Seriously one of the worst books I ever read. I'm actually astonished it got published in such a state. There is a huge discrepancy in terms of quality between volumes 1 and 2, I can hardly believe the same author wrote them. I didn't think the first volume was incredible but it was a solid read with a compelling story, interesting characters and a sweet love story. The second volume is an absolute disaster that completely destroyed everything that was put in place in the first book.
The characters, who were developed and likeable, became soooo obnoxious, it was unbearable. I literally wanted to slap every single one of them almost every time they opened their mouth and sometimes even when they didn't. The fact that the characters became so awful and unlike themselves (Nisai, by the gods, what the hell happened ??) ruined in time all the relationships: the love story between Rakel and Ash obviously but also the touching friendship between Ash and Nisaï as well as every other relationship. But even without those awful, just awful, characters, these relationships were all doomed from the start by the way they were handled: so many inconsistencies, shifts in relationship's dynamics ("I love you, I hate you" : they switched every chapter with no plausible explanation except the need for drama (and awfully handled at that because they made me feel NO emotion except annoyance) and NOT A SINGLE interesting or touching scene of bonding, reunion, etc. Gods, the reunions between the characters in this book were just ridiculous at this stage.
I've also never read a book so anti-climatic... All the "important" scenes (and there were MANY, this is the last volume in a duology) were butchered. Gods, the first main bad guy (until 5 seconds before his death you weren't even sure he was a bad guy) died killed by a character nobody knew, from afar, in 3 lines. The other main bad guy, the "real" one was literally killed in two lines (I had to reread it to make sure but yeah that was it).
So many info dumps... I'd never seen this level of info dump in a novel before and it wasn't even the first book in the series! And it was so well done in book 1: what happened??
The plot made absolutely NO SENSE. You don't understand Iddo's motives, who until now was portrayed as a loving brother and a smart general. He didn't even seem interested in the throne! And he tried to conquer an empire THAT WAS ALREADY HIS and that his brother wasn't threatening as he had renounced the throne. The entire thing with Doskai was just... seriously? Doskai doesn't appear, speak, or do anything. Characters aren't even sure he exists by the end of the book but he's the great vilain? And the doctor's motives were so unclear: he just wanted chaos and death for his god? So unbelievable and unrelatable. And many things were clearly left unexplained because they made no sense: How did the doctor manage to find out how to trigger their power? What was that black smoke? Why did Luz had to trigger an explosion in the capital? How did they figure it out? What did that cloud do exactly? How did the cursed children learned how to tame their power? How are they gonna remain their control on them now that the cloud is going away? Why is it going away? Why trigger it to make it disappear a year later? How did Luz survive? What does this freaking flower have to do with everything ? etc.
There were at least 5 inconsistencies in every chapter. It was so painful to read. This review is long enough I'm not gonna list them all, it would take me two days, but ask me for specific examples in the comments if you're interested, I would be happy to oblige.
SO: characters, no, relationships, no, writing, mew, plot, no, inconsistencies, YES = awful awful book. And with such a promising start it's just... there are no words.

OCENA: 2,5 ⭐️ Dylogia Freestone zabiera czytelnika do królestwa Aramteshu gdzie religię tworzą zapachy. Na przestrzeni książek sprawdza się to różnie, natomiast nie można odmówić autorce oryginalnego pomysłu.

Pierwsza cześć (Kwiat Mroku) pomimo swojej schematyczności wciąga i zostawia po sobie wrażenie „muszę wiedzieć co dalej”. 😉

Z drugą (Korona Światła) miałem problem, ponieważ sympatyczni bohaterowie z „jedynki” są bardziej rozproszeni, a ich relacja na stronach powieści ma za mało miejsca. I choć w trakcie książka nie porywa, prowadzi do fajnego finału i zakończenia odpowiednio wieńczącego opowieść. Serię polecam Wam ze względu na pierwszą część i zapachy, które może nie zostały wykorzystane nawet w 80%, ale urozmaicają powieść z gatunku fantasy.

