Royal Connections #1

The Other Prince

Rate this book
For fans of Sophie Kinsella and Bridget Jones's Diary comes a laugh-out-loud, feel-good romantic comedy about love, friendship and tiaras.

After moving to London, Amelia Glendale landed her dream job as a lawyer at the Queen’s Charitable Foundation. But when the queen dies, Amelia finds herself working for her longtime royal crush, Prince Leo - and his stuffy older brother Prince Edmund.

Charismatic Prince Leo was once known for his hard-partying ways, but has settled down and thrown himself into a life of philanthropy. He's Amelia's perfect man and she's sure they'd get along if she wasn't too star-struck to speak to him.

Prince Edmund has always been the sensible brother and dutiful heir, until a scandal of epic proportions leaves his reputation in tatters. With his comfortable existence disrupted, he sees a chance to build a life and relationship where he is more than just his position.

Thrown into the princes' orbit, Amelia discovers that maybe the perfect man for her isn't the prince she expected. Will Amelia get her fairytale ending, or will the pressures of life in the spotlight be too much to bear?

Hi! I'm Alice. I'm so glad you're here.

I write funny stories about people falling in love. Mainly princes and princesses because I'm a bit of a royal family tragic. Also because writing about royalty is the closest I'll ever come to wearing a tiara that isn't made of plastic.

I live in Australia with my husband and three small humans. In my seventeen seconds of free time each day I love reading romantic comedies, watching cheesy Netflix movies and baking cakes which I absolutely do not eat most of myself.

I struggled with this predictable fairytale romance.

Amelia is a big fan of the royal family, in particular Prince Leo. So when she finally meets him she’s gutted to discover that he’s not the nice guy/philanthropist the media portray him as. His brother Edmund on the other hand . . .

It’s billed as a romantic comedy, but was a little short on comedy. It started well, but ended up turning over the same issues again and again. It was hard to have much empathy with the characters because the way it was written kept the reader at a distance. Also, there were some things that felt like a stretch.

I haven't in a very VERY long time skimmed through the pages in a book just to finish it and add it to my book challenge list. MAN... it's um... kind of disappointing.

Okay, here's the thing: if you love the British royal family and have forever and ever loved William and Harry and fantasized about ending up with one of them, this one's for you. If not, especially since they're both married, way older than you, find it super unthinkable to imagine when the queen will die (especially since Prince Phillip has just passed, RIP) it's just weird. I can't really put my finger as to why it's weird but it is.

The main character- no joke, halfway through the story I forgot her name- was a bit annoying to be honest... what do we know of her? She moved to London from Australia a couple years ago to work so she's a bit of a workaholic, she likes awful reality TV, she's "quirky" in that "clumsy-trying-too-hard-to-be-adorkable" kind of way, she's had a thing for Prince Harry- sorry, Prince Leo, since forever and well... yeah. She misses her family, she's best friends with somewhat of a demeaning version of a "no strings attached" kind of girl- who by the way, we never learn anything about her anyway aside from having a new man in her life every week and being extremely obsessed with what her roomie does. And the prince...

Aaaah... the prince! I was expecting so so soooo much for this. Let me first start off by saying that you don't market a novel/story as meeting your lifelong celebrity crush, finding out they're assholes, falling in love with their brother whom you thought was a snobbish prick and then change the story completely in the first three chapters. I thought she was in deep love with Leo, but seeing as how quickly she changed her mind after "years" of being in love I don't think she loved him that much.

Dude, let me just say: as a teen I was in deep deeeeeep "celebrity crush/love" with Justin Bieber and I remember basically breaking into tears every time I saw him and Selena Gomez together way back when. I also remember being super heartbroken when he came to town for a concert and seeing him acting out, being an arsehole, a jerk basically with everyone he crossed (all of this way back when in 2012/2013) - I KNOW WHAT THAT IS LIKE. I know what it's like to be so near to someone you thought you were madly in love with and it turns out they are a completely different person in real life. I know what it's like to be heartbroken over it. I know what it's like to be so dissappointed that, whenever you see them, even in a picture, you feel betrayed and like a stupid person who got played. I remember taking my time to pick myself back up and getting over that heartbreak- AND NOT IN A SPAN OF TWO PAGES.

