I have not read any self – help books before, this one being the first I ever read was an informative read. This book is divided into four parts or steps.

Step 1 – Find Your Ambition
Step 2 – Supercharge your learning
Step 3 – prioritize your well being
Step 4 – Strengthen Your Resolve

My thoughts:
• This book came to me when I was in a desperate need of inspiration and this book gave me that ray of inspiration.
• The writing is very approachable and fluid. I felt the sentences flowed very spontaneously and hence it was a fairly quick read.
• This book helped me to learn my shortcomings, pinpoint them, and amend them. This book made me realize how harshly I used to treat myself. I realized I needed to change that and I am more lenient to myself now after reading this book.
• This book is well researched and contains information from diverse sources.

Overall, this book was very informative and helpful to me and I believe it will be to other people as well. I enjoyed my time reading it and would highly recommend this book.

Summary: Executive success coach and social scientist Amanda Dewinter distills 4 bold steps to find your ambition and achieve your goals.

Amanda Dewinter’s book The Success Code: 4 bold steps to find your ambition and achieve your goals (HQ, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, 2021) isn’t a groundbreaking work; however, if you’re looking to touch-basing your success plan, then it should be your go-to book. It is foregrounded in simple and everyday ideas to achieving continued success in life.

Amanda believes, and rightly so, that “we are most able to give to others: our family, friends, community and wider society” when we are successful. And as any life coach would argue, she also believes that there are plentiful opportunities, but inquires “why don’t we take them?” Though this simplistic correlation between opportunities and the inability of people to grab them might upset many, including me, but Amanda does offer three generalized reasons for the same:

1. We know what’s right for us, but we don’t start working on it.
2. We have been putting off learning.
3. We live busy lives.

And for people, with tools and strategy in place, unable to chart their success path, Amanda distills the ‘success code’ in 4 simple steps (see Figure 1).

Figure 1. 4 Simple Steps to Find Your Ambition and Achieve Your Goals

Step One: Find Your Ambition
Amanda ridicules the born-talented myth. Instead, she believes that talent can be cultivated. But first, one must clearly define what they want.

It can be as simple as asking yourself “What does ‘good’ look like?” A decent way to inquire what would ‘success’ look like or to put it simply: “How would you define ‘success’?” For an organization, that can be a mission statement.

Google’s mission statement: To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

To identify your ambition or goal, she wants you to “first select your driving change” by asking these simple questions:
1. Do you feel stuck?
2. Are you too busy, stressed, overwhelmed?
3. Do you want to find new ways of doing things?

From there on, visualize your strengths and weaknesses by carrying out a simple SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat) analysis, then create a “concrete image of your vision” by creating a vision board. To do that, you may take all your “ideas and narrow them down to the ones that really resonate,” so that everything on your vision board energizes, motivates, and inspires you. But you should place it where you can see it often so that your mission gets embedded in your subconscious mind.

Until and unless such clear expectation setting or goal-setting is done, you won’t have a clear pathway to achieve success.

“In an academic setting,” she says “there is evidence that students’ grades can improve as much as 30 per cent when clear, specific goals are set.” (Source: ‘Setting, elaborating, and reflecting on personal goals improves academic performance.’ Journal of Applied Psychology.)

Goal-setting must be done tactfully by employing the SMART technique, according to which goals should be Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, and Time Specific. But sometimes we may end up finalizing a wrong goal or may fail to achieve it. To avoid disappointments arising due to them, she wants you to develop a growth mindset perspective, a rebooting of sorts of your ‘mindset’ (see Figure 2).

Figure 2. Rebooting Mindset Helps in Attaining Success

In the event of failure, Amanda says that “First you need to be convinced that change is possible then changing your mindset requires you to have an alternative perspective and to adopt a new way of thinking,” and that mindset intervention requires:
1. Learning the new viewpoint
2. Carrying out an exercise that encourages you to adopt and apply the new mindset
3. Giving you the opportunity to share the idea with others

But what should you learn? Or perhaps: Why should one learn?

Step Two Supercharge Your Learning
Professor Anders Ericsson’s study, cited in Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, too, reveals that a talented person devotes serious commitment and time to practice their craft. Conducted on violinists, the experiment came to popularize an ubiquitous figure 10,000 — to master something, one needs to devote 10, 000 hours of practice; however, no such number should be attached to a dedicated practice. The key takeaway from this experiment is that one can possibly achieve anything through practice. Resilience is really the key to attaining success.

