This hilariously funny picture book is basically a conversation between a young frog, who is excited for winter and a wise old owl, who is trying to explain to him that he doesn't get to enjoy winter because he has to go hibernate in the mud. This would be a great read aloud especially if you're good with voices!
Frog is excited for all the upcoming winter activities. Until Owl informs him that frogs hibernate for the winter. Frog tries to come up with ways to avoid missing winter, but there always seems to be an issue. His friends try to make him feel better about hibernating, but there's only one way this frog will take such a long nap.
This was hands down my favorite of these I Don't Want To books. It was a great twist on the normal I don't want to go to bed book, and it actually provides a fair amount of scientific information about frog's anatomy and hibernation. And it was funny. Highly recommended to frog lovers, hibernation studiers, funny story fans, and those looking for an entertaining read.
Well, if you are trying to teach your toddler that napping and sleeping are fun, this isn't the book for that! While cute and you get to learn about how frogs hibernate, it didn't have the desired effect for us ;)

Frog does not want to go to sleep for the winter. He wants to go ice skating, take naps by the fire and play. However, as Owl nicely explains, frogs freeze in the cold temperatures. Frog convinces all of his friends to burrow in the mud with him so he can go to sleep.
This is a cute story about not wanting to hibernate. I was very interested to learn that frogs burrow into the mud to sleep out the cold weather, but when I researched a little further I think this book has a faulty explanation. The explanation in the book says that frogs sink to the bottom of ponds and burrow into the mud, but the internet explains that they only burrow into the mud, or if they are aquatic they only sleep at the bottom of ponds. They don’t do both. Anyway, that made the book optional for me. The illustrations are bright and attractive and I think kids will want to pick this book up.
From the creative team responsible for three other humorous frog picture books comes this one, sure to be a hit with previous fans while attracting new ones. After hearing about the wonders of winter from his friend, Pig, Frog is eager to experience all its delights. But Owl takes great delight in explaining why this isn't possible. After all, frogs hibernate in the cold season. Poor Frog is horrified, and his friends do their best to downplay winter's delights, eventually joining him in the mud while they count down how long it is to spring. At least now, Frog won't have to sleep alone. This is a perfect read aloud for sharing right before bedtime. While it is humorous, it also teaches youngsters a little bit about the seasons and the hibernation process. The images are colorful and filled with expression, especially since the artist has chosen to enlarge one or two particular parts of Frog to showcase his reactions to advantage. Who knows what Frog will get up to next, but I know that I'll be along for the journey. No matter what you think about the book, it gives a whole new meaning to not wanting to go to sleep.
Funny, and fun to read. Little frog doesn't like the idea that it has to sleep through the winter. But as owl explains, that's what frogs, and bears, do. Frog of course cries out at the unfairness of this, that other animals get to stay awake and enjoy the season. As other creatures are drawn into the conversation, the owl and them dispel some of the frog's idealistic views of their lives. Bold, cartoony expressions, which really sell the humour, and the dialogue in their word balloons, make this a great readaloud. Eventually the frog accepts its fate, but children will likely be too busy laughing to get much themselves.
I loved the other two books in this series, but this one fell well short.
Young frog is excited for winter but Owl tells him he has to hibernate for the cold season and informs him that his father has been hibernating for quite awhile now. What child wouldn't notice that their parent is missing?
It goes on to discuss how a frog hibernates, how the other animals deal with winter. In the end Frog asks Pig, Rabbit, Owl and Cat to hibernate, in the mud, with him.
I love the illustrations as usual but the story is stupid.
Frog doesn’t want to miss winter. Pig told him all about the snow and how fun it is. So why is owl insisting that Frog has to hibernate? Sink to the bottom of a pond and cover himself in mud? Who does that? What? Dad does? His friends try to convince him that winter isn’t all that fun anyway. He’s not buying it, but there is something they can do to make him feel better.
I love this series. They make great reader’s theater, too.
This is just funny and cute. The 5-year-old and the 3-year-old agree. Frog is a bit of a drama queen. Fortunately the wise owl is there to teach him the ways of the world. And there's bunny, cat, and pig: good friends who are truly there for him no matter what! Lots of unexpected funny moments. Entertaining illustrations painted in rich colors. And now I finally know where frogs go in the winter.
I used this book for a preschool storytime with the theme of hibernation. There are a few things in the book that get a chuckle from the parents but which go over the kids' heads, and I think that is fine, and even a little fun. I also like the way it takes the time to explain how frogs hibernate. There is also the generosity of Frog's friends, wading into the mud with him, so all around, I like this book.
Are you ready to leap into more laughter? A frog who never fails to entertain (I Don't Want To Be A Frog, I Don't Want To Be Big and There's Nothing To Do!) is back. In this book, I Don't Want To Go To Sleep (Doubleday Books For Young Readers, October 16, 2018) written by Dev Petty with illustrations by Mike Boldt, Frog refuses to do what frogs do in winter.
A twist on the classic childhood issue of not wanting to go to bed.
Frog is excited about autumn and the coming of winter. But when Owl informs him that frogs hibernate till spring, Frog is upset at missing out on all the snowy fun. Frog comes up with all kinds of reasons why he's not going to sleep through winter.
Frog is funny and precious and FUNNY! I thought this book was about bedtime, but it's got a bit of a science lesson cleverly mixed in. I bet young readers will smile and chuckle all the way through - like I just did.
Dev Petty and Mike Boldt are masters, and young readers will love this book (roughly pre-K through 2nd), depending on if it's read aloud to, with, or by the young reader.
This time Frog does not want to go to sleep and miss winter. He wants to stay up and experience everything his friends do. The wise owl explains what would happen to a frog in the warmth or cold. Petty slips science in this book seamlessly.
Dev Petty's frog is back and fighting the need to hibernate during the winter. Talking bubbles tell the story as friends try to convince the frog. A good book to set up for multiple voices. Young readers will like this series.
Frog doesn't want to sleep this winter, and learned his dad is already in hibernation. Frog comes up with ideas of what he'll do instead. His friends try to explain how winter is not for frogs. Funny story and illustrations.
Frog is off on another adorable adventures. Wanting to play with his friend's all winter frog resists hibernating. He just doesn't want to miss out on all the fun with his friends. Kids will love Frog's reaction and response to his dilemma.
Super cute book - when Frog finds out he has to hibernate all winter instead of playing in the snow or keeping warm by the fireplace, he's....not happy. But Owl is there to explain everything! I laughed, plus I learned where frogs go during the winter!
Frog doesn't want to sleep for the winter. He asks the wise owl why he has to. He tries to be like the other animals. In the end, they all try to convince him, but really the most convincing things is to join him! Cute.
Love the illustration of the frog especially. Owl tells Frog about hibernating in the winter. Frog wants to be like pig in a warm plaid blanket, he wants to be like cat curled up in front of a fire. Owl keeps telling him why he can't do those things. Frog's friends burrow in the mud with him.
Very cute book about sleep from the perspective of a frog who wants to stay awake to experience winter and tries to convince the other animals that he will stay awake even though they try to explain to him why he will need to hibernate through the whole winter.
"I Don't Want to Go to Sleep" is a great book for children who take a while to settle down at bedtime. It introduces a wide variety of animals as characters. It would be great to pair this book with a lesson on hibernation!
This is the first book in the series that I actually enjoyed. And it was fun to read about frogs hibernating; you don't get to do that everyday (it's usually bears bears bears).
