Goodreads giveaway

I won this book in a giveaway from Goodreads. Thanks goes out to the author and publisher for making it possible. I didn't think this one was as good as the first one. Some were pretty dark and twisted. The rest were just absurdly silly! At least I was able to get one book closer to my reading goal for the year. On to the next....

These are exactly what the title of the book says they are, and they're well-written and pack a punch. I'm just not keen on "Saw"-type torture situations. The stories in the second half of the collection, labeled "Supernatural" were more interesting to me - perhaps because they were less real.

A STORY SEED HAS BEEN PLANTED IN YOUR MIND
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2017
I read this book via a KINDLE Unlimited download.

As an aficionado and author of flash fictions, I’ve written an anthology of 100 Flash Fictions, where most of the stories only have five sentences, I can truly appreciate the efforts Mr. Pandza in compiling this collection.

This IS NOT the kind of book you can read by racing through it by any means. The best way to appreciate reading this author’s endeavor is to sit in a comfortable, quiet place. Close your eyes, clear your mind; with your mind clear, you slowly read each of the 242 items contained in this collection one by one. You stop and contemplate what you’ve just read as you try to visualize it. By doing this you’ll first get a basic image of what you’ve read, and as you continue to dwell on this image you should find your imagination creating an entire story which seems to keep on growing until you decide to move on to the next item.

For allowing me and anyone who reads this book, the opportunity to use our imagination to create complete stories in our minds, I’ve given Mr. Pandza 5 STARS.

Love these!!

I hope some of them become more than just 2 sentences. I am continuously amazed by how a story can be told (or at least implied) in just two sentences. Here is my riff on it:

After weeks of being held captive in the humid, grimy basement, Kate was finally allowed a shower. While ignoring the ants at her feet, imagine her surprise when all that came out of the shower head was a sticky, watery syrup mixture.

I won this book in a giveaway on Goodreads and I'm glad I did! I love horror stories, supernatural or otherwise. I like that the book separates the natural from the supernatural. You wouldn't think two sentences would be enough to really scare you but what you DON'T read can be just as scary as what you DO. Even for the shortest stories, well written imagery can make you live in the moment. Marko Pandza definitely makes you visualize exactly what he's writing. Some of the stories would do great fleshed out into longer works. Others are perfect as is. It's a quick read but worth reading again. Want some scary stories by a campfire this Halloween? This book is perfect!

3.5 stars rounded down. It's always interesting to read books like this. I'm always surprised at how much story can be packed into such a small amount of text. Some of these were really good. Some were just weird. A third sentence or just a few more words would have made several of them a lot better. (Granted couldn't be called two sentence horror stories then). Overall, it's a pretty fun, very quick read.

I won a Kindle copy of this book via Goodreads' Giveaways. (Thanks, Mr. Pandza!)

Brief, Horrible Moments 2 was a lot of fun, and by "fun," I mean horrifying. Almost every story was like a teeny tiny roller coaster. While each first sentence lifts you up with anticipation, the second sentences brings you careening down in a thrilling and terrifying way. Well done!

I would say I'd like to see longer works by Mr. Pandza because his sentences are pleasantly lyrical, but some artists do their best work in miniature. So, to paraphrase Steve Martin, let's stay small!

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. It in no way impacted my thoughts on the book.

These stories were silly in a good way. I laughed. I NOPEd. I got the creepy crawlies. This is the kind of book I like to read. The Kindle PDF was a little odd, and I think I would have enjoyed it more in print.

it’s like Twitter meets horror stories

I received a free digital copy of this book as a Goodreads Giveaway. Not sure I would’ve picked this to read on my own but I enjoy horror and I appreciate a concise writer, so 2 sentence horror stories peaked my interest! It was a fun twist to my general reading- dark poetic Twitter meets horror. Worth a read- I have to go back and read the first book now

I had received a copy of the first installment in this series from Goodreads a year or two ago, which I liked, so I decided to check this one out too. It was fine. There were some really creepy stories and some that were just meh. Overall a fun, quick, read though.

Review of eBook

A disoriented swimmer. A teacher helping a remedial student. A wife frustrated over the dirt her husband tracked into the house. Trapped miners. A shivering man waits for the long night to end. The invisibility problem. The twin that wants to switch places.

All with endings readers will find impossible to predict.

This collection of disturbing two-sentence horror stories is both unsettling and creepy; readers are sure to find plenty to cause grimaces and shudders.

Divided into two sections . . . Natural and Supernatural . . . the brief, two-sentence tales are macabre, eerie, and downright chilling. For the most part, these epigrammatic offerings are creatively clever, a tad enigmatic, and cleverly uncanny.

Recommended, especially for fans of the horror genre.

Basic Plot: Scary stories told in only 2 sentences.

