The Captain of A Lady's Heart

Rate this book
Lady Katherine Ennis is a rebellious and unusual soul for her era, aching for freedom and adventure in her life instead of a conventional marital life. When she is forced by her dominating parents to marry a man she doesn't love, she desperately tries to escape from this doomed fate. Everything changes though the moment she is bravely saved by a dashing Captain after being in a horse accident. From that moment on, Katherine starts thinking that this gentleman could be the salvation she has been looking for and comes up with a deceptive plan of a staged marriage. However, as her pretense of love for the Captain soon turns into reality, could Katherine find the courage to admit the depth of her feelings? Or will her fear to reveal the truth, destroy a fulfilling future with her soulmate?

Captain Robert Barkley's freedom has been overshadowed by the debt that his deceased brother left in his wake, risking the future of his recently inherited dukedom. Even though marriage has never been something he yearned for, he knows it's the only way to save his Manor and preserve his legacy. When a marriage of convenience to a beautiful lady is suddenly on the cards, he thinks that his luck has finally changed for the better. Yet, in the course of time, he finds himself drawn to her ethereal beauty and captivated by her gracious personality. However, he has promised her freedom and knows that he cannot break his word, regardless of the pain that losing her would cause him. Will Robert succeed in claiming an untamed lady's heart? Could he ever manage to pay off the dreadful debt and take the leap of real love at the same time?

In a story of unspoken truths, Katherine and Robert realise they are unable to deny the pure love that has grown between them. However, the road to happiness is full of obstacles, with two domineering families insisting upon their own loveless wishes. Will Katherine and Robert face their fears and find a way to turn their two worlds into one, against all odds? Or will they crumble under the constant external pressure and lose their only chance at a magical romance?

"The Captain of A Lady's Heart" is a historical romance novel of approximately 60,000 words. No cheating, no cliffhangers, and a guaranteed happily ever after.

Lady Katherine Ennis is being forced to marry a man of her father’s choosing who although she does not dislike him she does not want to marry him. She tries everything she can to stop the engagement from moving forward because she does not have any affection for this man and then comes to realize that her sister is in love with him. She spends every waking minute trying to come up with a way to get out of this situation.

When Captain Robert Barkley saves her after a horse accident she finds herself drawn to him and fakes memory loss and names him as her finance. He finds that a marriage of convenience to Lady Catherine might solve his money problems and an agreement between them is made.

Let the games begin! There was many ups and downs in the evolution of the relationship between Lady Katherine and the Captain. So much of their problems could have been avoided if they just were honest with each other. At times, I wanted to scream at them to set their fears aside and just be honest with each other. I truly felt engaged with the characters and part of their story. I enjoyed this book and think you will too.

Enchanting!

I sort of stumbled across this book. I absolutely love it!

Katie is a dutiful daughter who is set to marry a man she does not love. She is out of options and will be required to learn to be a good wife.

You never know what you will see when you gaze out the window. Melinda, her sister is madly in love with the man she is set to marry. How can she break her sister's heart? What option does she have left?

Enter Robert, a man in a similar fix. He has debts to pay, a family to care for and a need of a good wife asap. What follows is a Regency prairie marriage with all of the glorious conundrums that come in tow.

Will their mutual situation blossom or will disgrace follow them the rest their days? What can possibly happen?

Tag! You're it! I loved and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Have fun!

I am volunteering an honest review for the benefit of others.

Such a sweet historical regency romance

When her parents arrange a marriage for her, Lady Catherine has other things in mind and so does fate. After getting in a bad accident she say by Captain Robert who she convinces to be in a fake marriage with him. Not only is it beneficial to her… Well not exactly a fake marriage… What do you have to read the book anyway it also benefits him. His brother has recently passed and he inherits a duke them so he needs a Lady Catherine the last thing he intends is the fall in love with her but does she feel the same? It is amazing to me how much I love the stories and I never get tired of them. I am so glad I found Miss Kirks and her books it opens up a whole new library for me and I can’t say enough about this one in particular I loved it and highly recommend it!

A fun, adventurous romance

This book is filled with strong, loving characters who are forced to deal with some dastardly ones. The story has a strong plot that is sprinkled with humor as well as fear. It's a fun read. Having said that, there are many typos and pre-edit marks that should have been handled in the first edit. The author would be well served to have a better proofreader. I received this book gratis in exchange for my honest opinion. This author has a lot of potential and I will happily read more of her work, especially if she employs more competent proofreaders.

I was very impressed.
This is a new author for me and I was very impressed with her book. Katherine Ennis is a rebel at heart yet she lived in a time that she belonged to and must do what her parents wished. Yet she found a chance to change her fate. Captain Robert Barkley for reasons of his own he agrees to Katherine's plan. Little did these two realize just what fate had in store for them. Some interesting twists that I enjoyed seeing these characters work through made for an entertaining read. I enjoyed the book and this is an author I am going to keep my eye on.

Another amazing triumph

This is another amazingly written story, that has a plot full of emotional turmoil and brilliantly crafted characters, who are portrayed with the strength and determination to achieve their happiness. The extended epilogue is as usual, used to bring their story's to a beautiful completion. This is a great book that will suit all those who love clean historical romances that is full of intrigue. I read an ARC copy.

Alice Kirks certainly gives us a new twist on a familiar story, father wants daughter married, daughter wants to marry for love, father decrees who she’s to marry. At that point, we get a few new twists. Enter Captain Robert Barkley who has recently ascended to the title of Duke of Winfield, an impoverished dukedom. This is almost a comedy/tragedy of errors or were they? I enjoyed this book and I didn’t have to spend a lot of time yelling at the characters.

Nice read

We have two people, Robert and Katherine, who get caught up in a situation created because her father is so determined to marry her off. The story really begins when she, accidentally figures on a way to get out of it. This then starts a series of events that lead to a lot of emotional involvement and difficulties until they finally find their sweet ending

Betrayed

Truly feel sorry for the young ladies of this era, traded for status for themselves, not caring for the feelings of their daughters. This story tells of trying to bring happiness to themselves not the parents! Very good read, only wish they had more courage and had spoke their feelings!

Captain

What a lovely storyline and read. Duty to country, duty to home and caught in a fabrication seems to be what destiny had in mind for Robert. The beautiful Lady Kathleen has plans for him, but will they backfire? Love for their siblings and self preservation throw them together. Will their plans be fulfilled? Lots of intrigue!

This is a delightful story with a strong, reasonable plot. Katherine and Robert are sweet, interesting characters. Unfortunately, this author badly needs a good editor. The many grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary errors really lower the quality of the book.

Caught ar Chapter 5

I gave this story 5 stars. I was hooked by the end of the fifth chapter. It just got better. The wandering ways of the plot kept me glued until the end. Ms. Kirks has a winner here.

amazing book

I really enjoyed Robert and Katherine and all the trials they went through to be together. I wanted to punch Lord Ennis for being so cold with his girls. I am happy that both daughters got the men they wanted.

intriguing story

Couldn’t put the book down. Cleverly written, perfectly explaining how women had no rights at this time in history. The developing love between the hero and heroine beautifully described and captured.
