Outside the city of Boston, Elene waits at Black Hollow, watching her world pass her by. She was told she would never be able to leave and her family would stay whole. Things shift after her sister, Poppy, mentions a woman in the woods. Following her appearance, Elene's entire world crumbles as specters plague her life. The past and future haunt her, showing the echos of history barreling down the halls. Though, she is not alone. Poppy discovers the heart of Black Hollow and learns the darkest secret about her home. Pulling herself from the horrors of the past, she finds herself in the arms of James whilst her eye is set on Thomas. Trying to forget, history catches up once more and repeats.

Myria Candies is taking us back to Black Hollow in this prequel to her debut novel. We are once again introduced to the characters from the first book. But this time, the author takes us deep into their past and psyche where we learn the disturbing details that haunt them. It was beautifully written and you won’t want to put this book down. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time wondering what would happen once I turned the page. Well done!
*TW* This book contains details of abuse, the effects of abuse, murder, blood, etc. This book is in no way suitable for sensitive readers.
White Embers is the sequel to Black Hollow but it would be advised you read Black Hollow first in order to understand what takes place here.
White Embers is craftily written and contains twists and some shocking turn of events. Through this book, we get to understand the characters more and get a better understanding of why they act the way they did/still do.
The characters have all been through a trauma of their own, a trauma that affects their future. History just seems to repeat itself over and over again in a never ending cycle.
Poppy's character and her mother's character were the main two I was interested in as we didn't know too much about them in Black Hollow so I definitely loved learning more about both of them. Even though quite a lot of it was shocking to learn!
Myria Candies has written this book so that readers fly through it with ease. The writing is lyrical, almost poetic like, but yet, it is still chilling.
I definitely enjoyed this book and am so glad to have had the pleasure of beta-reading it. (All opinions are my own and in no way am I biased.) I do feel though that Black Hollow was better than this book but I still enjoyed the thrill and tense-ness of diving back into a story with these characters. I just feel that with this book, there wasn't as much tension as there was in Black Hollow due to the fact that we already knew what to expect. Even still, I enjoyed the plot of this book and will admit that I was still shocked about a good few scenes.
I mean, I did after all read this book in one night.. whoops.
I definitely recommend this book to the fans of Black Hollow and to my mystery and suspense readers. You're in for a murderous rollercoaster!
I just want to say wow!! The way she continued after Black hollow is better. I think I enjoy both books very much, however, I must say that this book took the prize. It is nice to see another side of the story and if you have previously read Black hollow you will get your answers. I really love this book and it is a book i recommend. I love it. The suspense, the twist and turns. It did bring some tears but it was well worth. I think I am lost of words for this book but it is a very interesting story. The development and how the story is written was amazingly. The author thought clearly of the development of the stories in this book and was able to give the final ending. I enjoyed it. So, if you enjoy mystery, suspense, hauntings, then try out this book. You won't be disappointed.
White Embers is a masterpiece of a book. I couldn't stop reading it. It's rich with detail and incredibly compelling —especially when it comes to the struggles Elene and Poppy both endure as their respective journeys mold and change them in opposing ways. I particularly love how the author delves into their psyches and mindsets, illustrating the different ways they see and approach the world at large. The story is full of unexpected twists and turns that left me stunned to the core. History haunts both Elwne and her family, as do the choices she makes. Where she ends up is something you'll have to find out for yourself when you read this book.
White Embers, by Myria Candies, is a tale of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very last page! This story dives into the backstory of the characters we were introduced to in Candies’ debut novel, Black Hollow. I loved learning the back story of these characters and diving more into the secrets of the manor. This gripping story will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you love horror and plot twists, this is the story for you!
What can I say about this book that hasn't beens mentioned in my other reviews of Myria's books. Once again another amazing story as the tragedy of Black Hollow continues, this time from a new prospective. Readers of Black Hollow return to the Manor in yet another tragic story of murder and betrayal full of interesting characters at the heart of which rests a past that cannot be forgotten.
*I changed my mind and upped my rating from four stars to five!*
Prequels aren’t my favorite thing, but the world of Black Hollow and the characters within are so well written and intriguing that I actually didn’t mind that in this case. The characters are morally gray, ones that you become invested in but can’t root for. Who’s good? Who’s bad? You can never truly know until their true colors are revealed. Honestly, I enjoyed that. It was great revisiting this world, seeing how things began, and learning more of the history within. This book was a little slow to start, but once I got about a quarter in, it thoroughly captured my attention, probably even more than the first book. It was intense, with violence, murder, blood, creepy imagery. There are also a lot of romantic predicaments, including abuse, affairs, and partners in crime for lack of a better term. The author brilliantly adds plot twists that shock me at every turn. Even things we find out in Black Hollow stunned me all over again because it had been so long since I read it. The horror gave me the creeps and the suspense and mystery left me eagerly turning the pages. I think I even held my breath at a few points. Now I want to read Black Hollow again soon!
🤩 An amazing, horrifying, and thrilling read! The tension between Elene and Poppy in the past was far greater than I had expected after reading Black Hollow. Marcus gives me nightmares, and now, I’m along for Myria Candies nightmare ride.
She’s done an excellent job at fitting pieces of the puzzle together as well as creating new ones. Another absolutely gripping read from Candies! More, more, I want more!!
