Once again, Ms. Shanna Handel has spun an intriguing tale, a mafia ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ without the tragic ending. The story continues from Dark Crown but could be read as a stand-alone. The story is a tale of two reigning families, the Russo and Romano families. One has long-term ties to the area; the other is newer but as powerful, if maybe not more so.
The story begins on Esme Russo’s eighteenth birthday, and Luca Romano is catching her sneaking out of the castle when the staff leaves. He will spank and kiss her—but what a shock when he and his brothers show up to her party that night. Later, after the guest leaves, Esme thinks playing a prank on Luca will even the score, but it backfires on her, and now she and Luca are in a new situation—but are they unhappy about it. What will it take to prevent a war between rival families? A marriage.
“Esme. There’s only one way out of this. You have to trust me.”
“You will marry me, you will take my last name, you will be a Romano, and you will move here, to my family’s home. Where you belong. My word is final.”
I loved the chemistry between Esme and Luca. While she always saw him as her nemesis as children, when she thinks back on it all, she realizes he was her hero, her protector, and that hasn’t changed. While she acts immature, doing pranks, he is still trying to protect her and keep their families from going to war. But what will come of her? She must leave her home and be under the dominance and control of Luca.
“He will wed you, bed you, then sit you on his dark throne, the queen of his world. But he will make you pay for that privilege with his commanding ways and punishing hands.”
While the story does not end on a cliffhanger, it does have a teaser in the epilogue that leads into the next story. I’m hooked on this new series and look forward to the next book, Dark Kingdom. These stories have minor violence, explicit sex scenes, power exchange, dominance, and submission.
Not sure how this book ended up on my Kindle, but it was a solid j/p read!
What I liked:
• 18 year old v h (at least, I *think* she's still got her v-card, it was a bit unclear. If not, she might as well be 🤷♀️) - she's a bit of an impetuous free spirit. I thought she was sweet.
• very j/p H - he's bossy and controlling (with penchant for spanking 😍🔥) - he's 4 years older
• Did I mention the spanking? 👀😬
• arranged marriage ❤️
• he tells her how to dress and throws a fit when she doesn't comply ....so... you guessed it... *spanking* 🙈🤣
• although I think this is supposed to be "enemies-to-lovers", the h doesn't spend much time "hating" the H or visa versa
• this had a "daddy" vibe, but that word is not actually used between them. He does call her "baby girl" ❤️
What I didn't like:
• I needed more character development
• the H was a bit more mushy that I tend to like, he was pretty sweet, despite all his bossiness and spanking tendency
• I think this book would have been better with more actual mafia business. This was very "mafia-lite"
• I needed a bit more edge/darkness
• once again, here is a mafia H who is rich, powerful, and hot... and not an OW in site 🙄, except for a brief mention of a gal he tried to date, but wasn't really into because he was so nuts about the h - #ColorMeSkeptical
• this is very light on angst, but given the subject matter, could have been so much more #imadramahooooaaaar
Bottom Line? I like this. I might try another by this author. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I’ve honestly been in a reading funk. I can’t concentrate and nothing really sounds good. But I always know I can count on a Shanna Handel book to pull me out of a funk. Her stories are crazy sexy, her men always make me drool and stay in my dreams, and I love the stories! I thought based on the first book in this series that this book would be darker (which would be fine as I love dark and her first book). It wasn’t really dark, it was more like of a Ms. Handel’s Bachman’s stories and I LOVED IT! Luca was so perfect! He has liked Esme forever, but he has a very stern, uber-protective demeanor. Esme is fun, impulsive, and also a hard worker. It is hard not to love her. I love the family dynamics that play out. This story is so delicious!! And as alway, Ms. Handel sets us up for the next in the series leaving me salivating for the next book! Goodbye book funk!!!
Esme and Luca are a beautiful couple. I really liked Esme in the last book, she was sweet, sassy and hopeful. With her past being so upsetting, seeing her with her family and finally getting the love she deserves is lovely. She is Luca’s whole world, his queen! I do wish that the characters had been a bit more developed and a little more intense. Other than that, this was a nice and sweet read!
5.0 out of 5 stars His Juliet Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2021 Verified Purchase At the risk of repeating myself once again, Shanna Handel never fails to entertain or surprise me. Her stories are innovating and downright entertaining.
Luca Romano, a man who carries a heavy burden on his shoulders.Luca was unique. A man who was used to being in control yet had no trouble quoting Shakespeare to his Juliet. He was also a man with a conscience when it came to keeping the peace between two powerful families.
