Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is an American playwright, screenwriter, and comic book writer best known for his work for Marvel Comics and for the television series Glee, Big Love, Riverdale, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He is Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics.
Aguirre-Sacasa grew up liking comic books, recalling in 2003, "My mom would take us out to the 7-Eleven on River Road during the summer, and we would get Slurpees and buy comics off the spinning rack. I would read them all over and over again, and draw my own pictures and stuff."
He began writing for Marvel Comics, he explained, when "Marvel hired an editor to find new writers, and they hired her from a theatrical agency. So she started calling theaters and asking if they knew any playwrights who might be good for comic books. A couple of different theaters said she should look at me. So she called me, I sent her a couple of my plays and she said 'Great, would you like to pitch on a couple of comic books in the works?'"
His first submissions were "not what [they were] interested in for the character[s]" but eventually he was assigned an 11-page Fantastic Four story, "The True Meaning of...," for the Marvel Holiday Special 2004. He went on to write Fantastic Four stories in Marvel Knights 4, a spinoff of that superhero team's long-running title; and stories for Nightcrawler vol. 3; The Sensational Spider-Man vol. 2; and Dead of Night featuring Man-Thing.
In May 2008 Aguirre-Sacasa returned to the Fantastic Four with a miniseries tie-in to the company-wide "Secret Invasion" storyline concerning a years-long infiltration of Earth by the shape-shifting alien race, the Skrulls, and an Angel Revelations miniseries with artists Barry Kitson and Adam Polina, respectively. He adapted for comics the Stephen King novel The Stand.

In 2013, he created Afterlife with Archie, depicting Archie Andrews in the midst of a zombie apocalypse; the book's success led to Aguirre-Sacasa being named Archie Comics' chief creative officer.

I guess I'm partial to this collection because it reminds me of the time I fell in love with my boyfriend after his body had been taken over by my absentee father.

I'm calling this as it will never be released since it's 5 years overdue and Archie just released Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Occult Edition which contains the series to date. Three issues in this arc have been released. The first two issues are origin stories for Salem and Edward Spellman. They are both very solid but for some reason Hack decided to draw Edward Spellman to look like Eddie Munster.

In the final issue Edward Spellman (in Harvey's body) meets Sabrina for the first time. Unfortunately, the story finishes on something of an ominous note with no further issues in sight.

It may be sightly cheating to review an entire volume when only a few of the planned six issues have been released. But at the moment, it seems like Aguirre-Sacasa is focused on the Riverdale and Sabrina TV and Netflix series to the exclusion of all else. We may get a couple of issues during hiatuses, but I'm not expecting to see much more than that. I'd love to be proven wrong, though, because Archie Horror is so, so good.

Fun and campy. Really enjoyed getting to learn about Salem's background! However with the way it ends and no news on the next issue, seems like there won't be a resolution to the comics which is a bummer.

This series is phenomenal but it gets way too scary for me sometimes. I love the watercolor illustrations, plot, characters, dialogue, allusions, and the humor. The only things that shivers my timbers is the heavy Satanical undercurrents and plotline. It's really unnerving and I suppose Aguirre-Sacasa wrote an accurate title because it chills me to the bone! I need to finish watching the television show because I know so much of the backstory now. It will probably be another year until the next volume comes out and I'll have to rely on the pricking of my thumbs to know the exact date. Happy haunting!

Salem's backstory is so tame. I was 100% expecting him to have been turned into a cat for trying to bring about the apocalypse so this felt like really small potatoes. Of course, comic Salem is way better than show Salem who doesn't even speak.

But this volume is all Salem and Edward Spellman with no other plot lines playing out. It's on par with vol 1 in terms of quality. Which is to say, it's kind of bad? But also I'm not mad I read it? I came here expecting a hot mess so. You know. It had no where to go but up. I wasn't bored, I guess is what I'm trying to say.

I am kind of mad Edward entertained the thought of boning his own daughter though. You know, I already thought he was the worst father ever so that wasn't really necessary. Also the cannibalism seems really excessive at this point. Like goddamn. I GET IT. They eat people.

I don't know why I'm giving it three stars. It's truly bad, lol. Definitely don't read it if you didn't watch the show. I just came here for more answers to the question "what the fuck was that?"

*3.5

I read volumes 6-8 separately, although this collection is an easy way of adding them to my goodreads shelves!

As with the first five volumes, I love the art style, the colour palette and the goriness of these comics. They're fun, quick reads and something a bit different - and if you enjoy the CAOS Netflix series, you'll love these comics! The storyline was clearly an inspiration for the tv series, yet you get a lot more backstory for many of the favourite characters, i.e. Salem and how he came to be a familiar. There's a lot of pop culture references and humour sprinkled throughout too.

