Full of case studies and interviews with senior HR professionals, this book seeks to shine a light on modern HR.
Of course HR is becoming a dated term, but whether you look at it as organisational development, people and culture, or components such as learning and development, the purpose is still the same. People are the heart of an organisation's unique selling proposition and success and need focus.

I would recommend this book to those new to, or wanting to consider, HR as a career. Also for those who are in a HR role which is not adding value and they need some inspiration on what is possible.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

I started on this book knowing one thing for certain; I was not the target audience for its message. However, now that I have read it, I realize that the important learnings contained herein are not confined to those working in people ops!

The book does a nice job of framing the issues (the issues that are everchanging) that affect most workers while providing an effective guide of best practices for those responsible for implementing policies that affect the quality of the modern-day workforce. It provides easy to comprehend examples and mixes them with the poignancy that is unique to the talented author.

I wasn't expecting a story but was pleasantly surprised to find myself flipping through the pages with ease. What I have learned from reading this book will make me a better teammate and a more effective communicator. Definitely recommend.

I have a lot of highlights in this book and may buy a hard copy of it for my office. I do think this is worth a read, not in the sense that it provides anything new I can't get from the SHRM website as far as HR Knowledge, but because each chapter has case studies and notes from experiences professionals in the field. I would have almost preferred this book was only case studies, because I love to hear what other people in the field are doing or have done.

3 stars because the book felt a little redundant and surface level outside of the case studies, but overall a good and concise read for any HR professional.

Bought as wider reading for CIPD, and I think this book is definitely not the right place to be looking for that. Very thought provoking regardless; I'd be interested in working in an environment which is as progressive as Schmidt describes, but I feel in my heart I'm probably a little more trad than he's encouraging readers to be.

For CIPD usage, some good things to quote on company culture, and employee experience. Lots of case studies to call upon, but you're not going to find your theories to quote in here.

This book was recommended by my career coach, I thought it was okay. For me I had a hard time reading/finishing it but I trucked through.
There were some great tips, that I took away; however it wasn’t the best that I have ever read.

Good book for "bringing you up to speed on the change from old-school HR to modern HR" or something like that. It kinda made me want to get into HR, but it also kinda led to a lot of thoughts from a non-HR person (me) on how to do better than that.