Esme, the darling of the Russo family.Young, naive, and impulsive.A silly prank that changed the course of her life. Would her choices come back to bite her? Would the price be too high?
I loved how protective Luca was towards Esme. His need to keep her safe was still as strong as when she was being tormented as a child.
I admired how Esme adapted to her new life. Her new home. She was kind and gentle with Nonna. Esme went from a silly young girl to one who matured and accepted responsibility for actions.
As Luca and Esme grew emotionally closer they completed each other. Luca had loved Esme since childhood, but it took her longer to see what was right in front of her eyes. A soul-deep connection.
A steamy modern take on Romeo & Juliet, with a happy ending. Luca Romano always knew that one day, Esme Russo would be his, even though their families were at odds. For years he watched over Esme, making sure that no harm would come to her on account of her reckless & Impulsive nature. Due to a silly prank Esme had pulled, In order to protect her Luca is determined to marry her. He loves her, but he isn't sure that she will ever love him. Luca is a dominant man, he is worried that being gentle with Esme will make him go soft and fail in his duty to keep her safe. Esme knows that she has fallen in love with her husband, but due to being abounded at birth, she has a hard time saying the words. It would take a kidnapping attempt to make them resolve their issues. As usual in Shanna Handel books, her heroes are always swoon worthy, dominate men who demands obidiens, but would give their life for the women they love; and her fiesty, strong heroines will give them a run for their money. This is a great story that you won't be able to stop reading. I can't wait to read Cecily & Lance's story in Dark Kingdom!
I am LOVING Shanna's dark journey with this series!
Esme was the baby in a basket, left at Vincent Russo's door. Once Vincent adopted her she became the princess of the Russo kingdom. Which meant all eyes are on her...even eyes she had no idea about.
Luca Romano might bepart of the rival family, but he's always had his eye on Esme. He would rather tend to their land then handle family business.
When Esme's impulsivity gets her in deeper trouble than she can imagine, Luca comes to her rescue...or does he.
Luca and Esme together are dreamy! She's so caring, just wanting to be loved and accepted. Being dropped on a doorstep as an infant can take its toll on your soul. He's dominant yet attentive in such a low key way. The things that he's done for Esme over the years....SWOON! And Nonna, my heart absolutely burst with love.
Not quite in the Bachman world, but the do make an appearance
If you've read Shanna Handel, you're likely familiar with the Bachman books. This one is a little different than her Bachman romances... yet also similar. Different in that the main characters and their families aren't Bachmans. The MMC isn't even connected to them in any way; yet he definitely has some of the Bachman men's tendencies....if you've read any of the Bachman books, you get it. The head Bachman's (Tess and Bronson) do make an appearance though as the MFC's family does have a working connection with them.
In this story, there's animosity between the Romano (MMC) and Russo (MFC) families. The Romano's ancestors founded the town and are responsible for it's people thriving. They own and run the vineyards and fruit orchards that provide jobs for the locals and they also run an illegal gambling hall. They had all the influence and owned the town...until a young Vincent Russo showed up, bought the vacant castle, and with his mafia connections and illegal activities, soon became the wealthiest man in town splitting loyalties. While the Romano patriarch and two oldest sons realize peace and working together is the only way for all to succeed, the two youngest sons are angry and jealous of Russo's quickly gained wealth and influence. They thought Russo should be wiped out and orchestrated an unauthorized attack on Russo's wife hoping to start a war. The attack failed and the older Romano's managed to avoid a war, but peace is now tenuous and it won't take much to set it off. So when the Russo daughter (MFC) engages in a prank that goes horribly wrong, it puts her in grave danger with the Romano's and those loyal to them and there only one way to protect her....marriage...she must become a Romano.
This is a he fall's first, but it started long before the arranged marriage. As young children in school, like typical little boys when they like a girl, Luca Romano often teased Esme; pulled her braids, 'gifted' her frogs or lizzards and called nick-names she hated. As he grew older, his teasing became more a desire to protect her. Esme's tendancy for acting without thinking, and her father's lack of discipline, never curbed her impulsiveness, often putting her in potential danger. Esme didn't care for him because of his teasing and always thought the feeling was mutual for the same reason. And even though she thought him attractive as they grew older, she saw him as a bully, always getting into fights with other boys. However, a special gift on her 18th birthday and then his offer to marry to save her from the consequences of her ill planned prank, begin to make her wonder.