In der Welt der Shadowscent-Dilogie haben Düfte eine große Macht. P.M. Freestone hat schon im ersten Band bewiesen, dass sie es schafft, Worte für etwas zu finden, das eigentlich zu flüchtig ist, um es zu beschreiben. Nun macht die Autorin von diesem Talent erneut Gebrauch – und auch abseits davon erinnerten mich die Stärken und Schwächen von „Die Krone des Lichts“ stark an „Die Blume der Finsternis“.
Es ist nicht von der Hand zu weisen, wie imposant und außergewöhnlich das Setting ist, das Freestone geschaffen hat. Leider wurde es aber wie schon in Band 1 für mich nie gänzlich greifbar. Erneut gab es für meinen Geschmack zu wenig Erklärungen. Ich liebe es, wenn Autor*innen ihre Welten detailreich aufbauen, doch verliert das für mich den Reiz, wenn das Gefühl einsetzt, es würden eher vordergründige Eindrücke, als die Aspekte dahinter erklärt werden. Gerade bei Fantasy ist die Balance zwischen Beschreibung und Handlung meiner Meinung nach oft ein Drahtseilakt und bei „Die Krone des Lichts“ mein großer Kritikpunkt.
Die Spannung hat sich zunächst nur sehr langsam aufgebaut und wurde zusätzlich von den Beschreibungen ausgebremst, die sich in meinem Kopf zu keinem Bild formen wollten. Wie ein Puzzle, zu dem mir entscheidende Verbindungsstücke fehlten. Es gab einen Rahmen und viele Teile, die allesamt wunderschön waren, aber nicht zusammengefügt werden konnten. Ich weiß, eine kryptische Beschreibung. So hat sich das Buch für mich zwischenzeitlich selbst ein Bein gestellt – und meine Aufmerksamkeitsspanne wirklich auf die Probe gestellt. Schade, denn an sich war das Setting, wie schon oben erwähnt, wahrlich beeindruckend, und auch die Charaktere sowie ihre Entwicklungen und der eigentliche Plot haben mir gut gefallen. Es gibt vieles, wofür sich das Buch lohnt… Aber eben auch das Wissen, dass ich zwischenzeitlich wirklich Probleme damit hatte, mich zum Lesen zu motivieren.
Abschließend glaube ich, dass Band 2 allen gefallen könnte, die schon an dem Vorgänger Freude hatten. Wer allerdings dabei unsicher war, wird vermutlich auch mit dem Finale der Dilogie nicht gänzlich zufrieden sein. 3 Sterne.

I didn’t know what to expect but this wasn’t it. It had it moments where it was good but all up I just didn’t see the point of this story. It quickly covered rakel and her mum, ash and even gave us another point of view from Luz. Such an interesting and mysterious character but I still don’t understand what their purpose was. This book just left me confused especially with the ending since this is only a duology.

Rakel hat nach der Rettung des Prinzen das Kaiserreich verlassen. Sie ist weiterhin auf der Suche nach einem Heilmittel gegen die Heimsuchung, die auch ihren Vater befallen hat. Währenddessen konnte Ash sich befreien und ist auf der Suche nach ihr und dem Prinzen, denn es steht ein Krieg im Kaiserreich bevor.

Bei diesem Buch handelt es sich um den 2. und letzten Teil der Reihe. Ich habe den 1. Teil vor einem Jahr gelesen, habe aber zur Auffrischung im Dezember noch einmal das Hörbuch gehört. Das war wirklich sehr hilfreich. Ich kann jeden nur empfehlen die Bücher kurz hintereinander zu lesen.

Zu den Erzähl-Perspektiven von Rakel und Ash, kommt ihm 3. Teil noch die Sicht von Luz dazu. Ich muss gestehen, dass ich bis zum Schluss nicht wusste, wer das ist, obwohl ich das Hörbuch von Teil 1 gerade erst gehört hatte. Mir ist einfach nicht eingefallen, welche Rolle er im 1. Teil gespielt hat.

Mit ein paar Startschwierigkeiten konnte mich die Handlung dann ab einem bestimmen Zeitpunkt wieder sehr fesseln. Wir erfahren im 2. Teil mehr über Rakels Mutter, was ich sehr spannend fand. Auch Ash’s Schatten und die Romanze zwischen ihm und Rakel sind wieder zentrales Thema.