I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway!

There are about 200 stories in this book, and reading them one after the other has an impact. They are all decidedly different, and might be best read 1 or 2 at a time, so the stories don't lose their impact. There are 2 sections: realistic and supernatural. The realistic ones play on the horrors of the modern day. The supernatural ones obviously deal with things beyond human cruelties and insanity. The author has gone out of his way to use names from different cultures and different genders, making this an oddly diverse book. Though, I must say, beyond names, there isn't much sense of culture. Not that there's really any time for cultural details in a 2-sentence story. Many gave me a decided "ick" reaction, but I don't know that any will haunt my nightmares. Guess I'm going to have to head to bed and find out.

Another Spookily Fun Collection

I loved the previous collection so when I saw a second one available I had to grab it.

I like how the stories are split into two chapters, one which is ‘Supernatural’ and the other which are set more in the ‘real world’: though still gruesomely horrific. Many made me ‘squick’ at the thought.

Do not need to have read the first collection but I’d recommend it if you enjoy this one, or like super short stories. Took about an hour for me to read but something I’d pick up again when I want something small to chew on.

Received for free from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review. DNF at 122 out of 227 pages. I just can’t. Too horrific for me. Completely recommend for fans of horror, intense horror. The flash fictions are well written but I can’t stomach the content. I used this for my @littleinklingsdesign #afbreadingchallenge2021 for an ebook. 1 star.

Trigger warnings

This book was every bit as good as first one. I thought that an excellent job was done with each and every two line story. I love the feeling that is produced with so few words. The author is a master of their art. If you have triggers of most any kind be careful picking this one up.

~Disclaimer: I received a free kindle copy of this book.~

TW: For a whole bunch of stuff. If you are sensitive to a wide array of potentially triggering topics then this isn’t for you.

I’ve recently started following r/twosentencehorror and between that and liking the first book I was excited to read this one.

The book is split into two parts: natural and supernatural.

The natural side actually got a bit too dark for me at times. But there was a good variety of stories.

“Blinded by the crashing waves of salt water, Celeste swam for her life, expending every last ounce of strength to get back to shore. Her husband screamed at the top of his lungs, but the ocean was too loud for Celeste to hear she was swimming away from the beach.” (Pg. 63)

The supernatural side was much easier to distance from reality and was for me a more enjoyable read.

“When Ava was a child, one tight hug from her doll Joliette would melt all her fears away. Ava kept Joliette bound and buried underground ever since she realized dolls aren’t supposed to hug back.” (Pg. 119)

My thanks to Goodreads for a copy of this new assemblage of horror short, short stories.

A collection of short tales, sometimes a sentence, maybe two or three, in the scary vividly horrific vein, which is also the second book in this I hope is a long running series. Much bleaker and more hostile in tone, and Hostel the movies in theme, the first section was a little too strong for me in the torture horror aspect. The second which are more supernatural, hence the name, I thought were a lot more fun, scary unsettling, not stomach upsetting. The first story especially dealing with a door, I thought was very good, for what the mind filled in around what was on the paper.

Horror is as much a reflection of the times as it is a writer's view of the world, and in his introduction the author does mention that 2020 was not fun. Hence maybe the darker tone of the stories. Still it is amazing the emotion that Mr. Pandza can get in a few words. That quote about how jazz is the notes you don't play, well horror to Mr. Pandza are the words he does not write. I'm interested to see what he does next.

I love reading the two sentence horror story Reddit, so I was excited to see there was a whole collection of them. This book has a variety of different stories. Some are interesting and make you think. Some I just read at face value without having any reaction. Some were meh. And some honestly didn't make sense to me after re-reading them.

For me, the mark of a good two sentence horror story is a first sentence that is ambiguous and can be interpreted as generally a good thing. The second sentence then introduces the horror that makes you think back to that first sentence. A good two sentence horror should make you want to re-read the whole thing immediately after finishing to see what details you missed the first time around. I did this a few times in the book, but not nearly enough for me to be satisfied.

Overall it was a pretty quick read, and if you are just getting into these type of stories it can be a good place to start. Having said that, after reading it, I can't say I need to rush to read it again anytime.

***I received a free e-copy via Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for a honest review.***

I usually click on Ranker articles on FB, the ones that have a similar premise to this book and I honestly thought that the book just might be a collection of those stories.

Nope. All come from one author.
I've never read the first book, obviously.

I'm glad this was an e-book because I would have been highly annoyed if the print book was formatted like the Kindle version, with one "story" per page. I feel like 5 or so could have shared a page. Barely took 30 minutes to finish this and could have finished it sooner except I sat it down a couple of times because I was tired of swiping. 😂

I get that they ate supposed to be horror, but not gonna lie, several made me laugh internally or at least snort out loud.

