This book starts out well enough but sometime around the middle I started to lose interest and read a few books in between coming back to this one. I think it's character driven rather than plot driven, which means we spend a lot of time in the main character's head and her struggles. There is some action in each chapter but it isn't enough to be "scary" but more fantastical. I'm not finished with the book and it may take me awhile to get completely through it, but I wanted to review it nonetheless.
I thought this book had some likeable aspects and a good idea, but the execution felt a little unsatisfactory. I felt like the moments that were supposed to be impactful or clever weren't really that impactful or clever, and there was unnecessary dialogue but too little action. Not a bad read, though! I would say 3.5/5
This book was okay. I enjoyed the first half a bit more than the second. It drags a little. I found myself waiting for it to end so I could read something else.
3.5 stars. It starts so good... there was so much in the first half of the book that was very creepy and unsettling and spooky that one would want when reading in the horror genre. The setting and the descriptions in the first half were absolutely 5 stars, and if it ended about halfway through the book, I would have given it an easy 5 star rating. Halfway in, a really climactic event happens and from that point on, the book is a bit of a let-down, imo. It just gets really slow, and drags on, and goes more into a fantastical world and completely out of the horror realm. Super unfortunate considering how the book starts.
This is only my second suspense/thriller read; I don't think I've ever been engaged with the genre. This book is like a really, really good scary movie. And, honestly, it was so anxiety producing that half way through I had to stop reading. I recommend it if you like this genre (and don't get anxious ever, lol).
I had a little trouble identifying with the adult characters in this, the husband seemed weak to me and the wife confused. Their lack of knowledge on so many levels of life had me shaking my head. And the story ending left a bit to desire. Family just accepted the story of husband’s demise? And of course the ending was leading to the next installment.

I suspected the little girl was going to be "possesed/connected" in the first few chapters, but wished for a different way to get there. I found myself skimming through Orla's lengthy monologs, as I felt they added little to the overall plot.
