From USA Today and Amazon bestselling author Scarlett Scott comes a deliciously wicked tale of danger, treachery, and passion...
Tilly, the widowed Duchess of Longleigh, finally has everything she wants. Everything, that is, except for the forbidden man who stole her heart and fathered her child before disappearing from her life. Time has passed, but she has not forgotten him. Nor has she stopped longing for him. But when he mysteriously reappears in London, a ruthless stranger has taken the place of the lover she thought she knew.
Bedding the duchess was meant to be a job for Adrian Hastings and nothing more. The terms were simple: a month-long affair in exchange for the funds to start a new life far from the rumors and scandal tainting his past. He never intended to fall in love. Nor did he reckon on the betrayal that would almost cost him his life.
His return to England is with a sole purpose in mind, to gain his vengeance on the heartless widow. He won’t stop until he reveals her deepest, most shameful secrets to the world.
USA TODAY bestselling author Scarlett Scott writes steamy Victorian and Regency historical romances with strong, intelligent heroines and sexy alpha heroes. She lives in Pennsylvania and Maryland with her Canadian husband, their adorable identical twins, a demanding diva dog, and one zany cat.
Right. I've ruminated on this for a while now, reread bits and I still feel the same way: frustrated, and a little cheated. Scarlett Scott is a sublime writer, but for whatever reason this series is just one book repeating itself again and again in some form or another, with the exception of the utterly magnificent Lady Wallflower. That book is brilliant, and everyone should read it.
This one? I've got the same complaints I have had with the preceding two installments. The couple this time is marginally, and I really mean… marginally…. Nicer to each other than in Lady Wicked(which felt like I was reading 200 pages of emotional abuse). My biggest gripe is that the characters were completely amorphous. They were “special” and “sweet” and “strong” and “independent” and “kind” and “intelligent” and nothing that either character ever did, ever, demonstrated these wonderful qualities. Why? Because there is no dialogue in the book that isn't rehashing old sh*t or simply an argument. There is no room to get to know the hero or the heroine, no opportunity for them to show whatever makes them, them.
Sigh.
If you are familiar with my reviews and feelings about HR you know… if there is one thing that ticks me off more it is when an author tells us about a character but never shows us the personality traits that are described. Comparing this book and book 3 and 4 to Jo or Decker (Lady Wallflower, book 2) I couldn’t tell you who was who, what they looked like, or what made them interesting. They have simply morphed into the same thing. Jo and Decker on the other hand demonstrate Scott’s talent at character creation and relationship development: Jo is vibrant, smart as a whip, a little odd. Decker is a greedy, self-involved scoundrel (in the best possible way). I can see them; I can hear them.
I never heard or saw Tilly or Adrian. Never felt like there was an arch. Didn’t even feel like there was a relationship story being told. They met, they were separated, they came together and hated each other, then suddenly, they were in love? Remove the sex scenes and I don’t know I didn’t buy their love or affection for a second.
It’s a shame because I KNOW Scott can write a hell of a book. But, this series is full of stumbles for me.
Sigh.
I will read the next one, because at least there isn’t a secret baby this time. But I am sadly starting to feel like my love affair with Scott is coming to an end.
Scarlett Scott knows very well how to play the reader's heartstrings.
The Plot The horrible, old and impotent Duke of Longleigh bought in his nephew Robin Carstairs to sire him an heir with his Duchess Tilly. Always wanting to be a mother, Tilly accepted this twisted scheme additionally it didn't hurt that Robin was charming, sweet, attentive and handsome. Little did anyone know, this scheme would backfire on everyone when Robin and Tilly fell in love. It's been a couple of years, the Duke is dead (finally), Tilly has a lovely son, Robin has disappeared without a trace but in his place Adrian has appeared who looks & sounds exactly like Robin but he is a colder, more ruthless and an angrier version. Adrian wants his son, revenge, a marriage to Tilly and some answers - exactly in that order.