I can't get over that. Like okay, yeah, Leo's an asshole but couldn't that whole arc be stretched to at least 30% or 50% of the novel? Is that too much to ask? Look, I get it, we have to establish a friendship/love between the two mc's but seriously... I thought we were supposed to care about him but i guess not quite.

Also, okay, how Edmund/Eddie whatever is written. Not enough development in my mind, not enough of anything! Why should I care about him ending up with Amelia (I think is her name)? The only part I will say that broke my heart was on his wedding day at the start of the novel- I felt really bad for him. And then... both him and Amelia suffer from blank-page syndrome. Is that a thing? I don't know, but what I mean by it is how these characters could fit into any freaking mold on any novel and fit in. They are stand ins for what are supposed to be main characters- developed characters with multiple dimensions to them. Why should I like Eddie? He's got a dimple and apparently is super sensitive. But after the stunt he pulled on the gala by treating Amelia like a prick and letting her walk away alone- no. Dude... I'd ask for my money back after spending SO DAMN MUCH money on a ballgown that I would wear once. I'm lucky enough to not live paycheck to paycheck and even I am financially hurt by her purchasing a 4k designer dress to wear for AN event... that's too much... learn to style a thrift dress okay, you don't need to buy a dress fit for a princess to look like a princess, okay? It's all about styling, accessories, and overall feeling like your dress is worth 40k instead of 100$ at most.

Also, she didn't even stay the whole entire gala so.... 4k pounds wasted on a dress worn for 30 minutes at most. Wow. Just wow.

TL;DR: All in all, and to wrap up this long review, if you're seriously in the mood to be swept up by a prince in a modern-day environment (that isn't centered around christmas) watch The Prince and Me with Julia Styles and I PROMISE it's way better than this. A bit old, it's from the early 00's but so so worth it.

This was okay, plot-wise. A little weak in characterization and uh, a whole bunch of protocol I'm guessing, but I can overlook that for solid chemistry (the chemistry was...okayyyyyyy).

There were a lot of plot holes that I'm guessing will be explained in book 2 (Leo and Kayla's relationship, Leo's assholerly, that cliffhanger), but what I couldn't overlook was that the main premise was built upon a foundation of whyte saviorism. The crown manages a number of charities, particularly those that focus on education, medicine and whatnot for the people of England and Wales, but no. Amelia must focus on the the work in Africa (which is taken as a country itself for the majority until about a third of the way through where Kenya appears in pure tokenized form), replete with photo shots and publicity of the handsome princes helping the poor children. There's talk of working with global organizations and doing things "for the community," but no mention of actual work with the community itself or local organizations (and the briefest of mentions of Kenya as a former British colony). Le sigh.

Plus there was a massive insult to Britney (and mental illness in general), and I will not have anyone bashing the wonder that was her comeback tour or the delight of her Circus album.

And lastly, not enough attention was given to the fact that Amelia was not just a royals fan, she was a super fan. Like, close to Swimfan level of watching. It just made me feel weird that this aspect was not really addressed (it's something I've noticed being brushed aside as a cute quirk in a lot of normie-celebrity fiction), because this part of the dynamic is just...weird.

Even with the bash on Britney and the Amelia's obsession, the plot was enjoyable and it would have been three stars except for the wonky charity aspect.

The book was somewhere in the middle for me. I liked the plot and enjoyed most of the characters, but some things weren't executed very well. First, let me tell you why I liked this book.

The story was a lot of fun! I love stories of "common people" falling in love with royals. In this one, I especially liked that our main character, Amelia, was a working woman with a thriving career when she met Edmund. Also, I liked that they met through work rather than just through a meet-cute. I thought that made things more interesting and unique from other similar stories.