Das Ende hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Von mir gibt es auch für den 2. Teil die volle Punktzahl.

I had to take some time to think about this ending. Crown of Smoke was one of my most awaited reads of this year. I really enjoyed Shadowscent last year, so I was super looking forward to this one. But, when I finished reading I wasn't blown away by the ending but rather there was this insatiable feeling.

I would strongly recommend reading them back to back or re-read the first one before embarking on the second part of this adventure. I personally didn't, and because I have a brain of a goldfish, I struggled to connect certain pieces or get certain references of this world. The writer does not offer you a recap of what happened in the other book, except the obvious, but the reader is just pushed in the wild of the empire of Aramtesh.

Let me tell you again, I loved this world so much, with its scents and gods and I loved so much its characters. There is a great seamless queer and non-binary representation. And Ash! His story is going to break your heart. And so, considering this is supposed to be the ending of the second book, it felt like there were parts of this story, certain dynamics of these characters left incomplete or rushed. I truly hope the writer will gift us with another book. It's an amazing original fantasy story and I will always recommend it to every fellow reader.

Endlich geht es zurück nach Aramtesch ins Reich der Düfte. Ich war sehr gespannt wie die Geschichte ausgeht und was die Autorin sich für den Anschluss überlegt hat:

Rakel verlässt das Kaiserreich, um mehr über ihre Vergangenheit zu erfahren. Gleichzeit nutzt sie ihre Gabe und feines Gespür für Gerüche um ein Heilmittel gegen die Seuche zu finden, die von ihrem Vater Besitz ergriffen hat. Jedoch wird sie immer wieder von den Gedanken an Ash abgelenkt. Ash versucht das Kaiserreich vor einem drohenden Unheil zu bewahren. Es steht ein Krieg bevor dessen Ursprung schon so alt wie die Götter selbst sind. Dabei ist es egal, ob König, Adliger oder Diener das Böse macht vor niemandem halt...

Zu Beginn musste ich mir nochmal ins Gedächtnis rufen, was alles in Band 1 passiert ist, das war nach einem Jahr leider nicht mehr so ganz präsent. Deshalb ist mir der Einstieg in die Geschichte auch etwas schwergefallen. Nach den ersten paar Seiten ging es aber dann wieder und ich konnte mich dann wieder gut in die Welt einfinden. Allerdings fand ich es schade, dass das Worldbuilding nicht vertieft wurde. Generell hab ich einiges besser verstanden als damals bei Band eins, allerdings wäre hier noch sehr viel mehr drin gewesen.

Was mir sehr gut gefallen hat, war das wir neben den Kapiteln von Rakel und Ash bekommen wir nun noch Luz dazu und diese Kapitel fand ich wirklich spannend gestaltet und gaben der Geschichte nochmal frischen Wind. Die Geschichte um Rakel und ihre Mutter war interessant hätte aber etwas intensiver sein können. Ansonsten gab es leider wenig Charakterentwicklung, hier hätte sich die Autorin etwas mehr Zeit lassen können so das wir die Charaktere besser verstehen können. Das die Liebesgeschichte nicht so präsent war fand ich wiederum sehr gut.

Der Schreibstil ist flüssig und einfach gehalten so das man der Geschichte gut folgen kann. Dennoch fand ich, dass einige Szenen nicht wirklich ausgearbeitet sind und man dadurch das Gefühl hat man verpasst einiges. Hier wäre ein dritter Band eventuell sinnvoll gewesene um die durchaus komplexe Welt besser zu erklären und die Charaktere und Story etwas ausführlicher auszuarbeiten.

Insgesamt bewegt sich der Abschluss auf dem gleichen Niveau wie Band eins. Die Welt, die hier erschaffen wurde ist wirklich interessant und auch die Charaktere aber es fehlt einfach an der Ausarbeitung. Dadurch verliert eine wirklich tolle Idee und ein interessantes Setting an Wirkung. Nichtsdestotrotz weiß die Geschichte zu unterhalten und beschert dem Leser ein paar nette Lesestunden.