This plot is very difficult to summarize due to high spoiler content & complexity, I hope I have done it some justice.
What I Loved - How does Ms Scott do it? This plot was so beautiful, full of emotional depth and complexity. I felt it had HEA in the truest sense of the phrase. - The story was written very well, as a reader you feel everything, every emotion the characters feel. Like the previous books, this one too is high on angst but has balanced itself well with love. - Oh the characters, they were breathtaking. Their individual stories, the overlap, the love, the hate and the development fit in perfectly. The chemistry between the main characters was incredible. - The flashback & letter excerpts lent additional clarity to the plot. The story was constantly moving forward even with the flashbacks, great pacing which kept me hooked to the last page. - This story broke my heart and made me fall in love all at the same time! Now that is brilliant penmanship.
Why not the full 5 stars? - The "getting someone to impregnate your wife" was creepy. I know these things happened back then but still, I found it super weird. - I had hoped someone would go and kill the damned Duke (especially Tilly) it would have justified the title of the book.
The Hero Talk about a tortured hero done right. I mean the poor fellow was suffering personified. Adrian/ Robin was a poignant hero. His life was lamentable but he persevered. Every facet of Adrian's character was justified, starting with his mistrust, to his love, to anger. All he craved was stability, but his circumstances kept denying him that, so it was just easier to cling to his anger. But even in that, he entertained the possibility of support & love from Tilly and given enough time, his hope returned. How do you not love a hero like that?
The Heroine I bow to the endurance Tilly displayed. She had an abusive marriage, she fell in love with a guy who disappeared later, she has a son, who is technically illegitimate, the love of her life comes back with accusations, and this woman finds a way to seek comfort & happiness in whatever little manner she can. No tantrums, no denial, no drama, just acceptance and finding a way forward. She is so loving, patient & kind. I loved her so much that I am going to use her as an example in my sessions (I am a psychologist).
My Recommendation This book should be turned into a movie. As I was reading, I could picture the screenplay unfolding. I am highly recommending this book. Toodles, as I have a date with the Duke of Northwich from Lady Brazen !!
If I could give Lady Lawless 10 stars I would. Its an Exception story!!
We meet Tilly Duchess of Longleigh in the first book of this series Lady Ruthless. I have been wondering how she would get her own story. She was already Unhappily Married to the abusive much older Duke of Longleigh.
Tilly was being abused my her impotent husband the Duke and finally the reprobate evil Duke has drowned at sea. A few years before the Duke had forced Tilly and his illegitimate and only son Adrian Hastings to sire a child together. The Duke was incapable of the sexual act and wanted the heir to be of his blood.
Adrian agrees for a fee of 10 thousand pounds He was thinking at the time the Duchess would be older women. Never did he image a the beautiful young Duchess Tilly. Using a fake name of Robin Carstairs he and Tilly embark upon months of love making and friendship which turns into a strong real true love for one another.
But the Duke is so evil he has had people watching them from afar and as soon as Tilly becomes pregnant the Duke returns and has his own son thrown into prison.
This story was so emotional and I couldn't put it down. I read straight throw the night. I had to know how Adrian and Tilly along with there young son would overcome all the wrongs done to them.
Highly emotional and full of passionate drive and tension. Scarlett Scot has always been a wonderful writer, Lady Lawless shows off her talent perfectly.
I very much enjoyed this story, a wonder plot full of intrigue and danger. It’s emotional, and the characters have a wonderful chemistry together, at times it’s passionate and beautiful at others slightly dark and intense, but always very enjoyable to read.
I’m not a fan of flashbacks in books, this one that starts in one year, goes back a few years for 10 chapters or so, then jumps forward to were we began for the remainder. It doesn’t take away from the story, it’s just not my preferred way of reading.