There was a couple that didn't make much sense to me, but I'm guessing they did to the author, having a broader picture in his head of what he was intending to portray on paper.

All in all, a decent read and a good time killer.

I received this book for free through a Goodreads giveaway.

This is a book of two-sentence horror stories divided into "Natural" and "Supernatural" sections.
I found that the stories are best read no more than a few at a time, in order to let the horror of each story sink in for a bit before moving on to the next one. This is perfect for when you have little time to read.

I liked the stories in the "Supernatural" section best. I thought they were scarier than the ones in the "Natural" section. That may just be me, however.
Some of the "Supernatural" stories don't seem to belong there; for example there's nothing really supernatural about .

The stories in the "natural" section tended to be gorier. I'm not a fan of gore, though I can tolerate some. I prefer the M. R. James method of writing gore: just enough information to let each reader conjure up the scariest thing they can imagine.
There's a reason why this book has a warning at the beginning; some of the content here can get intense. At times it was a bit too much for me, but your mileage may vary.

My only real complaint is the formatting of the ebook. It appears to be impossible to re-size the font, zoom in, or use any kind of night mode setting. Unfortunately, all of that makes it a little rough on the eyes. The font/zoom thing may not be a big deal on a kindle or tablet, but it's an issue on a smartphone.
The lack of any night mode means that in any low-light situation your eyeballs will get seared. I was able to get a tiny bit of respite by switching my phone's display from "adaptive" to "basic" but it's still too bright to read this comfortably at night.

However, with that said, I do still recommend this book. It's a good way to while away a rainy afternoon.

This book had the potential to be so good, but it was so, so bad. I personally thought the stories were just a little bit too short. Most were around 2-4 sentences, which made most of the stories feel like writing prompts you'd find on tumblr. Similarly, a lot of the stories felt like they were going for cheap shock value rather than tapping into any particular emotions or tropes - again, something I think could have been fixed by making the stores just a little bit longer. Many of the stores also felt like the author, Pandza, was trying to be super duper edgy. It really came off like an angsty, edgelord middle schooler trying out horror writing for the first time. Overall, it came off as a cheap attempt at horror and really did not work. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be reading more of these if Pandza comes out with more.

Liked this more than I thought I would

I received this in a giveaway, but that has not influenced my review in any way.

I've read and written two sentence stories before. It's not that tough to come up with a couple that are cleverly written and entertaining. But I haven't read an entire collection of them from a single author and was curious to see how they would hold up. At best I expected a handful of good, a handful of mediocre, and the rest low quality filler. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality. Don't expect masterpieces - they're only two sentences. But most landed for me.

I may be biased. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars. I'm taking medication (which I'll be stopping soon thank goodness) that causes a brain fog that makes it very hard to read anything - even flash fiction. These two sentence stories in a genre I enjoy

Short stories only written in two sentences but have a twist. Many I thought were quite clever.

It's amazing that a whole story can be written or implied in just two sentences.

These could also work great as prompts or inspiration for writing classes.

I imagine reading this book with friends while gathering around a campfire could be an interesting activity as well.

The stories can be disturbing, but that should not come as a surprise to anyone, it is a book about horrible moments, and people.

At times, particularly at the beginning, I felt the order of the stories could have been more random so the same theme (like stuff about skin) doesn't show up in close proximity, dulling the impact some.

It was a good and interesting read overall, and if you like horror, I definitely recommend it.

Disclaimer: I won a copy of this book during a Goodreads giveaway and this is my honest review.

I will admit that I haven't read "Brief, Horrible Moments: A collection of one sentence horror stories" the first part of this series. However, I enjoyed this collection of two sentence horror stories! I found each story to be clever and unique. It's an art to tell an entire story in two sentences! If you're looking for a quick entertaining creepy read, this is perfect for you!!! There is a variety of stories in this collection with multiple different themes. I had fun reading this book!

As for the layout of the book itself, I found the Kindle edition to be decent. Formatting wise, for the Kindle edition the sentences were a bit small, which wasn't an issue for me personally, but some readers may need to enlarge the font size of the sentences in order to read each story more easily.

Unique read

I won this in a Goodreads giveaway. The 3 stars are for personal preference reasons ,not quality of the work reasons. I lean towards spooky not depraved horror and love the contrast of good hearted people versus evil. With two sentences, it is impossible to build character enough to make that dynamic a thing. So,the first section ,Natural, came off as strictly depraved and nasty. The second section ,Supernatural ,was more to my taste. All that being said, if you have tried to write two sentence stories ,you know it is a near impossible task to cause an emotional impact with so little words to work with. Marko Pandza pulls it off with a good number of the stories. This was a unique reading experience.