It's just a shame they've stopped working on the comic series as it was starting to get really exciting!

*Of the issues released so far*

'Chilling Adventures' continues to hold my interest. I am totally digging the issues that focus solely on the backstories of certain characters (Salem, Edward, etc.).

The plot is progressing nicely, and the artwork and coloring are still wonderfully atmospheric.

I actually thought this would be the end of the series but her dad coming back to life using her boyfriend's previously dead body is such a mind fuck that I need some time to digest that, so it's good that we are not over yet.

(Review based on issues released so far #6-8 since there has been such a gap period between issues)
While I am still enjoying this series, 1. I did not know that it has been paused indefinitely (?), and 2. These issues focus so much on the backgrounds of characters, there wasn't much push forward with the main plot. To summarize:
Issue #6: Origin story of Salem (came to Boston in the 1600s as Samuel; found work at John Proctor's--yes THAT John Proctor--farm; slept with Abigail and got her pregnant; cursed by witches when he wouldn't marry Abigail; Satan ate their baby; Abigail fled Salem in the witch hunts and left Salem behind; Satan gives Salem back his voice and prophesies that he will need to protect a half witch one day) + Origin story of Ambroses' snakes (Indian prince and princess who tried to kill their stepmother only to be duped by the palace tutor)
Issue #7: Origin story of Edward Spellman (becomes alter boy in Church of Night with strong talent for summoning demons; pressured by the High Priest to summon Satan; Edward dupes all by convincing a shapeshifting demon to appear as Satan; Edward kills High Priest and takes over growing Church of Night; Hilda and Zelda find out and bind him in witch limbo)
Issue #8: Sabrina finally meets up with Harvey/Edward, still not knowing the truth; Hilda and Zelda attempt to (aggressively) convince her to put things back in order by killing Harvey; Sabrina fights her aunts and wins though Ambrose warns that now she must kill another to restore balance; Harvey/Edward actively contemplates (?!) sleeping with Sabrina while pretending to be Harvey; Edward begins to understand that Madam Satan/Iona is the one who brought him back in order to get her revenge.
Hopefully this Volume 2 gets finished because I am curious about the ending + can't get enough of this gorgeous artwork!

The strongest suit of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina for the previous five issues had been how it used to combine haunting and atmospheric horror with its facetious and sometimes disturbing coming-of-age story. For this second volume, the progression of this story takes the back seat, for two more exploratory issues functioning as flash-back episodes and one final issue setting up for the continuation of the series. Since then, the series has been on a hiatus, mainly due to the fact that Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has been working on the Netflix adaptations of this series and also Riverdale. With that in mind, the second volume comes off as a half-finished intermission followed by a teaser for what's to come, with no follow-up in sight, making it a bit disappointing on the writing front, even though the two flashback issues are amazing. There is nothing bad I can say about the art though, Robert Hack did a phenomenal job, especially when it comes to the texture- and colorwork.

{on kindle} Wow this novel was amazing! It was gory and dark like the previous novel, but I really enjoyed it. Again I loved the references to Riverdale and the uniqueness of the storyline. It was really interesting to know more about other characters like Salem and Sabrina’s father. And of course the artwork was incredible!

I read it on my kindle so the novel was split into 3 issues, and it was really easy to read through them. If you have read the first novel, you have to read this one!

Another good volume, although this was mainly origin stories with background information. We got the origins of the cat Salem and the two cobra familiars as well as the origin of Sabrina's father, who's returned from the dead. We only got issue of true story advancement.

And as with Afterlife with Archie, the story halted and we're left hanging. I'd love to see this story continue as it's really good. Considering the types of comics Archie Comics is famous for, it's ironic that it produces some of the best horror comics I've ever read.

Now let's get some consistency going with the publishing and things will really be great.

Happy Halloween!

"A truism I have learned: Not all demons are women, but all women are demons. And a demon who's also a woman... tread carefully, for you'll always be betrayed."

"And I'm talking about the oldest witch-law of them all. Which is that everything comes at a price... everything must be paid for, in full."

This volume isn't complete yet so this will be updated again once it is. However, loving the plot so far!