I loved the book on the whole and would gladly recommend it.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Another 5 Star ⭐️ for the incredibly talented Scarlett Scott! This is Book 5 in the Notorious Ladies series. And these beautiful ladies are strong and determined. This book has such a strong storyline. It’s filled with lies, secrets and then love. The Duchess Tilly is married to a a man twice her age and cruel to her. He needs an heir and finds a way to get a heir no matter the cost. The man he chooses Robin Corstairs is handsome and charming. Lady Tilly has no choice but to go along with her husbands twisted plans. Also, Robin is a strong willed hero and allows nothing to stop him from his true love. Lady Tilly was not given a choice by her parents in marrying the cruel Duke. But she is a strong woman and determined to be happy, whatever the cost. This is such a loaded storyline! It has lies, secrets and tragedy. Such a tearjerker and surprises and heartaches. I really enjoyed this book so much, I also learned about the horrific jails and their prison system. Just a wonderful and addictive storyline. I will definitely read this again. Cannot wait for the next book.
I was given an ARC through BookFunnel for an honest review.
This is a book in which I would like the villain of the story to be brought to life so I could have the pleasure of killing him myself. Repeatedly. I am not a violent person but everything this evil man did made me into a raving mad woman bent on justice. The rest of the story? Tilly and Adrian—what a beautiful ride. From more than a questionable beginning of deceit and reasoning, their love story became epic. Their struggles when parted and greater pain when reunited was emotional and heartbreaking. It was truly a story of learning to believe your heart, rather than listening to the doubts of your head. To grab the fortune presented by life and live it. Another remarkable story by this gifted writer. I am already desperate for the next book!
Yowza! This is one of those amazing stories that have me wanting to read quickly to see what would happen, or read slowly so it will not end! Absorbing, highly emotional with highs and lows that are highly elating or heartbreaking to the point of hard to read the next line.
She had been manipulated by her husband, pushed into an affair with his blessing for one purpose. Produce a heir. Then he leaves her.
He was just doing it for the money, to start a new life and get away from the past. He never thought it would become emotional or pull at his heart. Then he was betrayed.
After a time he comes back for vengeance, but you know what they say. Hate and love are close partners and it seems there may be more involved than either of them thought.
Simply brilliant and unforgettable as this author is famous for consistently!!!
Scarlett Scott is one of my top authors to read. So add in second chance, and i am devouring in a day! Once again with the ladies, she brings strength to the heroine and her perfect match. Tilly is hopeful but not going to allow Adrian to just run her over.
Things I Love: - perfect mix of past and present storytelling to appreciate the connection Tilly & Adrian have. - the relationship begins as a deal, but they dont act on until the chemistry sparks to life. - so many swoony moments especially when Adrian is with his son
Thing to consider: - part of a series but definitely could be read as standalone - be prepared to fall hard for Adrian
Scarlett Scott delivers some of best in the historical romance. Always connection leaps off the page, characters who are quirky, fun and interesting, and something added to look into the past through the lens of the past.
I am at a loss for words to describe this book - it was amazing!
Don't you just love when a book turns out to be nothing like you thought it would be? Instead it becomes so much better than you could have imagined! Well, that is precisely what this book was for me. It was full of deception, burning revenge, hate, friendship, steamy romance, love, loss, heartbreak & more. Robby & Tilly went from strangers to friend to lovers to enemies and back to lovers & I experienced every one of their emotions. The villain was evil & I hated him through the book.
All I can say is "go buy this book" - it's a keeper! I voluntarily read & reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts & opinions are my own.