Because sometimes even a dogged determination can backfire as well, so one must “explore the idea of neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to form, reorganize and grow, especially in response to learning or new experiences.”

Learning gives you purpose and makes you happier: The meaning of life differs from man to man, from day to day and from hour to hour. What matters, therefore, is not the meaning of life in general but rather the specific meaning of a person’s life at a given moment. — Viktor Frankl

Before coming to the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of learning, you must discover your ‘why’ of learning by asking yourself the following questions:
- What is your motivation and intention for learning
- Do you want to learn something completely new or build on something you already know?
- What do you love doing?
- What does the world need?
- What do you or could you get paid for?
- What type of learning would you like to do?
- What mode of learning would you like?
- Where do you want to learn?
- How do you choose between course providers?
- What practicalities do you need to consider?
- How will you finance it?

Answers to these questions can help you guide through the method of learning. Follow that by focusing on three steps of the learning process rigorously to excel in what you want to learn: focus your attention; work on it; and move it to your long-term memory to avoid cognitive load. Make quizzes or flashcards or summarize a text to keep things afresh. Even the age-old method of group learning can be helpful, too.

Step Three Prioritize Your Wellbeing
What can actually take a toll and become a hindrance in achieving success is personal wellbeing. In a helpful manner, Amanda guides the reader through various ways in which stress can add to the roadblocks rather than helping in achieving success. As she puts it: “Use Stress for Success.”

She shares an interesting finding, in a survey, 79% of the respondents say “that not having enough work is more stressful than having too much work. In fact, 74 per cent would rather take on more work if paid more rather than cut back and be paid less.” This is true in particular during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of making stress toxic, in challenging times, one should work toward making it tolerable or at least leverage it to succeed.

One must also follow a regular diet, followed by ample sleep. Continual refreshing and recharging of your body form the core of personal wellbeing.

The sewing machine was invented by Elias Howe in 1846. He had been stuck, trying to work out how to automate the sewing process, when the solution came to him in a dream. The same is true of the Periodic Table. Dmitri Mendeleev, a renowned Russian chemist, was attempting to classify the 56 known elements when the solution fell into place in a dream. On waking, he immediately wrote it down on a piece of paper.

Step Four Strengthen Your Resolve
In this section of the book, Amanda describes how “Learning is a System 2 activity – it’s cognitive effort, it’s deliberate thinking, it’s reasoning and analysis, it’s working out difficult problems. Exerting self-control and using willpower is also a System 2 activity – it requires effort and deliberate thinking. So, both learning and self-control are forms of mental work.”

She emphasizes the importance of focusing and zeroing in on activities rather than multitasking. One should eliminate distractions and create the right environment to work toward their goals. And timely breaks, planning, and revisiting your plans can be tremendously rewarding. However, one of the best takeaways from this book, for me, is to nurture relationships, as Christopher McCandless’ cinematic characterization in the movie Into the Wild reveals: “Happiness is only real when shared.”

If achieving success makes you happy, ensure you have enough people to share this happiness with others. Else your achievements remain meaningless.

And this self help novel serves the purpose willfully.

This book is divided into four parts -

4. Strengthen your resolve

The cover is simple yet elegant and the title is apt for the book.

The writing style of the author is effortless and approachable. It is quite fast-paced, so it was easy for me to finish the book quickly.

One thing I loved about this book is the author has emphasized that how our mindset, willpower, optimism, stress level plays a huge role in achieving our dreams.

Also, I usually do not read any self-help books, but this book was very inspiring and helpful to me. If you like to read self-help

If I was still in college/university or 22 and working for an accounting firm with my sights on becoming a partner, I would probably read this book.

I had gotten about 3/4 of the way through when I was considering not finishing it.

Being the stubborn, determined person that I am, I finished it.

I am glad I did as chapters 9-10 were really worth my time. Everything else was things I had learned from other books, so I didn't feel as though I learned anything new.

It reads more like a textbook and gave me some residual PTSD from my corporate job. However, if I was still in that position, this book might have helped ease the pain I endured daily.

I will admit I did have high hopes for this one as I was kind of excited it was written by a female author.