I liked this; the Madam Satan stuff is interesting, but the story somehow still feels a little... distant? Like the first volume was snapshots of Sabrina growing up and this one isn't going deep into the story either, for me. I do like it though, it's very dark compared to what I expected, which is pretty cool. I'm definitely going to give the next volume a try.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Plot: Issue 7 This tells the story of the familiars. Sabrina’s cat (Salem) and Abrose’s snakes (unnamed) start a conversation after the snakes see that Salem doesn’t want to eat a mouse in the house (they don’t seem to have a problem with this). The snakes volunteer their story which is, they were once a wealthy Prince and Princess but they got deceived by a man who got them to attempt a murder on there father’s new bride. However, he told the father in advance. Thus, making them look bad. So, he had the man punish them by turning them into snakes. Only they got their revenge years later and bite the ankle of the elephant he and their stepmother (they’re father was poisoned by the man). Salem then tells his story of how he was cursed by a woman named Abagail for denying her marriage when he find’s out she’s pregnant. The Dark Lord comes to him afterwards and offers him a deal that in the future he’ll serve a half-bred witch and if he does that, he might just turn him back into a human. In Issue 8 we get Edward’s tale. Edward at an early age discovers he’s a gifted conjurer. He’s the assistant of a Friar. He conjurers a demon and the Friar test him a few times. After meeting the challenges, he asks hi to conjure the greatest one of all-Satan-. So after a few tries he “gets it right” and calls up Satan in front of a crowd on Christmas Eve (including his sisters Helda and Zelda). Only his mentor won’t give him the promotion he promised in the church. So, he revels it was all a hoax. (It was a female demon in disguise) and kills him (taking his place). The sister’s find out eventually and tie him to the hanging tree (but don’t kill him). Instead they send him into limbo (nice pun as in the tree has limbs). Fast forward to Iona bringing him back, but he doesn’t remember her yet. He recognizes Sabrina’s picture inside Harvey’s jacket (because he’s now in Harvey’s body). After finishing up a meal-of Mr. Kinkle-. He goes to meet up with his daughter. In Issue 9 Edward (as Harvey) meets up with Sabrina (and pervs on her). He let’s her confess her secret, but before he can find out who helped bring him back Helda and Zelda show up and a battle begins between creature’s they conjure and spirts from the dead Sabrina conjure. Sabrina wins but when she gets home, she finds out that because she was allowed to keep Harvey someone else must be killed to right the balance. The End. (As there aren’t any more issues after this).

Rating: 6 Hmm! I’m surprised that this series ended here. But firstly, why did Edward look like Eddie Monster is the first thing. That was probably actually intentional. He looks at us and says but you can call me Eddie. And if you definitely get the reference if your into the horror genre. I thought it was going to go in a weird direction and tell us he was adopted and that’s how his name got to be Spellman. And weirdly enough what didn’t creep me out was that he was raising demons and perpetrating he was lusting and considering sleeping with his own daughter. And again why did Lady Satan want his *** (him) back? The battle was so-so. Not horrible. Not exceptional. But the end felt like it shouldn’t have been the end because there was more story. What happens to Sabrina? Who does she actually kill? Does Edward tell her he’s her father? (etc). But I guess that’s why we have the Netflix series to satisy what the comic didn’t. For the most part tho it was interesting for a darker version of Sabrina.

Vol. 2 of this comic contains Issues #6-8. I read Vol. 1 two years ago and have been waiting just as long for more issues of this to be released, but it seems that with the success of the Netflix show, the comic has been put on the back burner (which is probably for the best, since it doesn't even seem like the creators know where they were going with this?).

This volume is WAY WAY darker than Vol. 1, which was already quite dark. The cannibalism, blood and gore, the weird skull faces, everything is here, plus some mild incestuous references, eugh.

Out of the three issues in this volume, the first one is Salem's backstory, plus the backstory of two random snakes that also live in the Spellman home???

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY: We do learn what happened after the cliffhanger from the previous volume.

However, this volume also ends in a cliffhanger.

It's not super upsetting because this comic already seems like a clusterfuck? It reminds me of The Walking Dead show, where the creator said in an interview that for every episode, they try to include the most ridiculous zombie deaths possible.

They made Sabrina's aunts cannibals, which is even more horrifying when she calls them "aunties". Sabrina's mom is in an insane asylum. Harvey is a one-dimensional, square-jawed 50's Ken Doll and he straight up DIES. ???

It's like they grabbed every character and pushed the envelope as far as they could, but somehow the result still ended up being superficial.

I think it's partly because of the pulpy, nostalgic art style that makes us feel like we've read this story a million times before. But also because of the disconnected narration technique where Sabrina doesn't feel like the main character in her own comic.

Besides that, if you've enjoyed the show, a lot of elements from it are in here too, including resurrection (and its consequences), the Church of Night, and the psycho pomps who come to take people to the afterlife.

Would recommend to: horror fans, and fans of the Netflix TV show who want to see an alternate storyline with similar characters.

...reminding Madam of her favorite writer, and how she and
Edward used to walk along the beach, and he would recite
"Annabel Lee" to her:

ANNABEL LEE

by Edgar Allan Poe

It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea,
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my Annabel Lee—
With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsmen came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,
Went envying her and me—
Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in Heaven above
Nor the demons down under the sea
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
In her sepulchre there by the sea—
In her tomb by the sounding sea.