I don´t know how you do it, Scarlett Scott, but this book is a masterpiece. His return is with a sole purpose in mind, to gain his vengeance on the heartless widow. He won’t stop until he reveals her deepest, most shameful secrets to the world. Unless she breaks him first. I couldn´t put this down. It was an obsession. I loved that we get to see the past that they enjoy together, how they fell in love with each other, the time they spend enjoying themselves. It’s steamy and passionate, but so sweet and emotional. Tilly is an amazing female character. She is strong and resilient, but at the same time loving and compassionate. Adrian is so manly and sexy. It broke my heart all his suffering because of one man. But the way they find the path to each other again is so perfect, so correct, that you feel like dancing at the end of this book. Thank you for another beautiful story that entertain us but also make us embrace all these feelings of happiness and anguish that make us more human after it. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Lady Lawless is truly an exquisite story. It is a page turner from the very first paragraph. Scarlett did not forget a single detail. Tilly is easily one of my FAVORITE notorious ladies. She’s put up with the garbage for so long she isn’t holding back. She is ready for some independence and then HE shows up but it isn’t the same, or it is the same, or it might be the same? There are plenty of twists before their story is told. This story is heartbreaking at times and full of rainbows. Tilly and Adrian are so very relatable I couldn’t help fall in love. I truly did not want their story to end and yet couldn’t put it down. This is definitely an epic tale that will be revisited many times over.
What a story the cruel Duke of Longleigh couldn’t produce an heir so he blackmailed his bastard son Adrian aka Robin into getting his wife pregnant. He threatens her so they agree, but little did they know they would fall in love and then disaster strikes and he disappears and she fears he’s dead. Widowed Duchess of Longleigh Tilly has a son, but no father to help her raise him until she spies Robin across a ballroom floor. He’s come to despise her, she set him up, help send him to prison and taken his son. Enough is enough he wants his son! A captivating story of a second chance at love, but will Adrian ever trust Tilly again and give her his heart? Fighting the attraction is harder than he thought, how can he still desire and love the scheming woman who never loved him? Tilly wants her son to be happy, have the man she’s always loved back in her life, if only he can trust her again with his heart and his love. A captivating story of deception, love and redemption. I voluntarily read and reviewed this excellent book filled romance.
Tilly, the widowed Duchess of Longleigh, finally has her freedom if fact everything except for the man who stole her heart, fathered her child then disappeared. Now he’s mysteriously reappeared in London, a ruthless stranger has taken the place of the lover she thought she knew. Bedding the duchess was meant to be a job for Adrian Hastings and nothing more. Nor did he reckon on the betrayal that would almost cost him his life. His return is with a sole purpose in mind, to gain his vengeance on the heartless widow. Another amazing book from the author. It’s the fifth book in the series & is very easily read on its own. However I love how characters from other books make appearances. I loved both Tilly & Adrian who went through a host of relationships strangers, friends, lovers, enemies & finally back to lovers. The road to their HEA was strewn with obstacles & it made for a totally engrossing read. The characters had oodles of depth & my heart went out to both Adrian & Tilly for all they suffered. I loathed the villain who was just plain evil. I loved the teaser for the next book which I can't wait to read My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Amazing story of love, deceit, betrayal and love (I know I repeated that one, but that one is the most important). Tilly, the widowed Duchess of Longleigh, was forced into marriage by her family, but a deal made be her husband, brings her real love. Adrian Hastings was caught in an impossible situation, but trying to make it right, brought him even more devastation. Their love and eventually their trust brings them to the HEA, but what a ride they, and the readers, have to take to get there. I highly recommend you do.
Starring Tilly, the widowed Duchess of Longleigh and Mr. Adrian Hastings.
Tropes: Insta-Attraction, Enemies to Lovers, Hero in Disguise, Revenge.
This book will grip you by the heart and won’t let go until you are ugly crying af!! Whoa, that was an emotional high and the best book hangover EVER!!
Two people who are forced into an unwanted situation only to find love... then cruelly torn apart. Omigosh, I felt so bad for Adrian and Tilly. I just wanted to hug them both and tell them... “it’s okay, the $#!+ storm will pass and Scarlett Scott is going to give you THE BEST HEA... promise!! These two were certainly put through the emotional wringer... but came out of it stronger than ever. I absolutely loved their story.
Honestly, Scarlett Scott does it again!! Heart-wrenching story filled with love, hope, and redemption... and I just happily gobble it up!! She is firmly on my keeper shelf and I love everything she writes.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily review it and the comments are 100% my own.