I was a tad... unsatisfied? By how everything was resolved at the end. It wasn't bad or anything, it just felt a bit dampened. It's very hard to explain, because even though it was a good ending, and objectively a happy ending, something still felt.. off. Maybe it was because things happened quickly at the end, then again, the ending was just as fast-paced as the entire series. Again, it's hard to describe. I loved the duology to pieces, but something about this ending just FELT off.

This book didnt grip me as much as the first one or as much as I had hoped it would. I adored book 1 and had high hopes for this but it just felt like the pacing was off. A lot didnt happen for ages and when it did it felt a little anticlimactic. I'm glad I read it and the writing itself is very descriptive but sadly as the second in a duology it just didnt have the impact the first book had.

Meinung:
Die Autorin P.M. Freestone hat nach wie vor einen wirklich besonderen Schreibstil, doch leider konnte sie mich mit dem Finale nicht abholen.

Das Buch startet schon überraschend, denn wir starten nicht wie erwartet aus der Perspektive von Rakel oder Ash, nein, wir lesen aus Luz ihrer perspektive.
Grundsätzlich finde ich Luz total interessant als Charakter, es gibt da nur ein großes Problem, ihre Motive waren die ganze Zeit über nicht greifbar.
Die Passagen von ihr waren durchaus spannend und auch sehr interessant, doch es fehlte einfach zu viel, um sie als Figur verstehen zu können.
Generell mag ich es aus verschiedenen Perspektiven zu lesen, doch die Autorin hat es hier wie ich finde, nicht gut umgesetzt.
Die Personen befinden sich oftmals an völlig unterschiedlichen Stellen in der Geschichte, was nicht immer klar zu erkennen ist.
Dies fand ich im ersten Band deutlich besser.
Zwischendurch verliert man leicht den Überblick, wer gerade wo ist und wie die Person dorthin gekommen ist.
Diese Verwirrung hätte man mit wenigen Sätzen mehr vermeiden können, so empfand ich es leider als störend.

Grundsätzlich konnte man der Geschichte ganz gut folgen, doch die Balance zwischen lang gezogen und zu kurz gehalten, ist hier katastrophal.
An einigen Stellen habe ich mich wirklich gelangweilt, weil diese zäh wie ein Kaugummi waren und dennoch nichtssagend.
Es gab superviele Situationen, wo es einfach an Detailreichtum und Information gemangelt hat.
Dies hätte man oft mit wenigen Sätzen lösen können, diese Informationslosigkeit zieht sich durch den gesamten zweiten Band.
Im ersten Band ist schon einiges offen geblieben, aber da ich wusste, das es einen Zweiten gibt, konnte ich da noch nachsichtig sein, beim Finale leider nicht.
Manchmal wird in einer Situation die Perspektive gewechselt, sodass wir dann ganz woanders sind und wenn wir dann zu vorherigen Perspektive wechseln, sind wir dann auch plötzlich ganz woanders.

Die Geschichte zwischen Rakel und ihrer Mutter fand ich durchaus interessant, aber es fehlte mir ein wenig an Intensität.
Auch hat mich die Distanz zwischen Ash und Nisai etwas gestört.
Sie sind seid Kindestagen beste Freunde, hatten eine Verbundenheit miteinander, die schön war und nun nach den Vorfällen ist der Umgang zwischen den beiden einfach zu krass distanziert.

Den Orden Asmudtags fand ich unglaublich interessant, doch wir als Leser bleiben da genauso unwissend wie die Bevölkerung Aramtesch.
Die Schattenkrieger sind ein wichtiges Thema im zweiten Band, doch auch hier sind die Informationen wirklich rar gesät.
Shadowscent hat vieles offengelassen, was ich in Geschichten wie diesen als ein Muss empfinde.

Was ich wirklich schön fand, ist die Tatsache, dass es nun eine wirklich schöne Karte gibt.