I also really liked Lucy and Emma, a couple of the side characters. They were so fun and funny and added a lot of character to the book. I loved every scene that they were a part of. They added comic relief and also were great supports to both Amelia and Edmund. I can't wait to see more of them in the second book!

Now, onto some things that I didn't love about this book.

The book moved between each scene so quickly. Too quickly. Sometimes, it felt like a scene should still be going and then it would abruptly end. I needed more from each scene and each day. It all moved by too quickly.

I wasn't also not supper impressed with Edmund. Maybe we'll see more development of his character in the next book, but I wasn't in love with him in this one. He often wouldn't stand up for Amelia or did things that weren't very feminist of him. I just expected him to have more courage to stand up for his woman and what he wanted and that usually wasn't the case. I don't know. Maybe we'll see more bravery in the next book.

Overall, this was a good read that I would recommend to others who have enjoyed The Prince and Me or other similar books and movies.

A fun, entertaining book that you can get through quickly.
It is obvious which royal family the novel is based on, and it gives us (well, maybe just me) a lot of fodder to let our imaginations run wild and speculate if every detail described in the book has any relevance to the actual royal family.
My favorite characters in this book are neither Amelia nor Edmund, but the two princesses, Emma and Lucy. They are such good people! I particularly adored how they came to Amelia's rescue in her desperate time of need.

Now that I have finished (re-read) this book to refresh my memory, I'm off to the second book to see where the story leads me!

If you want a sweet cheesy romance then this is for you! I’ve always been a fan of the royals especially William & Catherine and how they came to be, but I also love Princess Diaries and The Prince and Me if anyone remembers that!??? Anyway, this is the perfect mix of all of those things! Cliché ✔️over the top ✔️ cute ✔️ still every girls dream to fall in love with a prince ✔️

Is it an earth shattering read? Nope, but will it give you a lush light hearted & fun read? Absolutely! I can’t wait to read the next one!

The Other Prince is the first novel in the new Royal Connections series. For me, I expected this to me a series with the same world and a focus on a different character for each novel. Therefore, it better for other readers to be cautioned that this novel does end on a cliffhanger and the same characters will be featured in the next novel. For me, it was just a surprise as I am used to a series, especially in this genre, to end and then the next one will start with a new story that features one of the characters used in the previous. This story though was captivating enough, though, that I do not mind another featuring the same set of characters and I am anxious to see what will happen to them next.

The general premise is just a nice escapism as a commoner gets a chance at love with a royal. In this case, the royals are the British monarchy. The set-up mirrors reality with name and personality changes as there are, in fact, two princes with the older more responsible one and the younger one that partied, but seems to be more subdued recently. It is very similar to the real princes of William and Harry. Based on the real ones, I never once, even for a second, dreamed of being with either as they just are not my type. Now, the two in the story are described at least sounded more my style, so I can see where the main character is coming from with her initial crush on at least one of them.

Amelia Glendale is a successful attorney from Australia, who moved to England to pursue her dream of working for the royal family. She is a part of the team that heads the Queen’s Charitable Foundation. Since she was younger, she has loved the royal family and has a huge crush on the youngest prince, Leo. After the queen’s unfortunate passing (the story starts in July 2021, so hopefully that is not a prediction of the future given that Prince Phillip just passed away and July is not too far off), Amelia is now tasked with working with her crush, Leo, and his older brother, Edmund. Here she gets her chance to meet Leo and start to get to know him, but he might not be the dream guy that she thought he was and maybe Edmund might not be the closed off person he seemed to be either.

The romance is a “forced” proximity as Amelia and Edmund are put together to share an office space where they begin to get to know each other. For me, I enjoy this type of romance as it is very relatable. Even for general friendships, being “forced” together with another creates an environment for you to interact with another whereas you might not have in another situation. The compatibility is still a huge factor, but at least you would give the other person a chance in this type of environment. I loved the two of them getting to know each other with just general conversation. They were well-suited, but they did not automatically jump into a relationship and worked on a friendship first.