5 stars: Ugly cried AF. Major book hangover. Characters and storyline were freaken amazeballs. Made me wanna hug the author for writing a book that gave me all the feels!! Will definitely be reading this story over and over and over again!!
This is such a twisted wicked storyline. Tilly, Duchess of Longleigh is finally widowed and can start her life anew. However, she still dreams of her former lover and father to her child. Adrian Hasting just came out of hell aka prison. He is haunted by the horrors he experiences in prison and the woman who was his former lover.
Tilly and Adrian are torn into a marriage of convenience where they learn more about how they were torn apart and how Adrian ended up in prison. This book is very dark and sensual. Miss Scott is an amazing writer. I can't wait for her next book of the series Lady Brazen.
Fantastic emotional ride!! This series just keeps getting better and better. This book had it all. The storyline was fantastic and the emotion from the main characters was palpable. Scarlett Scott has really outdone herself with the Notorious Ladies of London series. I truly enjoyed Tully and Adrian’s story and am very much looking forward to the next installment Lady Brazen. 5 Stars!!!
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest unbiased review.
What a fantastic read! I’m so glad Tilly found happiness at last with Adrian. She remained sweet despite the cruelty she suffered at the hands of her former husband. What Adrian went through was awful, but I’m glad he was able to heal and move forward with Tilly. The chemistry between the 2 characters was sizzling. The epilogue with the Tilly pregnant melted my heart! I kept holding my breath because I was afraid the old duke would somehow pop back up in the picture and ruin everything for the couple, as he did some years prior, when they were planning to run away… good thing he stayed dead!
I very much enjoyed this book. It's not all light and fluffy, there are some really dark things happening here too. However, a HEA is achieved. I did like this story, it seemed to me that it was a bit darker in places and #6 seems to take it up again - 100% with a HEA. 5☆
I was blown away by this story. The focus in this book is Adrian. You don’t read too many romance books where the hero is the main focus. The story of Adrian’s life is such a compelling story. Love, betrayal, and hurt all are part of his tale. I sympathized with him and hurt for him. Such a great character. Tilly and Adrian are tragic characters who never lost the love they developed and we are part of their journey along the way. A beautiful story!
I highly recommend this one, it will give you all the feels! Its sweet, angsty and oh so steamy! You can't go wrong with a book by Scarlett, I've never read one that I didn't like! And this one felt extra memorable. I have the feeling Tilly and Adrian will be sticking with me for awhile.
I loved Tilly and Adrian's story it was full of ups and downs, of love lost and found.
Tilly Duchess of Longleigh despised and hated her husband and wished for his demise daily. Her husband was a cold, cruel and vicious man who made his enmity to the woman he had married more and more clear with every passing day. He had married Tilly to secure the Longleigh line and thus far they had been unsuccessful. So he devised a devious and scandalous plan that should it become widely known would destroy all those involved. He decided to dangle the promise of £10,000 to his illegitimate son Adrian Hastings on the procurement of an heir.
Adrain Hastings hated his father for all that he had done to him and his mother and wanted nothing to do with him, but the lure of so much money was too tempting to turn down as it would see him to America and a new life, a fresh start away from pain and loss of his old one. However there were conditions he could not use his real name he was to assume the identity of Robin Carstairs a nephew of Longleighs and that he could not divulge any details of his charade.
Tilly wished for a child to love and to nuture, a child that would love her in a place where there was no love to be found.
Both were initially horrified at the Duke's plan one month with a total stranger to beget an heir, but the lure of money and a baby was too much for either of them. When they meet both are wary of each other, but sparks of attraction fly around them and soon over the course of the month attraction becomes more so much more. Tilly has fallen in love, to her Robin is the balm to her wounded heart and soul and when he disappears from her life she is devastated and does everything she can to find him enlisting the help of friends and a private investigator to no avail because unbeknownst to Tilly Robin Carstairs does not exist.