This is actually an easy, sweet read with lots of spice. Love that he fell first and always knew what he wanted from the beginning. Love that he indulges her yet doesn't hesitate to take her in hand when she does something that could put her in danger or cause unwanted attention or trouble. He will definitely teach her to be less impulsive. 4.75 stars

Dark Thrones is the second book in Shanna Handel’s Russo Royals series. In this book, readers are introduced to the Esme Russo, and Luca Romano. These two dynamic lead characters come from two opposing mafia families. The attraction between them goes back to their childhood. Luca was always her defender. Esme is young and still follows through with juvenile pranks that places her in precarious situations. To ensure everlasting protection and bring peace to the two rival families, Luca proposes a marriage. This, then, is their romantic journey.
I enjoy Ms. Handel’s writing style. I appreciate her use of a two-prong plot. The first being Esme and Luca’s romantic journey. The second dealing with family dynamics—older brother trying to keep the two youngest brothers--Rocco and Sergio, from causing more dissension amongst the two families. As Luca seeks the root cause behind their behavior, he uncovers a family secret. Ms. Handel pens remarkable dialog. Both her conversational and internal monologues reveal Esme and Luca’s backstories and highlight their personalities. Ms. Handel uses of descriptive language is outstanding. She paints vivid scenes. This is especially so relative to the interplay between Esme and Luca. These are so realistic. Readers witness how Luca patiently guides Esme through her childhood pranks to see the collateral damage that occurred due to her rash actions. Ms. Handel expertly presents a view into an arranged marriage growing it one of a loving couple. Well done, Ms. Handel.
Book 2 of this series is every bit as good as, if not better than, the first book Dark Crown. This time we follow the story of Esme (Vincent’s daughter) and Luca (son of the Romana Mafia leader). This is definitely a Romeo & Juliette style love story but is not a Tragedy. Luca, as to be expected, is very much an alpha male with strong Dom tendencies. He has watched Esme grow from infancy and has surreptitiously protected her from the get go. Esme is without doubt a sub even though she does not recognize herself as such. The back and forth banter and battles between these two is a continuous delight to behold. The plot has the expected Romeo & Juliette issues but also features an internal family rivalry with potentially deadly connotations. Ms. Handel builds a lot into her stories. Watch out for a totally unexpected/unforeseen twist nearing the conclusion! As always, you can expect a lot spankings (for disciplinary and/or foreplay) and sensuous erotic sex. Books 3 is beautifully set up in the Epilogue and is available now. 5 Stars
Dark Throne is the second book in the Russo Royals series, and is kind of a play on Romeo and Juliet. Luca and Esme have known each other since they were children, he was always her tormentor growing up. After an embarrassing scene and a prank gone wrong, Luca and Esme now have to get married. But will this couple find bliss in their marriage, or is this star-crossed couple doomed to disaster?
Oh my goodness, I can’t believe it took me so long to read this book! I have loved everything that I’ve read from Ms. Handel, so I knew I’d love this book, it just took me a while to finally read it. Hot dang, it did not disappoint!! I completely fell for this couple, for their fine line between hate and love, for their passion, and for the ways they want to keep each other safe. I loved learning about their history as they faced their future, too! Esme is sweet and caring, but she’s impulsive and doesn’t always think through her actions. She’s young, but I enjoyed her character. Luca was super swoon-worthy! I adored him. He might be a bit of a dark hero, but when you hear about his need for control, his need to keep his emotions on lock down, his history, and everything he yearns for, you can’t help but love him. And he’s perfect for Esme! They’re super passionate, he’s not afraid to be dominant, and I loved how their passions fueled their scenes. There’s some drama in this book, both between the characters and things that they need to face together, and I enjoyed that just as much as I did the character development! I loved this book and I’m really excited to dig into the next one!
A twisted and sexual spin on Romeo and Juliet, Dark Throne was EVERYTHING I could have hoped for and then some.
I LOVED Dark Throne. The second installment of the Russo Royals Series by Shanna Handel has everything from bully high school love, a cruel hero and deep emotions that made me smile and want to cry.
Dark Throne is a full stand-alone novel; however, I recommend you read Dark Crown first as you will get the complete picture of the Russo/Romano story. There is only 1 book prior to this that will catch you up.
Esme Russo is Vincent, the Mafia King, from Dark Crown book 1’s daughter. Esme is only 18. She has a free spirit, is sweet and if you read book 1, you recall she used to flirt with all the boys she could. See, being Vincent Romano’s adopted daughter brings its own set of difficulties as much as it does wealth and privilege. Esme needs guards with her at al times for protection. Even though Esme is young and carefree, she is a good person and I really liked her.