I loved the side characters of Lucy and Emma as they provided a lot of levity and general enjoyment every time they were mentioned. I am unsure of Amelia’s friend Penny as I feel that she made a lot of mistakes that were made consciously and I feel that they weren’t dealt with enough. It is difficult to describe without spoiling portions as even the smallest reasoning could give a portion of the story away. I am hoping that she gets better in the next story, though, as I just found her to be an okay friend in this one, but not the amazing one that she was supposed to be.

This story was very cute and an gratifying experience where you walk away from this one ready to pick up the next one in the series. I do wish that Leo’s part was drawn out a little more when he and Amelia first meet. I feel that Amelia had this crush on Leo forever, but he was a jerk once at their very first meeting and she decided to move on. For most people with her level of a celebrity crush, it just did not seem like a realistic transition before she just let it go. I did not need for Leo to suddenly become perfect, but I just wanted a little more on Amelia’s side to get over him. Overall, I am excited to see what the next novel brings as I want to learn more about all the characters and also see how everything will unfold after the cliffhanger ending. A very fun and charming novel!

**I give a special thank you to Giselle with Xpresso Book Tours for the opportunity to participate in this book blitz with this enjoyable novel from the author, Alice Dolman. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**

The book was an overall enjoyable read. It definitely had its good moments and also some bad ones, but who here hates a cute royal love story right? So we read on!

The way romance between Amelia and Edmund developed was cute and sweet, though it was going as fast as a train while just meeting a month it felt reasonable and okay, particularly with Edmund being a prince and he mentioned he is not looking for some fling but a serious partner. Honestly, the romance wasn’t some earth shattering or super cheesy romantic love story, compared to what I expected when I first started reading but it works. Knowing that there will be a second book, I am hoping it just gets better from here and become more intense. I guess the story is just building itself up for the next one? It felt like an introduction to everything sprinkled with a bit slight drama.

The characters are also lovely! Edmund was quite the endearing prince, he had hobbies and interests normal people have. Amelia is also a likable protagonist with her being a modern working woman. A lawyer who liked to do things on her own merit, and didn’t want to rely on others despite her new connection with royalty. Funny, kind and friendly cousins Lucy and Emma make the story even more better! I love them both so much, they deserve their own happy ending too! Hopefully in the next book? I didn’t quite like Penny’s character though, she seems to be nice and supportive enough of a best friend to Amelia but I feel like she’s also hiding something? Her actions are so suspicious and wring sometimes, I can’t be complacent with her. Leo also, it was sad that he was written in a way that he is a stiff and robotic jerk despite being the media darling. What is up with that? There has to be something good in inside him like what the others are saying there has to be a reason why Eddie tolerates him.

The Selection is my favorite book and I don’t know if its just me but I see quite some similarities with the character’s and their personality. Like the King and King Clarkson both being the cold antagonistic fathers wanting their son to be better and equipped for the throne being the next in line.
Prince Edmund and Prince Maxon also have similar characteristics both are young great leaders but too humble to admit it. They also unconsciously hurt the people they love because of their social status and bad decisions.

The cliffhanger at the end was just intense, i didn’t expect that the next book will continue on with the story, but now I want it to be out already! I cant possibly wait for next year its that bad.

This book was entertaining but predictable. I love the royal trope and it usually follows the same plot line where the common girl meets the royal boy, flirt and share trauma, fall in love, breaks up due to the family and the palace meddling in the relationship, gets back together, and will face all the odds side-by-side, and finally live happily ever after. The plot line of this book definitely followed that but it did have interesting characters that were relatable to the reader. Amelia Glendale, the main character, is a hard-working, intelligent lawyer from Australia that has ambition and wants to leave a mark on the world but is also kind and cares about people. I liked how she wasn't just some lord's dumb party girl daughter who chased the prince cause he had a title and eventually they fell in love. In fact, she was scared at first for obvious reasons like her privacy being stripped away from her or the potential of getting heartbroken with a flashing camera in her face, but she overcame it for love. The basic theme of this book is that love wins and it is worth going through the tough times to have your soulmate to hold you at the end of the day. However, some chapters felt unnecessary like I didn't need to hear about her binge-eating and watching reality tv all the time. I also wish we got more of a description of the clothes she wore in this book as well as what she looked like exactly. Other than that, I am intrigued to read the next book.

