'The Loch' by Dee Taylor is an atmospheric adventure thriller that is heavily laced with the 'myth' or even the 'legend' of the Loch Ness Monster and a treasure hunt to boot! It is an exciting read. We are introduced to Ex-stripper Tina and her deep-sea diver boyfriend Jack. They are camping on the edge of Loch Ness, the plan being to have a relaxing time before moving on to Cornwall and a dream cottage for them both. As they get settled in the tent and their surroundings, Jack goes fishing to catch their breakfast but they get more than they expected. They have a sighting of what they believe could be the Loch Ness monster. They decide to take a trip to the local Loch Ness monster museum, upon telling their tale they are taken to meet Red Angus, a man who has also seen Nessie. As they get to know one another Red tells them the tale of the missing Bonnie Prince Charlie gold. Treasure that was apparently lost after his defeat at Culloden. It is told that as he fled he passed the gold to a colleague to keep safe. The story is that the poor man transporting the treasure was shot and killed while fleeing across Loch Ness and he went overboard, treasure and all. Jack, Tina and Red have ideas of how to find it so make a pact to find it together. The plan goes a little awry as Tina finds herself attracted to Red. The question is can these three put personal feelings aside and manage to solve the mystery of the missing gold, or will the Loch defeat them? This is a book that had my attention as soon as I saw the cover. I fell in love with the colours used and knew I needed to discover this story for myself. I wouldn't allow myself to say no to reading this story. The myths and legends of the story are ones that everybody have heard about and obviously there are still people who attempt to catch a glimpse of Nessie. The three characters in 'The Loch' are all desperate people in one way or another and are searching for something. Something they can never find so they become almost addicted to the need to 'sight' Nessie or find the treasure. It becomes almost an obsession, something to focus on instead of their lacking lives. I found Tina's story the one I could understand the most. With her background of stripping and drinking becoming a problem. All she wants is to love and be loved for being her. She craves a quiet, safe life with someone who treats her as an equal and not just the stripper they picked up last night. The chapter in which she is faced with the two locals, brothers who are very unsavoury characters, she dealt with that amazingly well and shows me her inner core of strength. Red is a man of many layers and Dee Taylor has shown this throughout. His PTSD, his time being a mercenary and in the army. All the violence coming from this man who shows his tender side with Tina and when speaking about his family and childhood too. So real and such a damaged man. I felt for him as I read his story. The diving scenes wherein turn terrifying and tense. I am not a good swimmer and the thought of being so far underwater terrifies me! Dee Taylor played so well on my fears here. The descriptions of the Loch and the surrounding areas were crystal clear. I have never, ever been to Scotland but I feel like I was with them. A beautiful portrayal by a man of many talents. It is a story that interested me both with Nessie and the treasure hunt too!
The Loch by Dee Tayor is a trip into the mythical legend of the Loch Ness Monster. It was quite the imaginative and engaging novel. It was so easy for me to settle into reading this, and I ended up reading most of it the day I started.
Dee Taylor has created compelling charact we to. Tina, Jack, and Red Angus are intricately detailed with dark backgrounds. I found them intriguing, and the more I learned, the more I cheered for them.
It is easy to get drawn in the details of the this story. Towering mountains, moors, murky water…there was a feeling of dread that came on through this story. I really enjoyed how dangerous it really felt.
The Loch was thrilling and engaging. I didn’t want to put it down and I loved the characters. Highly recommended.

Pack your bags dear reader because we are going on a trip that will change everything you thought you believed about the mythical legend that is the Loch Ness Monster.
The story takes place in the Scottish Highlands mid summer of 1967. Told in third person we follow former Stripper Tina and her deep sea diver boyfriend Jack Armstrong as they escape to Loch Ness for a 3 week camping holiday. Their relationship lately has become frail and they hope that getting away together for a while will save it. They plan to travel to Cornwall after, get married and start a life together. However things don’t exactly go to plan and soon talks of monsters and gold begin to challenge just how much they are willing to risk.
Taylor has created some interesting characters with dark, disturbing backgrounds. The three main characters Tina, Jack and Red Angus have all had their fair share of pain. The more you learn about them, the more you wish them to succeed.
Tina is reminded frequently of her past life, the men she slept with and how she would drink to block out the memories. She is used to being pestered and pursued by every kind of riff-raff and dirty old man while she was working in Aberdeen. She hated the thought of ending up like so many other strippers trapped in that way of life which would eventually lead to prostitution. She had to stop drinking as it began to have an effect on her mind, struggling to sort out truth from fiction in her everyday life. She dreamed of settling down with the right sort of man. When Jack told her his feelings she grabbed at the chance. He was her way out, her escape but was unsure if she really loved him. She feels conflicted as she starts to have feelings towards Red Angus and starts to question everything.