Luca is the 2nd eldest son of John Russo, another Mafioso family. The Russo’s are the second largest wealthiest Mafia family in Italy. The Russo’s and Romano’s have always been on opposing sides. Enemies to speak even though their castles are close in distance.
Esme only knows Luca as the mean bully who used to pick on her growing up. He used to pull her pigtails and always seems to be around to mess things up for her. Luca had his reasons. He has a lot on his shoulders with all of the family business to run.
Luca and Esme’s relationship are adorable and sexy AF with plenty of sexy scenes to enjoy. This book had it all from spanking to humiliation, all things dominant and dark. Only Shanna Handel could blend such declarations of love with unbridled lust.
I highly recommend this book to all Shanna Handel fan as well as anyone who enjoys a great sexy read!
Second wonderful book in this series, Luca had loved her for as long as he could remember he had watched over her from afar and anyone that tried to hurt her he would beat the up, ensure that no one messed with his girl. Esme has been teased un-mercilessly whilst she was a child as the “Baby In The Basket” dumped on some ones doorstep and he had become her father, he had raised her as his own and now she was about to leave the only family she had ever known and marry. As the story progresses and the characters story come into the open and the reason for the family alliance through this marriage and the fact that in fact this is the only way to ensure that Esme in becoming a Romano will be safe, protected and loved by her husband who is strict but fair and who believes family is everything. This is a truly wonderful read and as with the first book leaves with a very dramatic opening to the third book in this series, this means that I will be waiting anxiously for the next book to be released hopefully as soon as possible. I voluntarily received and review an Advanced Reader Copy I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to reading any future publications; keep up all the great writing.
Luca Romano has liked and protected Esme Russo since they were in grade school together. Some of his actions were considered bullying but in truth, he really was just trying to protect Esme. Well, except for those times when he wanted to mess with her. Luca has carried a heavy burden since he was six years old that ultimately left him with a need to be in control at all times. Esme was left in a basket on the doorstep of the Russo family when just a baby. It wasn't until she was seventeen when she was legally adopted so she has a few insecurities locked in her personality even if she doesn't show them. For decades, the Russos and the Romanoshave been rivals. That's why it was so easy to have tempers high when Esme wanted to get back at Luca for something he did and her prank had dire consequences. Can Luca fix this or will her actions be what sets fire to the war? The emotions and chemistry between these two are high. Once again Shanna Handel has delivered a storyline with strong characters, a terrific world, and given us drama, angst, chemistry, insecurities, love, and loss. This book can be standalone if someone didn't want to read the entire series but for the life of me, I can't begin to fathom why anyone would want to miss any part of this. It's absolutely wonderful.
Luca and Esme’s adventure is absolutely decadent! Like fine wine, it’s aged over time little to Esme’s knowledge. From a bully on the playground to a dominant protector, Luca has loved Esme since forever, but modern day Romeo and Juliet has not allowed him to act upon his desires. That was until the fiery little Russo princess crosses onto Romano territory with a prank that goes much too far. The alpha male in Luca will do what ever it takes to keep her from paying the price with his brothers and starting a war, even if it means she has a taste of leather. Shanna brings to life the heat and the passion behind a love forced by the hands of fate. Cannot wait for the next chapter of the Russo/ Romano family union in Dark Kingdom!! The snippet will leave you hot and bothered in addition to the heat you felt in Dark Throne!
So I know I'm kind of a jerk because authors are artists and they work hard on their art. But I couldn't get past 20% of this book. It's so juvenile. And I'm not a fan of these barely legal couples that are still growing into themselves and are just foolish. And our antihero, I guess, grabs this girl and pulls her over his knee and spanks her while telling her to leave but yet prolonging her stay. I would hope that she would be older when we got further into this book and maybe she does. And maybe at another point I may try to push further into this book. But today, there are too many other books in the world for me to try to force myself more into this one.
Esme was a young lady who was abandoned but found love from a man who raised her in his castle. Luca used his tormenting of Esme as a form of protection. She was a very impulsive young lady who made rash decisions that got into trouble. She was mad at Luca and tried to get him back by pulling a prank which burned down their shed. He had caught on their property earlier and spanked her and sent her home. The Romanos and the Russos were rival mafias and were constantly at war. Luca and his brother Lance was a way to bring peace between the families, so he asked for Esme had in marriage. Luca always loved Esme and she also had a deep feelings for him but didn’t want to admit. This was a beautiful story that I enjoyed reading.