The book "The Success Code" is an informative guide that provides some wonderful tips that will help you achieve your ambitions. Everyone wishes to be successful in life and therefore it's really important to embrace challenges and grab hold of opportunities. Even though luck plays a role in success, we must realize that there are some other important determining factors like hard work and learning.

It's really important to have an ambition in life and work for it. Success can be achieved using a strategic plan and the author has mentioned everything that must be done and kept in mind during the journey towards success. According to the author, no one is born with extraordinary talent and therefore talent is something that should be cultivated. Also, it's really important to step out of our comfort zones to achieve our dreams.

The author has clearly mentioned the importance of mindset, stress control, exercise, optimism, willpower etc in achieving our dreams. Some effective tools like SWOT analysis, memorizing techniques, etc that will help in the race in achieving dreams have also been provided. Overall it was a very interesting read and I would recommend this book to those who need some motivation and guidance in achieving their dreams.

I hardly read Non Fiction/ Self Help books, but this was pretty interesting and informative for me.

As the subtitle says, 4 Bold Steps to find your ambition and achieve your goals, the book is divided into four parts or steps in order to be more closer to your ambition.

The writing seems effortless but the efficacy is evident. Things are explained in a brief but clear manner, the author tells you the importance of letting go of the fear after one set back, or fear of failure,  and keeping a track of your mental well being first.

The author asks us to always learn new things, educate ourselves, to enjoy success and not be afraid of jinxing it, always set aside personal time or take breaks, find a balance between personal and professional life, avoid multitasking and racking our brain with unnecessary stress and believe in willpower.

These steps are pretty powerful and helpful when it comes to setting smart goals for yourself and following your ambition.

If you're afraid of not being productive enough, not able to find measures or find the confidence in yourself to do things, holding yourself back from the things that are good for you, and need a push to make your life better, I would recommend this to you.

Great read by @amandadewinter_
The more I read about similar topics, the more it’s clear that there is no escaping from doing certain things, changing certain habits, rewiring your thinking and just putting a lot of work and conscious planning...if you want to get anything done in life.
Some might say “well, you didn’t need to read a book to find that one out”...but you would be surprised how helpful it actually is.
What I loved the most about this book it’s the emphasis put onto learning. And how it reminds you that there are endless possibilities and opportunities out there, if only you are ready to open your eyes.
I recommend this book to those who need a push of confidence, who need a boost to keep trying or start anew, you needs to be reminded that we are capable to do whatever we put our mind to.

The Success Code is an easy to read self-help book that focuses on all the basics of living better and working more efficiently to achieve your dreams. It is divided into four sections, which are namely as follows: finding your ambition, supercharging your learning, prioritising your wellbeing and strengthening your resolve. If you're looking for practical tools to kickstart your life or take things to the next level, The Success Code has all the fundamentals down.

I really found myself pondering deeply about some of the sections. The most important one to me was the chapter covering the reality of stress: it really got me thinking about my relationship with it and has pushed me to see it in a more positive way. Among many other valid advice, I also really loved the conversation about how fear can become a companion in our life journey. We need not fear fear. It helps us more than we know.

"Each and every one of us deserves success. Each and every one of us is capable of achieving it. All you need is the code."

Although there's a lot of self-help books out there, I personally benefitted from this book as it gave me a lot of flexibility in re-assessing my life. The code can mean different things for different people, and this book is an amazing starting point to explore what works for us. I found myself following some of the mentioned activities, and just getting started on them has given me some momentum to work better. This book has given me hope - whatever happens, I can handle it!

So if you're looking for a simple, no b.s guide to success, I think this one does a great job of giving us deceivingly simple advice that becomes intuitive once we really think about it. Keep in mind that it does not go too much in depth, but rather only tells us enough to apply it confidently to our own lives. That worked perfectly for me.

So, what are you waiting for? Let's crack the success code!

I thank @harpercollinsin for this opportunity to review 💞

A good introduction to personal growth & wellbeing content. Draws on - and summarises - much of the current popular thinking around the 4 areas covered - goal design, learning, wellbeing, habits & behaviours.

Good for the uninitiated or to skim through and get the gist. But for those who have previously dipped their toe in these personal growth waters, there is unlikely to be any new or ground breaking ideas.

Having said that, I enjoy finding a different way of framing and approaching these topics, and in this case I found a few more self-reflection questions (journaling prompts) to ponder.
