced every difficulty of his life like a fighter and problems started solving gradually. He started making opportunities from obstacles.
Tremendous effort of author in showing pain of life. It's not just a story but a journey from being nothing to something. I personally feels that if you loses everything then also you should not lose hope. Cover page is attractive and title also conveys the massage that author wants to give by the book.
Recommended to everyone.

Life often through its uncanny signals and unique propositions offers enough insights to solve a majority of issues if one is receptive to pay heed to them. Even in 21st century it is quite unfortunate that people have to commit suicide especially the farmers who play a crucial role in fulfilling the basic needs of any human. This book dwells some light on this alarming issue with a positive and hopeful outlook.

The novel begins with a farmer Subodh in huge debt and poverty struck deciding to end his life. When he reaches the railway track, he finds a girl who narrates her sad story in comparison to which he finds his own life much easier and decides to fight against the evils. Rest of the book captures his struggle, strife and his unending quest to lead a better life.

Through the survival story of a farmer, author has shown many facets of life itself. The message is loud and clear that with the right attitude and sheer will power anything and everything can be over powered irrespective of how many obstacles one has to overcome. The cover and title are perfect and so does the narration. There are instances where book is a tear jerker especially in the initial few pages when the sorry state of farmer is presented but gradually it turns into a memorable inspiring work.

A short but must read work which can truly prove to be an elixir for those in distress and depression.

The book is divided into 15 chapters, each expressing a different phase in life of Subodh- a debtridden farmer. Everyday somewhere in India we hear the heartbreaking news of committing suicide of a debt-ridden farmer on the newspaper or on the news channel.

The story begins on a very disturbing point, a farmer who is about to commit suicide on the railway track, due to this debt but at that time a school going little girl Vani not only stop him to commit suicide but also brings a positive transfamation in him. To his meeting a special person and how life transforms in just a moment. There she shares the tiffin of her she brought with her and offers to drink water. The journey from being debtridden and going to commit suicide to taking up responsibility, fighting courageously for himself and then his pledge to make things better for not only himself but also others around him. Inspired by this, an idea comes to Subodh's mind that how the lives of millions of farmers can be saved by storing water during the rainy season. Then with the help of all the farmers and A manager of a bank, they make this Project successful.

The book is about strong determination and will power. This is really a good story that shows the problems of today's farmers. Overall it's a great read. The writing style is so detailed that you can feel those visuals in front of you, and it is bound to melt your heart. A beautiful book, definitely worth a read.

“Suicide, a thin line between life & death, one who sees it, doesn’t cross it. One who doesn’t see it, cross it.”

A book dedicated to all the farmers who laid their lives for the betterment of society. Given the record of extreme suicide cases among the farmers' community due to drought & famine, the author has rightly advocated their concerns through this book. The book gives you hope. It instills in you a sense of responsibility towards the ones who make sure our plates have a meal. Our feeders that they are, how often do we seriously do our bit to help make their lives better? The author has put these important issues together in this book for us as a society to read & reflect upon.

Talking about the issue of farmers’ suicide, the author also goes on to describe the huge toll this drastic decision of ending one’s life takes on the immediate dependents – the farmers' family. Having no way forward, pulled down with utmost depression when the farmers put their life to an end, it is the family left behind that suffers further. We don’t talk much about this collateral damage that gets done in the process. The uprooted family with no immediate earing member to rely on goes astray. With responsibilities to take care of, these families are often brought down to menial conditions.

Subodh is the protagonist of this book. He is a farmer who did a suicide attempt because of the bank debt. In that time he met a school girl named Vanhi. During the conversation with that child he got some currage to face his problems. Because of her innocence and simplicity, he started a new journey of his life. The bank manager Stephen Noronha helped Subodh to deliver a powerful message to all the debt-ridden farmers.
To know how he faced all the difficulties & problems and how he solved them you should read this book. This is a great read for those who suffering their life. The author beautifully described a serious issue in our society. We all know that so many farmers are doing suicide because of the debt. They are borrowing the money for the cultivation purpose not for their personal matters. They help us to feed our stomach but we didn't care about their life. This is an inspiration for those farmers to do something for their own life and society. It is an eye open story with brilliant narration. A simple and powerful story with strong characters. I really like the book cover and tittle. Both of them are so attractive. Grammar and editing is good and well crafted story. The usage of language is simple and lucid. The author give his 100 percentage to made this story interesting. Ireally enjoyed the read. Overal a great book. I recommend it to all.

This book address a very important issue -- farmer's plight and pressures.I think this book should reach to maximum masses so that we can raise awareness, make more people sensitise towards farmers, their hard work and contribution to our life.
.
This book follows the story of Subodh Kadale, a middle aged farmer. He wasn't engaged any occupation other than farming. His life was on track until a drought occured which shattered his life.Due to the drought, he was trapped in debts. He lost his everything and was bankrupt.Even after losing everything he was still in debts. He decide to commit suicide and when he was about to end his life, a little girl came And changed the meaning of life for him. That's where his life started and he became the torch bearer for himself and also for others.
.
This is guiding and motivating. With hope and patience everything happens. Life comes with even and odds.Dawn comes right after the darkest hour. This book makes us realise that our problems are nothing. Not just about suicide it also talks about aftermath.Suicide doesnt ends the pain, it just transfers from one to other.
.
The storyline is amazing And Pace is just perfect.Characters with their conditions, situations And background are very well etched. The cover is powerful and title is well justified.