Fazit:
P.M. Freestone hat mich mit Shadowscent (2): Die Krone des Lichts leider sehr enttäuscht.
Obwohl wir hier fast 500 Seiten zum Lesen haben, schafft es die Autorin durchweg wichtige Informationen vorzuenthalten.
Das Potenzial dieser Geschichte ist so groß, doch leider meiner Meinung nach nicht ausgeschöpft.
Es gibt tatsächlich Szenen, die sich lang gezogen und zäh anfühlen und das, obwohl es ständig an Informationen mangelt, aber vielleicht auch gerade weil einige Szenen dadurch nichtssagend waren.
Hier wird oftmals von Szenario zu Szenario gesprungen, ohne das Vorherige zumindest sauber abzuschließen.
Auch die Charaktere, die ich im ersten Band gelobt habe, konnten mich nicht so wirklich abholen.
Leider konnte mich das Finale generell überhaupt nicht emotional berühren, was ich tatsächlich sehr schade fand.
Ich habe durchgehend versucht, dieses Buch zu mögen, da ich die Grundgeschichte/Idee und vor allem die Welt so faszinierend und gut finde, doch leider hat es beim Finalen band leider nicht geklappt.

Der erste Band hat mich mit gemischten Gefühlen zurück gelassen, die Idee selbst hat mich fasziniert, die Charaktere überzeugt, doch fehlte es mir Streckenweise etwas an Spannung. Diese steigerte sich gegen Ende mit einem dicken Cliffhanger. Daher war ich trotz aller Kritik gespannt auf die Fortsetzung.
Der Beginn war schwierig, denn ein Jahr nach dem ersten Teil sind viele Details nicht mehr gegenwärtig. Eine kurze Zusammenfassung hätte mir den Einstieg wesentlich erleichtert, zumindest ein Personenregister wäre hilfreich gewesen.
Zu den Kapiteln aus Rakels und Ashs Perspektive gesellt sich nun eine dritte Person, Luz. Diese Kapitel fand ich von Anfang an spannend, da es den typischen Mix aus zwei Hauptprotagonisten mit (hier angedeuteter) romantischer Verbindung auffrischt und der Erzählung von Beginn an etwas neues verleiht.
Der Schreibstil ist leicht, doch tauchen immer wieder aktuelle und abgewandelte Redewendungen auf, die für mich entweder etwas zu modern für das Setting wirken, oder mich dazu brachten über den ursprünglichen Wortlaut nachzudenken. Zwar brachten mich die Formulierungen manchmal aus dem Lesefluss, doch andererseits waren es auch Stellen sich mich schmunzeln ließen.
Die einzelnen Handlungsstränge hatten von Anfang an mehr Spannung als der erste Band, zumal der Klappentext nicht annähernd so viel vorweg genommen hat. Die politischen Verstrickungen bekamen ebenfalls mehr Aufmerksamkeit, leider habe ich dazu aus dem ersten Teil zu wenig behalten. Viele Lücken schließen sich erst viel später.
Emotional hat mich die Geschichte ganz gut erreicht, doch hauptsächlich die Spannungen untereinander, wie zwischen Rakel und ihrer Mutter. Romantische Gefühle waren in der Geschichte eher nebensächlich und erreichten mich daher etwas weniger.
Insgesamt sollte man den zweiten Band möglichst bald nach dem ersten lesen, um die Geschichte richtig genießen zu können.
Der Abschluss der Geschichte hat mir gefallen, P. M. Freestone hat eine ungewöhnliche Welt geschaffen mit interessanten Charakteren.

Nachdem ich Shadowscent: Blume der Finsternis gerade erst gerereadet habe, ist mir der Einstieg in das Buch sehr leicht gefallen. Leider ist mir so auch schnell aufgefallen, dass viele Dinge, die ich an Band 1 auszusetzen hatte auch hier wieder auftauchen. Aber erstmal zu den positiven Aspekten:

Was mir auch in diesem Band wieder gut gefallen hat, sind der Schreibstil und das Setting gewesen. Die Geschichte lässt sich schnell und flüssig lesen und obwohl mir die Duftbeschreibungen manchmal etwas zu viel wurden, haben sie meinen Lesefluss nicht gestört. Außerdem hat mich die erneute Reise einiger Charaktere wieder in neue Gebiete der magischen Welt geführt, wo es wieder einiges zu entdecken gab.