Will Tilly ever discover the truth after her husband's demise in a boating accident or will the late Duke finally succeed in destroying them both with his need to beget an heir. Will Adrian ever escape the prison his father has condemned him too, convicted of a crime he did not commit will he ever see the light of day again.
As I said I loved this book it draws you in from the start and I couldn't put it down till the end.

Love this series about strong and brave women in a era when they were not seen as equals. Tilly, Duchess of Longleigh, was married to an evil man who blamed her for his infertility. He was mean and horrible to her. Since he is past his prime, he comes up with a scheme to use his bastard son, Adrian Hastings, to impregnate Tilly. Poor Tilly is lied to and told Adrian is the Duke's nephew. It was sad how people with wealth and titles manipulated people's lives and sometimes destroyed them. Anyway, the scheme backfired on the Duke because Tilly and Adrian fell in love. Theirs was a sweet love that grew gradually and produced a child. Instead of paying Adrian money for his services, the Duke lies and has him put in prison where he suffers for eighteen months. Tilly has no idea that the Duke had Adrian arrested. Adrian's bitterness led him to suppose Tilly had rejected him and cooperated with the Duke to get rid of him. Eventually love overrides his bitterness and he rekindles his love for her. Scarett is the Queen of historical romance and her stories always satisfy my thirst for a good love story. She creates some great female characters.

When your heart and your eyes hold a different account of the past! Some parts of Adrian and Tilly remembering their past are vastly different and yet the same! Tilly aka Duchess of Longleigh was sold to and old Duke three times her age by her parents! This was typical for this time period. There story is so heart rendering keep tissue handy! Love makes you optimistic and hopeful for the future but Tilly had been married to the monster Duke to know he was pure evil but she was blinded by her love for Robin but that was not only his name or his relationship to her vile husband! The one thing she wanted was a child and the Duke could not perform a mans duty and despised her for it not his own horrible past! Faced with more pain she agreed to meet with Robin but they both did not want to be pawns of the Duke! Well the best laid plans and all! These two are meant to be together despite the horrors they faced! Robin as Tilly knew him escaped an unimaginable hell to return to her but there is no trust between them! Has their love survived? Can it? Get a box of tissues as this love story is for the ages!!!
I was excited to finally read Tilly's story; I had a lot of sympathy for Tilly before reading this based on how her character was portrayed in previous books. I really enjoyed this book and I was very satisfied that Tilly got her HEA. I thought that the transitions from past to present were well done and I didn't find the chapters on the past boring, as I often do. I give this book 3 stars versus 4 because it was fairly put-downable. I put this book down multiple times because it didn't hold my interest for very long. I think the main cause of this was the drawn-out "she betrayed me and I won't believe anything she says" mindset from Adrian. I obviously expected him to be cautious at first, but given how close the MCs were in the past they could have sat down and had a frank conversation much sooner. I'm also not sure how I feel about Adrian demanding that Tilly marry him, no matter how upset he was over her "betrayal." He could have demanded to see his child without forcing Tilly to marry him, especially given how abusive, unwanted, and recent her last marriage was. Regardless, the ending of this book has me excited for the next, which I will definitely be reading come July.

The story: Tilly is married to a monster - one that can't perform the marital act. Two years ago, forced Tilly to spend a month with a man he told her was his nephew and get pregnant so he can have an heir that at least shared his bloodline. But Tilly falls in love with the man - Robin. Now her husband is dead (hooray!) and Robin has reappeared after she searched for him for years (double hooray!) but his name is actually Adrian and he seems to really hate Tilly now (oh no!) and he's going to force her to marry him so he can have their son.
This one was pretty good. Much of the story is based on Adrian believing that Tilly betrayed him but the story is flimsy at best. I just didn't buy that he would believe his over her. But this is a second chance love story and I enjoyed how the book showed them falling in love in the past and then falling in love all over again in the present.