Shanna Handel did a great job on Dark Throne, it was a great story, the plot and characters were strong, the book was written well, it was packed with many emotions. Luca and Esme were made for each other, they completed each other. The connection they had between them was off the charts, their chemistry was as well, it was steamy. Luca would have done anything when it came to his woman. Esme and Luca were great together, their journey may have had it's ups and downs but they made a strong pair. This was a great story. I'd suggest reading it. Thank you, Shanna Handel. Great work :) I'm looking forward to reading more.
The second book in this series is better than the first one, and the first one was awesome. I really love the connection between Luca and Esme. She's, in a nutshell, a spoiled mafia princess and always seems to be getting herself into trouble in one way or another. When Luca catches her on his family lands, he spanks her and sends her on her way home. She's conflicted about her feelings because while she's attracted to him and what he does to her, she doesn't WANT to be attracted to him. I enjoyed the banter between them and how he really did care for her. I also enjoyed getting a peek at Lance and Cecily!! Looking forward to their book which is next!!
I enjoyed reading Dark Throne. Esme celebrates her 18th birthday and decides to prank Luca. Well things don’t turn out as planned.. And after a big turn of events Luca and Esme find themselves at an altar. Luca has secretly loved Esme since the first time he met her and is willing to do anything to protect her ... even from herself. Luca is an alpha male who likes to be in charge. He is willing to spend forever proving his love for her. This book has some steamy moments that are hot and spicy! Thru twist some and turns Esme realizes she is in love. This book grabbed my attention from the first page. I cant wait to read the next book in the series!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Luca has waited a long time for Esme, ever since they were children. When he arranges things so that Esme has to marry him, she agrees because she loves him. He realizes that even though she does not want to leave her home, she will be obedient and come to to live in his larger home. She finds happiness there even though there is still problems between the families. I enjoyed the story and can't wait to see more books in the future from this author.
I received an advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The latest and amazing story by Shanna Handel! I couldn't put it down. I love this new series by her. I loved the interactions between Luca and Esme. Esme has always hated Luca for the way he treated her growing up. She doesn't know his true feelings for her. He always wanted to keep her safe. On the night of her birthday party, she sees him in a different light. When she pulls a prank that goes horribly wrong, she must trust him to help her out. They are getting married now. Will they find happiness together?
I received an ARC from the author/publisher for an honest review.
The second book in this series was phenomenal! I knew from book one that I was going to love Esme and I was right! I was happy to see her get her own happily ever after. She's fiesty and impulsive, but she's got a really sweet heart and a strong sense of family. Luca has known forever that he was meant to be her protector. When a prank gone wrong ties them together, making the most of it is a bit tricky. Luca is super hot and alpha, but he's also fiercely in love and that gives him a soft edge. Bring on book three!
Esme is full spirited young lady that had gone too far against a rival family. Even as a Russo, she isn't protected enough from Romano family power being that they're rival families. Luca has been in love with Esme since he first laid eyes on her growing up and always felt like he had to protect her. Well now he claimed Esme as his bride to fully protect her from her rash actions against his family name. This is a HEA, even with the darkness within the Romano history.
Firstly some things to get out of the way. This book can be read as a standalone and it won't impact on your enjoyment at all. Secondly, if you're looking for a dark mafia read, something maybe a bit hardcore, perhaps try a different author. This could be considered mafia-light. I quite enjoyed this read. It's a good, solid read with some engaging characters, and a big softie masquerading as a hard man. It did leave a couple of loose ends which I'm hoping will be tied up in future books, but this may annoy some readers.
Follows Esme Russo, adopted daughter to Vincenzo Russo (Vincent), king of the Italian mafia. Rivals to the Romano family.
Luca Romano, prince of the Romano mafia sindicate, has followed and tormented Esme since childhood. Always thinking, vwishing, wanting her. Now, as an adult, he wants to torment her further.. into his life, onto his lap.
Looking to mend the rift and find peace, their intertwining lives take on a modern day Romeo and Juliet spin. Very sweet, romantic quick read. These two are cute characters together with a lot of steamy s@x.
I enjoyed the games Luca and Esme played and the deep connection they had. The dark twisted family secrets were shocking and sad in a way. It takes a shock and awe moment before Esme can tell Luca she loves him. That kinda broke me! Luca's father John had a great amount of integrity and strength of character to live with the secrets and live the life he did. I admired John. The teaser for the next book is intriguing. Can't wait.
Luca Romano knows what he wants and he always gets what he wants, even if its Esme Russo adopted daughter of Vincent. With unrest between the families Luca finds the ideal to him solution. Hot and heavy with all spices of life you could wish for make this a super read as Shanna Handel has her twists and turns that you never know when war will be declared . Fabulous. I voluntarily reviewed this book.