Leider konnten mich die Charaktere wie schon in Band 1 nicht vollständig in ihren Bann ziehen. Weder Rakel noch Ash oder Luz sind mir so richtig sympathisch, so habe ich mich ihnen auch nicht besonders verbunden gefühlt. Des Weiteren sind auch in diesem Band einige der Wendungen recht vorhersehbar. So war das Buch zwar unterhaltsam, konnte für mich aber den Status eines berauschenden, magischen Fantasy-Epos nicht erreichen.

Wer nach einem Buch mit einer originellen Grundidee, einem größtenteils orientalisch inspirierten Setting und verschiedenen Erzählperspektiven sucht, wird beim Shadowscent-Zweiteiler fündig.

Powiedzenie, że jestem tylko zawiedziona to przesada.

Tak jak w pierwszym tomie nie rozumiałam negatywnych opinii, tak w tej wcale się nie dziwię.
Nie dość, że jedyne duo, które łączyło fabułę, cały tom jest w innych stronach świata i przeskakiwanie między nimi jest męczące w tej sytuacji, to jeszcze końcówka scala w ich bezsensowny sposób.

Tytuł w sumie to z czapy, wiele nierozwiązanych tematów. Byłam pewna nawet, że jest tego trzeci tom, albo jakaś krótsza novela, dodatek COKOLWIEK, bo własnym oczom nie wierzyłam, że nawiązanie tytułu było dosłownie na ostatniej 428 stronie xD
Młyn, nie wiadomo co do czego, jeden rozdział jest w ogóle przerwany w połowie i nigdy się nie dowiedziałam co takiego Rakel zobaczyła.
A w polskim wydaniu napotkałam tyle literówek (mogłabym nawet powiedzieć, że tak co drugą stronę, kilka słów).
Nie ukrywam, coś mnie opuściło przy tym tomie. Pragnę tylko zapomnieć, że go dotknęłam i że w ogóle go kupiłam.

A dramatic and satisfying conclusion to the Shadowscent duology! Rakel and Ash are pulled apart as the empire teeters on the edge of civil war, and their separate journeys add tension and emotional weight. The scent-based magic remains as weird and wonderful as ever, and the stakes feel bigger, bolder, and more personal. A solid 4-star finish to a truly unique fantasy series.

Alors que j’avais adoré le premier tome de cette duologie pour son côté rafraîchissant et inédit de par son aspect olfactif, j’ai été surpris de découvrir cette fois-ci un roman explosif et détonnant.

En effet, la plume de P. M. Freestone n’a jamais été aussi directe et acerbe qu’avec cette conclusion. A tel point que j’ai été déboussolé pendant les premiers chapitres et que je n’étais pas certain d’apprécier cette lecture. D’autant plus que l’auteure ne prend pas le temps de situer le lecteur ce qui m’a demandé un minimum d’efforts afin de retrouver mes repères. Fort heureusement je suis quand même parvenu à me plonger au cœur de celle-ci et j’ai fini par être happé par cette explosion d’action. Mieux encore, j’ai retrouvé sa fluidité et sa facilité de lecture.

Le style de n’est pas le seul élément à évoluer. En effet, Rakel, ce singulier personnage m’avait beaucoup plu par le passé et là encore j’ai ressenti une réelle évolution. J’apprécie toujours autant ce personnage bien que bien moins nuancé et beaucoup plus frontal. Afin de déjouer les plans de ses ennemies et de sauver ceux auxquels elle tient, celle-ci n’hésitera pas à risquer sa vie et à prendre d’importantes décisions. C’est une véritable guerrière qui nous est dévoilée. Je suis vraiment ravi du travail réalisé par l’auteure autour de ce personnage car ce dernier n’aura cessé de me régalé.
Malheureusement, à l’instar de sa coéquipière Ash m’a semblé parfois moins brillé dans cet épisode. Même si j’ai apprécié le retrouver, il m’a semblé beaucoup moins développé. Pour autant j’étais curieux de découvrir comment ce dernier allait parvenir à maîtriser ses nouvelles capacités. Ainsi les parties concernant son apprentissage m’ont convaincu. De plus, un nouveau point de vue est dévoilé et alors que choix me laissait perplexe, je l’ai trouvé judicieux. Luz permet à l’auteure de mettre en avant ses intrigues et complots politiques et d’apporter d’important détails à son univers et à sa mythologie aussi complexe que saisissante.