I'm bored so I'm reading several trashy cliche books over the next few weeks and this was the first. A classic royal romance involving a prince falling for a commoner which was not very loosely based on the true British royal family - how cliche can you get? A light fluffy and predictable read, which was just what I needed for a bit of escapism.
There were some areas of this book that probably should have properly been addressed but instead were skimmed over. Why was Leo, the main character's celebrity crush prince, such an asshole to her? What was the reason? And surely it's a bit weird for her to be such a royal stalker (literally!) and yet dating a prince? Just doesn't sit right with me but that's what I get for reading Wattpad-style fiction I suppose.
Also Penny pissed me off: how dumb can you be to think your 'finance' boyfriend who you conveniently meet when your housemate starts dating a prince is not an undercover reporter? Man couldn't even name a single finance firm. Not to mention the fact she fed all of the secrets that Amelia confided in her about her relationship straight to this man when she herself wasn't supposed to know any of it. If it were me I would have dropped her as a friend instantly.
Although I got predictably annoyed at a lot of this book, it is a light-hearted and unsubstantial read which does what it says on the tin - 3 stars.

The "Kiwi" comes to town

Amelia has grown up a lover of the royal brothers. Growing up at the same time as Edmond and Leo, she, along with half the other girls her age in the world, had a crush on the fun, younger Prince Leo. She even had a mug with Leo's likeness printed on it. Her grand mother had bought her when the royal family came through her town when she was young.
Now a lawyer, Amelia decided to move to London with a friend of a friend, to start their careers. After three years working for the Queen's Foundation, she loves her job and helping make changes possible for the less fortunate.
Edmond has just lost his beloved grandmother three days before he is due to be married, a painful time for him and his family. He's awaiting his bride at the front of the church, when unknown to him and the guests, his bride arrives at the church for their wedding, only to drive away, never having exited the limousine. He couldn't be more vulnerable in the weeks following!
Don't miss this well plotted and fun novel. I can hardly wait until the next novel comes out in January, 2022!

Royal romances will always remain one of favorite & go-to genres. This was one such! And to add cherry on top, this had the whole commoner-royal trope as well.

I totally loved Amelia. She was confident, funny & thriving in her job. The subtle love triangle was really cute & hilarious.
Prince Edmund was such a down-to-earth character despite being a prince. I loved their banter chemistry so much.

Although there wasn't much of a conflict or following grand gesture, it was still enjoyable & looking forward to the sequel.

Okay, admit it. Who hasn't thought about falling in love with a prince at some point in their lives? So many of them are charismatic and handsome. But we also don't always see what's behind the shiny crown.

This book was fantastic. I didn't know if I was going to like it at first with all of the things that are going on in the world right now. But I did. The characters were great and I loved how once you take away the titles, Eddie and his cousins just seemed like rich folks. I think the only character I didn't like very much was Amelia's best friend. Boundaries are important to me and I'm not sure she really respected them very much when it came to knowing what was going on in Amelia's life.

But overall, I loved the book and wish it hadn't the way that it did.

Oh my G!!!!!!

Okay, so imagine if Kate Middleton had dumped Prince William on their wedding day. Yikes, that kind of global scandal sets the stage for this novel.

Cue in Amelia, who works for the Crown and has a crush the size of her country on the second prince, Prince Leo (Leopold is such a fugly name). Turns out Prince Charming is not quite charming. And the heir to the throne is a thoughtful prince with a killer sense of humour, madder baking and cooking skills and is a nice office mate. Sparks fly and the paparazzi build a bonfire with it, thrusting Amelia into the heat of being with a royal.

I loved this book for a number of reasons. Firstly, it had a killer premise. Hats off to Alice Dolman. Secondly, gosh, Eddie!!!🥰😍😍😍😍. Thirdly, Emma and Lucy😂😂😂😂. Those sisters are vibes.

