This book is part of the Code Breaking for Kids series and is best read in conjunction with the first 2 in the series. With a little help from the internet though, the puzzles can be solved without reading the first 2 books. Come along on Oakley's adventures in the city and help her figure out where she needs to go using the enclosed map.
Intended for Elementary aged children 8-12, this book contains fun puzzle activities ranging from Caesar shifts to reading a map for clues. It might also be enjoyed by younger teenagers who are just learning introductory code breaking skills.
This book builds on the skills introduced in the first 2 books and assumes children will remember some of what they have already learned or be able to reference the previous books for assistance. 10+ codes are included as part of the story.
An additional 10 cryptograms that are not part of the overall story are included at the end to continue building skills.
Outside equipment will be needed to fully utilize this book. At a minimum, a pencil will be needed, but other items are recommended within the book. If you have bought the ebook, you will additionally need paper, preferable lined or graph paper and a bit more imagination to use the included map.
These codes require a good grasp of the alphabet and word recognition. They will not be able to be solved by younger children who cannot read well yet without assistance, but might be enjoyed by children who have mastered the alphabet as a family activity.
Included codes are related to the story, the history of cryptography or jokes.