Finalement et bien que surprenante, P. M. Freestone conclu avec énergie sa saga et si le précédent tome brillait pour sa fraicheur, celui-ci brille pour son dynamise et son action. Dès les première page le ton est donné et c’est un récit haletant et palpitant qui nous est amené.

I am lost for words. In fact, I almost DNF this book.
If not for the likeable character Luz, who deserves a star for her quirkiness, this book would only have attained a solid 0.5 star rating. And here is why....

The book is literally written out of point from the original plot!!!! *face-palm* Meaning the synopsis fails to match the content. For example, Rakel being upset over the Ash's death spends her time focusing on finding a cure for the Rot and the only people mentioned to be suffering from it is her father, Nisai's father and prisoners in the dungeon????? It turns out she didn't even need to find a cure as her mother apparently has already developed a cure just that it uses too much of a particular rare flower and they are trying to find another cure that doesn't use too much of the rare flower??? And the plot of this is just abandon and resolved with a coincidence of Nisai's father dying in the hands of his physician and Rakel's father recovering just because her mother shovel the original cure in his hand. And that is it for the Rot, only her father gets cure. Although at the end of the book this is revisited stating people who had the Rot are making a mysterious recovery??? Why add this to the plot even?!

Apart from this, the focus is mainly shifted towards each character discovering the relationship between each other. For example, who hates who, who can tolerate who, who has feelings for who and the list goes on. There barely is any mention of how the enemy is preparing for war until the last few chapter then both princes march to war against each other. Like there wasn't even any explanation as to why Nisai's brother wanted to rule over his little brother.

Most laughable of all is the easy convenience death of the enemies. 1 shrouded in shadow and falling off his horse and dead on the ground and the other lifted above the ground and dropped to his death. It all happens in just 1 page for each character. If killing off both characters is that easy why is there a need to prolong the story with unnecessary filler which does not aid in the plot. This book could have easily been written in 1 book rather than a duology.

Also, I am confused at how the side character (Luz) in book 1 can overtake the MC (Rakel) in book 2. Meaning to say without Luz the MC is completely useless.

I had high expectation for this book and sad to say I am deeply disappointed.

Really great sequel to the first one which I really enjoyed. I liked the character development and changes they went through as they each had to adjust to new events and how they all grew through it. I am so so so happy that we got pov from Luz cos they're my favourite and their viewpoint is always so funny to read! A really satisfying ending but one which still has me going aaaaaaaa I want to know what happens nexttttttttt!! Definitely recommend both of the books in this duology they're really fun and the continued world building in this book made me very happy

Pierwszy tom bardzo mi się podobał i oczarował swoim światem, drugi za to... No ciągnął się w nieskończoność. Strasznie opornie mi to szło i choć jak już się wzięłam to szło dosyć ładnie, ale ciągle było coś ciekawszego do roboty, a i książka sama w sobie nie wywarła na mnie większego wrażenia. Oczekiwania po pierwszym tomie były ogromne, a to było takie... okay... Zwłaszcza im bliżej końca, tym jakoś oporniej to szło :(

Took me quite a few chapters immerse myself back into the Shadowscent world, it needed a few subtle reminders of the previous book woven throughout those first few chapters. Enjoyed the overall storyline and the chapters from Zakkarus, who clearly needs their own origin story. It didn't quite hold the same intensity unfortunately.

I liked this book there were some really cute moments but at other points I was a bit bored and Luz’s pov was a bit wordy it was hard to get through the chapters sometimes. I’m glad I read it because it finished off well from the 1st book I just wish it was a bit better

Not as good as the first one. The pacing seemed all over the place and I didn’t like one of the POV characters, which is a shame because I wanted to. Still glad I read it and I like the world and most of the characters.