Okay, let me be serious. This book is funny and full of swoony romance. I loved how vivid a picture the author paints. At some point, I started reading with a British accent in my head😂😂. It's a closed door romcom but it's great. I'd definitely recommend it.

Amelia Glendale is a lawyer who ends up working for her long-time crush, Prince Leo, the younger brother of stuffy Prince Edmund. Once a party person, Prince Leo has settled down. Prince Edmund has always been the sensible one, the dutiful heir, until a scandal ruined his reputation. Now he is looking for a chance to have a relationship where he is more than just his position. Will Amelia realize that the perfect man for her just might be Prince Edmund?

This was an enjoyable comedy with fairytale qualities. The reader was given good insight into the two men, really got to know them, and became invested in which Prince would be Amelia’s best choice. Grab your copy and see if she picks the man you would have recommended for her!

The story is pretty lame

I can’t figure out if the author was trying to make this a story similar to the lives of Prince William or Prince Harry. It sort of jumped around. My feedback to the author would be to make up a fantasy country for this Prince - you have too many parallels to the real royals but then you have the characters do things that the real royals would never do. Stupid stuff. Kind of corny. Guess I just was not a fan of this book. Almost stopped reading it but kept thinking maybe it would get better. But it didn’t. Storyline was very lame. Just my 2 cents.

actually a feel good royal romance with some twisted angles

I am looking forward to book 2 to move forward from a surprising and abrupt ending + one I did not expect.
I would have hated to go through the extreme hostility Amelia received from media, the public and her company. But even knowing the love story would work itself out, I was rooting so much for them to have a happy ever after. Hopefully book 2 makes it the fairy tale ending.
The book is well written, the characters mostly one I would want for best friend,; so if you enjoy jostle clean romances with witty chatter, this for you

I received an ARC from the author thru Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving my review. This is book one in the Royal Connections. It is about Amelia who is a lawyer in London. She has been working for the Queen and her charities. She is now to work for Prince Leo. He and Prince Edmund seem to have a role reversal to an extent. One is perfect for her, the other not so much. I do not want to give it away, but she finds her prince charming. Their story does continue in the next book.

I am so hopeful the next in this series comes out soon because after this book I am hooked! Ending in a cliffhanger will do that to ya... A well written romance that is full of laughs. A great storyline that flows so well and a writing style that transports me into the story itself. Amazing characters - if you love rom coms (which I totally do) this will be the book for you - plus - it has a royal twist - brilliant!

This book was a nice change of pace. I was just in the mood for a nice cheesy romance, and this fit the bill for me!

First, let me say that there was a lot to love about this book’s host of characters! With the exception of a couple disagreeable folks the characters were endearing and fun. Dolman did a great job of making them feel like friends you would have over for a random weekday dinner and drinks. However, the main character came across on the naive side at times instead of feeling like the 31 year old, lead lawyer she was supposed to be.

Overall, despite leaning towards unrealistic at moments, this was a charming, quick, feel-good romance! While this book does resolve it’s storyline it opens the door for a new adventure right as the book comes to a close. The second book in the series “God Save the King” continues the storyline and I’m sure I’ll pick it up at some point; I hate feeling like I’m missing part of the story.

Read this if you: like romance books for the love story and not the spice, enjoy royal twists, feel like picking up something light-hearted, are okay with a female lead who sometimes forgets she has a spine

Lastly, I want to remind all of you that I rate on a pretty hard scale. I rarely give five stars, books I lose myself in and really enjoy usually only get 4 stars from me. Only my favorite, heads above the rest, books get five stars! So please don’t be turned off by the three star rating if this is a book that interests you!

At the beginning I was too distracted by by the plagiarism of the real royal family. So soon after the Queen's passing, it just seemed wrong. But I'm glad I gave it a chance. Once you get past that to the heart of the story, it is actually pretty good. Amelia is no Kate and Edmund is no William by any means but the characters are well written and fleshed out. The problems are real as is the heartbreak. I will be reading the second one to see if they get their HEA.