Jack has been diving professionally for 10 years and dreams of settling down far away from the North Sea and its oil boom. He wants to settle in Cornwall with Tina and start up a small freelance diving business. He gets jealous about her past and the amount of men she’s slept with but pushes it to the back of his mind. His hopes and dreams of a happy married life drastically change when he and Tina witness something unnatural while fishing on Loch Ness. With a new sudden desire to learn more and possibly catch the monster Jack wishes to stay, which leads them both down a dangerous path that changes everything for the couple.
Red Angus is a striking character that towers over you from the moment you meet him. A gentle giant when happy he can become dangerous when angered or drunk. He has lived by the Loch for seven years camping on the bank, surviving on fishing, hunting and growing his own vegetables. He is the best expert on the Loch Ness phenomenon and has his own theories on the creature. He has a secret past with whispers of once having a family and drinks to forget. Upon meeting Jack and Tina it becomes clear that it’s not just the Loch that will get between the unsuspecting couple.
Taylor surrounds the reader with the towering mountains, high moors and the Loch. The depths of the murky water are never-ending as you feel a sense of foreshadowing doom the further you dive into this tale. The sheer size of Loch Ness is enormous, giving off a feeling of isolation and danger. I found that Taylor took an intelligent approach to including the Loch as its own entity, showing the reader that the Loch has many moods and that you have to learn to know them. There were scenes when the sun would be shining on its mirrored surface and the smell of delicious outdoor cooking filled the air. Then it would drastically change to the dead of night when the cold and darkness would surround you, sending shivers down your spine. Figures crept about and watched the characters from the shadows. It was a drastic change and one that kept you in suspense. Fantastic writing!
I give The Loch By Dee Taylor a Five out of Five paw rating.
You will be left gasping for air, scared for your life and wondering just what does live in the famous Loch Ness?
There are many, many heart stopping moments throughout this book. Moments when you are terrified for all three characters, willing them to fight, survive and find what they are all so desperately looking for. It’s an intense, chilling read that will keep you hooked from start to finish. You may also find yourself tempted to do your own little bit of digging and discover the mysteries of the Loch Ness Monster and Charlie’s Gold.
The Loch revolves around a group of people who have dedicated themselves to searching out the famous Scottish Nessie. Set in the late 60’s Anderson a pro diver and his girlfriend Tina go camping around the Loch and see the ‘fabled’ monster - this sighting had them hooked and they join the hunt to get photographic proof. Meeting with Red Angus and Jimmy Bell they also hear of a lost treasure of Bonnie Prince Charlie and decide to search for the gold too. It gets interesting when they dive deep in the loch and get more sightings than they were bargaining for while attracting the attention of other treasure hunters on the way. Greed and bully tactics get in the way meaning tactics have to be made. As an Aberdonian I have a love of all things Nessie and jumped at the chance to read this book. Overall an enjoyable read about mystery and treachery and of course Nessie. At only 215 pages a very quick read.
The Loch revolves around a group of people that have dedicated themselves to the mysterious legend surrounding the Loch Ness monster.
Tina, former stripper, was camping with her new boyfriend by the Loch Ness river when they had an incredible sighting of the monster. Jack becomes soon obsessed in finding out about the monster and driven by the desire of proving his existence taking a close up picture of it. But soon the interest in the monster fades, as they actually realise they could be successful in a treasure hunt.
This is definitely not a thriller I would normally read, but I quite enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down. I particularly enjoyed reading more about Nessie’s legend and the Prince Charlie’s Jacobite gold story. The plot is full of intrigue, suspense and tension, and even if there isn’t a huge twist in the story I had chills going down my spine, I definitely won’t be able to look at the Loch Ness and Great Glen in the same way.
I love anything to do with the Loch Ness monster 🦕🦕🦕 so when I saw this in my emails, I jumped at it!
That artwork is so pleasing to the eye 🤩
Now, the story!.... well, this was an unexpected tragic love story! I did not expect saucy love scenes, and in contrast - uncomfortable degrading sexual scenes, in this book!
But I did enjoy it, and these scenes added to the surprising atmosphere surrounding the characters.
Tina is the star of the show in my opinion, shes a great character! But the way she is treated is horrible 😮.
So a team of misfits enter an exciting journey to discover the truth about Nessie 🦕 but become obsessed with some rumoured treasure, that will end up in chaos and tragedy for all involved.
What happens when you search for something that nobody else has yet found? In this case you’re not disappointed! You get far more than you bargained for.
This novel starts off with a sense of tension, but it loses none of its pace as we find out why paradise isn’t always all it’s cracked up to be.
There’s a little bit of everything in this book and it hauls you right in and keeps you there. If you love all things highland and Nessie with danger and romance you will love this book. And the cover art, not something I’d normally mention is breathtaking!
